Lovie Knows Devastation; Thinks Most Bucs Don’t

Lovie Smith seems to have a selective memory condition

Lovie Smith had plenty to say at his news conference this afternoon.

Basically, Lovie explained the state of the union is strong, and he thinks the Tampa Bay squad that led 24-0 yesterday is the true identity of the team at One Buc Palace.

Lovie’s glass was two-thirds full, more than his usual half.

But Lovie got a little carried away. He was asked about counseling his team on how to recover from a brutal loss, and Lovie stated his team doesn’t have much experience with painful defeats.

Huh?

“Being just a competitor in general, most of the guys probably haven’t had anything that hurts that way, that bad. But guys like me have,” Lovie said. “I know what it feels like to really be devastated after a loss. But what you do as a coaching staff is you move on. There’s a mourning period, though, and today is our mourning period.”

Did Lovie forget the Bucs were absolutely humiliated and clobbered on opening day at home?

Did Lovie forget the Ravens dropped 35 points on the Bucs in 16 — sixteen — minutes last year, en route to a 38-0 lead in Tampa?

Did Lovie forget Tampa Bay was humiliated on national TV last year in Week 3, trailing 56-0 to the Falcons?

The Bucs also blew third- and fourth-quarter leads in New Orleans and lost in overtime, a heartbreaker that could upped the Bucs’ 2014 record to 2-3.

Sorry, Lovie. Your Bucs have plenty of experience in crushing, soul-sucking losses.

As Joe detailed yesterday, another kick-in-the-balls loss should not be tolerated by anyone.

There was a key question/answer point in the presser….when Lovie was asked about not trying to get more points at the end of the half…..he scolded the reporter not to bring up past games…..however…that is exactly the point….it shows a pattern over several games of a non-agressive gameplan….and that sends the wrong message to his players….and the opposing team.

The reporter needed to press him on it…..he is getting a pass from the media. I realize they need to maintain a positive relationship with the head coach….but they also need to do their jobs.

  2. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

A full day for mourning? In the nfl? With another game 6 days away?

Is this guy for real? “On to Atlanta and a chance to prove what we are” was what I wanted to hear and this guy wants the team to take a full day to mourn

    Dog help us

  3. lightningbuc Says:

Look up ass-clown in the dictionary and you’ll find Lovie’s picture as the definition.

  4. Clodhopper Says:

32-74 with 73 fun losses and one devastating loss, huh Lovie?

I’m tired of hearing about getting over it. No, you dont get over it. You use it as motivation and passion for the next game. You what that is, Lovie? Passion? It’s what you leave behind every time you leave your house!

  5. Lamarcus Says:

I see this team quitting on him after this loss.

  6. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I realize they need to maintain a positive relationship with the head coach….but they also need to do their jobs.

Aye Matey and there’s the rub. If you cut off access to the head coach it’s tougher to do your job. It’s really one of the parts of being a sportscaster, writer, blogger, media type in sports that I do not miss…relationships with folks you need to cover objectively, powerful folks who can provide or deny access to the stories you need. Tough job.

  7. Clodhopper Says:

I also have a problem with the word mourn. Mourning is what people that feel sorry for themselves do. Dont feel sorry for yourselves. Hike up your skirts, put in the effort and get better. Real effort. Not the “I thought this team was ready” effort just to be clobbered by day one rookie kind of effort.

  8. Charlie V Says:

    What a condesending SOB!

  9. tmaxcon Says:

I truly feel sorry for lovie smith he is clearly delusional and in need of professional help. I wish the best for him.

  10. This Guy Right Here Says:

“But what you do as a coaching staff is you move on.”

No Lovie… What you do as a coaching staff is:

    a) apologize to the fanbase
    b) figure out why youre failing as a coach
    c) correct your failures as a coach
    d) get fired
    e) and THEN move on

  11. This Guy Right Here Says:

dammit Joes, just when I thought I could wind down, watch some real football, you throw up another Lovie article, pull me back in.

    Screw You Lovie.

  12. destro44 Says:

When I watched the game the image in my mind is Levante Davids reaction to each of the last 2 touchdowns. He was pissed on the blown coverage and just looked heartbroken on the last one. I can’t believe he has faith in the team or the system at this point and that is a problem. When the best defensive player on the team isn’t buying in, its time for a change.

  13. AceofAerospace Says:

Lovie should make the moral move and just resign because honestly, he’s just stealing now.

