Koetter: Jimbo Fisher Was Right

December 2nd, 2015

Bucs OC Dirk Koetter didn’t immediately believe FSU coach Jimbo Fisher when researching Jameis last winter.

Last week Joe noted how theMMQB.com detailed the Bucs’ pre-draft research into America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

In the article, Jameis’ coach at Florida State, Jimbo Fisher, described the meetings he had with Bucs’ offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Among the revelations was Koetter asked about Jameis’ football IQ, and Jimbo responded, “This will be a very short conversation.”

Well, apparently it wasn’t long enough for Koetter. Today, Koetter talked about Jameis’ development and raved about Jameis’ intelligence and apparent photographic football memory.

“Oh, yeah!” Koetter exclaimed, rolling his eyes when asked if Jameis had a quick recall. “Very quickly.” Koetter then recounted the same meeting with Fisher referenced above. In short, Koetter came away initially unmoved by Fisher’s backing of Jameis.

“That is one of the things Jimbo Fisher told me, ‘You will be amazed at this guy.’ And I was thinking to myself, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve heard this before.’

“Jameis, he is unbelievable how he can look at a gameplan take it out on the field and in just a walk-through [have it mastered] — it really is impressive. That is one thing that has amazed me and I’m not easily amazed. That has really amazed me about how fast [Jameis] can pick things up.

“It’s not just lip service. [Jameis] talks about learning and getting better. He is really into it. And he is a fast learner.”

When Koetter was asked if he was surprised by how quickly Jameis learns and has developed as an NFL quarterback, even from his mistakes, Koetter said “surprised” is not the right word, but the correct term would be “happy.”

Indeed.

How about pleasantly surprised. 87 was not like Jimbo…he had plenty to say about Fameis on JBF and kept raving and raving and raving. It was soooo over the top that it began to sound like FSU homerism. But as I told 87 long ago in a post he was absolutely spot on!!!!

I thought he was the next JaMarcus Russell or so some of the posters said.

Just the fact that Jameis has been able to play through all the criticism fires me up.
How many 20 or 21 year olds are there that could hold up under that kind of pressure? I’m very excited about the future of this team.

@Luther…shame on you man, shame on you.

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

If he doesn’t improve his accuracy, he is the next Matt Stafford or Jay Cutler. A lot dumber guys than him have won Super Bowls.

  6. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

I agree that all of 87’s pre-draft banter was spot on.

  7. FanOfBucs Says:

Jameis is a CHAMPION. And he’s ours 😀

  8. James Walker Says:

Bucs need 2 more defensive drafts and have some luck with UFAs before we can expect a playoff run.

Seems like pretty much all the doubters (and even most of the haters who were brave enough to stick around and not change their screen name here) are now “believers”. That didn’t take long did it? What – 1/2 of a rookie season or so…

’87 wasn’t the only one “bantering” about Winston’s attributes on here. I remember having multiple back and forths with SPBF and Erik (and many others) about Jameis pre draft. The former was a “doubter” and the later was a definite “hater” of Jaboo at that time. Glad to see you guys coming around…

Fwiw I never doubted for a second that he was the right choice. ’87 was the most vocal but anyone who did the research should have known he was the only real choice. Glad to see Erik admit he was wrong. Some of the others have simply gone away. At least Erik has the balls to admit he was being a moron.

    @Pickgrin and TDTampaBay

Yes I recall you two were also ardent supporters. But I believe 87 was even ready to surrender a testicle if it would have gotten us Fameis. He was a madman! LMAO

Don’t leave Broy out of that. Praised him all summer. And before we even drafted Evans

  13. MTM Says:

The quarterback position is no longer the Bucs biggest concern. The pass drops, the lack of any pass rush and a secondary that cannot consistently cover are much bigger issues at this point. Two out the three issues fall squarely of Smith’s shoulders. Disappointing and discouraging….
