Jameis Too Hyped?

Too emotional?

Too emotional?

We have all seen by now more than one video of America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, giving a rousing pregame speech that demands teammates have each other’s backs.

Thursday night, Jameis’ teammates showed how they had each other’s backs by kicking running backs as they lay prone on the turf, tossing footballs out of an end zone like some three-year girl throwing a tantrum because she had her dolls taken away, and dropped passes too many to count without fast-balling an empty beer bottle through a window.

One reason for the poor first half Jameis may have been too amped. That’s what Bucs coach Lovie Smith thought in his day after presser.

“Fair to say Jameis and some others were a little bit more [emotional],” Lovie said. “Everybody wants to play well. It’s a different setting [in primetime]. Jameis would probably tell you that. We can take care of those type of things right there. The least of our problems are our quarterback being a little bit too excited.”

Lovie’s point is reinforced by the fact Jameis had an amazing fourth quarterback that damned near got the Bucs back in the game.

Joe, and most other Bucs fans, enjoy Jameis’ fire and emotion. But there’s a big difference between passion and getting so worked up you are not executing properly.

Make up our minds……outThis or Josh Freeman’s non leadership

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    He’s a kid Joe, he’ll settle down.

I don’t ever want this kid to be less emotional. I want him to stay the way he is.

  3. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

I’m more worried being around loser Lovie is gonna damage his confidence and swagger. Gotta think Lovie is the biggest loser Jameis has ever been around. Everyone saw Lovie quit on the game down 21-3 with a minute left and not using any timeouts right? Stuff like that has to kill Jameis who wants to fight, fight fight instead of turtle, turtle, turtle.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

Lovie Is Dog Poo…yep and noticed how the camera flashed to Winston 2 separate times during that whole scenario you just mentioned. Winston did not look happy with Lovie’s decision. That was obvious.

  5. asdf Says:

Can the bucs please fire Lovie after this season and promote Koetter to HC?

Continues continuity on the offense (for Jameis) and then we can hire a real DC who isn’t stuck in the belief that the same concepts that worked 10 years ago (in a completely different NFL) will work in today’s NFL.

  6. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

Forget Koetter, go big, go for Sean Payton. Saints are a mess and he might be looking for the exit door. Imagine Payton and Jameis? Even the Lovie Loser Crew would I’m sure 100% be in favor of firing him to get Payton. Or maybe not.

  7. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

Off topic I know, but I did want to the the Joe’s (Steve in particular) for the kick ass watch party at Golfer’s Grail. $10 was a steal to get in.. not only for the food but the fact that an A-hole _____(insert opposing team’s fan here) is not going to pay to watch the game around other Buc fans. REALLY good time. Please make this a regular thing next season if possible.

  8. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Let’s be real here. Our defense was beyond awful. Dare I say they looked like they quit. Mentally soft players who clearly need a kick in the ass. I don’t think Lovie is the kind of guy who can deliver that kick.

  9. Joe Says:

    Rob in Land O’ Lakes:

Thanks for the kind words. Really glad you had a good time with the game being such a drag.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

Prior to the Bucs Jameis ain’t too familiar with losing. The Bucs on the other hand are well versed in all aspects of the art of losing. Positive force meets a seemingly unmovable object and all that negativity built up stacked high.

  11. LargoBuc Says:

Jameis should be heated! The Rams tried the fk outa him and our defense just gets btched up

  12. BrianBucs Says:

All Bucs fans, and even Jameis himself have to remember that he is still a 21 year old young man, so signs of immaturity will occaisionally show up. Just give him some time to grow up.
Joe, stop with all of the amazing 4th quarter garbage as we all know those were just garbage time yards. Give it a rest already

  13. BucFanForever Says:

Fire Lovie NOW, before he ruins Jameis.

You can’t put too many points on the board, and you can’t be too amped up.

  14. LargoSamIM Says:

This might explain why Jameis was way off (mostly high) with his passes in the first half (when the game mattered). I can buy that, and i agree that as he gets older, this will probably not be a factor.

    but….

“Joe, stop with all of the amazing 4th quarter garbage as we all know those were just garbage time yards. Give it a rest already”

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Fire Lovie now before he ruins Jameis!!! LMAO He’s such a horrible ooach he needs to be fired, but he is such an effective coach he has the abliity to destroy a franchise QB.

The freaking HC is one spot on the team! You guys think that job and Lovie in particular have far more power to influence the outcome that is real.

When we started this season we just hoped we’d find the corpos of a team…we didn’t really(at least many didn’t really) beiieve we could be as good as we became. The problem was that while we flashed potential we had no depth. It takes a while for even the good teams to build enough depth to compete to the end.

At least we’re getting closee..another great draft and we’re on our way.

  16. JonBuc Says:

Winston has way too much passion and will to win for Low-T Smith and his limp chimp posse. Winning a couple of games a year by a field goal while talking about next year’s high draft pick is more than enough…

  17. cmurda Says:

Jameis emotions aren’t the problem. The lack of emotion and energy from the rest of the team is.

