Could Baylor WR Corey Coleman be Tampa-bound?
In Joe’s eyes, there are three immediate needs for the Bucs in next month’s draft: defensive end, defensive end and wide receiver.
Yes, the Bucs could use a cornerback. No telling if Alterraun Verner and his hefty salary will bounce back, but it is telling the Bucs (so far) retained his services.
And Brent Grimes is 33. Sooner or later, Father Time will catch up with him. Joe could easily see the Bucs drafting a corner at No, 9, depending how the first round shakes out.
Still, the two immediate holes on the team? Defensive end (which has been both broken and a broken record for a decade) and wide receiver.
Look, the team invested a No. 1 overall pick in America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. So get him weapons. It’s not like the Bucs are without weapons, but the group of wide receivers is a helluva lot thinner than most Bucs fans care to or want to admit.
It is this reason why Joe’s good friend Justin Pawlowski of BucsBlitz.com makes his case for Tampa Bay drafting Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman.
As for the Bucs, a big play threat is lacking on offense. I think the Bucs have 2 good running backs, 2 big possession receivers, a talented young offensive line, and one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. The Bucs lack speed and the threat of big plays on offense. We have heard the rhetoric that last year’s 5th round selection in Kenny Bell could be a shining light this year. There have been others who have tried to make Louis Murphy seem much more relevant than he actually is. The Bucs need an upgrade of speed on offense, and would it really hurt to provide your young quarterback with another legitimate weapon?
Let’s look at this deeper: Like Grimes, Vincent Jackson is 33. Like Louis Murphy is coming off knee surgery. Jackson’s knees were beaten up twice last year and he missed eight games. Father Time will come knocking soon.
We all saw last year how Jameis struggled when Jackson was out and Murphy got hurt. The Bucs are high on Adam Humphries (Joe just shrugs his shoulders) and you simply cannot bank of misplaced Calgary Stampeder Donteea Dye.
The problem with Coleman is he’s a tweener. He’s beyond a reach at No. 9 and may be off on the board when the Bucs pick in the second round. Joe was told by an NFL general manager that those thinking Coleman is, say, a top-16 pick are overrating him.
So Coleman could slip to the Bucs in the second round. If so, Joe would assume Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht may take a long, hard look at Coleman, unless, of course, the Bucs are still looking to draft a defensive end.

Disagree about Coleman being a reach, even at 16. The kid plays beyond his size and would represent the only YAC threat the Bucs have outside of the RBs. In a draft class widely heralded as the slowest ever seen Coleman is not only a luxury but would be a tremendous asset to the Bucs

Agree, I can’t pass on Buckner if he’s sitting there at 9!! What about fuller in rd 2?? Unfortunately we’re gonna need an lb too. Smith is old and there’s no depth with lansanah and carter gone. That’s why I say get a cb next year. Roll the dice on verner banks and grimes. Hey, it’s gotta be better than last years secondary with lovie..

My co-worker is absolutely convinced that the Bucs will take a WR with #9. At first I said no way, but it is a fact that you must surround Jameis with weapons. That said, it should definitely be on the table……BPA!

not sure why Joe is harping on the DES so much. 1 yes, but 2? Gholston and J.Smith are pretty good players and Ayers in house NOW. That leaves one spot for a designated rush specialist if you keep 4 DEs….

I don’t think there is a wr worth taking with the 9th pick. I think treadwell would be a 2nd rd pick if he came out in the evans/watkin/ odb draft, but they should go wr in the 2nd or 3rd.

Looks like we’re building through the draft and with that said let me introduce Tyler Boyd. Apparently the baddest mf in Pitt history second only to Tony Dorsett. He’s taken down Larry Fitzgerald’s receiving records for receptions and total yards. He returns kicks and has some of the most amazing catches I’ve seen since OBJ, yea I said it!

@miko…I think those to players and would be well worth it in the 3rd round…
@db55…”h” to Treadwell…he has great hands and runs great routes but lacks speed…we have too many wr’s that lack speed…and im with you with kafusi..nasty swing player and h.jones was underrated/overlooked player on our team…GO BUCS!!!

me too…listenbee lacks size and has questionable hands…he can be dangerous in the return game but we need someone that has good speed, good route running and most importantly HANDS….tyler boyd is that guy…hope licht knows…GO BUCS!!!

