Red Zone Struggles
November 11th, 2015Had the Bucs converted their red zone opportunities on offense last Sunday against the Giants, they likely would have won.
(Yeah, yeah, Joe gets it. If his grandmother had… )
The Giants game was just a window into the struggles of the red zone offense. Currently, the Bucs are No. 28 in the NFL in scoring a touchdown in the red zone.
Speaking today in his weekly press conference, America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, said blame him for the red zone woes.
When asked about the offense’s red zone struggles, Jameis quickly stated it is not the offense’s fault, but his.
“Not the team. That is something I have to get better at to help us out,” Jameis said. “I believe I have been getting better every week. But definitely my eye-progression and things I see in the red zone and how quick I have to get the receivers the ball, is different [in the red zone]. It is something an aspect of my game, I have to get better at.”
Winston admitted one thing he has learned about red zone offense in the NFL is that the plays have to be executed in a lightning-speed fashion. Also, he has to go with his first read because of the speed; don’t rely so much on going through progressions as the speed of the defense will close openings in such a hurry.
Jameis added this is currently his biggest goal, to improve red zone efficiency.
Previously, his goals were to convert third downs. Mission accomplished. his second goal was to cut down on turnovers. Mission accomplished.
Next goal: more touchdowns in the red zone.

next goal – SB ring!
I trust that Licht’s scouts are actively (as in right now) studying tape on the top defensive DE’s and CB’s and will bring home some studs in April.
For the first time, probably ever, I have confidence in our GM and scouts – and know that we have our Franchise QB! Our Oline looks surprisingly solid and our receivers and back, when healthy, are damn good. Now go get us a D!!!! And if we need a new DC or head coach – then go get that too!!

I think jameis will start to cash in down in the red zone…like joe said…”his goals were to convert third downs. Mission accomplished. his second goal was to cut down on turnovers. Mission accomplished.”..if players start to catch the ball and help him out we will be fine…GO BUCS!!!

I’m not the least worried about Jameis getting better in the red zone. He will figure it out. Although there have been better rookie QB’s in the past, Jameis is doing well and his learning curve is coming along just great. We should be 6-2 or 5-3 right now. If we only had a Defense. Once we do though we are going to be pure hell. We are on track to win 6 games. Lets start with the Dallas Cowgirls. I can’t stand Dallas.

The red zone problems are due to the offensive line. They need to be able to hold longer while the defensive backs break down which leads to open windows in the end zone. The offensive line is solid because Jameis Winston is making reads faster and better and getting rid of the ball quickly. If Jameis Winston improves in the red zone that will be amazing because his offensive line has not caught up to him yet. No rookie has been asked to do what Jameis Winston is doing. The Bucs have big receivers that pull the field; they a fast and quick receiver to stretch the field.

They should make Humphries the first read on some “&Goal” plays. Use his quickness. I’d also like to see the fade to Evans used before 3rd down. Winston has been accurate on rollout plays, too. Go to his strengths in the red zone.

When it’s first and goal from the ten or less…I wish we’d roll Jameis out…it not only buys him some more time to read the D…the D then has to account for “Air Winston”. If they lay back and blanket the receivers #3 runs it. Accounting for #3’s running ability, especially inside the ten, made the D honest and opens the field up for us.
The threat of the roll would also provide more running room inside for Martin.

There’s your team leader – taking all the heat for poor Red Zone production. Can he improve? absolutely. And he will. But some help from his teammates is majorly in order. Our receivers have GOT to start catching the ball more consistently.
He’s only played 8 NFL games – yet already looks like he’s right there with the top tier QBs IMO. A true star in the making. Jameis has played very well the last 4 games. He needs some help though. Especially from the Defense.
