Gerald McCoy Anchors NFC Best Run Defense

No NFC team does a better job when its opponent hands off than your beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That’s right, folks.
Teams average just 3.7 yards per carry against Tampa Bay. That includes the heralded fronts of the Panthers, Seahawks and Rams.
What does that say about the Bucs’ front-7? Chew on that over your afternoon sandwich and Tums.
The data can be argued in all kinds of directions, but the facts are the facts. What’s also a fact is opposing quarterbacks complete 70.2 percent of passes against the Bucs. And that’s why Tampa Bay allows far too many points.

total BS ranking and totally misleading. It’s so damn easy to pass on Lovie’s defense the running stat is skewed and meaningless. The only 2 stats that matter are Wins and Losses and Points allowed….

I have witnessed McCoy at his best and he rates nothing less than a beast, when he is playing up to his ability. However, I fail to see how he ranks the title of this post Joe… Anchors??? Come on? Gerald is ailing in performance. The front seven anchor secured ONE tackle yesterday, when the Giants ran the ball twenty times! Do the math!

Why would you run when the quick slant (just like a handoff in todays nfl) is always available? Kwon and LVD are so run focused they rarely drop into the passing lane quickly enough. One of the knocks on the Dungy defense was that we gave up plays in the run game, but the line backers managed to get their share of takeaways. I don’t know, think I’d rather give up another .5 yard per carry than 10% more passes completed. Combine the fact that they give up 7.1 yard per pass attempt, (17th) A better stat, I think is how many first downs are you giving up. We don’t look as good there.
Just another stat, Who is the #1 team in the NFL in this category????

We do stop the run…..that’s a fact…..but forcing the opponent to throw exposes our greatest weakness…….short/medium passes over the middle.
When linebackers bite on play action…that’s when we get beat.
We are able to stop the run because we bite.
This is a matter of instincts….in particular with MLB…..and he is a rookie & will learn.
We need to jam more recievers on the line…..that will slow down some of the quick slants.

This post is dead on accurate, you rancid haters. However, run stuffing D-tackles earn five times less per year than McCoy. And that’s where the problem is.

By the way, on the first down thing, the Bucs are 31st in first downs per play. Not sure thats too good.

It was the same under Schiano, stop the run and get killed with the past. Leonard Johnson 1-on-1 against Megatron, Steve Smith, Roddie White (when he was still good), and so. Stopping the run is great, but when you can’t get a hand on the QB, that a serious problem.

Definitely misleading. Opposing teams attempt to run on the Bucs with not much success, I will agree with that. However, since it is so easy to pass on the Bucs opposing teams abandoned the run a lot quicker which equal less attempts.

It’s a lot like Schiano selling out to stop the run. Offenses just passed because they could do it easily. Same thing here. If we don’t let them run then fine, they’ll just pass and do it effectively.

I hestitate to give specific %’s…I’ll save that for you guys. But you’ll get the drift of my post even if you assign different %’s than me.
If a player is awesome 10% of the time..very good 40% of the time…good 30% and mediocre 10% and disappears for 10% is he great?
What % of plays need to be great to make a player great?
How many bad plays do we allow a great player to make. Nobody is perfect not even JJ Watt.
I just think GMC is beginning to wear out his welcome here. He’s larger than life off the field but seems to sometimes shrink on the field. In addition he struggles to remain healthy.
I’m not just jumping on the beat up GMC bandwagon. I simply believe it’s time to start looking at our high priced “talent” when a team underperforms…again I’m no Lovie defender but this is not ALL based on poor coaching. GMC has his share of responsibility.

I’m surprised teams don’t throw 60 times a game against this defense. Every time the other team runs I feel like they’re throwing a down away. Did you know we have allowed at least 26 completed passes in the last 3 weeks? That really, really sucks. This is very much like the 2012 defense, can stop the run but a secondary that is historically bad.

I like GMC but you maybe right a change in scenery could be what both need at this point. Not sure you can get much for him with that huge contract and the lengthy injury history but getting out from under that contract is a decent return in and of itself. I doubt they’d be able to get a first. Maybe though. draft picks are very valuable and most fans myself included over value what the trade value for a player is.

This is so clear it is not even funny. Our run d is good the same reason or pass d stinks. Our linebackers come flying up everytime a qb sticks out his arm to hand of or play fake. That’s why we stuff the run AND why the middle of the field is always open.

Fact: Giving crapp head coach lovie or someone on the defense, think about this: The bucs have faced 2 good QB’s eli and ryan, and brees was hurt, so as a defense lets sell out and stop the run and let the cousins of the world beat us and kirk cousins did and mallet did….misleading stat…bucs pass rush and secondary are on milk cartons along with GMC

I think it’s a start. Personally I’m tired of the GMC bashing. It’s obvious he’s more hurt than anyone knows. If we can get an end or 2 and had some better secondary we will be much better. We are on our way . This team was awful and it’s going to take 1 more draft and FA period. We are going to be a beast next year on both sides of the ball.

I don’t give a sh*t what we are ranked. I saw McCoy get blown off the ball yesterday on running plays. And no it wasn’t a damn double, triple or quadruple team. It was one on one. He sucked yesterday. Look at the tape.
Lavonte David missed a bunch of tackles and was getting run over all damn day. Lavonte also sucked yesterday. I hate to say this but they have sucked for the most part of this year. I’m sick of the excuses.

Everything is relative…..we expect more out of GMC because he was a #1 pick and his big contract….
I am certain he is hurt…..he has proven he can play at a high level and that’s what we expect every time he hits the field.
I suspect he will return to the player he once was as soon as he is healthy.

you rule sir… I just read McCoy is already starting the damage control for his tantrum. Funny part is I thought everyone was worried about Jameis being able to handle money and pressure. I have always been a Jameis guy but even I am blown away by his leadership and growth. We just need to get him some weapons and a more aggressive defense which will require a coaching change since Lovie has proven he can not get the best out of the talent he has to work with.

as for lovie’s use of timeouts, I wish someone in media would question him on
this. If his goal is to disrupt flow of game on both sides of ball he has been successful.I watched a DE drawing a bead on QB when lovie called one of his untimely last minute timeouts. Calling a timout to kill a play and the surprise and telegraphing the play on fourth and one.Come on let em play.
