“Never Heard Of Him Until I Got Here”
December 2nd, 2015Sadly, Joe is old enough to remember former Bucs quarterback Doug Williams wearing orange for Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship game and later winning a Super Bowl with the Redskins.
But most Bucs players aren’t really familiar with the man going into the Ring of Honor on Sunday.
Today, Joe asked 22-year-old Mike Evans if he ever heard of Williams growing up, and Evans said, “I never heard of him until I got here.”
Other Bucs had the same response, though America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, long has been an admirer of Williams, and the two are friends.
Another Buccaneer actually is very close with Williams and has been for years. Joe will write that touching story later today.

Pure ignorance, no sense of history for the sport you are playing, sad, very sad….like I said before, this cat is making it very easy not to like him……
Doug is a huge guy in history of the league, first African-American QB to win a Super Bowl…….shame on Mike Evans, shame on him….
Probably doesn’t know who the Lombardi Trophy is named for…..

Evans is young, no big deal that he has not heard of Doug Williams. Appreciation of past players comes with age. He will be impressed when he meets Doug.

What a non-story, a lot of young athletes have no clue about the legends of the game because they were too busy training and playing, trying to get to the pros themselves, no time to spend time sat around watching recent ‘legends’ let alone old time stuff with 2nd rate stars like Williams. It’s not the 1st time I’ve read about young players not knowing about star players until they join the league.

“A people cannot know where they are going unless they know where they have come from……”
It’s an important tenant of education and it is an even stronger tenant with African-American educators……
Do you think there are any young baseball players who don’t know who Jackie Robinson was??

Why in the hell does it matter? I’m not a big fan of Mr. Dropsy either, but who the hell cares if he knows who a QB is who won a Super Bowl 6-7 years before he was born? He’s a player, not a writer, probably not even that much of a fan. As long as he can help the team, I’m happy. Pretty bad you don’t like a guy because he isn’t an NFL historian.

@Brandon:
Oh there is a LONG list of reasons to dislike Mike Evans and they grow with each game, if you check my past posts but I will re-summarize for you.
1. Drops game-winning passes.
2. Constantly complains to officials, wanting pass interference on every play he tries to make.
3. Commits offensive pass interference on most of his catches (per Tony Dungy).
4. Makes excuses why he can’t catch a wet football.
5. Bad hamstrings.
6. Drops plenty other balls besides potential game winners.
There are more but I don’t have any more time to waste on you.
All, no matter how young or old, should have a sense of who paved the way for them.

I would be surprised if he knew who brad johnson was considering we won the super bowl when he was 8.

Don’t bother learning NFL history until after you learn to catch kid.
He seems very immature to me. Does it seem like he is often blaming others for mistakes?

Most of us Bucs fans know and respect Doug Williams. But seriously let’s be honest, not very many non-Buccaneeer and non-Redskins fans know him. It’s not like he’s some hall of fame QB. Personally I think Mike should have just lied, but you can’t blame him for not knowing him. It’s not like he was a Buc fan growing up.
