More evidence of a disconnect
An NFL head coach delivered an interesting nugget yesterday that reinforces what’s going on — or is part of the problem — with the Bucs. In particular, Lovie Smith’s defense.
Remember the curb-stomping at the Den of Depression by that gimmick rookie quarterback with Tennessee? Sure looked to Joe like the Bucs were a team grossly unprepared for what the Titans threw at them.
Naturally, Lovie claimed he had the right gameplan. Of course, if you believe that (it’s plausible, just not believable), then the only logical reason for the woeful effort that day is a disconnect between the coaching staff and the guys on the defensive side of the ball.
A man who doesn’t have to use the crutches of sycophants going on local radio begging fans for patience, Dixie Chicks first-year coach Dan Quinn, claims one reason his 6-1 team is able to pull out tough games is no disconnect on his squad.

Well now, this just strengthens Joe’s analysis that there is a disconnect with players and Bucs defensive coaches. Mike Jenkins even said focus and standards are lacking.
As for giving up, well, if you are too scared to score points late in the first half of games, yes, to Joe, that is essentially giving up.

You hit the nail right on the head Joe. There’s obviously a disconnect between the coaching staff and the players on defense. But I’d take it one step further than Jennings did … It’s not just lack of focus, it’s also lack of ability and lack of chemistry in the secondary. When I see CBs constantly trailing the receivers, that’s lack of ability (speed and quickness mostly). When I see guys constantly not backing each other up, that’s lack of chemistry.

Joe disconnect between coach and players is the same as quitting….. And since the players that Lovie deems not worthy of a spot on the Buc roster excel elsewhere it is obvious where the blame lies…. Please Glazers, fire Lovie yesterday! Why is he still a cancer on this once proud team?????

Maybe the worst secondary in NFL history. Only Banks would start for other teams and even then it’d be as a third corner. Nothing but backups out there masquerading as starters.

Houston just released Mallet after his pathetic performance vs were less than stellar Miami who has got well since they fired Lovie, errr Philbin (too bad the Glazers do not have the stones to fire this moron) so how about the Bucs making an example of a couple of sieves who helped contribute to the loss to a bad 4-12 DC squad….
I nominate coach O’Dea who probably signed off on Brindzda and over saw the coverage on the onside kick that put DC back int he game. Who has another nominee for immediate release?????

Lovie is an ass clown who refuses to modify his defensive scheme to compete with modern day offenses. All I want for Christmas is for Lovie to be fired and promote Dirk K. to head coach!

One thing for sure,,, the Bucs CAN NOT defend a 3-step drop quick slant ! That has been evident ever since Tenn and especially vs. Was…. Why not ??

I read a quote prior to the Washington game from dashon Goldson where he said it didn’t work out in lovies defense because he’s “not a robot” now Goldson is not a very good safety but with that said if lovie does not let these guys play with instinct it will NOT work….lynch played with instinct as did sapp and brooks ….let these guys play their style but I’m the confines of your defense LOVIE!!!!!

Gimmick rookie QB that most people had ranked at about 15 in the league, and Jameis ranked at about 28. The kid is on a crummy team, just like Jameis, so get off the I’m right about Jameis thing please. The Titans suck, we suck. Both QB’s look promising to me.

I’m torn. The Barney Fife looks make me laugh like crazy! Good laughs will stop if Lovie gets canned. Winning records or good laughs? I’m torn.

I think some readers may have already suggested this, but it would be great if you would actually put Lovie on the spot in an upcoming press conference about what is up with this defense and why it has regressed and not gotten any better. And don’t let him off the hook about it. He was brought in to make this defense a top defense. What has happened?
Maybe you have already but really would like to see the media press him more for accountability (his own that is).

outside of joe cullen, i think the quality of the coaches on defense is extremely suspect. when you have star players professing to be clueless about what went wrong in a historic comeback and when the secondary can’t execute fundamental techniques, it tells me there is not enough going on in the position group meetings.

Wouldn’t it be, Pie in some peoples faces if..Lovie turns this ship around and starts winning? The man knows how to win and has won before in this league. Lets se what he’s made of in upcoming games. I’m sure he knows the..heat is on him. Lets see. He might just surprise us all. I hope so for his sake. I kinda like the guy.
