Nate Burleson Talks To Joe
February 3rd, 2016When at the Super Bowl in San Francisco (Joe was one poor choice of a bad meal from a perfect trip), Joe talked talk to all sorts of NFL types about the Bucs. One guy is NFL Network’s dapper Nate Burleson.
While taking a break from Super Bowl Opening Night duties, Burleson talked about the direction of the Bucs, Dirk Koetter, the talent level on the team and, of course America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
JoeBucsFan: From afar, what is your take on all the moves the Bucs have made recently?
Nate Burleson: Nothing surprises me in this league. I’ve seen coaches come and coaches go. I’ve seen players come and players go. You know, you never really can speak on an organization unless you know what is happening from within. The main thing is, you keep the core guys around. Talking about the Bucs organization, you have to surround Jameis [Winston] with everything he needs to be successful.
Joe: It isn’t like the Bucs are barren of talent, just look at the five players in the Pro Bowl they had.
Burleson: They have enough talent to go out there and make some waves. I think there were some people, looking from afar, that had the Bucs doing some damage this year. With all the learning curves that Jameis went through, the roller coaster ride of a season, and then the [Lovie Smith] firing of course, this is the ultimate reset button. Right now you can either go one of two ways: You can build on last year and get better, or you can look at it like a reset and if you do that, it is going to put you in a position [for a setback] and nobody wants that.
Joe: How did you think Jameis handled his rookie year?
Burleson: He did a great job. I felt like once he got drafted, he matured tremendously. And on top of that, we all made mistakes in college, and I am not going to downplay anything that I don’t know the details on, but I will say this: If our lives were as magnified as much as his, there would be blemishes on all of our resumés. But what he did, he put that in the past and went out and led a group of men, not just regular men, but men with millions, a young rookie, and captivated not only a city but an organization, and it’s hard to do that. Usually, that takes years. As a rookie, guys I think are taken to him.
Joe: What is your read on the hiring of Dirk Koetter?
Burleson: Time will tell. Time will tell for me. I am a guy that you have to go out and prove your worth. Just like when you bring in a new player. I couldn’t tell you what a new player is going to do until he goes out on the field. Results will determine what kind of a hire it was.

“Time will tell. Time will tell for me.” AKA “I have never heard that name in my frigging life”

Sounds like you guys have a problem with Nates color, I mean commentary!!

I actually loved Nates take on how Winsron handled his rookie season.

kudos to anybody on the national media scene who can honestly say they know more about the 2015 bucs other than the fact that Jameis Winston had a pretty good rookie year and that we fired Lovie Smith in January. for those who can’t, i really don’t blame them. Joe always manages to find dozens of folks out there with some sort of past bucs ties that give some insight, though. i hope (selfishly, of course), that a bucs-dominant SB media day is in joe’s very near future, with our young bucs taking the place of Cam & company

Time will tell…Thank you Captain Obvious! It doesn’t take a professional analyst to make that comment. You can say that about anything. You are paid for making predictions not hind site analysis. SMH!

Talking to anyone during this is going to result in a love fest. No one is going to trash talk another player and they will all follow the company lines.
If joe were to ask him about mike Jenkins, he would have said “oh yeah, great player, up and coming, he’s proving himself and will be an excellent player for the bucs”.
See how easy that was? Anyone can talk up a player whether they deserve it or not. No one is going make waves and throw shade on another player.

It’s the truth though! We won’t know till they hit the field.

So, basically, he didn’t like Lovie’s firing. At least, reading between the lines, that seems to be his take. As for being non-committal, that’s the best approach ever. How can you judge a new HC or new players if you don’t wait to see how they do? I never understood why people like to predict things so much, leave that for the talking heads on TV. And by the way, those “experts” are often wrong.

I’m with Burleson. Time will tell. All of the adulation and handshakes mean nothing. You gotta win in this league. Time for Koetter and crew to prove themselves. Right now this new regime is a flat zero. So..lets see the product they put on the field. Hard scheduled or not. 31 other teams have hard schedules too. I can’t wait.

Good job JBF… I don’t care what it is… Steal some of that attention and positive thinking away from those stinking Panther nut huggers…. I believe the Glazers owe you some kudos… Takes some footballs to go to the SB and question people about a last place team…
Would be curious to know Joe…. How many people are telling you to get lost when you approaching them with all things Bucs???
And how about this question to gain some noteriety… Is JW better at this point in his career than Cam???