  14. Rojas Says:

Would love Gus Bradley as a Defense Coordinator, if Lovie Smith is fired along, with Frazier

  15. This Guy Right Here Says:

Going back to how Lovie said that:

“But what you do as a coaching staff is you move on.”

Notice how he mentioned the “coaching staff”… This guy is HAS NEVER put the blame squarely on his shoulders… Just right there, he’s trying to divert the blame to the rest of his staff.

    What a lowlife.

  16. DefenseRules Says:

It’s obvious to most Bucs fans that this defense is stagnated. The DLine isn’t pressuring opposing QBs, the LBs, CBs & safeties can’t cover worth a hoot, tackling stinks and the penalties are off the charts. The defensive talent level looks to be sub-par for an NFL team, and the coaching can’t find a way to compensate.

I’ve tried to put myself in the shoes of the players in the Bucs locker room, listening to Lovie’s “We’ve got to stay the course” messages loss after loss after loss. At some point, players who were there before Lovie arrived have to be thinking “Blah blah blah blah blah … this is the same old crap we’ve heard for far too long.”

I keep wondering how long before the defensive players check out on Lovie. If their performance on the field is any indicator, maybe they already have.

  17. pelbuc Says:

This con man is just feeding the media and the fans the same bogus excuses week after week and the press gives him a pass every week. The same press ran Schiano out for a lot less. As fans, we need to send a clear message to the Glazers that we just rather not care than to see this excrement every Sunday. Don’t go to the games.

  18. ndog Says:

Hey Joe have you seen Gerald McCoy today, I’m still looking for him after his no show yesterday?

  19. Buccfan37 Says:

Put Lovie out to pasture, either that or an older old folks home.

  20. SteveK Says:

I wish Schiano had gotten a third year.

  21. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

I don’t want to sound like a wuss, but the personal attacks on Lovie are uncool. The guy is not a bad person. He’s just not getting the job done.

  22. This Guy Right Here Says:

So PR are ready to let Lovie go… Sander and BN are all but saying it outright… Even the Big Dog admits that he stopped drinking the kool-aid..

Time for the Joes to bring it home, and call out this Fraud of a HC.. fans cant do it alone!

This team is in DIRE NEED of a Change in Culture! A Change in Attitude! Positive, Agressive, Jameis-Like, Born Leader-type Coaching! Call out the Fraud Joes & help send him packing!

  23. Tom Edrington Says:

All I can say to Lovie is:

    We are vaaaaary, vaaaary disappointed….

  24. Danr Says:

here is how lovie saves his season: fire his own son, and his OC

everyone is shocked at him making such drastic moves… and wait to see how it works out.

  25. This Guy Right Here Says:

“I don’t want to sound like a wuss, but the personal attacks on Lovie are uncool. The guy is not a bad person. He’s just not getting the job done.”

I’d let up if he was genuinely apologetic to the fans.. Took full blame. (which he Never does).

Instead, he insults our intelligence, and does it with undeserved arrogance… How many more “next week” speeches do we need to hear? He’s failed as the Head of Personnel.. Failed as our Defensive Coordinator. And he’s Failed as our Head Coach… And after 18 losses, he hasnt once looked in the mirror and put the blame squarely on himself.

    Screw You Lovie.

  26. Yungry Says:

If I need a babysitter, Lovie would be tops on my list. If I need a coach, I’d look for somebody with a pulse. He’s a great person but that doesn’t make him a great coach. His Super Bowl loss will only take him so far.

  27. Brent Says:

You guys sound like you think this team is the packers. You sound all heartbroken. I get being a little frustrated but we were talking a 6-7 win team before the season started. Maybe due to Lovie’s mistake they win 4-5.. Suck either way. Might as well wait til the end of the year and see how it turns out. At that point worry about firing lovie. i can assure you we dont have a better replacement on our staff. Freaking out after every loss is pointless. Relax.

  28. DB55 Says:

hey I know at least one guy who isn’t devastated AT ALL!

    Hi-fives and hugs for everyone!

  29. DB55 Says:

Now, the offense is light years ahead of our defense
    **************
Like I said 100x Jameis will succeed dispite Lovie Smith.

  30. Steve from oregon Says:

Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser….Lovie is a good loser.

