Dirk Koetter Rumors And Reality

January 5th, 2016

Jameis Koetter

Good guy Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com and SiriusXM NFL Radio has Twittered that the Eagles are thinking about Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter as a possible head coach candidate.

Joe also thinks about Rachel Watson joining Joe for a weekend of lambada dancing in Key Largo.

Joe’s point here is that there’s no reason to jump to all kinds of conclusions. Marvez didn’t say Koetter was scheduled for an interview. Anything claim but that is just hot air until an interview is on the table.

Also, Joe thinks it is clear that Koetter and his team aren’t interested in crafting a PR campaign to get Koetter’s name all over the place and drive public interest in him as a head coaching candidate. (See Adam Gase, whose resumé does not compare to Koetter’s).

Does Koetter want to leave for a head coaching gig? Koetter has had every opportunity to say, “No.” Joe set him up with that question a few weeks ago. Here was Koetter’s response:

Koetter has interviewed for NFL head coaching gigs in previous seasons, and now he’s led three franchises — and three quarterbacks — to a top-10-ranked offense. That feat hasn’t been accomplished, to the best of Joe’s research, since the late Ed Hughes, whose last top-10 offense was with the dominant Bears of the 1980s.

Look for the Koetter chatter to keep swirling. Team Glazer likely has the power to end it, if they reached out to Koetter with an attractive extension and raise.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Koetter is interviewed….but I would be surprised if he was hired.
Most teams want a new coach that has come from a winning program….and Koetter coached a team that lost their last 4 games.
Even though the defense was poor….the offense failed miserably those last 4 games with much of their yardage/points coming after the game was out of reach.
The only team that would make sense for Koetter as a head coach would be the Bucs.

  2. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

I can endure another season under Lovie if forced upon us (which it appears is the case), but if it comes down to firing him to keep Koetter with the Bucs (as in HC) then the Glazer’s will hopefully do the right thing for the QB they just bet the farm on.

  3. Johnny "America's Commenter" Dejay Says:

Dirk Koetter is going to get some serious interest this off season. The Bucs need to do whatever it takes to keep him, even if it means promoting him to HC here in Tampa Bay.

  4. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

If Koetter goes, then all hope is lost. Not in Jameis, but, in the current coaching staff. I was hoping for continuity to continue the progress on offense.

I guess you try to trade for Sean Payton? Obviously that won’t fix the defense problem. You just hope that Licht can find a good DC, and scrap the current system.

Would love to see him promoted to HC, but, it’s the Glazer boys. Who are we kidding?

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Maybe he wanted to come to TB after watching the 2-14 Bucs and his Falcons offense destroy the Bucs @ Atlanta in 2014. Just knowing that if he came here it was only a matter of time that he might be Lovie’s replacement.

That’s my thoughts and I’m sticking to them.

  6. R.O. Says:

He’s already the highest if not one of the highest paid OC’s in the league. Also you have the assistants leave stable gigs with good QBs to unstable teams with no QBs. To get fired in three years because they weren’t given time to find a Franchise QB. Why go to teams with no QB. Only job I would consider is NYGs.

  7. Couch Fan Says:

If Koetter goes, then all hope is lost.
    —————-

Agreed. Without Koeter we’re are looking at 2-14 all over again. Love Jameis but we’ll have no coaching on either side of the ball.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Since when would anyone be interested in a Bucs assistant coach as a head coach….
Oh, that’s right…….Lovie Smith, Herm Edwards, Marvin Lewis, Mike Tomlin, Rod Marinelli…..(may have missed some)

I think Koetter would be the first not from the Dungy fold….

  9. DallasBuc Says:

I will forever associate the awful new uniforms with the historically disappointing reign of incompetent Lovie Smith. Maybe when Koetter is hired as HC or whoever else it mercifully ends up being we can revert those unis too.

  10. Onetrickpony Says:

IF Lovie goes next year and they were to bring in someone for head coach how would we know if they would keep him or bring someone else in?

  11. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Marvin Lewis?

He’s from either the Steelers tree, or Billick.

    Marvin Lewis?

He’s from either the Steelers tree, or Billick.

Correct…..he almost became our HC…….my mistake.

  13. Pick6 Says:

obviosly the bucs’ coaching gigs are not the league’s most coveted, but still….would you leave a highly paid gig as Jameis Winston’s beloved coordinator in sunny, laid-back Tampa to be the head coach that has to face THAT fan base after chip kelly has sent their most explosive players packing? for god’s sake, here in tampa he’s on the brink of getting a street named after him after a 6-10 season. but yeah, i bet sam bradford slinging it to riley cooper on a snowy november afternoon while the home fans at the Linc are swearing at your family in the stands sounds awesome to Dirk

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Pick6

I don’t think Koetter has a burning desire to be a head coach…..maybe only with the right team (Bucs)…..certainly not Philadelphia….keep in mind that they wanted to retain Kelly but strip him of some of his power….he refused…so they fired him.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Koetter will take a HC job sooner or later, it’s just the reality of life.