  18. Howard Cosell Says:

The Bucs have 9 days off, and they’re angry (at least I hope they’re angry).
Maybe we can go out with two wins? Winston will be calling for 24-hour a day practices. ASJ will be pissed because it cuts into his clubbin’ time.

  19. San Francisco Joe Says:

Good post Joe. It is true that Jameis is still a rookie but emotions and being able to stay cool under pressure are extremely important. Something to monitor at the very least: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzAUPMLsfyc

  20. LargoBuc Says:

Keenum shouldve been a marked man after the way they tried Jameis. Looks like Jameis, Evans and Asj are the only guys with pair on this team. Im sure Kwon would be laying down the law on defense had he been in the game.

  21. godzilla13 Says:

Obviously the players are not listening to Jameis’s pre-game speech. Who is getting in Winston’s face when he overthrows his receivers or throws an INT? How would you feel if a 21 year old was telling you how to perform when he himself has plenty of issues? “Fair to say Jameis and some others were a little bit more emotional.” If that was just a “little bit” of emotion from Jameis, I would hate to see what is a lot of emotion? He was borderline out of control. All I am trying to say is that IMO Winston is losing his teammates respect, not gaining it.

  22. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Jameis did have a overthrows that may have happened bcuz he was so amped up. But I’d argue that still could’ve had a great first half if our transducers would catch the damn ball, so we can get in a rhythm sooner in the game. I feel like the main difference in the 2nd was that our receivers were actually catching balls that are supposed to be caught. Jameis is the real deal and has to stay hyped up for the rest of the team. He can still get in the zone and make nice throws while he’s amped up, but our WR’s need to be ready for the velocity on the throws.

  23. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

    Stupid auto correct…..

  24. JaMarcus Leafwhich Says:

Godzilla you are right on. He has lost the respect if his team which is why they play the way they did. He single handedly killed our confidence. Captain overthrow is way too hyped and I’m not talking emotions. He’s a false prophet.

  25. Christina Says:

I agree with the first guy I would take Winstons “fire” over Freeman or any of the rest of the duds with no personality or passion that we’ve had before him. Leave him alone soul crushing media lol

  26. Christina Says:

    Haha Cmurda u nailed it!

  27. grafikdetail Says:

bull!! if the damn line would have blocked better or if Koetter would’ve dialed up some quick passes to negate their rush Winston would’ve started out a lot better…i give him props just for avoiding being sacked 10 times that game

  28. grafikdetail Says:

now the winston haters are coming out the sewers again LOL he played well enough to make a comeback win if not for dropped TDs passes, TD costing penalties, bad defense, & special teams play… winton is gonna finish the season as one of the best rookies ever… top 5 for yardage, QB rating, and TDs and has 3 or 4 game winning drives! he’s not hurting this team one damn bit…

  29. HIRE JIMBO Says:

FIRE LOVIE NOW. IF WE DON’T WE ARE WASTING JAMEIS TALENT AND WILL SET THE FRANCHISE BACK EVEN FURTHER! !!!!!!!!!!

  30. grafikdetail Says:

just gonna sit this right here: “much of the way people read these external displays of emotion has everything to do with how they view Winston as a player and person, and very little to do with the effect those emotional displays actually have. I have yet to see someone call Drew Brees a “thug” for his pre-game speeches, and those same folks will regularly criticize players like Jay Cutler, Joe Flacco and Eli Manning for not engaging in emotional displays.”

  31. Brandon Says:

Youngest team in the league, by far, playing on a short week, on the road, I’m not worried, this is a team on the rise. With 10 days rest, this team should come back ready to roll agasint Chicago, if we lose at home then I’ll be worried.

  32. Buc Em Says:

The Winston hate in regards to his fire and passion is unwarranted. Let’s not act like Winston isn’t a huge part of why we have tripled our win total. These players believe in Winston, whoever said he has lost the team because of his fire is out of their minds. So I guess we would prefer sheepish Josh Freeman who’s press conferences were used as sleep therapy.

This guy is a natural winner, it’s all he knows and all he cares about. I loved him giving the special teams an earful.. had they done their jobs the outcome of the game may have been different. But when you have multiple players in position to tackle the returner and he squirms down to the 2 yard line that is absolutely a lack of heart. Winston wants to win and I’m sure he would be the first to tell you he could play better.. he expects the same fight out of his troops and he sees it as his responsibility to hold them accountable. Do we criticize Tom Brady when he spits in his players faces for mistakes? No we praise him for his fire. Why should Winston be any different? Because he’s 21 fresh out of college? He sat back in the shadows the first few weeks and realized that he has the aptitude to be a leader on this team and to motivate guys.

If you think his rants are hurting his team then you have no idea what it takes to be an ultimate competitor. This guy has a gift to galvinize those around him let’s not ostrecize him for it.

Btw, who does he have to throw to? Mike Evans, Mike Evans, Sefarian who folds like a lawn chair when pressured to preform, Adam Humphries and Dontea “No Hands” Dye.

