Joe’s trained reporter eye looks for all the details.
And Joe finds this one telling from yesterday’s victorious locker room scene.
After the moving and brief ceremony led by Logan Mankins to present a game ball to Kwon Alexander, Lovie is passionately addressing the club when Mankins cuts him off. And it was intentional, Mankins even raised his hand to redirect attention his way while Lovie was speaking.
Mankins then succeeds in interrupting Lovie. Not one Buccaneer in the video seems surprised, and Mankins gets out his message of “commitment from everyone” is needed moving forward.
Is it common for players to interrupt Lovie? Do players try to tweak the head coach’s message mid-sentence like that?
Joe has no clue, but Joe does know some NFL coaches would never tolerate that kind of thing.

Interesting catch Joe, and you’re right on. After Mankins said what he said about Kwon, locker room pep talk from Lovie needed to end there. Everyone was already ‘in the moment’ and anything else to the team as a whole said risks detracting from that. As a captain and team leader, Logan recognized that I’d expect. Lovie apparently didn’t.

I caught it. Logan is a man. Lovie is a man. Lovie cut Logan off before he finished what he had to say. If Lovie is going to call on Logan to make a speech then he should let him finish it. I guarantee to a man neither had an issue with each other. They would be understanding that they just got a victory and that was an emotional situation. Lovie was the one who called on mankins to talk in the first place. Say what you will about his game managment, player evaluation, or scheming where criticism is warranted. But creating a story about this seems like a reach.. Im sure it will get a chuckle out of some folks though.

I have a thought on why the Bucs DB’s seem to be regressing. Now, first off, it can not be for lack of coaching….. it is just too obvious that the group is not performing. Perhaps, its just the opposite….. over-coaching. It’s a pretty well accepted axiom that defensive players… seem to play better when they are loose, react, and don’t have to overthink…. t slows them down… and just a little bit of that goes a long way -especially with that position group. Unless they are continually put in the wrong coverage schemes (coaching) then I suspect that they need to stop thinking and play faster… they play like they are afraid to make a mistake ….. and that indecisiveness can be the result of overthinking…. just a thought….

The players played hard because they knew what position Lovie was in.. Win or the Fans will revolt.

WOW see my post on the thread below this one about the faces in the locker room while Lovie was giving his speech. Joe posted a pic from the locker room in his Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow section this morning and I studied all them. I don’t know what you guys saw in that pic but I saw players that simply don’t believe a word he’s saying. I posted it in the thread below this long before I even clicked on this article and read it. Now this article backs up what I saw in the picture. 3 guys looking at the floor, 1 looking at the wall and a GMC giving him an I don’t believe a word you’re saying look on his face.
See what you see in the picture. Joe’s is bigger so the picture tells a 1000 words to me and I’m VERY good at reading faces. This D has no faith in Lovie, because it’s not working and they know it. Saw the same look from Melton on the sidelines during the 4th quarter yesterday.

I don’t read much into this. Our BUCS won. And we true Fans will take it…anyway we can get it. Perhaps mankins thinks we are coming together as a ream. Maybe he sees a..rising spirit in the Bucs. Center Hawley says, We are very very close to developing something special with our Bucs. These guys been around. They know when a locker room is trying to..come together. Mankins felt moved by the effort on Sunday. And so should we. Just win Bucs. That’s all we beat up fans ask. Win..by any means necessary. Make us Buc fans really feel good on Mondays.

Bonzai…I studied the picture for about a minute and a 1/2 this morning before I clicked the article. Look at the pic on the main page. Look at the players in the background. Does that look like anyone is listening to this guy to you? There’s no stretch at all. Then 3 hours after I’m studying that picture Joe puts up this article. That’s no coincidence to me at all. Like I said it could have been an older picture after a loss so I don’t know, but that’s what I took from the pic. For all I know guys were smiling after the picture was taken.

