Derrick Brooks Wags A Finger At O-Line
December 20th, 2015Nothing like catching a passionate Derrick Brooks after a Bucs game. The man has Hall of Fame takes.
“You can’t let him take over a game like that,” Brooks said of Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s dominant performance Thursday.
Brooks, speaking on WDAE-AM 620, honed in on the Bucs’ failure on 4th-and-1 on the Rams’ 23 yard line, with the Bucs trailing 14-3 midway through the second quarter.
Donald blew up the handoff in the backfield, and Brooks was left shaking his head.
“It’s 4th-and-inches. It’s an attitude play that you talk about in training camp,” Brooks said. “Goal line drill. Only probably drill you go full speed and it’s full tilt to the ground, [including] the backs. Only person that’s probably off-limits is the quarterback. It’s mano-y-mano. We’re going to get an inch. And the guy darn near takes the handoff. That’s what’s disappointing.”
Joe’s film review of that play shows Donald moved over to the right side of the defensive line squared off 1-on-1 versus left guard Logan Mankins. He got blown up and shoved aside for the tackle.
Brooks didn’t have a problem with the Bucs not going for the quarterback sneak there. His only beef was with the attitude shown on the play.
“Offensively, you got to have a little more pride,” Brooks said.

Mr. Derrick Excuse would wag a finger at the D-line as well, But that would be criticizing Lovie. And being a Tampa2-ite we would never do that!!!!

meant to say
“he would never do that!!!!”

So true Realist. Brooks should be forced to do a disclaimer before he comes on:
“Lovie Smith is one of my very best friends. Do not expect anything but biased analysis that will never blame Lovie. Lovie is an excellent coach, one of the best ever. He deserves no fault ever for the Bucs performance. It’s all on the players on offense”

Mankins isnt that good but I cant blame him to much. Great players like Donald make plays when they need him to. We just arent used to seeing that kind of play from DT….

I think we could have lined up quicker and played with them on the snap count… I dont think we get to the line quick enough and play games at the line to keep the dline from teeing off.

Jaboo got hit in the head on that run no flag. He also appeared to have enough for a first down. I think the announcer even stated that. Pushing and shoving ensue we call time out and never even challenge the spot. Come back from time out and it’s 4th and 1. What? Huge point in the game.

Is this bunch really worth all of this emotion? They are what they are.

Lol realist and couch.

Whole team was soft that game. I’m not gonna call it quit, but when they come out that flat as a WHOLE, there’s only one person to blame.

Pregame I thought Donald might get a sack, but never cause that level of domination of the Bucs O line. This is a unit that seemed to be improving and the Bucs and fans were high on the potential. Reality bit.

Jason Pierre Paul and Mario Williams.
The only way we can make it to the Super Bowl while GMC is in his prime, is if we sign two great DE’s.
Without a 4 man rush. This team will never stop the pass or make it to the playoffs.
Rookies won’t do.
Lovie took the Bears to the Super Bowl because he made Julius Peppers the highest paid player in the league.
Julius Peppers sacked and pressured QBs on every down.
We need DE’s that can scare QB’s.
So, we either make Von Miller the highest paid DE in the league or we find a way to get Jason Pierre Paul AND Mario Williams.
Go Bucs!!!

Teacherman I agree w you to an extent.
We could use a guy like JPP on the edge. We need a true 43 DE w speed and athleticism.
I like Von Miller but not at DE. I’d put him at strong side for Lansanah. But you’re right, for the money he wants, I’m not sure that’s even a discussion.

Jameis Winston makes the offensive line good by getting rid of the ball quickly moving in the pocket, scrambling and calling protections. I am completely sold on the rookies on the offensive line and all position the rookies are playing.

The OL got manhandeled by Aaron Donald Thursday night and it wasn’t just Logan Mankins. Where ever Donald lined up he dominated the LOS. Ali Marpet got blown up as well. Joe Hawley, Donovan Smith and Gosder Cherilus looked average as usual. Cherilus was called for Illegal Formation. How the #$@% does a veteran get called for that, at this time of the year? Why is Demar Dotson inactive? The bigger story is why didn’t any of the Bucs OL have Winston’s back in this game? Joe, did you ask any of the OL that question? I am sure their reply will be that their coach has told them to focus on eliminating penalties and even if their QB was about to get mugged, don’t risk a penalty?

The Rams jumped on the Bucs like a big bully picking on a 98 pound weakling. The Bears may be beatable with the Bucs best effort.

The old saying was ” Remember the Alamo”. The New saying to remember now is ” Remember Washington”!
