With The Ninth Pick In The 2016 NFL Draft
January 26th, 2016Mock draft season is heating up, and while a majority of them are worthy of parakeet droppings, Joe always is interested in what FOX Sports NFL super insider Pete Schrager has to say.
Schrager busted out a new mock draft today and has the Bucs taking manbeast defensive end DeForest Bucker out of Oregon.
The 6-foot-7, 290-pound athlete tore up the Pac-12 this season. He had 12 tackles for a loss in just a nine-game season. Arik Armstead was a top 20 pick last year. I think Buckner goes top 10. Tampa’s desperate for some help with the pass rush. Buckner’s a good get here.
Buckner is a hell of a prospect. He could have entered the draft last year after leading the Pac-12 in tackles for loss, but he opted to stay in school. It was a wise move, as he racked up 10 1/2 sacks, more than doubling his total from 2014.
Joe likes that Buckner is known for his work ethic and grew up under the renowned Samoan approach to life that has served many NFL players very well.
The Bucs could do a lot worse.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:03 pm
If he is even available at 9 i think the bucs should take him
January 26th, 2016 at 12:09 pm
Sounds good. I like he stayed in school and his ancestry is known for being passionate warriors, exactly the type of player the bucs need on defense.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:09 pm
Keep in mind no rookie this year had double digit sacks so hoping for a DE savior is like hoping Lovie wouldve adapted his defense to fit all pro players…
January 26th, 2016 at 12:10 pm
Samoans are Great workers and seem naturally stronger for their respective size/weight. Which means this dude is a BEAST at 290lbs.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:16 pm
No comment on Samoans, but I don’t like this pick, either go cb or safety in FA
January 26th, 2016 at 12:19 pm
At FA we can get Muhammad Wilkerson and Olivier Vernon from the Dolphins… Spend all picks on secondary, trade mike glennon for a 3-4 rounder and pick bpa

I would be surprised if he was still there when the Bucs pick but if he is that would be a great pick.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:31 pm
Oregon’s defense……?? Prospect at best.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:31 pm
A really promising DE is a pretty easy sell to a TB fan right now.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:38 pm
This is a guy that fits the “Mike Smith” mold!
WOOOOO!
January 26th, 2016 at 12:39 pm
Laquon Treadwell —- drops mic.
January 26th, 2016 at 12:49 pm
I’m all in on the Treadwell bandwagon.

Round 1, 2, and 3 draft defense. Next year draft O-lineman with first round pick
January 26th, 2016 at 12:57 pm
I’m just happy we don’t have to worry about a qb
January 26th, 2016 at 1:02 pm
DL, DL, DL, DL. Again that’s all that really matters to me this entire offseason.
Don’t care how you do it, through draft or FA’s. Just load up that DL until you find the missing links.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:02 pm
I trust Light over any of us at this point on player evaluation for the draft lol – so basically I hope we go with his best available and hope that it happens to be an area of need.
DE is #1 priority though for team weakness. Would love to sign as many FA DEs as we can that are willing to be here.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:08 pm
Let’s trade JW to the Browns and get 2 Top 10 picks! Boom
January 26th, 2016 at 1:08 pm
Eh I’m not real impressed with this guy, he looks slow as heck plus we already have a guy named Will Gholston who is identical in size. I say pass.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:08 pm
DB…I was researching Treadwell a few days ago. I don’t think he’ll be there at 9. I also don’t think the Bucs would trade up to get him either. If they do though, I won’t be unhappy.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:11 pm
Correct LC…just load up on DL and they are bound to find at least two decent to good DE’s out of the 6,7,8 or 9 I want them to bring in. lol
Only I’m not joking.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:16 pm
Nkemdiche, Obgah, or Treadwell. I like Lawson better than Buckner. I know all the Clemson DE history but Buckner doesn’t seem quick enough, plays too high and just seems to rely on his size and strength.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:17 pm
I’d like to see one of the Florida/FSU prospects picked…..Ramsey or Hargreaves if they are there…..but if they aren’t…..this would be a good pick.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:18 pm
Ramsey and Hargreaves are the only DB’s I’d spend a first round pick on.
DB’s are a LOT easier to find than DE’s!!! If Licht sees the real deal at DE then he should go for it!!! Even if it means using MG8 as a chip to trade up.
