Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib discusses his Tampa days with Joe at Super Bowl opening night
Joe was no big fan of Aqib Talib. His Bucs play never lived up to his first-round talent.
It spoke volumes at the time of his trade that former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik could only get a fourth round pick from the Belicheats in return.
At Super Bowl Opening Night, Joe had a chance to talk briefly with Talib (“holler” is a better word because Joe had to slug it out to get a question in against the likes of sweaty-arse Chris Berman.)
With the Bucs, Talib was nowhere worth all the hassle he created, including a four-game suspension for a performance-enhancing substance, allegedly the ever-popular Adderall (we do not know the substance as the NFL and NFLPA are not allowed to release drug test results).
Last night, however, Joe saw a totally different and impressive side of Talib. After Talib initially chuckled when Joe asked him if he was glad to be out of Tampa Bay (he’s playing in his second Super Bowl since the trade while the Bucs remained a pillar of losing), Talib confessed what Joe thought: that Talib’s shenanigans (helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, gun-totin,’ Adderall-dropping, granny-hassling) are why he’s not still with the Bucs.
“Tampa was a great place, though,” Talib said.”The Glazers are great owners. They drafted me. They took numerous chances with me. They are great guys. A great organization over there.
“I kind of miss Tampa, man. I loved the city. I miss my house, man. That was the first house I ever bought. I had to sell it.”
Now this is what Joe calls growing up. Maturity. Talib was borderline out of control with the Bucs. Talib simply ran out of rope in Tampa. The team couldn’t tolerate any more mischief.
Joe’s happy Talib finally grew up. Too bad it was too late for the Bucs.

When I see Talib play, I think of all the Bucs Tampa allowed to get away, that are making it in the NFL.

Too bad it took him a while to grow up. It was painful to let him go, but his contract was up and we really couldn’t sign him to a longterm deal. At least we got Goldston for him.

I wonder how many more wins we’d have with Revis, Talib, Barron, and the Hawk in the secondary. The lesson is keep the talent you have and add to it. I think Licht gets that.

He had to go. He wasn’t worth it at the time and he needed a new start as well.

I can’t recall who we got for that 4th round pick…..but it’s always, to me, not the move but what you do with it that counts.
The lesson learned here is you draft players that have already matured or, like Jameis…you do extensive research and background checks.

Bucs got Will Gholston with the pick received from NE for Talib, so not a total waste of time, but trading a starting (Pro Bowl quality) CB for a run-stopping backup DE is not a move forward.

For that matter why did those same Belicheats let Revis walk?
Do we believe the Belicheats don’t have an eye for talent? Really?
Or perhaps cornerback is simply not as important in their defensive scheme?
Whatever it seems to me that the Belicheats have confirmed the Bucs assessments of both Talib and Revis.
I liked Revis but think he or any DB is overpaid at 16 Million! Perhaps Belicheat agrees.
Happy for him if he’s grown up but I have no desire to see Talib in a Bucs uni.

He didn’t get into JUST a fight. He was also accused of verbally assaulting an old lady, physically beating a cabbie, and shooting at a guy (his sister claimed the guy abused her). The last one resulting in a felony warrant issued for him. It was one thing after another with him, so I don’t think the Bucs front office went too far in booting him for what they could get. Talib was not in control of his behavior, and you can never know when guys like him will grow up.
Apparently, the trade was exactly what was needed to wake Talib up, and he hasn’t had many problems since going to NE. Maybe winning more games was what did it. Although, he was also just investigated for aggravated assault (again) in April of 2015. So, his anger management is still a work in progress.

@dylan talib only played one full year with the pats. They only offered him a one year deal. Not many teams are willing to give multi year deals and pay top dollar for a guy with a troubled past. He is in the program with the nfl so his next failed test (if he has one) he would miss at least half the year. Its a risk that paid off for denver but they were the only ones that would guarantee 26 million over 4 years was his only substantial multi year offer. It’s a little more than one training camp fight. When your are under investigation for firing a gun at someone by the dallas pd, have been under investigation for assult with the tampa pd, and your are in the program with the nfl plus whatever is going on with your team… it’s not racist, its business. Good for him that he has made the most of it.

Check me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this Talib’s 1st Super Bowl? He was traded from Bucs to NE about 5 weeks into the 2012 season. Pats had just been beaten by the Giants the season before, but lost to Ravens in the AFC champ game in 2012. He spent all of 2013 with Pats, but Broncos went to the Super Bowl that year.
Last year NE won the Super Bowl, but Talib had already signed with Denver. So, he has just missed playing in the SB 3 times in the last 4 seasons, but this will be his 1st time playing in one.

The Bucs could have had a D-backfield with Talib and Darrell Revis with Banks in reserve. It took 1 solid NFL coach to get Talib in line.

