Hard words for Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Fear is swirling in the air, fear that glass tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins will return from injury and upset the smashmouth, in-your-grill blocking by the Buccaneers’ offensive line.
Former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, a 12-year NFL veteran and a notorious mauler in the run game, said he believes Seferian-Jenkins has the talent to be a complete tight end, but his game must change.
Becht was on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday responding to former Bucs guard Ian Beckles’ contention that the team is better without Seferian-Jenkins because he can’t block.
Becht said the Bucs’ recent success should be enough to awaken Seferian-Jenkins’ commitment to the running game.
“I think it just needs to be stressed to him that the blocking is as important,” said Becht, who went on to say watching of Brandon Myers in action and what the Bucs are doing at the point of attack should set a great example.
“I think that to me, that will be enough to show him that, you know, that’s got to be a required part of his game.”
What’s unclear is when Seferian-Jenkins will return from his shoulder injury. He played in just nine games last year and in Weeks 1 and 2 this year.
Joe’s confident the Bucs will find a role for their big tight end when he returns. However, Joe’s also confident Lovie Smith won’t do a darn thing that could jeopardize his beloved rushing attack.

Make him a 3rd down tightend on obvious passing situations. That’s about all you can do with a 6’8 injury prone guy who don’t wanna block.

Last years second rnd draft pick should be used like Tim wright the undrafted, Super Bowl ring wearing TE that all he did was score TD for TB but got traded cuz he missed one (tough) pass. That guy? That got traded for a rookie kicker who got cut 2 weeks later?
Yet another example of Lovie putting the players who give us the best chance to win in a position to succeed.

Judging by how much he enjoys congratulating himself after doing anything noteworthy, I doubt he would put much time or effort in to something that doesn’t set him up to be the ultimate beneficiary. Why would he work on a skill that would get someone else in to the endzone?

ASJ can not be counted on. Fragile. People need to stop including him as a weapon. He can not stay on the field. Never has including college. Bad draft pick. You can’t gamble with lengthy injury histories that early in the draft

At this point you can’t argue against his ability only his lack of production do to injury… When he returns it will be a huge plus in the over all production of the offense but it could hurt the newly resurgent Musel Hamster…. Although you can hide a TE’s ability to block you can’t do it with a run first option…. The OC has a good problem to deal with for a change!!!

For a while I thought ASJ would be Jameis’ go-to guy, even more so than Mike Evans. Right now I doubt either of them will be his go-to guy this season. ASJ’s problem seems to be that he can’t stay healthy, limiting his opportunities to build chemistry with Winston (caught 7 out of 10 passes for an outstanding 20 yds/catch average but he’s only played in 2 games). Evans problem seems to be that he can’t catch the ball this season for some reason (been thrown to 33 times, but only caught 13 passes).
My hunch is that Koetter will limit both of them going forward rather than feature either in the offense. Reliability and being an all-around player are obviously important to our HC and OC, and right now both players have work to do in those areas it seems.

Another gem found by L&L in the 2nd round.A huge bust with an attitude problem. He’s very soft and immature. All these bad draft picks and FAs plus all the dead money yet GM gets a pass. We could’ve kept Revis, Penn, Zuttah and Wright as DB55 correctly noted, with a lot less dead money and much better players.

I know this doesn’t apply to every athlete everywhere…..but I do believe that a large percentage of injury prone athletes probably don’t have the same commitment to they’re training and conditioning in the offseason as that tough it through the season. This team needs to find a way to have success to motivate players who land here knowing they actually have something to play for. Again I don’t think this applies to all players but a good percentage of them.

If he don’t/can’t/won’t block then so put him in the situation to do so because he’s a liability and he’s hurting the team! Put him in throwing situations and stretch the field, make a redzine package for him! Seattle is having the problem with Jimmy Graham, he wants to play receiver, he don’t want to block. My advise to Keotter is use him for his strengths, and quit trying to force blocking down his throat, because he’s holding way to much and killing our drives.

He’ll have to actually be on the field to block. And he’ll need to stay healthy. So far he seems pretty breakable.

Why all the bad blood for Seferian-Jenkins? There is chemistry between him and Winston. Where is all the “he cant block” stuff coming from? He has struggled this year with blocking but blocked well in college and last year. The guy got hurt and before he got hurt he was the offenses go to guy. He hasn’t dropped a pass or fumbled the ball this year. He was even breaking tackles. The other intangible is that he opens up the game for VJAX and Evans. When he is in the game a safety will come up to double on him. Seferian-Jenkins is back..its a good thing.