I’m with LordC. I trust Licht more than any of us to make the right selection.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:22 pm
I’ve seen a lot of mock drafts this year and while the player differs, most have the Bucs taking a DE….
….sadly, Jalen Ramsey isn’t lasting to pick 9.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:28 pm
Ogbah
January 26th, 2016 at 1:32 pm
Ogbah please!
January 26th, 2016 at 1:43 pm
It seems like none of our desired picks will be there at 9. Ramsey is obviously my first pick, cuz he and the messiah are down like 4 flat tires but he’ll be gone. Alexander, Hargreaves and Bosa gone. Now Treadwell? when will the insanity end?
January 26th, 2016 at 1:45 pm
HarlemBuc Says
“At FA we can get Muhammad Wilkerson and Olivier Vernon from the Dolphins… Spend all picks on secondary.”
No freaking way. Our first pick MUST be a DE. In fact, I would not be surprised if Licht drafts only one CB…and that might be as late as 3rd round. He might not draft any.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:48 pm
DB55 Says
“Laquon Treadwell —- drops mic.”
Although I wouldn’t hold it against Licht if he drafted the guy…we need DE more. After 2 years of mostly Offense, do you really think they won’t give new DC Mike Smith the first pick?
It will be defense. Preferably DE.
January 26th, 2016 at 1:52 pm
Something to consider in this mock…DeForest Buckner is the first Senior off the board.
The others are all Juniors and might…might take more time to develop as a result. Especially the DBs.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:11 pm
I’m just glad we actually have a GM calling the shots who knows how to draft. I’m on board with however they draft.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:14 pm
In all seriousness – there’s 5 teams – below us
Chicago
New Orleans
Los Angeles
New Jersey
Houston
That are need of a quarterback.
The Los Angeles Rams are setting there @ 15, could easly move up and draft either Paxton Lynch or Carson Wentz. As of right now the Rams have (two) 2nd round picks.
So why not trade back a few spots – and acquire a few more picks?
He even after that- If New Jersey or Houston wants to trade up – and grab Carson Wentz – why not?
Grab as many picks as you can – especially premuim 2nd round picks.
As for DeForest Bucker – PLEASE!!! go back and watch the Oregon/Michigan St. game. Jack Conklin dominated him ALL game long. He literally disappeared in that game.

*Hell, even after that- If New Jersey or Houston wants to trade up – and grab Carson Wentz – why not?
January 26th, 2016 at 2:17 pm
Bonzai
Food for thought. Jac Smith (7 sacks) got more sacks than the first 4 DEs drafted last year combined.
Donte Fowler Jr. – IR
Leonard Williams (listed as a DE) – 3
A. Armstead – 2
Mario Edwards Jr (lb drafted as DE) – 2
Preston Smith – 2nd round 38th pick – 8 sacks
Consider this, Jac Smith had double the sacks as all first round DEs combined.
I think this means that we can draft BPA and still find gold in the later rounds.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:17 pm
Bonsai. Why must our first pick be a DE? The Bucs have holes at every position besides QB. Also what if they like the talent better in round 2-3 or later for DE? Just because a guy gets drafted higher doesn’t mean he’ll play better……there are too many examples about this. Qwon Alexander is one.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:18 pm
LUV dropping knowledge as always.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:24 pm
That could work out good LoveBucs. But that’s out of our hands. The draft will have to unfold a certain way for that to happen. Too many variables to predict “New Jersey” ( hahahahaha) or anther team will want/can trade up for that.

January 26th, 2016 at 2:28 pm
(Yes LUVMYBUCS you just beat me too it as I was typing, regarding the MSU game video, check Ogbah and Billings….
Assuming Ramsey is not available, I’m also not sold on Buckner, Mel Kiper also had him going to us. Check youtube video of big game Oregon vs Michigan State (loss), Bucker was a no show handled by Jack Conklin (projected round 1 LT), zero sacks, 1 TFL.
Ogbah and Lawson look more suitable to me at if your looking at DE, remember Nkemdiche got suspended for their bowl game and arrested, questionable character?
If you haven’t already, check out Andrew Billings , high motor, reminds me of Sapp coming out, execpt he seems stronger and faster, very distruptive in the interior and would also benefit McCoy as well.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:33 pm
O
January 26th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
Well you got the giants bears and saints directly behind us in the draft. Dont think any of those teams have a need for a first round QB. Maybe Chicago. The other teams willing to trade up(if they even are) will have good knowledge if these teams are likely to get a QB.
