Trying To Dump The Deuce
December 31st, 2015Here’s a trivia question for you:
In 2015, how many more interceptions does Darrelle Revis have than all Bucs cornerbacks combined?
The answer is three!
Revis has five. For the Bucs, Sterling Moore has one, and Alterraun Verner has one. That’s it. (Keep in mind, Revis isn’t thrown at terribly often.)
Yes, Joe realizes this revelation might start New Year’s Eve drinking early — from the suburban bars of Wesley Chapel to the dives of Indian Rocks Beach.
Joe doesn’t have the stomach to research the last time Bucs cornerbacks only had two interceptions combined in a season. Has it ever happened? Last year, Johnthan Banks had four himself.
Joe sure hopes redemption comes for the cornerbacks on Sunday against Cam Newton. Every single Bucs cornerback could be gone next season, but Joe still would like to see that ugly deuce wiped out.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:07 am
He’d still be the best player on our team. Cutting him will always be one of the worst moves in Bucs history. There isn’t a single justifiable reason to do, and no, the cap hit is not an excuse. Revis is 5 times as good as our entire corner group combined. Staggering mistake.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:10 am
Lovie preaches turnovers and we get this.
All the while Joe believes Lovie deserves a 3rd year.
Joe you can keep typing it, but I know you’re too smart to believe that.
If you choose to continue to accuse Joe of lying, then you will be punished. –Joe
December 31st, 2015 at 11:10 am
It seems impossible in today’s nfl that a team, supposedly predicated on creating turnovers, would only have two interceptions. From the corners. We have more secondary coaches than CB interceptions.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:10 am
It’s hard to get interceptions when your defense is routinely out of place or playing so far off the receiver that they have yards of green grass before a defender is even encountered. The most we can hope for is that they have someone doing a Mike Evans impersonation and they drop a perfectly easy, catchable ball that is tipped up to our DBs who are 10 yards away
December 31st, 2015 at 11:12 am
Patrick….your words are funny and depressing.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:14 am
When QB’s complete 70% of passes against the D, INTs are hard to come across. Maybe Lovie is not putting enough INTs and Fumble Recoveries into his game plan????
December 31st, 2015 at 11:22 am
Man, that Revis guy is a pretty good player. We need someone like that. 😉
December 31st, 2015 at 11:23 am
It takes several hall of famers and pro-bowers to run lovie’s prevent lite defense!!!!
December 31st, 2015 at 11:24 am
Revis would have been misused in this defense just like he was in Schiano’s. Doesn’t make sense to pay a guy $20MM a year if you’re not going to take advantage of his talents. Lovie wagered his defense wouldn’t need a guy like Revis. I bet they draft a “Revis” this spring though. They need more man coverage ability and I have a feeling Lovie knows that too.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:34 am
We will have an entirely different Secondary Next year
Through the Draft and Free Agency
With their TOTAL COMBINED Salaries less than Revis’ $20 Million.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:37 am
I knew that the moment we let him go that lovie would not be the right guy for this team. Everyone thought I was crazy for not wanting the most talented defender on the team walk away.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:38 am
“The dive bars of Indian rocks beach” tend to be over priced and filled with retirees, most from out of state. The good dive bars are just over the bridge in west Largo by Anona 🙂
But yeah, stupid move to get rid
December 31st, 2015 at 11:43 am
The Revis release made sense financially. The problem is who Lovie replaced him with and how he misused him. This is why I have little faith that Lovie can put people in the right place to succeed. Remember the failures on defense are with players that Lovie selected on his final 53 roster. If success comes next year it will be with a small step forward on defense and a much bigger step on offense.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:43 am
Haha I love that picture of Revis, he stole a cool 16 mill from the glazers and got to rehab his knee at the finest facilities in Florida then get traded and wins a Super bowl I’d be laughing my ass off too!

