Mike Glennon A “Top Target”

It sure seems like Mike Glennon is the talk of the NFL. Joe can’t remember the last time a backup got so much run from BSPN.
The chatter from the four-letter continues. This time it is from “The Professor,” John Clayton. In this BSPN video, Clayton notes that if the 49ers keep Colin Kaepernick, the top target for quarterback needy teams is Glennon.
The next target after Glennon? Clayton claims it is A.J. McCarron of the Bengals. Clayton notes that neither the Bucs nor the Bengals want to part with their second-string signal-callers. Yes, Joe understands why — in case the starting quarterback goes down.
Here is the difference between the Bengals and the Bucs:
The Bengals are already a playoff team. This just in: the Bucs are not and haven’t been going on nine years. Unlike the Bengals, the Bucs do not have the luxury of declining a draft pick for a QB on the sidelines whose goal is never to play. A hole in the starting lineup could be plugged with help from a pick acquired for Glennon.
Look, if Glennon is really this coveted, then he’s Bucs history after this season. And Joe wouldn’t blame him one bit. Glennon is due to hit the lottery, if Clayton is accurate. Might as well get something for him now instead of watching him walk out the door in nine months. (And don’t be fooled into believing a compensatory pick would result.)
Yes, Joe understands the Bucs don’t want to trade Glennon. The reasons to move Glennon far outweigh the noble reason (singular) to keep him.
Letting Glennon walk in a few months when (maybe) the Bucs could have gotten a second-round pick from a quarterback-starved squad would be short-sighted if not irresponsible.

Depends on the 2nd round pick being offered. Middle of the round or higher or no deal. It’s not a terrible position to be in…2 starting caliber QB’s on the roster when a lot of teams barely have one. Plus based on some of the free agent hired this year I’m guessing Licht may not share the same opinion on the Bucs playoffs/Super Bowl chances next year.

I’m guessing the chatter of a 2nd round pick is bs. I would imagine something like a 4th has been offered and we are trying to get more. Please dont overplay your hand Jason! Take a 3rd or 4th and be happy. Mike G is free after this season and is gone. Also, the jets aren’t trading Mo for a back up qb.

Does anybody notice that all the good teams or at least most of the good teams really do care about compensatory picks and work them into all their free agent transactions? But not the Buc’s though. Why would we need more picks, we’re great?

I think there really is alot of intrest in him, mostly because the QB QBneedy teams haven’t really done anything in free agency to address the position. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few teams are waiting to see if they can get him. After a trade I imagine the RG3 and Fitzpatrick and others will start signing with the other teams.

Do it for no less than a third, that way you can parlay it and possibly move up back in the 2nd round for a player you really want that may not be their by the time you pick in the third round

I think the goal is to add starters. If you think you can get them in FA then you sign them. If you are a good team it’s less likely a FA would step into a starting position, thus you take comp picks tho develop future starters. Its the luxury of having good talent in place.

No team n this is giving up a 2nd round pick for Mike Glennon or it would have happen already. Teams have learned from the last backup who swept the off season off their feet twice (I get money) Matt Flynn..

Again, this depends on the trade deal. If the Bucs can get a 2nd round or better this makes sense. If all they can get is a 3rd or later then you might as well keep him. Draft picks in any round are a crap shoot and we know Glennon can play. A despite Joe’s clairvoyance on this issue, not a single person on this planet can say with certainty that the Bucs wont make the playoffs this year. The staff of the Buccaneers better be working their tails off to not lose a single game, not hedging their bets and making decisions based on “We suck this year anyway, why not trade away our quality depth for better draft position next year”. If you can upgrade the team by adding value, then do it. If you just want to get rid of Glennon to reclaim a draft pick, then thats just crazy.

Just think, if we’d drafted Manziel in 2014 (like some people wanted) then Mike Glennon would probably be our starter now, we wouldn’t have Mike Evans (for some people to whine about), and we’d be having some whole different conversations right now. Strange how things work out if you’re patient and don’t jump too fast at the wrong thing.

Crab…not at all…some may think they have a good chance for one of the best “young guns” in the draft…or possibly that someone else might pop up that would cost less and be as good or better. I’ll trust in Lichts GM prowess a little longer before we arm chair GM’s try to move him aside.

Nice John Clayton is getting on the glennon band wagon, need that publicity to get things heated up, 2nd round is not gonna happen but swapping picks to move to 31 or 32 with Denver or Cleveland sounds like a draft day type move licht would do, Glennon makes sense with a veteran team like Denver with talented WRs, but also with Cleveland as a bridge QB for their rookie QB to be brought along slowly, let him get beat up in Cleveland instead of a rookie unfortunately for that scenario they have Mcclown to be the punching bag next season

D Rules…. true.. the drafting of Manziel would have been far worse that drafting Barron instead of Kuechley…. Worse than Eric Curry…Almost in the Bo Jackson category. We are talking nearly historic proportions. And do you think we would have drafted Winston, with a few issues swirling around, even with the first pick if we had drafted Manziel the year before(assuming we again had the number 1 pick)? The history of the Bucs would have been forever…or at least for much of a generation…changed.

And of course Guzzie… Denver did get a 3rd round comp pick. So the end of 5th round pick and basically the first pick of the second round, to move up 8 picks, wouldn’t seem to be an exorbitant compensation to me.