Point is they aren’t trading up 8-12 spots if they can get who they want and only trade up 3 spots. As a Bucs fan I have no clue but getting a trade partner at#9 may just be a Pipedream.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:40 pm
If we trade back I won’t be mad. As long as we get Andrew Billings. That guys a SAVAGE!!! He can be our nose tackle if we switch to 34 sometimes. He IS the strongest player in the draft. He is very disruptive. And that’s what we need next to GMC. And that might give us the best group of DT in the league. (Gmc,Melton,Billings,Mcdonald,Spence)

Solid brotha – I really wanted to wath Spencer Drango vs Emmanuel Ogbah.
But Okie St. lined him up on the other side.
Pound for pound (IMO) Shilique Calhoun is one of the better defensive prospects in the draft.
January 26th, 2016 at 2:47 pm
I really wanted to *watch Spencer Drango vs Emmanuel Ogbah.

Andrew Billings aka Yung Silverback
#Beast
January 26th, 2016 at 3:08 pm
I’ve been saying move up for Bosa (if possible) or stay and take Buckner! He is a man-beast! Add Mario Williams on the other side (if he is available in free agency…I know, BIG if), and viola…a fearsome front 4!
January 26th, 2016 at 3:08 pm
I like the idea of Billings being a “BEAST” but with all due respect a heck of a lot more goes into scouting these kids aside from what they’ve shown on tape. Work ethic comes to mind for me.
It’s one thing to be a beast among college kids. The NFL is a whole nother animal. If these college kids aren’t willing to work this tails off they will not make an impact at the next level.
Strenght, size, and speed vary between great athletes. There is no common denominator in these areas. But if you look at Hall Of Fame player there is one thing they all have in common. They all worked hard and perfected their job.
This is why a guy like Brate can outperform a physical specimen like ASJ. It is why Tom Brady is the best QB of our time. It is why great players go undrafted each year.
While I can surely respect the strength and tape of a guy like Billings he is going to have to bring something extra to the table to pan out as a legit first rounder.
January 26th, 2016 at 3:32 pm
Roger that Buccaneers,
I would assume one of these players mentioned will distinguish themselves with Licht and the coaches, with their performance and also attitude at the combines, but I would think though for the #9 pick it probably would not be someone un-recognizable to most.
January 26th, 2016 at 3:40 pm
Yeah Bejoo let’s call it the Ricky Williams theory. Of course there are thousands of names you could name the theory after. I just like Ricky because I remember all the Eagles fans chanting his name then whining when McNabb was picked.
Seems like the Eagles FO probably knew something that you couldn’t see from watching film.
January 26th, 2016 at 3:46 pm
I will salivate if Wilkerson becomes a free agent. If he does and we don’t get him I’ll cry.
Really don’t see how the Jets don’t resign or franchise tag him.
January 26th, 2016 at 3:46 pm
We could trade down and get Spence. I know he’s got his issues, but he’s got some speed off of the edge. Treadwell intrigues me, though.
January 26th, 2016 at 3:57 pm
Yepper or drop down for Kevin Dodd, some people think he’s as good or better than his partner Lawson who got all the accolades, but it was Dodd had the good game vs Alabama while Lawson was out..
January 26th, 2016 at 4:04 pm
@ Fake Tiny Tim
Its funny how the posters know you are a fraud. Yet you still act like a little girl looking for attention by posting stupid comments about Jameis and the bucs in general. Arent you tired of being a loser yet?
@ Joe you can fix this at any time.
January 26th, 2016 at 4:12 pm
I really do like Billings too. I get the Sapp comparison but more recently he reminds me of Aaron Donald or Star Lotulelei. DE maybe a bigger need but he maybe too good to pass up if the top DE are gone.
