Bucs Will Interview Harold Goodwin
January 8th, 2016Add another name to the Bucs’ head coaching mix, and he’s a former member of Lovie Smith’s staff in Chicago: Harold Goodwin, the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator.
ESPN reporter Josina Anderson (more on her later this hour) Twittered the news this morning.
Goodwin, 42, was hired by the Cardinals in early 2013, when Bucs general manager Jason Licht was the right-hand man of Arizona general manager Steve Keim.
Head coach Bruce Arians calls the plays, and Goodwin is the hard-driving, often foul-mouthed coordinator cracking the whip.
An O-lineman as a player, Goodwin was an O-line assistant with the Bears under Lovie before moving on to do the same job with the Steelers, where he won a Super Bowl in 2008.
Goodwin would satisfy the NFL’s “Rooney Rule” for the Bucs, the one that requires teams interview a non-white candidate for the head coaching vacancy.
January 8th, 2016 at 9:39 am
According to the Tampa2 mafia the Bucs were just going to call Lesie Frazier on the phone and ask him what his shoe size was. And then say they met the requirements for the rooney rule interview!!!!!
Let Licht find the best Head Coach!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!
January 8th, 2016 at 9:41 am
Rooney Rule….satisfied early……
January 8th, 2016 at 9:45 am
Rooney Rule sure and I don’t think he has even a 40% chance (even without the Rooney Rule) but if it isn’t Koetter it better be a Tom Coughlin caliber coach or…..
January 8th, 2016 at 9:49 am
Did anyone catch Steven A Smiths rant about this whole deal? He owes the Buccaneers franchise an apology!!!
January 8th, 2016 at 9:51 am
If I were non-white, I’d apply to the nfl for a full time job as the non-white that gets interviewed after every coaching vacancy. With some of these teams it is just a charade to satisfy a ridiculous rule. How insulting it must be to hear you name being used as satisfaction for the Rooney rule. You’re wasting time, you’re getting hopes up for nothing. If I have my mind made up on who I want as my coach, it is highly unlikely I will change my mind because I picked a non-white coaches name out of a hat. Either you’re qualified and I want you or you’re not. Name one coach that got the job because of the Rooney rule. I guarantee every non-white hire was already on a teams radar because they earned it, not because of their skin color. “If” an owner is racist and not going to hire a non-white, this rule won’t change his mind.
January 8th, 2016 at 9:54 am
Racial Quotas in general are a discredit to real efforts to Racial Justice abroad. It really is just an insult to People of Color everywhere and as Aerospace said it must be particularly degrading to the individual called upon to satisfy the rule.

@AceofAerospace :
I agree 100% ! I am expecting that one day they will force teams to interview at least one woman. Its a ridiculous rule and, like you say, if there really is a bigoted team of owners (highly doubtful, they won’t hire a non-white anyway. All they have to say is that they were more impressed by another candidate.