But, the Glazers have the ability to promote him to assistant coach and offer him more money to stay here as a coordinator, just like Malcom did with Monte Kiffin all those years. His play calling has still been very questionable at times too, so I think the media is pimping his name more than there is real interest in him. Also, f@ck Becht for trying to lure him away on the radio every day.

Unless something drastic happens (Lovie getting fired, Koetter leaving) which I don’t think it will, I’m gonna take some time away from the Bucs and this site. I’m going to enjoy watching the playoffs, and not think about this pathetic team for a few weeks. I’ll see y’all around March when the draft is getting closer. Good luck Bucs fans.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…if the Glazers strip Lovie of some of his power. I’ll shut up about him this whole off-season.

  17. Pick6 Says:

TBBF, i don’t it’s something he is fixated on either. my point is even if he was, i doubt that the philly job after recent events is definitely not the one that he has been waiting his whole life for – it’s a mess and the fans will be brutal the whole time. some guys are so driven to be an NFL head coach or feel the offer is too rare to turn down that they will go anywhere – that’s kinda how tony dungy ended up here, honestly. other guys are happy to do what they are doing unless it’s all lined up perfectly, or just don’t want the Big Chair. right or wrong, if a guy hasn’t gotten his shot in the NFL by Dirk’s age and isn’t running a dominant college program (Saban, Carroll, etc), the chance has probably passed him by. you don’t see many first time NFL head coaches in their mid to late 50s these days

    Chan Gailey trumped him Joe

    Chan Gailey (Top 10 Finishes)
    • 1990 DEN 8th – John Elway
    • 1997 PIT 6th – Kordell Stewart
    • 1998 DAL 8th – Troy Aikman
    • 2015 NYJ 10th – Ryan Fitzpatrick

  19. OnlyGodnoles Says:

Team Glazer should call his bluff, am loving my minority status in thinking that koetter is a product of JW’s talent JW is very coachable he is like a sponge makes it easy on coaches to coach him. There is a queue of OCs foaming at mouth to work with JW then next season with a new OC we’ll hear the chatter how they are HC material this is so predictable like shooting fish in barrel!

  20. Connor Says:

Fire Lovie. Hire Koetter before another team does. Or at least demote Lovie to defensive coordinator.

  21. briandorry55 Says:

He’s already the highest paid coordinator in the league…how much of a raise can they give him? Not anything close to what he will get as a head coach. Make him the head coach here…if he leaves, another year for Lovie will be pointless.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Well the silly season has arrived! It’s not just us either. I saw Herm Edwards seriously pimping for Marvin Lewis to leave the Bengals to rebuild the Browns!!!
Herm seems to be peeved that Mike Brown has never paid Marvin what Herm thinks Lewis is worth. Talk about a silly move though. Leave a team with a franchise QB just really maturing…the best DT in the game..for the freaking Browns. First off who is going to be the Browinies QB next year?

Why do you guys still harbor these delusional fantasies that this team will fire Lovie and replace him with Koetter? Do you guys even think about what this means to the team? The defense starts from scratch with an unnamed DC.
The players are all thrown into different relationships with their position coaches.

Sean Payton is an interesting thought. I think he would jump at a chance to start again with a young QB with potential who won’t wreck the cap for a few more years. I respect Drew Brees…but 100 million…37 million signing bonus…20 million a year? Too much for any QB or single player. One injury and you’ve just hosed away 20 million a year for several years in dead cap.

I don’t know how Payton and Licht would work out.

“Team Glazer should call his bluff, am loving my minority status in thinking that koetter is a product of JW’s talent…”

How would that account for his past successes?

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m all for Koetter taking over for Lovie…after next year.

The last thing we need right now is an offensive coach that cannot build a defense through the draft. Give it one more year first. Get a defensive draft in the books.

  25. Skyline Crew Says:

So far Eagles and Miami are interested. More will follow.

  26. MTM Says:

How many draft picks do the Glazers need to give Cleveland to get them to take Lovie?

  27. Joe Says:

How many draft picks do the Glazers need to give Cleveland to get them to take Lovie?

    LOL

  28. Marquee Mark Says:

If Koetter goes then good luck to him. It’s not like Winston hasn’t called his own plays in some series this year. All long as we keep drafting players that are originally or has played in the state of Florida we will be ok. You can’t coach heart so it won’t matter who our OC or HC is.

NCAA National Championship will prove the worth of FLorida athletes.
