Dolphins Consider Schiano For Defensive Help
October 8th, 2015The architect of the NFL’s No. 1-ranked run defense in 2012, former Bucs commander Greg Schiano, has his name back circulating in NFL executive offices.
And it’s not because he had 11 wins in two years as Tampa Bay head coach, a feat Lovie Smith might not match.
Per Albert Breer of NFL Network, Schiano was considered by the Dolphins to aid/coach their interim staff in the wake of Joe Philbin’s firing this week.
Joe would love to see Schiano get the gig, which likely would be a chance to impress ownership and earn an interview for the Dolphins’ head coaching gig.
However, Joe’s not sure how Schiano would react to being an assistant coach or advisor, though he wouldn’t have to worry about meal temperature, which might free him up to focus more on football.

I read an article yesterday on NFL com about Campbell the interm HC for the Dolphins which said the first thing he did at practice was start the Oklahoma drill. Basically said that he’ll make the team tougher or break them, whichever comes first.
I think with schiano there they can definitely improve their defense and their mental toughness.
Miss you schiano, Godspeed.

Man!…..The Schiano-billboard-ites from 2013 must feel like wastes
of human life now. Who were they specifically?
I really wonder if there’s a conspiracy to use shills to make our
fanbase look like idiots: The internet haters are rampant for
everyone from Dungy to Winston and everyone in between.
I wonder if its all the same people?
It’s well known that internet shills are used frequently to help advance
agendas. Everything from false product reviews to politics. Maybe when
the Glazers want to dump players rather than pay them, or coaches?
That said, Lovie deserves the criticism more than any coach since
Richard Williamson.

Schiano sucked as a coach that’s one reason team is still digging out of a hole. Dominic and his drafting are another. He might be a good DC but he sucked as a head coach.
October 8th, 2015 at 1:12 pm
Schiano is a GREAT defensive mind period and will bring the Dolphins and Suh to another level just like he did David, Banks, GMC, and Baron while here in Tampa….
October 8th, 2015 at 1:13 pm
Howard Cosell, you are spot on Lovie is in the same breath and the recently departed williamson who I understadn is one of the best WR coaches ever, but sucked as a HC and also Leeman Bennett, so Lovie is in that breath and that is horrible
October 8th, 2015 at 1:32 pm
Schiano was dealt a bad hand here in Tampa but I will admit I didn’t think he was working out as an NFL head coach and thought he had to go. Little did we all know the train wreck around the corner we as fans were going to have to deal with. With that being said, I always thought he would make a great defensive coordinator in the NFL.
October 8th, 2015 at 1:36 pm
Good call and maybe he can straighten Suh’s overpaid azz out.
October 8th, 2015 at 1:43 pm
He seems to have a good eye for talent. Pretty good defensive coach.
Needs to be somewhere where he can’t contact any offensive coach, and he has no ability to adjust during a game.
I’m sure he’s qualified for some sort of defensive position coaching spot, or something front office related (not including thermostat control, or lunch selections, withstanding pasta).
The guy knows pasta.
October 8th, 2015 at 1:57 pm
Would be a good hire for the ‘Phins. I can easily envision them trending towards a top 10 if not better defense with Schiano there vs. the Bucs getting blown out at least three or four more times this year playing Lovie’s brand of D. Good luck coach
October 8th, 2015 at 2:25 pm
Good luck Greg, you got shafted.
Then us Buc fans got shafted.
Sh!tty uniforms and sh!tty play.