How? The Bucs were not then, are not now, and are not projected to have any cap issues for a while. Right now saying he’d be overpaid is laughable seeing as we’d kill for someone with half his talent making $10 million per, so he’s worth it. He had a PAYG contract, so anytime they did want to cut him there were no cap implications.

And who’s that on? Acquiring one of the 10 best players in the NFL doesn’t happen easily, or often for that matter. Players like that do not grow on trees, clearly. That Lovie decided before even one chance to see Revis on the field he didn’t need the best player at his position in the league. That is….wow.
December 31st, 2015 at 11:56 am
keeping revis made no sense for the type of money he was making…its like having jj watt dropping into coverage 75% of the time…oopps..schaino already did that…GO BUCS!!!
December 31st, 2015 at 12:01 pm
@bucrightoff….licht had something to do with it too…who’s to say lovie wanted revis but licht didn’t…even though lovie has control of the final 53, licht has control of the bank…if licht didn’t want to pay revis, theres nothing lovie could do….they work together regarding players..it aint all lovie all the time…GO BUCS!!!

December 31st, 2015 at 12:32 pm
As much as I love Licht’s drafting, his pro player decisions have been horrible. Releasing Revis for nada, Penn, Zuttah. Trading for George Johnson. Brindza. Signing Collins, Michael Johnson, and ATV. Just horrible.
December 31st, 2015 at 12:33 pm
Joe,
Your funny Brotha. One minute your bashing stats… the next minute your using them to prove a point.
Your right, Revis has 5 picks. That makes grand total of *28 in 9yrs.
The Jets DB’s (Revis included) played terrible for a stretch this year. For about 5 weeks, they gave up an average of 350 yards in the air.
Then Revis got tourched against the Texans. Relaxed on IR for 3 or 4 weeks (concussion protocol). Came back to another pro bowl birth, and two picks (both gifts IMO).
I can’t recall anyone saying he was a a good year before the concussion.
-I heard alot of Revis-is overrated.
-I heard alot Revis is no longer an elite corner.
I remember, alot of guys out of New York laughing at the thought of Revis playing against- Odell Beckham Jr. Gloating, that It would probably wise for Revis to Ice up for another week.
Not sure where you’re going with this and what it has to do with anything. You never heard Joe blubbering about Revis being overrated, etc. Our head coach claims takeaways are crucial. So Joe’s highlighting a contrast and a telling Bucs stat. –Joe
December 31st, 2015 at 12:42 pm
The only reason releasing Revis made financial sense is so the money can be spent on Michael Johnson, Anthony Collins and Alterraun Verner….sooooo. How’d that work out?
December 31st, 2015 at 12:43 pm
I can’t recall anyone saying Revis was *having – a good year before the concussion

Consider this…when did Mark Dominick’s drafts improve? When the Bucs hired Schiano.
Why? Because it’s the head coach that decides the draft picks.
Licht had input on these drafts, but it is Lovie who made the picks. That being the case, just what exactly has Licht actually done well?
December 31st, 2015 at 12:49 pm
Bonzai – you many be right. Lovie could be primarily responsible for this stellar draft.
December 31st, 2015 at 12:57 pm
Consider This: The Jets boast one of the best defensive lines in the league, from a pressure stand point
(Passing Downs)
LDE Muhammad Wilkerson
NT Sheldon Richardson
RDE Leonard Williams
Yet the Jets blitzed a league-high 50.1 percent of the dropbacks.

The reason why the Revis release was a mistake is because the players we replaced with the Revis money didn’t work out…..
We are now very very smart and know that…..how smart were we then?
Some were….but most thought Verner was a steal and Michael Johnson was a prize pickup….
The lesson learned is that you go with the sure thing…even if it’s expensive.