Seems like a hate coach smith site more than a Bucs fan site. Also seems like there are a lot of folks who think they have done, could do or would do better. How about the apparent comraderie of the team after a tough loss on the road? How about the emotion and grit by our LB who just lost his brother and laid it all on the field? Those things (and more) are what I see in that picture and video. I could probably see the negative things if That’s what I was looking for in the first place. Keep it up Bucs! You’re getting better and gave at least one person joy and pride this week.

I think Mankins is asserting himself as the ALPHA DOG and team leader and maybe he sees that players are not totally listening to lovie and I thought in the past there have been player only meetings of get togethers to smooth things out and perhaps mankins was just showing that kwon is on the front lines putting it out there everyday and mankins knows that and wants kwon to always know that they are brothers whereas lovie may be gone soon

I noticed this also, but also noticed when Mankins was saying he was personally proud while talking to kwon, you hear Lovie inject himself into the convo with “we all are”, cutting off Mankins.
I don’t think there is a big power trip thing, but the entire episode showed Mankins as the real deal, heard you guys talk a little about him and his Oline leadership, but that was team yesterday.
BTW, it takes great Leadership to allow Mankins to step into that role, Lovie loses nothing by letting those guys take that and run with it. Just step aside, and let them go. That locker room looks like it belongs to Logan Mankins.

I may be reaching, but how saw this was Mankins, trying to bridge the gap between, offense to defense and trying to make this a team thing. If the defensive coordinator (head coach), gives it, not nearly as big of deal as the team captain.
Directly made a plea to all of the team to bring the level of commitment that Kwon did on every play. I say this as a moment of unity rather than divisiveness. Also, this is Mankins, fully showing his commitment to the process at Tampa.

Big fan of yours, Joe, but I also feel that this post was misleading. Your description of the event simply does not match what happened in that video. Absolutely no head coach in the NFL (or any leader for that matter)would have had an issue with what happened there. Mankins was invited to speak and he was supporting Lovie’s message. Regardless, I remain a big fan. 🙂

The Lovie trolls really are something aren’t they 87? I mean the Glennon Mob I get, young player who really hasn’t had a chance in a decent situation. Maybe he could turn out great, unlikely but there’s some potential for it to happen.
The Freemanites? I mean they had Schiano, and even if that was wrong and misguided, you could I suppose make an argument Schiano’s style messed with Freeman’s head and threw him off.
Lovie Smith just coached NFL game #167. I mean he is what he is at this point, and that’s been on display through his mostly dismal tenure here. Yet the Lovie trolls would have you believe we are blessed to have one of the top 5 coaches in the league. Tons of evidence strongly suggests otherwise. Yet onward they march.

87, I think Lovie does deserve some credit in the development of the rookie QB. I think his job is tied to the continued development of JW, and that includes the entire Offensive development. Koetter is doing a great Job, and Lovie is the HC.
I think the defense gets fixed sometime in the future, but it sure hasn’t been as fast as I thought. And the regression of players is what is baffling. This is supposed to be the most simplistic scheme to play according to past greats, but great current talent still looks lost 75% or more of the time.
Currently, I’m just suffering on through the season, and looking for anything that is improving on the D side, and appreciating the play of the Offense.
This has always been a bend don’t break defense, capitalize on mistakes, while limiting the big plays. NFL rules have changed, so that is out the window at times.
But there was improvement yesterday, and that was red zone, after the bend. The Falcons made mistakes, and the D capitalized, thank you Kwon. We just need some more play-makers.
I get pissed off also, and reserve the right to complain and call for heads anytime I want, and don’t worry about what anyone on here says, well except to play within the rules of the admin, lol.
Keep up the fire, so to speak, don’t let others affect you, they are buc fans too.