If it weren’t for the Rooney rule, Mike Tomlin wouldn’t be the head coach of the Steelers. There are other examples as well I’m sure. It’s there to give minorities a chance. I don’t understand why anyone is against it. They don’t have to hire the person, but it does force them to at least open the door to a different candidate that otherwise they might not look at.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:06 am
Hawaiian you’re basing that comment on nothing. The $hit I just dropped is smarter than you. However. Tomlin has benefitted from having a sting front office and a Veteran Franchise QB.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:07 am
Here is why I disagree. Goodwin is a legit HC candidate. Now where I do agree, the Eagles interviewed thier RB coach FIRST. There is NO WAY Duce gets that job, and we all know it. Licht wants the best guy, and this dude seems like the real deal.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:11 am
I do think it’s probably just Rooney Rule fulfilment but he does have a connection to Licht. Plus he seems to be a fiery guy which could gel well with Winston. Intriguing candidate if nothing else. I definitely would rather take a chance on someone green than a retread.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:15 am
Realist Said: ask him what his shoe size was…. that’s funny.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:15 am
Being a black male I would love to see more black coaches and front office members but reality is reality . NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!! Me personally i believe the rule needs to be axed. Its a joke and complete waste of time . With tha being said i am a BUCCANEER MAN . SH#T. I have a little league football program that i named the NORTH TAMPA BUCCANEERS so im a BUCCANEER all day i really dont care what the other teams do . All i know is everyone has something to say about our OWNERS but they never acknowledge that THEY are the FAIREST owners in the NFL. ASK DUNGY! ASK HERM!ASK LOVIE!ASK MIKE T!ASK RAH . So those are the reasons i dont get upset because no othteam beside the bucs matter to me and i know they give opportunities TO ALL !!!!!!
January 8th, 2016 at 10:31 am
If they’ve made up their minds already, then yes, this is a sham. Based on what he’s done with the Cardinals, this seems legit. I’d view it as slightly odd, out-of-the-box, a risk, but O-linemen are some of the smartest guys on your time, he has been coaching….
I had read that Tomlin was a “satisfy the Rooney Rule” interview that wasn’t considered a legitimate at all for the Steeler’s job. *This* scenario is where the Rooney rule helps (it forces a team to consider someone they might not have otherwise considered and you might have your mind opened).
Now, if they interviewed an assistant D-backs coach, then yeah, pure sham. If it ends up being Koetter (which I still believe it will be), it’ll still be portrayed as a sham.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:35 am
Funny how everyone thought Lovie Smith was a sure thing good hire. Now everyone believes Koetter is the sure thing. I just hope we find the right guy.
January 8th, 2016 at 10:37 am
This Rooney Rule is the biggest pile of patronizing śh••. We’re going to waste this guy’s time? I seriously hope that Licht lets him bring his family and throws in some Disney tickets.
Equality is a lie; a myth to appeal the masses.

Judging by your amazing sentence with excellent grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, you are definitely much smarter than me. I apologize for being so stupid compared to you. Carry on.

I have never understood the opposition to the Rooney rule. Again, they don’t have to hire them. As for it being a sham, 99% of a team’s interviews start out as a sham. You don’t think a team goes into the interview process with a lead candidate? Of course they do. Most know who they are going to hire before they fire the coach. What the Rooney rule does is force teams to stop interviewing the same 5 or 6 guys year after year, team after team. I doubt we will hire Goodwin, because I believe Koetter is our guy. But you just watch, he will get other interviews as a result of this interview, whether it be this year or next year. This is a copycat league. Eventually someone will hire him as their HC. So while you can say the Rooney Rule might be a sham for our team, it might still be beneficial for another team. Therefore, it is doing what it is supposed to do. There is absolutely nothing wrong with interviewing one extra person. In fact, I want my team to interview as many people as possible.
January 8th, 2016 at 11:02 am
I think many of you completely miss the point of the Rooney Rule. It is not a waste of time to get African-American candidates more face time with ownership groups and more experience interviewing for higher level positions.
It isn’t a waste of time for either side. The team may find a candidate they like, or at least want to keep an eye on for a future opening, and the candidate returns to their coaching role with a much better sense of what they need to do in order to move up the ladder.
Also consider that owners talk. If this guy interviews well, but the Bucs want someone else, I’m sure that will circulate at the league meetings. A year or two later, the candidate is on other teams’ radar.
The rule makes a lot of sense because it doesn’t force hiring – it forces introductions.
Disclaimer: I’m white.

I’m with Hawaii on this one.

