Future Bucs WR?
Interesting comments from Dixie Chicks coach Dan Quinn over the near future of recently cut wide receiver Roddy White.
White, the all-time leading Dixie Chicks receiver and a key cog in Dirk Koetter’s offense when the current Bucs coach ran that side of the ball in Atlanta, was released yesterday. (He got the news from the Dixie Chicks while flying to Belize). His salary didn’t match his production and away he goes.
In a conference call with Atlanta reporters yesterday, Quinn all but said he expects White to be wearing Bucs gear on the field this season, types Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
[Quinn] would not be surprised if he ended up with an NFC South Division rival, specifically Tampa Bay. (Now, that’s something worth putting money on.)
“Any time you go through the process, you have to expect that, knowing somebody’s history with a certain player,” Quinn said, referencing Koetter’s previous tenure as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Roddy ends up on another club just south on I-75. If that happens, it happens not just with our club but other clubs.”
Now let’s be real here: The Roddy White of 2016 is not the Roddy White of 2012. He’s 34. Clearly, he is in the sunset of his career.
However, let’s remember that Bucs No. 3 receiver Louis Murphy is attempting to rush back from a blown ACL. That’s not a sure thing. At all. Could White be a short-term replacement for Murphy if the St. Petersburg native cannot return? Perhaps.
Joe will be the first to admit he has more faith in a 34-year old White making plays than a 23-year old misplaced Calgary Stampeder in Donteea Dye and his disgusting 36 percent catch rate.

The signing of Roddy White would have nothing to do with VJAX period. They have already publicly said they would pay him his contract. Roddy would be a 3 for us and nothing more…

Let’s go ahead and assume we pick up White. Let’s also assume we don’t go after Mario. It seems both are pretty logical at this point by various reports. But what does that tell the fans that we can go after a 34 year old player at a position of semi-need, yet we won’t go after a 31 year old player at a position of mega-need? It tells me we are budget shopping, and we are not willing to spend money to win now. If that’s the case, it’s pretty ballsy to increase my season tickets by $400, (renovations or no renovations), yet we won’t spend the money necessary to build a winner. I’m sick of rebuilding. I’m sick of value free agents. I’m sick of “potential”. I’m sick of “wait until next year”, or “the future is bright”. More than anything, I’m sick of “we have so much cap room, yippee”.

I just threw-up in my mouth a little. Can we stop bringing in old vets to try and fit a system. Yes, I realize he’s the best coached player in Koetter’s history; so what?! How about the best available guys..with skill and upside…that can fit into any system since they are talented. If were going to keep a vet, keep Vjax. Vjax was productive compared to White. If we’re going to bring in a Free Agent..do so with Jones or Benjamin.

Buccs had one of the youngest rosters last year. Carolina had one of the oldest rosters (and made it to a Super Bowl). I feel we should remain young and grow older as a core, yes. I just don’t see how Roddy White is going to help us, other than taking up a precious roster spot.

I’d take him for the depth. The Bucs can’t have another situation like last year where they have practice squad level guys starting multiple games.

I am sick of the way…way….way…over-the-top Jameis adulation by the Joe(s)!!…don’t get me wrong…. I really like Jameis and he showed me a lot last year… and (at least for now)… Joe(s) have dialed back a bit… good for you Joe(s) !! …. anyway.. I am REALLY pumped up about the direction the Bucs are headed…. potentially a GREAT coaching staff …(kudos to Koetter) !… By far the best coaching staff the Bucs have ever had ! (deference to Tony Dungy…who had some damn good staffs… save OC)…GO BUCS !! 10-6 (at least) in 2016 !!! …(just…please get a good edge pass rusher…. I know that is a tougher assignment than people think….but …PLEASE !!1 and I don’t care if its by luck… we are due)

If White still wants to play I hope it’s here… Koetter knows his value not only as a receiver but as a leader as well… He would be very beneficial to the development of both Winston and Evans… 30-40 catches for @ 600 yards would be a nice contribution along with his leadership value… Three year deal put most of the garunteed money in year one and hope he can stay healthy…

Roddy White makes no sens except as a stopgap for a very cheap price. I’ll take it under those circumstances. More importantly, we need Mario who could be a guy that holds down the DE position for a solid 2 to 3 years. We still need to draft at least 1 DE, 1 CB, preferably a safety later on and a guard. We have a few positions of need primarily on the defensive side of the ball but WR is low on the priority list.

Roddy caught 43 balls for 500 yards. Evans caught 74 for over 1200. What’s Roddy going to say “hey young fella, when the ball hits your hands, squeeze it and don’t let it fall to the ground!”?