bucrightoff….correct and the first beatdown that Lovie’s D takes this season. NONE of these people will be anywhere to be found for days afterwards. They didn’t see all the fumbles and boneheaded plays that Atlanta made like you and I did. All they saw was Lovie Smith and ONELOVIE calls him a genius even. That’s how much they paid attention to the Falcons sloppiness and then the Bucs letting a 17 point lead slip away. Also letting a 24 point lead slip away the week before and the TWO blowout losses that happened last season. None of that matters ya see. Because Lovie is a genius.
When Lovie’s gone, I truly do hope they go too. The #1 reason why I didn’t even want to come here all last week was I didn’t want to get into fights with the ignorantly blind Lovie supporters. It’s one thing to root for the guy. Yah sure root for him, I do too, because that means I’m rooting for my team. BUT the over the top love for this clown after everything we’ve seen so far from this defense is just dayum astounding!
Now it’s onto well Schiano and Dom screwed this team up so much it’s going to take Lovie time. Yet they forget that only 10% of the current roster on the team is from Dom-Rah-Schiano. The whole dayum team is Lovely’s product.

And Jab…it has nothing to do with being right or wrong or being able to tell you I told you I was right. If he gets fired next week or a year from now I would have no reason to gloat. It actually sucks really. I don’t want this team to hit the reset button, scrap 50% of the roster and start all over again. That’s a recipe for disaster in most cases. In Lovie’s case it’s become apparent on too many situations. I never called for his firing last season, not one time. But I’ve seen enough to realize what the negative Nancy’s were talking about all summer long.
I was Josh Freeman’s BIGGEST supporter on this site in the summer of 2013. I told everyone that they were wrong about Freeman. This happened daily and we got into scraps left and right on here. 3 games into the season I had seen enough and wanted him benched. When you’ve seen enough, you’ve seen enough. Perhaps you haven’t reached that point yet. Perhaps you never will.

TAC….I don’t watch the defensive side of the ball anymore and that’s the truth. I literally walk out of the room. My wife calls me when the O is back on the field. Someone is actually going to have to tell me if this defense gets better, because I can’t watch that pile of dung. Not dung actually there is about 4 decent to good players on the D. LVD, GMC, Banks, and Kwon. That’s it!

I’m not going to lie, I had no faith in Lovie’s ability to develop, or better put really, to “allow” the development of a rookie QB. My concerns are no more, he is doing a great job, and I appreciate what he is doing. If you think he has nothing to do with that, then so be it, our opinions differ. Mine is he has everything to do with that, or allowing that to occur under his watch. It all matters, whether he is the HC at the future Superbowl, or not.
I’m sold on JW, and everyone there counts in his future development, all of them, including the grocery buyer, and dinner cooker Lovie Smith.

That statement implies that you are drawing some kind of conclusion that only a trained reporter would spot. I’m saying that I’ve seen all that behavior before… In locker rooms, board rooms and other team environments. There is nothing there that a coach or leader would take issue with, even though you’re drawing that conclusion at the end with your closing statement.
From what you wrote, I expected to see something much more confrontational or even disrespectful from Mankins. (I am glad that wasn’t the case.)
I think your choice of words, in this case , leads the reader astray.

COME ON MAN…the man gives us a win and most of you still aren’t satisfied…just support the team regardless of what happens…progress has been made from last year…remember last year the d didn’t start playing well until week 8..with the offense ahead of schedule we will be in good position for a 8-10 win season…heck after last year I would be happy with 6-8 wins….GO BUCS!!!

Irresponsible journalism here. I dont care what you say Joe, this is a common media trick to make a story out of nothing when you cant find anything else to talk about. This sunday was the most positive sunday Bucs fans have experienced in a while and, I imagine with your pessimistic outlook you must be very uncomfortable without having something negative to talk about, so you stirred up this nonsense, nonsense that nobody other than you is even talking about. This is pathetic Joe, and you can argue it as much as you want but we (the fans) are the reason you have a job buddy, so instead of insulting people who disagree with you like a 12 year old, how about be a man and take some constructive criticism, stop trying to find negative story lines after such an amazing game. Sir, since 2008, Joe shares what Joe finds interesting every day. You don’t have to like it. The day Joe cares about readers’ opinions is the day Joe will hang it up. Joe will not sit around and care about offending people, because every post offends someone. Joe approaches every day the same way. Joe writes about what Joe finds interesting.
