Interest In Marvin Jones?

February 21st, 2016
Free agent WR Marvin Jones might be a nice pickup.

Free agent WR Marvin Jones might be a nice pickup.

Joe has already discussed it: the Bucs really need to bolster their talent base at wide receiver.

Shoot, Joe will suggest this unit needs more of an upgrade than cornerback.

Vincent Jackson possibly enters his final Bucs season. After Jackson, the most reliable receiver on the squad (currently) is gifted Mike Evans, who Joe hopes loses his too-often-K-Y hands.

Buccaneers.com multimedia maven Scott Smith typed about free agent wide receivers, and in this story, Smith devoted some words to a guy Joe hadn’t thought of much, Cincinnati’s likely free agent Marvin Jones.

Jones had 10 touchdowns two years ago but missed the 2014 season with a bum ankle. Last year, he only had four touchdowns but had a career-best 816 yards receiving.

Jones turns 26 next month and was the Bengals’ No. 2 receiver behind A.J. Green. He also stated emphatically at the Super Bowl that he would not take a hometown discount and Cincinnati must outbid everyone for his services.

In short, Jones wants to be paid.

Now here is a guy with playoff experience who could be a solid No. 2 — and perhaps a quality No. 3 during Jackson’s final season?

If you draft a quarterback No. 1 overall like the Bucs did with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, then you may as well get the man enough weapons.

LVD has expressed who he wants and I couldn’t agree more. He commented on a article that pewter report put out that the bucs should target WR Travis Benjamin. And his comment was #”GO GET HIM.” Love it! I’ve been lobbying for him since day one. He adds the deep threat we sorely lack. Perfect compliment to the big bodied Evans and Jackson and he would solve the PR game(3 TDs in 68 returns) and he wouldn’t command top dollar either. It couldn’t make more sense for the bucs. GO GET HIM!!!

  2. matt Says:

He should be our #1 target for wr. He has big play potential, just reaching his prime, and doest have to be the #1 or 2 guy right away. Hes not going to cost as much as a tier 1 wr such as Jeffrey, but actually fits in better.
A general philosophy for the bucs based on their current roster should be to go after the tier 2/3 skill positions (wr,te,rb) and backup lbs. Draft off/def lineman early. Get your secondary guys later in the draft. Much better chance to hit on a late round safety than a DE.

I like Benjamin better also….I think we need a WR/PR combo…..someone that compliments our corps.

    Sign SS Eric Berry
Sign DE Jason Pierre-Paul if can buy low due to injury

“We usually get solid production out of Miami alumni (lavonte David, mike James)”

Is Mike James still even on the team? (and that isn’t being sarcastic…I honestly don’t remember)

  7. Buc1987 Says:

As long as he doesn’t leave his heart in Cincinnati (what a tough word to spell, is it 2 N’s before the C or 2 T’s after the A? WTF?) like Michael Johnson did.

  8. Deminion Says:

Get Benjamin!!! If Alshon Jeffrey somehow gets into FA plz get him!!!

  9. Kevin Schmidt Says:

This is the problem with poor drafting. You can’t just replace your crappy roster with free agents who are still young and looking for a payday. It’s always a bad deal more often than not for the paying team. We must draft good and Jason Licht has my confidence vote. Thats why Bill Bellicheat rarley goes after the big names unless he feels its going to get him a ring. Other than that he goes after guys who need a second chance and gets good value out of his signings. His free agents look at it as another chance to prove themselves. Over the years players have come down here looking at it as a payday and a 1-2 year vacation. Licht will change that!!!

    LOL@ spelling Cincy..

I just wonder if LVD twitted out about Benjamin because:
    A. Benjamin himself told him too?

    B. Licht, maybe asked him to do it? Maybe to get a feel for the fans? Not that he probably cares what the fans think..or maybe he does?

It was just a tweet that came out of the blue..I am subbed to his twitter and I found it as a bit surprised..but a very nice surprise!

i like Anquan Boldin (sp) / he’s old but he’s tough as hell, i think he’s a FA

  12. Tom T. Says:

Yes, yes, yes! Sign Jones and Benjamin!

  13. feelthepewterpower Says:

Jones has the talent….whether it was health and/or Cincinnati spread or power offense…..don’t know. I’d be fine with Jones…

  14. BucinNC Says:

Didn’t lavonte play juco and then transfer to Nebraska? Not a Miami alum

  15. Kevin Says:

    Travis benjamin???!!!

  16. Rrsrq Says:

I believe Travis Benjamin and Lavonte David played at Miami Northwestern where they were #1 in the nation, so LVD knows Benjamin well

  17. NC FlorIdiot Says:

I would love if T Benjamin became a Buc… He would rip it up with Winston slinging it to him!

  18. Trubucfan22 Says:

sounds like Jones wants to get paid. I hope he interviews well, because dudes that are money hungry always get that stigma of being “me first” guys. No teams likes those kind of guys.

  19. Trubucfan22 Says:

Belicheat has had 20 years to build his roster. He has it to the point where he has a solid team to start with, and he just drafts BPA or the 1 or 2 positions he wants to upgrade. He doesnt need to go Fa shopping all the time because he doesnt need to. Also they usually don’t have a large amount of cap room to make a lot of splashes in FA. Maybe enough to sign a revis for a year here or here of sign a moss for a couple. But nothing major.

The bucs can’t do that until we have a solid roster to play with. Then we can be selective in FA and do most of the work in the draft. But as it stands now, we have more needs than the 2 or 3 starters (on average) that you would get from a single draft. I could name 5 starting positions we need on defense alone. Add in 2 or 3 spots on offense that need to be addressed… Jason licht has a lot of work to do to get this roster in to competitive form.

I like your list except I’d just sign Martin to 4 years 26-28 mil per.
Also need to draft a WR in rd 2-3 imo. I’d go OL Rd 4+.
    Also, get Mario Williams !!
