Trent Dilfer Talks Jameis
November 11th, 2015FOX broadcast cameras caught America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, doing something unique that didn’t surprise Trent Dilfer.
Late in Sunday’s game, defensive tackle Akeem Spence was pulled after a terrible personal foul that all but cemented the loss, and Bucs coach Lovie Smith briefly chewed him out.
Jameis headed right to Spence to counsel him. Feedback Joe got was similar to the reaction when Jameis led an emotional pregame speech before the Dixie Chicks game. In so many words, “Wow, a rookie tried to calm down a hot teammate and get his head back in the game.”
The move didn’t surprise Dilfer, the former Bucs quarterback who is now a BSPN talking head and operator of a popular quarterback academy for top high school football prospects. Dilfer has known Jameis for years and is a mentor of Jameis.
What Dilfer saw of Jameis in Atlanta and on the sidelines Sunday with Spence, is the same Jameis he knows so well, so he told Ron Diaz and Ian Beckles of WDAE-AM 620 yesterday.
“The thing I am most impressed with about Jameis is his no-flinch mentality,” Dilfer said. “He hasn’t flinched from the beginning. He has embraced the bigness of the [Bucs] job. He has improved. He hasn’t thrown an interception in 113 straight attempts, I think it is. Which is remarkable for a rookie. Doesn’t get flustered with Mike Evans not catching the ball on Sunday. His leadership and his dynamic personality, it is infectious. I think he will be a future star.
“He is always going to bring energy to a room because that is his personality. I think Jameis will have a massive impact to that organization. He did that in high school. He did that at Florida State and he will do the same in the pros.”
Joe has written this previous. Though Joe never met Magic Johnson, the basketball legend sounds exactly like Jameis. When Johnson was a player, teammates fed off of his energy and his passion and his bubbly personality and his intelligence. Joe remembers hearing Bobby Knight tell a story about Johnson that today sounds word for word like Jameis.
And like Johnson, Jameis is always wearing that perpetual smile on his face. That is, when he’s not in the heat of battle.

Everyone is shocked or surprised by what he has done so far. This kid won a heisman and national championship facing a 25yr life sentence. During that time the world hated him and didnt even give him a chance . Any fsu fan like myself has seen this for a few tears now . To the lizards fans and the rest you have not seen nothing yet . what you are watching is a kids natural gifts and personality combine which will never change . This kid will change not only the bucs but the whole tampa bay area . Right now we are talking about a kid that knows nothing. Wait until he becomes a man and everything slows down for him . I dont want to say we should be thankful but we VERY EXCITED!!!!

It didn’t surprise former Dilfer. Is that the artist formerly known as Dilfer?

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I saw the same thing during the Oregon game. The cameras caught Wilson, after that last fumble, walking to the sideline, head down and depressed. The ONLY teammate who came to pick him up was Jameis. I knew, right then, that I wanted this kid to lead the bucs.

I heard the interview yesterday and one thing that sticks out for me, because both Trent and Ian REALLY EMPHASIZED it. They are both tired of the term “leadership” tossed around.
Dilfer explained that the proper word to describe what the great QB’s bring to an entire organization is ENERGY!!! Great players don’t get down and don’t allow their teams or organizations to drop their chins. Fameis clearly is the battery we’ve needed to jump start this entire organization.
The team has plenty of leaders..many mentioned only in passing..like McDonald.
We always talk about GMC and rarely mention McDonald’s contribution. I think that is what Ian and Trent were trying to say. The team has leaders but Fameis is the energy source that the team has desperately needed.

The comparison to Magic is right on. He lives nearby and my wife and I have run in to him on occasion at the theater, always with his kids in tow. He’s, pure, walking charisma and light’s up the room with his smile.
We can only hope JW’s charisma will translate as well on the field and he can lift up the rest of his Buccaneer teammates to perform at a higher level as Magic did with his running mates.

I’ve never felt this optimistic about a Bucs player, and i was a freeman believer after his great year. James has that “IT” factor to him. You feel it watching him play on Sundays. I believe James will be a Tampa legend when his career is over. He might have a street named after him.

Jameis “Magic” Winston

I liked that Trent Delfer compared Jameis Winston to Ben Roethlisberger. Both are physical guys. Jameis will refine his skills as his career goes on. I can only imagine the player he will be next year and the year after. One thing that blows me away is that he has not punched Mike Evans in the face. Evans has cost Winston deary in not only the stat column but in the W as well. Winston has kept his poise because even he knows this will pass with Evans. He didn’t drop passes in college or his first year as a pro.

ITSASHAME .. Jameis effort is a little wasted by our lack of a bonafide defense. WE should be at least..5-3 by now. We are on target for 6 wins. I just pray it starts with the..Dallas CowGirls!! Lovie gets one more season to bring the D around. If not? He’s fishing off of the St Pete Bridge with Greg Schiano telling football war stories.