January 26th, 2016 at 4:37 pm
After Michael Johnson and the great George Johnson the last two seasons under “defensive guru” incompetent Lovie Smith’s tutelage there cannot be anyone worse.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:07 pm
DE Deforest Buckner is a 3-4 DE and would probably end up playing DT in a 4-3 defense. Drafting at number 9 means we have a shot at an elite player so we can’t mess it up. Look for a player who dominates and that player is not Buckner. The player is DT Andrew Billings Baylor. Someone said Billings has to bring something else to the table to be a legit number one? Do some research. Its all there. His work ethic is second to none. That “something special” he has is a combination of size, strength and speed. He is the strongest player in the draft. At 6-1 310, he is compact but huge and his speed and strength are what sets him apart. I have not seen a faster first since Aaron Donald and Warren Sapp. If we draft Billings and combine him with McCoy, get a DE in FA, then draft a DE in the second round? DE Kevin Dodd in the 2nd round, at 6-5 275 he has good size to help against the run and would help revitalize the Buccaneers rushing attack. DE Mario Williams – DT Andrew Billings – DT Gerold McCoy – DE Kevin Dodd. It can happen..
January 26th, 2016 at 5:08 pm
Tiny Tim…you must have really pissed someone off. I always know it’s not you, so I just skip right over the a-hole.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:11 pm
Buccaneers….DL, DL, DL, DL. Nothing is more important right now. Thee end.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:23 pm
You know Jason Light is already deciding what he is wiling to do in the event his player looks like he’s gonna go.
I say get Mario Williams AND draft the best pass rusher available even if that means moving up. Pair that with MCCOY and we will be NAAAAAASSSSSSTTTYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!
January 26th, 2016 at 5:26 pm
Godzilla13- I said that about Billings but it was a general statement. Not personal on Billings. If what you said is true he sounds like a great addition.
My whole thing is that fans, generally, are enamoured with athletes. My point is, it takes a whole lot more to become a great football player.
That’s why I think the combine is dumb. Sure, its fun to watch a guy lift 400 pounds or run a dash. At the end of the day athletes with skills don’t win championships on skill alone. If they have no heart or desire they’re just another chump, flop, whatever ya wanna call them.
I don’t care who we draft. You take the athlete and I’ll take the guy who goes 100%, 100% of the time. And I betcha my team snags a title first!!!!!
January 26th, 2016 at 5:29 pm
Just like our DB’s, It would not surprise me in the least if we actually already HAVE good pass rushers on this roster, but Lovie either didn’t play them, or didn’t utilize them properly. That would not surprise me ONE BIT!!!!! But I still stick with my first post

Seriously? His ‘ancestry’… C’mon man be better than that.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:32 pm
Just because you draft the most talented receiver doesn’t mean he is willing to get smashed over the middle to make a catch. Sometimes that willingness is the difference between winning and losing. Bucs, please draft winners, not athletes!!!!!
January 26th, 2016 at 5:35 pm
I agree with TruBucfan22 ancestry matters
January 26th, 2016 at 5:48 pm
IF he is projected good I doubt he will be there at 9 for us. You never know though. If a good DE is not available at 9, I say see if we can trade down.
get 2 for 1 and load up on Defense. Some argue..take a DB with the 9th.Well, he’d better be real good. Defensive end..pass rush is a priority for our team.
But..we shall see. Our Defense must improve a lot if we are gonna win games.
Jameis is great. But you’d better be able to stop opponents when its needed.
I counted 4 for sure games we should have won easily if our Defense had responded this season. My son argues 5 to my 4. But we should have won a lot more games. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
January 26th, 2016 at 5:50 pm
Yup, Im with LUV on trading back….but only if we cant trade up a few spots to grab Ramsey. I think if we traded back to 12-15 Andrew Billings may still be there and I would LOVE to see him on the D line!
January 26th, 2016 at 6:00 pm
Trading back is unrealistic. It’s not like there are 31 teams handing out their extra picks to just give to us. We are being mocked to take Apple, Billings, Buckner among others. There is no slam dunk pick at #9. I doubt anybody is going to be that hard up to give us more picks so they can snag Apple Billing or the like.
LoveMyBucs suggested that some team may be willing to trade up to get a QB. Not sure about that being realistic either.
I’m sure the Bucs would easily trade down if the opportunity presents itself. It’s just rare to see that happen unless there is a major talent there at #9. From the names I’m seeing it seems very unlikely somebody’s trading to get our pick.
January 26th, 2016 at 6:02 pm
Here’s a realistic trade down opportunity. Last years pick. I’m sure the Bucs got plenty of offers from a team wanting either Winston or Mariota……not sure their phone will do anything but collect dust with Apple hanging there.
