Pushing Jameis For Rookie Honor

High praise from a numberscruncher.
We all know what Joe thinks of obscure stats and the Pro Football Focus crowd (this just in: many NFL suits and coaches, including Bill Belicheat, think much less of them).
One pretty good stat man, when Joe can sift through all the made-up acronyms, is a guy named Chase Stuart.
This guy Stuart has a site called FootballPerspective.com and writes for the New York Times and Washington Post. He makes his case for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to be the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in non-stat geek form.
[Jameis has] done it for a passing attack that was garbage last year, and he’s done it with a lot of air yards. I don’t judge QBs by wins, but I think Winston does deserve some credit for the team’s jump from 2-14 to 6-9. Vincent Jackson and ASJ have basically combined to miss one full season, so Winston has not been working with much else other than Mike Evans (and Jackson/ASF have hardly been great while healthy).
I also thought Winston would be bad this year, so perhaps that is biasing my view. He is outperforming his expectations, so I am more impressed than most, I guess. But I think it’s clear that Winston has been better than even the average good rookie QB, while Gurley has basically been the average good rookie RB or slightly better.
That’s an interesting point. Jameis has accomplished what he has done this season without three of his top four targets for so many games (Jackson, ASJ, Louis Murphy).
Just what veteran quarterback would have a good year losing three of his top four receivers? Look how injuries in Green Bay to so many wide receivers made Aaron Rodgers look mortal at times.
And Jameis pulled this off as a 21-year-old rookie, not a seasoned veteran on the cusp of a Hall of Fame career. And he’s saddled with a sieve of a secondary and defenders who break down mentally at the sight of a flag.

He arguably could have between 8-10 wins his rookie year if it were not for his head coach who coaches like he himself is a rookie.

I dont get the Gurley pick for ROY. He sat out 4 games and that is huge. If he wins he will get the RO 3/4 Y award. I think you have to play 15-16 games to win these awards or it loses validity.
For me Winston is the selection but you heard it here first…the media picks these things and it will go to “Gurley” who is more loved by the media than Winston. The FSU scandal cloud is still looming over #3. Unfortunate but true.

Last ODB Jr won despite playing in 12 games. This year Gurley is 3rd in rushing yards and didn’t gets my carries in his first game yet is 3rd in rushing, averages almost 5 years a carry and has 5 td’s. Let’s not forget there’s a pretty sweet receiver from Oakland that has helped turnaround that franchise. All could be seen as deserving.
Today is somewhat of a national game for JW so that could hurt or help him. Last game against ST Louis non-fans of either team saw him stink it up and turned it off before garbage time.

Fameis is easily the winner of the award! I don’t think there has really been a lot of debate. Mariota’s injury just makes it that much easier.
It’s hard to not get excited about next year…especially if we could just get healthy!!!

As long as the judges dont judge him from his off field days in College, I think its a no brainer that he’s rookie of the year. Gurley has had a good season to but rookie record setting QBs almost always take home the award. GO JAMEIS and GO BUCS!!

Gurley will win. He only rushed for 50 yards in TNF but media was praising him. If MM had 6 wins he would have ROY in the bag but media still hates JW.

I think we should all expect the #1 overall pick to be the ROY, especially at the QB position.

If Jameis doesn’t win it it shows the media’s bias.
Jameis has half as many rushing TDs as Gurley and will finish with at least 27 total TDs and nearly 4000 yards and lead his team to 6 wins.
The reason odb won last year was his yardage totals for only 13 games was insane. Gurley will be 3rd in rushing, he’s a worthy candidate but no way he gets it over Winston

He may be ROY, but I still think we picked the wrong QB. His weaknesses (slow release, poor accuracy under pressure, terrible footwork and horribly inconsistent on accuracy) will be exposed badly (and were.. look how he regressed in the last 5-6 games). JW had a league leading rusher, 3 plus receivers (with at least 2 uninjured for most games) while Marriota had very little around him and suffered injuries on some cheap shots.
As for JW supposed strengths coming out of college, being NFL ready, either he is not, or his coaches do not trust him because I can’t recall a single time he audibled out of a run facing a 8 or even 9 man box which he faced almost every 1st and 2nd down.
Even with the advantages JW had with talent around him and a running game, he was outperformed by Mariotta..