Someone’s angry and bitter. Probably because you thought cutting him and signing Verner and Johnson instead was a brilliant move. Further confirming your staggering lack of intelligence.
December 31st, 2015 at 1:27 pm
I appauled the Verner move. ONLY because I’ve watched the kid play ball, since his UCLA days. I know, and respect the man who helped him perfect his craft (The Great Carnell Lake). The Kid was an All-Pro before he arrived.
Now what’s happen since, has alot wondering WTF is going on in Tampa.
December 31st, 2015 at 1:52 pm
I agree letting Revis go was a mistake. But even if he stayed, he would look almost as inept as everything else we have simply because Lovie has no clue how to use talent or teach his defense. Thats whats happening in Tampa and its painfully obvious. Only 1 more year before he’s fired. Can’t wait!
December 31st, 2015 at 2:17 pm
Keep Verner and Banks, get a REAL DC and tell lovie hands off change the scheme……Draft Jalen Ramsey (he can play CB and Safety…this is where I am right now) Then move up and draft DE Shawn Oakman 6’9 freak from Baylor or DE Devonte Fields from Louisville if he decides to come out. Both will be bottom of first/top of second.
But Im really starting to key in on Ramsey as our #1 if he’s still there. Well, unless Bosa is possible. And if they’re both gone then DE Ogbah.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:17 pm
At least we got all those other free agents… Oh wait. Well we never run man coverage… Oh wait.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:19 pm
Hey LUV, that Williams pick plus Sheldon from last year…thats a lot havoc to deal with.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:20 pm
Im excited to see DE Myles Garrett continue to develop. He’ll probably be the #1 overall pick in 2017.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:24 pm
Gene Chizik is who we need. He worked with Dungy, Kiffin, and Lovie. He knows the cover 2. He is the DC of the NC Tarheels. He is a good choice. He used to drive to One Buc to take notes and pick the coaches brains and was allowed in meetings. Eventually Dungy let Chizik eat with the team and even gave him a bucs jacket one day when Gene got caught in the rain.

Bruh, Me & U were talking about this sh!t; before the season started.
That defensive front is insane. Especially when you consider, the creative blitz pkgs Bowles uses.
We might have to sell the farm for Myles Garrett in 2017. He’s that good.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:32 pm
Did I mention Gene Chizik won it all as HC of Auburn in 2010? 14-0. A winner who needs to move up and has the pedigree to do what Lovie needs done.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:37 pm
Now that we are lamenting all the Buc’s past mistakes…..let me express my disappointment in us giving up a number one overall pick on Bo Jackson….
December 31st, 2015 at 2:43 pm
Coulda/woulda/shouda…I’m so sick of all of you using the comparison, Yeah we coulda had this coach, or we shoulda done this. The fact is we are what our record says we are..a below average team. And all arrows point to our Defense. Lets hope all minds at Buc 1 place truly get together and fix it. Because when we do, we are gonna be something else. If Lovie Smith wants to take us to glory and stay past 2016, he must make changes. Get lotsa help
in Defensive coaching and players. I want to see just how stubborn he is..Or if he, Sees The Light!! I truly hopes for his sake he..Wakes up and smells the coffee or..Schiano has a reel and rod along with some fresh bait waitin by the dock for him.
December 31st, 2015 at 2:47 pm
@Couch Fan
You can keep trying to convince yourself that Lovie is going to get fired, but it’s NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!! Lovie is your Daddy so get used to it son!!
You “non-sensical” radicals keep trying to say that “WE’RE” the idiots for NOT wanting to fire Lovie Smith after only 2 years, but other coaches are preaching the EXACT OPPOSITE!!
Ron Rivera speaking on the Bucs “You look at the defense, I was fortunate to work for coach Smith and learn from him the system. You watch these guys play the system and you know they’re well on their way. The thing everybody’s got to do is be patient. I mean, this is a young football team with a young quarterback. We’re in our fifth season with our quarterback and look at where we’re at now. I see so much similarities between him (Winston) and our guy (Newton). I’m going man, this guy is going to be competitive for a long time. So I think everybody just needs to be patient”
Ron Rivera was also a victim of the Panther’s “non-sensical” radicals calling for his head. Turned out to be a stupid after thought given the current situation.
Bill Belichik also chimed in about how he was disappointed about the Eagles firing chip Kelly!!
http://nesn.com/2015/12/bill-belichick-chip-kelly-firing-disappointing-a-lot-of-ex-eagles-not-doing-much/
Now I don’t know about all of you, but i’m going to follow Rivera and Belichik’s lead and PREACH PATIENCE!! I’m going to trust the opinion of the PROFESSIONALS who actually do this for a living and IGNORE the opinions of fake GM’s(aka fans) who THINK THEY KNOW WHAT’s BEST for our franchise just because they LOG A FEW HOURS OF MADDEN EVERY WEEK!! The reality is… YOU DON’T KNOW JACK SH!T!!!
“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith
P.S. Happy New Year!!
December 31st, 2015 at 2:57 pm
Another thing that really helped the Panthers was drafting Star and Kawaan…..two other D guys I was watching closely and said we could benefit from. But no, we had to trade a 1st for Revis…..smh.