  31. loggedontosay Says:

If Lovie is fired, the fact that the Bucs do not have enough tenant to win will not change. The Glazer will on set themselves back further. When you are rebuilding, you are evaluating talent. The Bucs do not have the talent, and Revis was to expensive to build a team around.

  32. Trubucfan22 Says:

I think lovie needs an intervention.

  33. Jman Says:

Score more tGan 6 in the second half.

  34. grafikdetail Says:

destro44 on that last TD i David would’ve been in proper position it was a pick 6 or incomplete pass

  35. Jman Says:

Just wait til offensive turnovers come back against real teams

  36. DB55 Says:

Truth is there’s plenty of positives to discuss.

Marpets personal foul was epic. Goldson hit his qb and he was going hear about it, fn love that play! JW playing with 2 WRs and no TEs. Dougie Fresh killing it with a 7.2 yard avg. wowzers! How about JWs audible to Dye, what a pass, what a play, mcnasty! How could I forget Mike Evans 22pts on fantasy, caught the ball with his hands and made a play or two like the 40y bomb for the TD, poster! JW got his squad clicking, dougie fresh refuses to go down, the receivers are stepping up and the oline wants to block. BTW, Howard Jones?! WUWT?

    I like it, good job!

  37. Ray Rice Says:

Black Monday can’t come soon enough. Fire his A$$$$$! I was a believer in Lovie. Supported him from the beginning. But after seeing the same dumb A$$$$$ $hhhit over and over I’m done with him. FUKN garbage A$$$$ MF coach!

  38. Eric Says:

One of the thing I like about Lovie. He stays positive and never panics.

    Great trait.

It will pay dividends. He’s got a very young team, but they show great promise IMO.

Go bucs. I think they will give the Falcons a run for their money on Sunday. They are beatable.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

The only thing guaranteed is Lovie is incapable of making adjustments and the fact someone else will be the fall guy other than Lovie. He has made a career of burning through offensive and defensive cordinators to save his own sorry arse. Lovie is hardly the good guy some of you want to make him out to be. a true man of character would take responsibility for his failures not continue throw others under the bus. Lovie is a hypocrite dinosaur who has snow jobed his way to a 12 year head coaching gig while winning nothing. He wants full control without taking full responsibility for his numerous failures. This team will go nowhere until that fraud is cut lose.

  40. Sick of Lovie Says:

Absolutely believe Lovie needs to go. But, absolutely believe we cant afford to fire him this season, or next season, or the season after that. We are stuck with another terrible executive decision made by the boys up stairs. I think that Koetter along with Winston’s natural personality and will to win are what has the offense showing promise.
The defence on the other hand, miserable. I cant say I’ve seen such unmotivated players before. Sure, there are a couple guys that are playing their tails off (LVD, J. SMITH, ALEXANDER, etc.). But, for the most part, they look stagnant. They look uninspired. They look like they do not believe it will get better.
How do you play an entire half of football as a Dlineman, watch your secondary get eaten alive, lose a BIG lead and not even sniff the QB?
And I’m sorry, I’m a GMC fan but dude, stop showing up to training camp in your over priced bath robe with stupid schitt in your hair and just play football. Please, earn that 100 mill. They pay you to crush people, maybe take off the pjs and find your work boots.
LVD…. please find whatever it was that you were doing last year and the year before and do that again. Sure, hes lighting some people up, but doing it after a big reception for a first down ain’t cutting it.
And for Gods sake, please, find a way to get off the field on third down!!!
Knock it off with the stupid penalties. I’ve never seen a team gift so many first downs in all my life.
Sorry fellas, I had to get some of that off my chest. All is well, GO BUCS!!!

  41. rhenry Says:

    @ DB55

Im with you man, love the Marpet play. The thing is Marpet will go to battle for Jameis because he is a natural born leader, he has the “it “factor.” Lovie, he has the not factor. I am not going to keep my foot on the gas before halftime. I am not going to make halftime adjustments. I am not going to challenge the officials no matter the call. I am not going to own it “take accountability”for the loss. I am not going to ever show emotion on the sideline and fire up my team. I am not going to bench schmuck Jenkins. I am not going to …………………

  42. Tampa Tony Says:

Loser Lovie’s pressers are hilarious, it’s like listening to someone with Alzheimer’s give you advice on how to pick up girls

Lovie’s not a bad person? I guess Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart where not bad people either? All three are con artist’s hiding behind religion.