The problem is his quarterback sucks. If ASJ had Mariota or Glennon throwing him the ball it would be placed in the perfect spot for a sure reception. Conclusion: Winston is a below average quarterback who has vision problems

Anyone watching the Saints/Birds game? I love the way Clayborn just stands there and looks at people after a sack. Another player that just didnt seem to work out here but goes to another team and seems to fit just fine.

Becks pegged him as Tissue like early in the preseason after he got destroyed multiple times. Spot on obviously. “Soft” as tissue and brittle like “glass”

@ buc 1987, probably a little unfair true but I hated this pick. After hearing his injury history we use a high 2nd rd pick on him. We could have drafted an equally talented non injury prone guy. Hope he works out I’m all for winning but just frustrated at this point as he has been to this point everything I thought – walking medical bill.. Did I mention high2 nd rd pick??

i am not sure bust is the correct label for asj but the facts are he simply can’t stay healthy and it goes way back therefore he was picked to high by the regime. you can’t gamble with players with such a lengthy injury history that high. I don’t think anyone is questioning his talent just his heart and the fact he can’t stay of the field. It’s one thing to miss a game or two here and there but that dude misses big chunks of time. your best ability is your availability not sure who said that but I think it was Raheem

I just don’t like the kids attitude. He acts like he’s the next Tony Gonzalez and yet he can’t stay on the field nor can he have consistent production nor can he block. I think every game he’s in he gets at least 1 holding penalty. He thinks because he’s gifted with size and athleticism that allows him to work less. Enough with the captain Morgan poses and the high stepping into the end zone when we are down 4 scores. Humble yourself and realize you aren’t all that and a bag of potato chips and u aren’t guaranteed success here in the NFL just because you were drafted in the 2nd round and you are a big target. Kid better get his head on straight or he will be done here in Tampa.. Lovie and Light aren’t going to let him off the hook because of the injuries.

tmaxcon…I get the point, I thought he was picked too high myself. I thought he was a 3rd round talent coming out. So I get the point. IF he stays healthy though he does look good. He had good numbers in week 1, which was lost in the middle of the Titans drubbing of the Bucs D.
Even still if I had a nickel for how many times I read last season and this summer that Charles Sims was a waste of a pick….
Give rookies TIME, that’s all I’m saying. He COULD go through a stretch of no injuries at all and turn out to be a beast. TE’s get hurt all the time. Winslow, Gronk, Graham etc…they all seem or seemed to get injured quite often.

ASJ couldn’t be any more fragile. He’s got talent though. I’m still hoping he can find a healthy stretch of games and he can finally project his talents without limitations. He could give Jameis a hell of a target on third downs.

Every One of u are insane, ASJ is best Passing option we have and that includes VJAX, even with the injuries last yr was still best offensive Weapon we Had, He gets Hurt so mush Cause he is asked to block 250 pound Linebackers, Newsflash People a lot of Great TE’s have not been great Blockers through History, we have other TE’s that are Capable of Blocking, don’t ask Him to Block keep Him Healthy and He will put up outstanding Numbers every week…all u Blowhard Buc Haters can Go Blow somewhere else, cause this Team is on its way to making a Breakthrough, u guys Refuse to Believe it but we have a Legit shot at Making a playoff Run this yr. ATL went down tonight and Cam will Be Destroyed by the Legion of Boom Sun. then we come out and Beat Washington then we are all of a Sudden 3-3 with a lot of Winnable Games left on the Schedule, and to top it off I think the Saints Exposed the Falcons and the Way to Beat them is Exactly How this Bucs Team Wants to play, we can beat them both times this year.

injuries are always an issue with these ‘tweener TEs. it seems half the teams in the NFL have a TE that can go off for 100 yards and a couple TEs but then has a knee, ankle, shoulder, etc injury and is out for multiple weeks. julius thomas, jimmy graham, travis kelce, antonio gates are all guys who are great in the passing game but playing the TE position as a lighter faster guy takes its toll and they all miss games. even gronk went through a couple injury plagued years where people were wondering how long he could last in the league. ASJ is just another one of those. if you ask him to play more of a WR role he has a shot to survive the season, but if you put him in the trenches count him out or “limited” for 6-8 weeks a year.