  33. loggedontosay Says:

    Joe,

Why not do an article on why Gerald McCoy is such a great player? I have watched every Buc game this year as I do every year and i do not get it–especially after watching Aaron Donald on Thursday night. Donald did not have any sacks but he did effect the game. Maybe you can explain how big bubba effects the game for the Bucs. I get the no pressure on the QB part, but what else is there?

  34. J Says:

Joe, the Rams sat on the lead. Jameis got his quarter in garbage time. He was awful when the game was in hand.

  35. James Walker Says:

If they do fire Lovie, bring in Gene Chizik as the DC. He KNOWS the Tampa-2.

  36. BucFan20 Says:

Jameis has never been in this loser situation . And the ONLY hope he has as a Buc is himself and crossed fingers.

  37. Joe Says:

Why not do an article on why Gerald McCoy is such a great player?

GMC is not a great player. He is a good player. Joe has written so many times he doesn’t get why that has become such a horrible thing.

  38. Delson Says:

“Joe, and most other Bucs fans, enjoy Jameis’ fire and emotion. But there’s a big difference between passion and getting so worked up you are not executing properly.”

Jameis got worked BADLY! Jameis was forcing throws into coverage where guys weren’t open for alot of passes in the 4th quarter. I dont blame him though he wanted to win. His teammates talent level are not what he’s used to. Dye and humphries cant replace jackson no matter how many times u multiply their abilities. Humphries I believe can be a solid slot wr in the future. It takes perserverence and balls to play as a smaller wr and i think he’s revealing that side of himself this year. Dye is no more than a tackling dummy he should not have made it over rannel hall. Sure hall had drops but given time i think he could have overcame that nervousness like humphries has. I seen his college tapes and i was impressed with his ability to out jump n secure catches in traffic. Licht should’ve looked harder in free agency for wr backups. Our oline just got beat by the best dline in the nfl. But i blame the refs for not calling a fair game. It was f**kin bull$*it. So many helmet to helmet hits. Jameis was getting pushed around between plays. 2 of the dline guys from the rams were facemask to facemask with jameis walking and talking s**t for about 15 yards but not one ref threw a flag for their excessive behavior. I hate that we dont get respect from the media but absolutely from the depths of my soul hate that we arent respected by the referees. We no doubtedly should have won with extended drives. Jameis played well given the circumstances. Our wrs are not on par of a real nfl recieving corp. The refs killed our oline. Dye’s fumble was an experience he wont ever forget. Asj now knows he needs to chill out but is he mature enough yet to do it? He knew prior to being penalized but still made a poor decision. Our defense.. Frazier needs to hang it up. Lovie may be a better dc than a hc. But i have not heard of a coaching demotion since ever.. Banks n verner need to start. Lovie sad to say has to go. Koetter should stay at oc dont mess up our offense with hopes he can handle hc duties. Maybe rex ryan can turn david into a beast again. In the nfl defenses cant survive without an effective blitz Lovie smith proves that with all these backup qbs doin big numbers on us.

  39. Winston4prez Says:

Jameis was hella off target in the first half. I must admit.. But can he please get some help!!! Will anyone else on the team get amped?? He has to compensate for the lackluster emotions from 21 other players. The nfl cannot be compared to college, but it’s relevant to say how many games I have watched him energize a team and orchestrate a 4th quarter comeback. Unlike college, he can’t do it alone. He was touched on way too many plays.

  40. LargoBuc Says:

Dont the Panthers, 3x straight division champs and 13-0, survive without a ton of blitzes? How about the reinging nfc champ for two years, the Seahaks?

  41. godzilla13 Says:

I am tired of the “spin” being put on Winston’s 363 yard, 2 TD performance Thursday night. Winston was just 1-5 passing in the 1st quarter and ended up 6-6 (50%) in the first half, when it mattered. The score was 14-3 Rams after the start of the second and St Louis never looked back. “Lovie’s point is reinforced by the fact Jameis had an amazing fourth quarterback that damned near got the Bucs back in the game”. Fourth quarterback? The comeback ended with Winston’s INT by Trumaine Johnson 5:08 to go. Winston’s last score was with 1:39 left in the game. Hardly enough time to stop the Rams offense, let alone score another TD and complete a two point conversion. Lets not forget Winston’s fumble late in the 3rd recovered by the Rams. It was a horrible game all the way around. Including Winston.

  42. Delson Says:

@largo thats true but they also have 2 press corners with great awareness. Banks could be one press corner but what about the other side? Panthers n seahawks have imo 2 of the best front 7s in the nfl. Mccoy used to be my favorite player on tb but the guy cant fight off a block. Wasted pay check.

  43. Mike10 Says:

This has been one of the more rediculous headlines coming out of that game. The guy was a bit amped up, and sailed a few passes. But was not the reason we lost that game, and if anything it was that passion that was the only passion coming from anyone in red. Any other Buc team would have laid down after coming out so flat.

Nice to know someone out there cares (cough cough Lovie, ASJ, Evans, McCoy)

  44. Mike10 Says:

Some good points there tho Godzilla. I agree. But taking it a step further, I don’t think it had anything to do w being too jacked up. He has made a lot of those same mistakes all year. He has a really bad deep ball, and he continues to miss high on receivers.
