A stat Lovie Smith can’t spin.
Bucs coach Lovie Smith readily admits he likes stats. But after probing, the stats he likes seem to only make him look good.
Other stats, well, Lovie likely will try to dismiss them as some form of distortion.
Well, here is one stat that won’t allow Lovie to hide behind a tree.
You can manufacture any sort of bizarro stat with a juvenile acronym all you want. As the voice of reason, Phil Mushnick of the New York Post wrote, stats have butchered the game of football before the Dead Sea was sick. The classic example is quarterback ratings that self-serving analysts try to shove down your throat each week.
(Joe would suggest the way the numbers crowd hijacked baseball, it has nearly ruined the sport. Alas, a rant for another day.)
But the ultimate stat in football is points allowed. And in that category, depending on your point of view, the Bucs are the best, which means they are the worst. That would be (4-18) Lovie’s defense.
The Bucs are tied for first with the Bears (coincidence?) for most points allowed per game, averaging 29.8.
Joe is pretty sure Lovie would counter this news by telling folks that in truth, the Bucs are only tied for ninth-worst (best?) in total points allowed with 179. Tied with the Bears, naturally.
This, of course, only tells part of the tale.
The Bucs admit they don’t want to have their prized rookie quarterback, America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, throw 30 times a game. Fair enough.
But when your defense cannot stop a cool breeze, you are painting your rookie quarterback in a corner with little or no option.

Lovie gets out-coached every game. He doesn’t know how to adjust during halftime and it becomes predictable. He justs want players to play HIS SCHEME, when a good head coach would adjust and play to the strength of their players.
Im tired of seeing the CB’s playing 10yrds off giving the WR a free run down the field without jamming them at the line but then again Lovie has fallen into the Schiano category because he only wants his guys instead of going out and getting players that will actually help the team.

Need a CB, DE, and safety in the next draft to have a shot at fixing this defense. Probably should go defense except for a speedy slot receiver and at least one OL. They have been pretty good in the draft. Atrocious in free agency. Oh and please fire Lovie!

Interesting that you bring up the Chicago Bears Joseph!! If I am not mistaken, the Bears also had one of the worse defenses last year?? They brought in John Fox and Vic Fangio(which i’m not against! I think John Fox and Vic Fangio are great defensive minds and will eventually turn that franchise around) and whattayaknow… THE DEFENSE STILL SUCKS!! How is such a thing possible with coaches of that caliber you ask!?!?!? Do the Bears have 11 pro bowlers on defense just like us who are also just victims of bad coaching??? The answer is NO morons!! They suffer from the same problem we do!!! LACK OF TALENT!!!

I defended Lovie all of last year. I defended him early this season. At this point, he has to show me something before I can defend him anymore. I don’t expect us to be championship contenders, but what we are is regressing on defense. Guess who’s responsible for the defense? He doesn’t have Frazier to blame anymore. The offense is progressing, but I don’t see how anyone could give Lovie credit for that. He’s the one who is scared to score points before halftime. He’s the one who goes into turtle mode with a 10 point lead (in the third quarter). If anything, he is holding this offense back. He continues to try to put games on the back of his defense, and they continue to fail game in and game out. At what point is he going to learn what we all know – they aren’t a good defense. Why continue to lose because you are afraid to score points and you want to let your defense win a game? I don’t get it, and I don’t get how anyone can excuse him for what’s happened. I’ll give him more time, but I’m not going to give any more excuses.

We are “Rebuilding” ONELOVE? Did you give the previous coaches that same latitude? I sincerely doubt it.
So, what exactly is the plan? Finish with the worst record in the league every year so we get the first player in the draft? For how long? 2 years? 3 years?
We are right on your schedule then, he is doing a great job….Your genius coach also lost on purpose last year I suppose to get Jameis right?