Aqib Talib is the reason the pats signed revis because like with the bucs his hamstring kept him from being a top shelf cb lol so revis got shipped from us to take the ring Talib initially should have had twice.

Regardless of what y’all think, Talib has had the last laugh. He’s made three pro bowls and about to play in a Super Bowl on Sunday, while our team continues to remain at the bottom of our division year after year.

We never should have got rid of Talib period. I am so sick of hearing fans cry over “off the field issues” as if you are all saints. A lot of you cried about Winston’s “off the field issues”. Look how stupid you look now. We have let three players go due to “off the field issues” in the past 3 years or so and they all have contributed to Super Bowl teams ie Bennett, Blount and Talib (some of you were on board with Bennett leaving once you heard about the dog situation). We love to let bonafide talent go in order to bring in someone else ie a 4th round pick/unknown/unproven player. What did we get for Talib? Gholston. Yep that looks like a dumb move as usual.
Oh yea, many of you want to trade Glennon (another proven talent) for an unknown draft pick. You wonder why the bucs never win? Because fans like some of you cry about wanting all choir boys. News flash, 53 choir boys do not win super bowls. Do you guys realize that Talib has not had one incident since he left Tampa? Are you telling me he matured in a matter of days once he left Tampa? Hell no, he had leadership in place. Buc fans and loser fans and losing organizations cry about “off the field issues” while Belichick trades for your Randy Moss’s, Talib’s and Blount’s and continue his success with maybe 40 choir boys while you fans cry for 53 (63 including practice squad) choir boys. @Tiny Tim-Well said. I don’t get it, the first sign of trouble and we’re ready to ship a guy. Talib needed structure and guidance and nobody was willing to give it. Yeah, it takes work. These are young men coming straight out of college 20-25 years old. There’s a VERY short list of things that I thought about at that age!
I don’t understand why we’re always trying to trade somebody for a fistful of draft picks!

I’ll help you guys out who don’t understand why Tampa ships out trouble makers while teams like the Patriots can magically transform a lot of these troublemakers…it’s simply a difference in strength of locker room leadership. Tampa has been a team searching for strong leadership in the locker room ever since Sapp left and Brooks retired. Basically a guy like Talib was a bad example for a lot of the other young players on the Bucs, but Belichick has an established program with strong veteran voices in the locker room. Think that isn’t true…look at Dallas with Hardy. They’re closer to the Bucs than they are the Patriots in terms of locker room leadership and coaching.

No, it just shows ANOTHER transaction where Dominik got bested by New England. What exactly did we get with that 4th round pick? I’ll wager that Talib was better.
Now, regarding Talib himself, the sad truth is he was getting out of control in Tampa. Would have been nice if we had a coach who could have made him grow up, rather than just getting rid of him, b/c he obviously has the talent. Not sure if we could have been that patient, sometimes it takes new scenery to make someone change. Either way, a 4th round pick was not equal to his worth.

If you think Dominik didn’t shop Talib to other teams to try to get a better pick, you need to go back to bed and fantasize about all of those Pro Bowl players Bruce Almighty and Chucky drafted. Teams aren’t terribly inclined to trade first or second day draft picks to guys serving sentences for using banned substances.

@tiny tim… you are way off. Mike bennett never had any off or on field issues. We let him go because the Dom was stupid and thought he drafted a pro bowl replacement in Bowers.
Blount… well blount is an average rb at best who plays for the league minimum. We are better off with sims rather than blount.

Very true!!! but also a product of the three year drug party that was the Rah/Dom regime (allegedly)!!! On the scale of dom getting fleeced this is way down the scale!!! Adderall –IF HE TOOK THAT — is banned a substance by the NFL in the labor agreement that the NFL and NFLPA agreed to in the last labor agreement. Given that, what, 70 percent (likely higher) of the NFLPA is African-American, to suggest this is racist is laughable beyond words.

The problem with Talib in Tampa was he wasn’t willing to play and take crap from coaches who haven’t won a Super Bowl and coaches who’s scheme sucks. He clearly was our best corner for a while I just wish he never had got in trouble. You guys are bashing a cb that was raised by ronde barber and played opposite of our beloved bucs goat at the corner position. He had no choice but to man up with belichick he couldn’t give him lip service that guy won more Super Bowls than the buccaneers. But to be honest he’s a great regular season corner when healthy actually top tier. He literally erased the top wr of any team (ex Julian Edelman during crunch time)

CaptTim that’s what I’m talking about. The one poster who scoffed at his maturing because of nice words? So crazy like he came out mature and ready to handle life like an adult. It takes different people different times to mature. 5 years ago Talib would have never spoke to Joe like that.
