Bucs OC Dirk Koetter prefers talent over height.
When the Bucs drafted wide receiver Mike Evans and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins with their first two picks last year, AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht quipped that the Bucs, along with Vincent Jackson, had a front line that could rival the height of college basketball squads.
Licht then coined the term “Dunkaneers” for the receiving trio.
The Bucs were to heave the ball to the heavens from Stewart McClown and expected it to be plucked out of the air against smaller defenders.
Like a lot of things last year, the plan sounded cool but never worked out.
With ASJ down for who knows how long and Jackson battling to return from a knee ligament injury today, per BSPN, that’s two of the Dunkaneers missing for the past three games. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was asked this week how much that hurts his offense, and in an ode to the basketball references of the Dunkaneers, had a sarcastic yet beautiful response.
“It takes away our pick-and-roll game, it takes away our alley-oops,” Koetter deadpanned. “We’re going to have to start going four corners with all those little guys out there.
“Take the height out of it, we’re down some good players. Tall guys, skinny guys, whatever they are you want your best players out there and we’re down two really good players. The height thing, in my opinion, is a little too overblown. I want good players, first, and if they are good and tall that’s a benefit.”
As Koetter noted, a player doesn’t have to be 6-5 to be a good receiver. But it sure is nice.

The only thing that is overblown is the AC/DC references. Should be showing pictures of lazy dogs lounging on incompetent Lovie Smith’s lap instead.

Well when one of your dunkaneers is dropping 40% of his passes, the other can’t even get on the damn field, and the other is sadly reaching the end of his career….it’s time to just find the guys who can get open and catch the damn ball ( Adam Humphries) . I think Kenny Bell will replace Vjax next year. I would actually move Vjax to the slot next year and put bell on the outside vs evans is ajax does stay but I think Bell will turn into a big part of our offense. We need speed in space playmakers to make the defense play honest and create first downs. The run game and deep ball will benefit from that. Glad to see our O-line picks were good moves.

Was there ever a beginning of the Duckaneers? I am starting to think the whole ASJ thing is more of a disciplinary issue than it is injury? Has this been looked into?

haha…Meyers better than ASJ. Meyers is on the field more…that’s it. I play lots of chess too by the way.

If Myers is better than ASJ……where has he been the last few weeks…..1 or 2 catches?