Bla.. Bla …bla…. I hate when wrighters think that everytime a player is cut they go to their old coaches team. Love RW but his wheels keep going flat from old injuries. V-jax dosnt have old injuries effecting him he was struck directly on knee. He also is leader of our WR’ s. To many leaders in one position can cause a problem. Plus they are same type of wr. We need speed at wr to take top off opponents defense. Then Evans and V-jax and whatever TE can stay healthy can cause big problems. Also, this is the “4 vertical offense” . Need speed!

Hawaiian- there is no stat available for yards forfeited from dropped passes and if there were you know Mike Clayton Evans would lead this category uncontested in 2015.
That said, you bring up an interesting point that there isn’t really much anyone can do about Evans inability to catch a football consistently. If we had Roddy White instead of Mike Clayton Evans getting passes from Winston last year on this offense his stats would be much better. He is not the player he used to be but he sure can catch the football. That competency is sorely missing from our receiving corpse, especially Mike Clayton Evans.

So you honestly believe that Roddy White is even in the same neighborhood in talent right now? You have to be joking, right? Yes Evans dropped some passes, but first of all he is young, second it’s not like balls were hitting him in the chest. The majority of his drops were high. Catchable, absolutely, but certainly not perfectly thrown balls. There’s no one that loves Jameis more than me, but his accuracy still needs a lot of improvement.
Since you are interested in the yards he left on the field, how about the amazing catches he made that very few WR’s in the league can make? It’s funny how people forget those. You think Roddy has anywhere near the same catch radius? Evans is 22 years old, and people forget he’s only played football for a few years. He’s incredibly raw, yet still produces. I expect a huge bounce back season, but it looks like you’d rather have White.

While I get the talented aspect and some passes weren’t on target (Ryan had some Jameis throws too), looking at percentages, Evans (50%) was targeted 148 times and caught 74 and Roddy (61%) was only targeted 70 times and caught 43 of them. Evans had a lot of drops. BTW 2014 Evans (55%) caught 68 out of 122 passes. I’m by no means saying Roddy is great or should be signed to replace Evans (I’m too expecting him to improve), but he could possibly replace Jackson, who has a whooping 49% average catches over his 4 yr Bucs career.

while not specific to Evans, Winston had 402 yards lost due to dropped passes (measured as ‘in air’ yards, so it doesn’t include possible YAC). Cam had the most with 457, Big Ben, Fitzpatrick, and Brady round out the top 5.
Evans was 2nd in the league in drops at 15 (Cooper 18), and the Bucs had 24 as a team. The simple math says Evans was responsible for approximately 251 yards lost due to drops, but I’d guess Evans drops were larger than average given his position and role.

Roddy White looked slow and unable to get open when I saw him – I don’t get why the Bucs would want him unless they go the entire FA period and the draft and do nothing to upgrade the situation, even then he’d probably be no best than a 4th stringer.

Look, people…even if we draft a good WR, it will take a little bit for him to develop. So getting a vet for a year, when the WR unit has 6 positions on it, is a good thing…if that vet is good. And White is.

Ike Hilliard was not fast either. But he worked that slot better than anyone. Mr. Reliable on 3rd down. We need a guy like that.

ON THE TOPIC OF KENNY BELL…
Joe is right, he has shown nothing…but that is because he has not had the opportunity. Some WRs don’t do well in their first preseason, and reps are very limited at that time anyway.
He’s a kick returner. Whether he can catch passes or not remains to be determined. But how ironic would it be if they tried him out at kick returner and he ended up being best in the league at it? And Lovie put him on the practice squad?
I’m not saying the kid will or won’t be great…I’m say he should be allowed to compete this off season. Really compete.
I’m telling you. KRs are where he’ll do best. Who cares if he can catch? It won’t matter if he scores 10 TDs a year on kick returns!

I’m going to throw up. This guy….NO!!! Cmon stop with the White talk already. Get Sanu I’m telling you Sanu is a beast. He can play slot or outside to rotate with either humphries or Vjax. Bell should be able to be versatile from outside to inside as well. I’m really not worried about our receivers right now. This team has much larger problems I fully expect Mike Evans to man up and have a big season with Jaboo!!!

The reason White wasn’t targeted very much is because he couldn’t get open. I don’t care if he had a higher completion rate percentage or whatever the hell you call that stat. He had 500 yards last year. Do you think that number is going to increase next year, as he will be a year older? Can you name me another receiver in his mid 30s who, after a slow decline in numbers, changed teams and became great again? I just don’t see how he is going to help. Is he better than V-Jax? Hell to the no! Is he going to take the top off the defense? Is he going to make our offense more explosive? I just don’t see it. I don’t see a whole lot of value to our team.
