Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck talks about the Bucs’ defense.
Interesting takes from a savvy veteran quarterback coming from Lucas Oil Stadium in chilly, gloomy Indianapolis.
From the words of Colts 40-year old, bald quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, discipline is way overrated.
When asked why the Colts didn’t have success on offense in the first half like they did the second half, Hasselbeck hinted that he needed to play with more reckless abandon.
“I was probably just playing a little too careful,” Hasselbeck said of the first half. “I think I was probably a little too safe with the ball … which really is a silly thing to say.”
Hasselbeck later hinted the Bucs were so intent to stop the run, that they were sort of tipping themselves off and putting themselves in a pinch as far as pass coverage. This led the Colts to run play-action passes, which the defense bit on.
“Displace them a little bit with just a little bit of play-action fake because [the Bucs] defense really is predicated on eyes in the backfield,” Hasselbeck said. “It is what they are really good at: ‘If we can get the inside backers with their eyes in the backfield we can get them on play-action.'”
Hasselbeck also noted in the second half the Colts’ offense was more aggressive because with the firepower the Bucs have at offensive skill positions, Hasselbeck said the Colts knew they needed touchdowns and not field goals.

Hasselbeck figured out Lovies scheme in 30 minutes… I figured it out in 15 minutes:
1) Rush 4 underperforming DLinemen
2) Give Hasselbeck enough time to scan
3) Let your over agressive LBs create gaps in the center
4) Leave it all up to your 5th/6th string CBs to try and tackle the WRs after they catch a 15yard post

This wasn’t rocket science out there today. We ran the ball well on Indy the first half and didn’t cash in with enough points.
The Colts never ran the ball well. They adjusted at halftime and dared us to throw it.
Both teams forced the other’s QB to beat them. The more experienced Vet was the one with the hot hand…the rookie played like a rookie today. But clearly #3 is getting better and learning new lessons every week. This one was painful.

Wonder whose schemes he figured out in the past three games all wins…this was his 4th in a row. Oh that’s right he figured out Dan Quinn who the Lovie haters wished we had hired in Tampa.
Hasselbeck has been figuring out schemes for more than 16 years ten of them as a starter.
Starting the second half with two straight three and outs and surrendering great field position certainly helped the cause. The offense simply did not show up in the 2nd half. As Joe pointed out in an earlier thread the OL did not play as well in the second half and it seemed as if the blitzing and moving of players had them confused.
BTW Hasselbeck was under pressure. He had 3 sacks for six yards…#3 had five for 33 yards but at least two of those were #3 having FSU flashbacks before he learned the hard way that the NFL is not the NCAA. Throw the ball away. Hasselbeck did…but 17 years in the league will do that for you.

And a big part of those 3& outs came from penalites… (This is on the HC) But Koetter taking 22 out of the gameplan was fckuin mental… So I put this on both Koetter & Lovie…. The only difference, Koetter called one bad game… Where Lovie has been out schemed over and fckin over again… Unwilling to adjust… be more aggressive on the passer…
Koetter went too agressive… Lovie just went too Lovie.

Haselbeck could start for a lotta teams. He is arguably the NFl’s best backup.
I knew we would have problems with him. He got the ball out extra quick with accuracy. And we needed to play..last wks game in order to win. That did not happen. Give there Defense credit. They hurried jameis on a lot of his throws.
We got beat by a better team. When you go into another teams home turf, you gotta play..lights out. We did not. As for playoffs fellow fans? Don’t get your hopes up to high. Our team will continue to play..up and down. Next year will be our year. 8-8 is about where we will finish. Be patient guys. It takes time. We are comin along just fine.

Agreed. Just off the top of my head, I can think of 5 or 6 utterly disgusting calls that went against us. I can also point out half a dozen infractions that I saw them commit that drew no flags. Severely unbalanced game called by the refs. I saw at least 3 hold on Jack Smith that should have been called, he was tackled on one of them. And heres the kicker, on all those holds agai st Smith, Hasselbeck had a big completion. Makes me sick.

How can you be penalized for “Leaping” when there is not a single teammate within 3-4 feet of you?

I just want to say that nfl integrity of the game sucks. These referees do not know what is a holding or fumble. Too make it worst they take 15 mins to review and still get it wrong. Everyone talk about spy gate or deflate gate. What about REF GATE

There needs to be some kind of referee boot camp in the offseason. These referee’s are (As Charles Barkley would say) “Turrible”
