Phil Simms weighs in
Iconic Giants quarterback Phil Simms shed some light on what might have given Team Glazer more urgency in firing Lovie Smith.
Many suspect Dirk Koetter possibly leaving the Bucs for a head coaching job was a factor in him getting Lovie’s job. Of course, no sane owner would have wanted America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to lose his seasoned offensive coordinator and mentor. And Koetter was a head coach candidate and the likes of Chucky were endorsing him on national airwaves.
Simms speaks in the excellent RealFootballNetwork video below about how quarterback coaching is declining, and quarterbacks must have coaches in place that will ride them hard. He doesn’t reference Team Glazer, but he dives into the lack of good QB coaching in the NFL and how the position isn’t progressing compared to others.
Simms says there’s way to much enabling and coddling of QBs that starts at the youth level and extends to the NFL. That’s affecting development.
Interesting that just yesterday, Jameis said he was pushed to the brink by Bucs quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian and Koetter last year. Both played QB in college. Jameis even said it was harder than he was ridden at Florida State, where Jimbo Fisher runs a pro-style offense has coaches in a rather old-school way.
Simms explains that his pre-NFL coaches would have laughed at Bill Parcells for being a softie at times. That’s how tough the football culture was when he was coming through the ranks in the 1970s.
Perhaps Team Glazer had a Simms-like view of the QB position and didn’t want to assume the risk of a Koetter exit.

Maybe Team Glazer took a poll from the defensive players, and lovie was not as “well liked” as many have thought, and that is why they canned lovie!!!!!

Simms was also one of the people blasting the Bucs for taking Winston in the first place if I remember correctly, which gives me very little confidence in what he says now….

53 me personally I will give many of them a pass because they were clearly basing they’re positions off all the turmoil that was going on. I don’t really recall many questioning his skillset and ability. Sims I did notice on one particular sunday put up a graphic showing all the young QBs Mariota,Bortles,Bridgewater,Carr etc. He stated on air in his opinion WINSton will be the greatest of them all.

Buc53 I don’t remember Phil or Chris Simms blasting the Bucs for taking Winston. Every article that I read they both were really high on Winston being the #1 pick. Chris even went further than that in some analysis and basically said the Bucs would be stupid to pass on him.

Lovie was probably lied to by Licht and the Glazers. Licht doing everything to keep his job, dimed Lovie out. Lovie was told not worry. He would get his defensive draft in the next few yrs. Meantime for 2 yrs, the offense was stacked with draft choices. Lovie was suppose to get his shot at a defensive draft.That was the plan. But the Bucs did not follow that plan. They fired Lovie before he could draft defensively. Moreover though, some of it was Lovie’s fault. Had he fired Frazier and his son, he might have kept his job. I don’t know. Perhaps Joel Glazer and Co thought we were close. So they fired Lovie thinking all we need to do is shore up the Defense and we have a contender. I think part of this thinking is right. However I also think our defense needs major revamping which has yet to be done. We shall see.

I dont give a damn if lovie would have been givin all of the top 15 draft picks in the firat round he still would not have found anyone to make his system work. He had two years and he hand picked his free agents. Lovie cant coach defense in todays nfl period!!!

Hopefully we don’t baby Jameis…I don’t see Dirk doing so….but I am sure Jameis has gotten coddled at times.

Jameis Will be fine , he wasn’t my first choice but he has won me over. As far as conspiracy theories, who in the world would want to see another year of that garbage. Lovie had his chance and it didn’t work time for a new coach. This is a result based league, If Koetter doesn’t get it done he’ll get third prize as well. Put away the tin foil.

@BigHogHaynes, Please stop with the conspiracy theory, Lovie is stuck in the 90’s with that defense. It won’t work in todays NFL, you need a safety who can hit like John Lynch and intimidate receivers from running slant routes. Today, Lynch would have a bunch of targeting penalties because of the rule changes. @Mike Johnson, when Leslie Frazier was calling plays, the defense was better in almost every statistical category, so Frazier wasn’t the problem. Lovie and his rigidity and refusal to make adjustments cost him his job. I bear him no ill will and wish him all the success with Illinois, just glad he is not here anymore.

@satchseven, I don’t really know how much talent we have, nobody does. We do know that coaching wasn’t that good. More and more is coming out from players and will continue to come out. With that being said, Jason Licht and the coaching staff seem to think there is talent here, that good coaching and schemes that actually play to players strengths will make a difference. I for one feel the same way. All you need to know about Lovie is that he wanted a safety in eight consecutive drafts, are you going to tell me every safety was garbage or maybe Lovie and his son aren’t very good coaches, I tend to believe the latter.