I agree….speedy wide receivers with bad hands are a waste of time in the NFL. I’ve seen every TCU (alum) game and I can tell you Listenbee is exactly that. On the other hand JOSH DOCTSON is the real deal. Great athlete, amazing body control and great hands. Consistent production. I think he’s the best WR in the draft, period!!! Most mocks have him going 25-40. If he could somehow fall to the Bucs in 2nd round, or trade up to get this guy. He’s a #2 wr day one and would easily develop into a #1.

If a Corey Coleman or Will Fuller or Josh Doctson dropped to our 2nd rounder I think they would be hard to pass up…I don’t think that will happen though.
Sterling Shephard, Rashard Higgins, Tajae Sharpe, and Geronimo Allison would be great guys to target in rounds 3-5 in my opinion.
Higgins reminds me a lot of Antonio Brown when he was coming out. His 40 time looks slow for a guy his size, but when you watch him he gets as good of separation as anybody because he might be the best route runner in the draft. Route running skills can make up for a lack of top end speed and then you don’t end up with a guy who’s a one trick pony.

I have no problem getting a speedy receiver, but only if they get a DB and DE that can start, or be in the rotation, from day one. The only way I see a receiver being taken is if Mike Glennon is traded in they get an extra second or third

Remember the name Mike Thomas out of Southern Mississippi as a guy we could get late in the draft.. 6’1, 200 lbs and had 62 catches for 1201 yds and 12TD’s with a 19.4 YPC average .. And was also coached by our new OC Todd Monken in college.

Yes. I see them taking DE, DB, WR, LB in the first 3 rounds assuming glen on gets them a 2-3 rounder.
I thought CB all along, but I’m starting to think a safety in round 2-3. They have Vernon, banks, grimes, Robinson, …. That’s a better position group than the safeties. They might go both DB positions and not take a WR too.

I like Coleman. I think I like Braxton Miller and Josh Doctson a little better, but all three are kinda smushed up in the same realm.

I agree with Miko on our DE’s. We actually have more depth at DE than DT. Wait for BPA at nine. If he is a good fit, draft him. If not, go for either Leonard “the freak” Floyd or Shaq Lawson. I like Floyd because not only his pass rushing skills but he fly’s around the field as an OLB. Can you imagine Floyd, LVD and Alexander together? If Karl “hitman” Joseph is there in the second we have to draft him. Go with WR Tyler Boyd in 3rd then DT Hassan Ridgeway in the fourth. I doubt Coleman or Doctson will be there in the second round. This just explains why we need to sign James Jones or Roddy White.

Draft Tyler Boyd in the 2nd. He has the best hands in the draft. And has 3 great seasons on his resume already. If Hargreaves is there at #9. We can’t pass on him. Buckner will be an interior lineman. Not this savior of a DE. Been saying this for weeks now. 1st VH3. 2nd Boyd. 3rd Carl Nassib. 4th neon dion out of LSU. And fill in special teams after that.

Take care of both lines, early and often, secondary later.
We’ve got sufficient weapons with the right play calling to move the ball. Not saying we should whiff on a WR, just don’t reach.

I don’t want Hargreaves…Can you see Hargreaves trying to contain Julio(6-3) or the duo of Benjamin(6-5) and Funchess(6-4)…all 5 inches or taller and quite a bit heavier and all twice a year? I’ll pass on that, thank you!
Ramsey would be god send but unless all the teams in front of us lose their minds he’ll be gone.
I’d like to see Stanley at 9 and if he’s gone then Buckner or Bosa or BPA other than Hargreaves. My reasons for wanting Stanley is Jameis got hit far too often last year and putting Sweeny(piss poor pass blocker) next to D Smith is an abortion in the making.

Why do people think an OL in the first 3 rds?
I fully expect them to draft an OL but not until Rd 5/7.
They have 2 good centers. 3 good OG and OT.
I think they add depth, but not early draft, too many holes on defense for that this time around.

Everyone has plugged their favorite receiver, but I will not do so. I will just beg Licht not to get a slightly built WR who can be rerouted at the line of scrimmage and is not durable enough to give you a full season of production; like Bell last year and even worse Dontae Dye who couldn’t catch a football and was not a skilled returner. Find a talented receiver with great hands and athleticism and fearless; with a durable body, and good speed to be a deep threat and willing to block as well as teachable to run excellent routes. If he can run back kicks without fumbling–terrific. This WR has to be able to replace Jackson when he retires. Bell was a mistake. No repeats.
