25% against this hire. Who the hell do these people want. There is not a PERFECT candidate out there. Nick Saban was NOT successful at Miami…
Plenty of good NFL coaches go to other teams and fail….some when given enough time come back…can you say Bill Belicheat..a loser in Cleveland..a loser his first year in NE and now what?
Smith was freaking 56-24 in his first five years. That’s a .700 win % which in the NFL is just mind boggling. The talent hit a lull and he faded in his last two but even there he was bringing the team back with a better record his final year than the sixth.
He had a terrific record as the DC of the Jags and the year he and Koetter were both coordinators the Jags finished with 11 wins and made the playoffs.
I’m not saying Smith is perfect. I’m not saying another guy might not do a better job. I’m asking two questions.
Who on paper…whose resume is sooo much better than Smith’s..would be your first choice. Because trust me no matter WHO you name if he had actually been selected we’d already have the debbie downers here blasting the selection.
We haven’t even talked about the advantage of Koetter and Smith already having a working relationship from two previous teams.
Smith may….or may not…be successful because that will depend on a LOT of things including talent..and some luck..and our competition. But Jeebus I just can’t for the life of me not understand how BUC FANS are not excited about this hire.
I only worry when everyone agrees!!! Some people just like the home run, the quick flashly point on the score board! But the “Real” fans know its about winning the game!! winning the division or pennant!!!
I wasn’t really excited about the hire, but I sure as hell wasn’t disappointed. So for that reason I voted yes. Then when you put it in context with the other defensive hires and the past working relationship with Koetter and Smith, it becomes an even better hire!
Voted yes because of his overall body of work. And also because it’s way too early to think that he won’t be able to do a good job. I’ll wait and see, and hope that he’ll be able to develop the players he’ll coach and provide us with a serviceable defense, while Koetter will develop a potent offense. That ought to be our formula for success. We don’t need to relive the glory days of the Tampa 2, that period is history now and trying to bring that back is just foolish the one of the reasons as to why we root for a shameful franchise.
@bonzai: I’m in the not sure crowd but you won’t see me “whining”. I can guarantee another year of you always patting yourself on the back and how you are always right and everyone else is wrong. Whoever made the suggestion of reading your posts in a retarded voice was right. That’s the only way I can read your bs posts.
I voted no because I was never impressed by the Falcons D and Jax was too long ago. I won’t whine as long as I’m proven wrong. I’d very much like for that to happen.
I voted not sure, because that’s where I’m at with this overall team. Not just the coaches. The team in general. Everything is not sure. No point in getting TOO excited anymore only to be punched in the face when the season begins.
The only coach I’ve whined about was Lovie. I’m in the not sure section just because of how long it’s been since he was a DC and I never felt the Falcon’s D was any good while he was there. But I’m more then willing to give him a chance after the past 2 seasons of the Tampa Cover Nobody
@St.Petebucsfan. I am excited for this pick due to the reasons you state as well as I see Mike Smith coming in and coaching with a chip on his shoulder. He interviewed for other HC positions and was turned down. I see him coming here with some fire in his belly and lord knows we need that. I checked out his resume also and impressive. If Licht can hit it out of the park in the draft and some good to decent FA signings, happy days are here again.
What make you Buc fans think…Coach Smith will be successful? His Defenses were..up and down in Atlanta. And teams scored quite a few passing touchdown against them..including us without Jameis. We could have done much better with this selection. I am not impressed. There is a reason Blankenship fired him in Atlanta as well. He’s bringin those same losing ways to our Bucs. But then again? we are the Bucs huh?

At first i was a little disappointed but i think it is the best move considering we hired Koetter to be the HC.

The “not sures” and “Nos” are the people we’ll have to watch whine all year.

Okay I’m not sure but I lean yes. Is that okay?

The 5% who say nay are the 5% that just agree with any statement made through any media outlet… So I’m not worried!