January 26th, 2016 at 6:10 pm
@Bucaneers thats why I like adam humphries. He has the will to win.
January 26th, 2016 at 6:17 pm
Yeah Kevin, and Brate too. I also like Qwon(sorry LVD). Our whole O-Line too, them guys don’t take no crap. I really think if we lose Mankins it will be more devastating then people think.

January 26th, 2016 at 7:48 pm
Just pray that the QBs in this class start raising their stock.
Don’t overdraft a DE just because we haven’t had a good one in a while. There are some really good players at the top of this draft.
Somebody nobody has mentioned is Myles Jack, probably the best football player in this draft. We would have the kind of speed at the LB position that only Seattle might be able to match.
January 26th, 2016 at 10:20 pm
Not too hot on Buckner, but when have these mock drafts ever been close to right this early so… The dream for me this early might be Oliver Vernon in FA, then Laquon Treadwell in the first and then let my main man Jason Licht make the rest of the decisions through FA and the draft. Would mostly be secondary, Dline, and an impressive looking Olineman or two for Jameis
January 26th, 2016 at 10:36 pm
Hell no not this guy. we have to go de in first no question even if we get mario williams gotta get a guy for the future not only the upcoming season. i dont know about everyone else but i truly believe safety is where we have to go back to back our corners are not that bad but our safeties are mcdougald is the only one worth keeping. Wish list so far
1rd DE Ogbah OSU
2rd S Kearse Clemson
3rd S Cash Duke
I am truly hoping we start the first 3 rounds something like this.
January 26th, 2016 at 11:31 pm
There are about 4-5 DEs worth taking in the first round. They must take one unless they think one of the top CBs is a sure bet lock down guy.
Personally I do not see that. Those top CBs have some flaws. I say go CB or S in round 2-4 along with another WR and OLineman.
Between Ogbah, Buckner, Lawson, and Bosa, they need one of them.
January 27th, 2016 at 12:22 am
Slightly off topic, but… Long live the Throwin’ Samoan, Jack Thompson! Wonder whatever happened to him? He sure was a bust. As for the draft, go with best player available on that first pick, then either decide you can work him in or else go work some sweet trades.
January 27th, 2016 at 1:34 pm
All you guys wanting Ogbah, watch his game tape vs his highlights. I don’t see it. I’ve watched a ton of film on him. Just couldn’t pull the trigger at 9. I know I’m not Kiper and I might be missing something but I just don’t see it. He looses leverage fast (maybe easily coachable, IDK). He has to get into the body to beat the tackle. If the tackle is good with hands he has a hard time. I thought it might have just been the Ole Miss game (not fair maybe that was against Tunsil), saw it again in the Central Michigan game and similar vs Baylor (made one beastly play in this game, that shows up from multiple angles in highlights, but it came off of a botched snap). Three games is kind of enough for me. If Ramsey slips to 7, make the move and get him. Mackenzie Alexander is another. He tackles very well in space, has good ball instincts. As much as we need a DE, I hope we don’t reach. If thats the angle, trade down for Nkemdechie and hope he keeps his head on straight and stays motivated (big iff). It looks like the better value is at DT. We drafted Booger when we had Sapp. Two studs on the interior should make the ends better. This might be Billings, but I might rather roll the dice with Nick Farley in FA versus giving that 9 pick for Billings. But I’m a firm believer, who ever is top on the board other than a QB, draft. Even if that is Myles Jack.
January 27th, 2016 at 2:21 pm
All depends on what we do in free agency first. We may not need to use our 1st at the DE position. I do feel a OT, DE, or CB should be the pick no matter what with our #1 pick. Whatever we don’t fill in FA or if a player falls thats just too good to pass up. We have options which is always a positive.
January 27th, 2016 at 2:47 pm
There aren’t to many exciting prospects outside the top 5 it seems like every other potential draft pick has some fine tuning to be done
January 27th, 2016 at 2:50 pm
The top 5 I speak of Bosa,Goff,Treadwell,Ramsey,Hargreaves
January 28th, 2016 at 12:25 am
Calibuc.
You left out a top 2 or 3 pick at worst Laremy Tunsil. And Treadwell is not a top 5 pick at all.
January 28th, 2016 at 12:26 am
Tunsil will prob be the #1 pick for Tennessee to protect Marcus.