Glennon is gone after this season anyway. So we might as well get a 3rd or 4th rounder for him..If we can. Get something now instead of nothing later. We probably want a 2nd rounder for him. But realistically, a 3rd or 4th is about the best we will get. My guess is a 4th rounder. Take it Bucs!

That’s because the good teams already have most of their starters. They can afford to just focus on the draft for the most part. That way, when they lose a player to free agency, they have not signed as many others and they get the picks.
That comes to a team over a period of years as they build a lasting roster.

On topic, if they were truly offered a 2nd rounder at one point…Licht should have taken it. If he wants more than that…just tack on a conditional 4 rounder.

Glennon has value to the Bucs for one more season as a quality backup QB. Imagine if Winston can’t play for a short stretch of 1-4 games, Glennon could literally save the season by winning meaningful game. A rookie second round pick probably would not have the same impact.
We also need to ask what is a fair price for 1 season of Mike Glennon’s services? Any team trading for him would do so with a risk that Glennon could walk out the door after just 1 season. Sure, the new team could offer a lucrative extension now, but Glennon hasn’t really proven to be anything more than a serviceable backup at this point in his career. Glennon is probably looking for an Osweiler-like extension and the new team may be reluctant to invest that much in an unproven player.
Sometimes teams have to accept the fact that they get 4 years with a player and they have to let them walk for no compensation. The Bucs already got more mileage out of Glennon than the Broncos got out of Osweiler.
Glennon is a tough case because he’s probably better than a career backup but he’s probably never going to be a top-25 quarterback. He will need to be on a team that’s loaded with talent, which will be tough to do after a new team invests $16-20M per season in Glennon. Just look at how fat QB contracts have crushed the Ravens and Saints. Some team is going to break the bank over Glennon, I’m just really glad it won’t be the Bucs.

In 2013 MG8 his rookie year without the majority of snaps in training camp was ranked 25th in yards even though he only played in 13 games!!!!! If ranked by touchdowns he was 18th ( tied with Jay Cutler and Joe Flacco ) and had 2 more than Aaron Rodgers!!!
I am not guaranteeing he will be great, But to put a ceiling on a QB after such a short amount of time is short sided!!!

2 2nd rounders would be awesome!!! Especially if that 2nd rounder was from a team like Cleveland! We would end up with two of the top 32 players on the board and three of the top 42 players. That’s three starters!

Glennon should have played instead of McCown to get a better idea of his overall ability, thus his value. Since MG was surrounded with a high talent level of teammates, NOT! Lightheaded Lovie messed with MG’s needed reps and screwed that up. MG has to be worth at least the pick he was chosen with. QB is the most important position on the team, apparently MG was and still is not.

If they can get a 2nd round pick no matter the position do it and do it yesterday. They’ll likely get a 4th or if they are lucky a conditional 3rd round pick awarded by the league when he signs some stupid high money deal ala Osweiler next year in FA; so anything better than that the Bucs need to pull a trigger on. People asking for 1st round picks or two 2nd round picks have lost their minds, this isn’t a video game. Glennon’s asking price should be simple 3rd round pick or better plain and simple.

Joe shot down that we would get a compensation pick for MG8. Steelers got a 6th rounder for loosing a guy that hardly played. Glennon was a starter and as well as Gholston . If they both walk I’d be really surprised if we got boned by the NFL.

No, they got a 6th rounder because they lost more players than they signed and the other teams paid more too.
They lost Brice McCain and Lance Moore to other teams, they only added DeAngelo Williams so they get a pick. even if you look at the contracts McCain got a bigger deal than Williams.
Let’s not kid ourselves, if Glenda walks and somehow manages to con decent to big money from a team it’s not going to impact our comp picks because we’re likely to still be signing a bunch of guys in next year too due to the holes we’ll still have and cap room available. We’re going to be lucky if we get a 6th rounder.

Glennon has more value than the “(singular) noble reason” of being available to come in and win games if JW goes down.
Joe – Why don’t you ask Koetter and Bajakian if Glennon’s presence in the QB meeting room every day is good for Winston’s continuing development. It’s all about JW right?
Licht is smart to hold out for a top 50 pick – just like he was smart to not panic about the Martin situation and foolishly slap the franchise tag on him – which would have made it a high likely hood that we would have been sitting in the exact same position next year minus $12 million dollars.
Patience Joe. Let the actual GM Jason Licht do what he believes is best for this team without Joes constantly harping on some misguided idea that GM wanna-be Joe thinks is best for the team. Your track record regarding GM type decisions is not that great of late JBF. (Manziel mania, franchise 22, hire the worst back-up QB possible in order to not win “meaningless games”).
Joe you have this really annoying habit of driving a bad idea into the ground – and then defending it – even once it is shown that a much better path existed.

Ha. These fans are delusional. No team wants glennon for anything more than a 6th rounder. He is not coveted. And shouldn’t be. He has no intangibles. He has decent athleticism and decent arm talent. But he does not have the ability to be a franchise QB. No team is giving up a second round pick for a great back up QB. That is just idiotic. Sure teams absolutely desperate for any QB is inquiting about glennon. They would be stupid not to. But there are no trams thinking that glennon is a slam dunk pospect. They might give him a shot in a QB battle with mark sanchez, but he is not instant starter material.