Sure the Bucs will interview Goodwin. They will interview many as a..courtesy.
But its all smokescreen. The Bucs will get their new goldenboy, Mr Koetter. The wedding party will be fabulous. And 2 yrs later..the nasty divorce. Our Bucs have a nasty history with black coaches, even players. We refused to Pay Doug Williams. He went on to another city and won a Superbowl. We let Dungy buy the goods and cook the dinner, Gruden came into a readymade team and served a superbowl. Dungy went on to win his superbowl in another city. Now we think..we are close. So we let Lovie Smith go who was building something special because We are impatient. We think we add a few more pieces in the draft and the chosen one Koetter, with no HC experience will deliver us to the promise land. Notice the pattern? I can’t wait to see…your backs turn like snakes..after the losing starts. Good Luck!
January 8th, 2016 at 12:35 pm
@Mike Johnson,
I would respectfully disagree. First of all, Williams was under Culverhouse. You are 100% right on that in my opinion. However, we have completely different ownership now, so that point is moot.
As for Dungy, Gruden did not win with Dungy’s team. There were like 8 different starters on offense. How that is winning with his team is beyond me. I love Dungy, but that firing worked out for us. You cannot revise history and suggest otherwise. I was here at that time, and the city had grown tired of losing early in the playoffs. Even the players have suggested the firing was justified.
Lovie was let go because he was 8-24, and he was getting rid of good players that were starting for other teams. Schiano was 11-21 and he was fired, so it seems to me that he was just being held to the same standard. Nothing wrong with that. I would argue that Licht was building something special, since Licht is in charge of the draft. Time will tell, but Lovie did very little to prove he deserved the job.
January 8th, 2016 at 1:51 pm
@Voice of Reason, completely agree with you 100%. I am white also, the Rooney rule opens the door for people who otherwise may not get an opportunity to show what they know. A particular coach may not be a fit for your organization, but if he impresses and interviewed well that information will be passed on to other organizations looking for a quality person. The Rooney rule is absolutely useful. As you said nobody is forced to make a hire, only have to interview, and you never know what might happen in that interview.
January 8th, 2016 at 2:00 pm
Give Goodwin $5k for a five minute interview to oblige the Rooney Rule. So happy they take it seriously after the GM all but named the Jaguar reject the HC yesterday.
January 8th, 2016 at 2:05 pm
You bring up Schiano’s record. You realize he had a good team Raheem handed him. Schiano gave Lovie crap. With Lovie, the first time the Oline was seriously addressed with Mankins and the two rookies this year. If not for them, Koetter would be cut without a doubt. But, Lovie tripled his wins over last year and the Bucs were mentioned in the playoff hunt late into the season.
It’s okay, Find me a Fire Dirk page and I’ll be apart of it. Glazers have really divided the fans with this. The ones that know the game and the ones that don’t.
Be hilarious if some of the players tweeting yesterday took off. Then blame it all on the instigator, Koetter. I can’t support someone that is breaking the team apart unlike the many sheep out there.

You mean other than when he cut a starting left tackle and gave away a starting center who outplayed our entire line combined in 2014?

At least the league has not mandated a jihadist muslim must be interviewed also. Ya know, discrimination.

Nothing to do with the post, but I’d love to know what exactly Koetter is doing to break the team apart. I hate to be demanding, but you’re going to have to give some real evidence. I just can’t take the word of someone named “wazzup”.
I’m very confused with why someone that would be ok with hiring Koetter is a sheep. Most people who supported Lovie (myself included for much of the time) were called sheep, now those that aren’t crying he’s gone are sheep too? It seems to me the trend is that if there are people that disagree with your beliefs, they are automatically called sheep. SMH

Hawaiian Buc your comments are cogent and spot on. I wish Affirmative Action was not necessary but as long as those who have power prefer to deny access to anyone different than them, I am thankful there are laws that open access. Ultimately sports should be a true merit based system on and off the field. If you can play, you deserve a chance, if you can coach you deserve a chance irrespective of things like skin color. No one is ever forced to hire a coach they don’t want, but for fans to object to owners even meeting with someone to both give them an opportunity and to give them exposure to other teams who may want them shows just how far we have to go as a country and just how insecure some are that any other person advancing is taking something from them.
January 8th, 2016 at 6:21 pm
Nice how nearly every one of you guys are assuming this guy isn’t qualified, just because the Bucs are obligated to interview at least one minority candidate.
It’s stuff like this that is exactly why the Rooney Rule is important.