One love, Oh I do believe
One love is all we need”
December 31st, 2015 at 3:08 pm
Its funny how we all worried about the Bucs not giving McCoy a big new deal. We need to lock him down, give him whatever he wants, they all said. And on the other hand, some of us were complaining that Revis was making too much (I was one of those). But, production wise, we really got screwed. We paid a good player an elite players salery, and let a hall of famer walk for nothing. Nothing too deep here just further justification for our position in the cellar. Embrace the suck.
December 31st, 2015 at 3:19 pm
Both INTs were in the Giants game too. When you’re consistently 3-4 yards off the WR at the point of reception, interceptions are gonna be hard to come by.

Yup, Star too….and I thought Kawaan would be a nice 2nd to that 1 -2 punch…even though we had GMC, I just wasnt sold on him. Now he’s got that fat check and while I know he needs help and he’s been playing through injury, I just dont know about him right now. The 2nd we spent on Banks looks like a bleh. So imagine that D line if we had drafted either of those 4…..especially had we drafted 2 of them. lol. Oh well, know what they say about hindsight! But WE had the foresight!!!

Bucboi has a great point IMO. We need more talent on defense to make Lovies scheme, or ANY scheme work. That doesn’t mean that we need Pro Bowlers at every position, but I doubt that any coach could get much more out of our defensive players. The knock on Lovie has been that he is stubborn and will never change, but he has already shown change. He only drafted 1 defensive player in two drafts. For him, that couldn’t have been easy. If we would have drafted more for defense, we would have said “same old Lovie, doesn’t care about offense”. This is why I’ve said to give him 2 defensive drafts to get that side of the ball some “real players” instead of UFA’s. I know this isn’t a popular opinion, and I don’t know if I could keep him if I was in charge. Where I’m at right now is he has the Offense “fixed”, let’s give him a chance to do the same on D. I don’t think our D players could play better in any defense. Need more talent than a bunch of undrafted FA. That being said, if we have a defensive draft and it doesn’t look like it will work out, I could easily be swung to the “Fire Lovie” crowd next offseason.
December 31st, 2015 at 5:44 pm
Yeah I wouldn’t be upset if we drafted Henry

January 1st, 2016 at 10:31 pm
I don’t see Alterraun Verner, Mike Jenkins or Sterling Moore returning next year. Johnthan Banks and Jude Adjei-Barimah will be back-ups. We can turn this defense around with three draft picks and four players in FA. Take DE Robert Nkemdiche (Miss State) in the first, CB Desmond King (Iowa) in the second and FS Darian Thompson (Boise State) in the third. In FA go all in and sign DE Mario Williams (Bills), LB Bruce Irvin (Seahawks), CB Leon Hall (Bengals) and FS Eric Weddle (Chargers).
2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting defense –
DE Mario Williams
DT Gerolld McCoy
DT Akeem Spence
DE Robert Nkemdiche
OLB Lavonte David
ILB Kwon Alexander
SLB Bruce Irvin
CB Desmond King
CB Leon Hall
FS Eric Weddle
SS Darian Thompson