October 8th, 2015 at 2:29 pm
Schiano should’ve not been fired in year 2. Lovie can’t and won’t match Greg’s two year mark of Buccaneer wins.
Lovie needs to go
October 8th, 2015 at 2:47 pm
I hope the Jersey Jerkoff gets the job, then he can trade any decent players to the Pats for nothing – but at least Bill will like him better.
October 8th, 2015 at 3:07 pm
You guys are too funny!!! Schiano got shafted? Schiano shouldn’t have been fired? That is the biggest joke I have ever read. Analyst, ex-players, everybody was confused with our defense and they had no clue what some of our coverages were. We were toasted in the secondary religiously. You don’t remember the game announcers saying “I am not sure what type of coverage that was etc.” on multiple occasions? And no, that was not a complimentary statement. Oh and lets not forget pretty much the whole locker room voicing their displeasure with what we were doing scheme wise from McCoy to Revis to insert name here. The locker room tuned him out and when that happens, the coach has to go regardless if the “fan” feels he got a “fair” shake.
October 8th, 2015 at 3:13 pm
Schiano got the best out of GMC and David imagine what he’d do with better talent on D. Dude is Loser Lovie’s superior in every way
October 8th, 2015 at 3:16 pm
Tiny Tim,
Dude had a MRSA outbreak, QB went mental, and a lot of other factors that were out of his control. Dude went 7-9 & 4-12 Lovie won’t touch either of those marks. Lovie has full roster control and a GM of his choosing. Schiano was stuck with a amateur GM.
October 8th, 2015 at 3:23 pm
Tiny Tim…yes he did get shafted in 2013 it was a disaster from the start when your starting QB mentally implodes on you. I can remember 1 blowout loss under Schiano. Many of the other games were close, not all of them, but many. I think he got shafted because 2 years is certainly not long enough. His team went 7-9 as a ROOKIE HC in the NFL. The next year was a shyte storm of events, one right after the other for him. To me practically every Sunday this team plays like crap, makes we wish he was still here. Not saying he was the greatest coach, but now look what we have.
Lovie is a veteran and should get a full 2 years to atleast try to be a little better of a coach than Greg Schiano. It can’t be THAT hard.
October 8th, 2015 at 3:28 pm
Yes he got shafted and I alwasy though he deserved another year as opposed to lovie who has run his course….you give schiano a competent QB and the bucs are in the playoffs…he had the perfect storm that year with the QB and MRSA….he is given one more year bucs make playoffs and either with glennon or some veteran that was out there not sure who but, schiano would have had this team that lovie has run into the ground one of the top teams in the NFC…tough A$$ defense and ground control and probably would have won the crappy nfc south last year
October 8th, 2015 at 3:33 pm
This team is soOOO soft. We need Brent Grimes’ wife, Bobby Knight and/or Jim Leavitt. They know how to some intensity. I wish I could read an article about Lovie being fed up with losing and punched a wall or a fight in practice.
October 8th, 2015 at 4:03 pm
The guy on the radio in the afternoons got Schiano run out of town in his second year. Then cries about how you can’t fire Lovie in his 2nd season. Talking out of both sides of his mouth. He also got Gruden run out of town.
October 8th, 2015 at 4:56 pm
lovie’s awfulness does not vindicate greg schiano’s tenure. it means that we followed two bad hires with a third one, nothing more. greg schiano may have won more games than lovie fit, but unless he was going to hire 2 experienced coordinators and get out of their way, the team had nowhere positive to go under his stewardship. whatever the scoreboard said, whatever talented players he drafted, he was the lesser coach almost every sunday, just like raheem before him and apparently lovie after him. from aggressively pursuing 2 big-hitting safeties who couldn’t cover, to charging the victory formation, to micromanaging all-pro players, to blowing countless 4th quarter leads, to inferior schemes on offense and defense…the list of evidence that head coaching in the NFL was too much for him is long and obvious
October 8th, 2015 at 6:18 pm
Schiano, dealt a much sh!ttier hand, achieved better results than Lovie Smith will in two years.
Call Greg back, because if we don’t win on Sunday, then we ain’t winning a home game all year. š #SiegeTheFans #It’sASucksLife
October 8th, 2015 at 7:20 pm
@bucslife… I couldn’t agree more! Think about this team with Talib, Michael Bennett and Sheldon Richardson (who the jets picked for Revis).. Schiano destroyed this team!
October 8th, 2015 at 9:09 pm
Bo…if Schiano destroyed this team then Lovie is blowing it to smithereens right now.
There’s pieces scattered all over the Bay area. From Sarasota to Spring Hill.
October 9th, 2015 at 2:42 am
Joe said: “And itās not because he had 11 wins in two years as Tampa Bay head coach, a feat Lovie Smith might not match.”. There is no might about it Joe, Lovie will not get to 11 wins this season, in fact right now I am not sure if he can match Leeman Bennett’s total of 4 wins in 2 seasons until the Bucs actually win another game……
October 9th, 2015 at 7:49 am
Bo:
Lovie got to draft a #1 overall QB, and hand pick Josh McCown the season before that.
Schiano was able to draft Mike Glennon in the 3rd round, luckily, as Josh Freeman went awol.
Schiano had a high price FA OG contract Mrsa and need to retire.
Lovie was able to cut and trade the OL to replace with whom he saw fit.
Schiano and Dominik traded for Revis
Lovie cut Revis to sign 3 FA’s, two of which were cut after year one, and the other is benched behind Mike Jenkins.
Sorry, Bo, some of the remaining Freemanites will still try and say Schiano was the devil, but the fact remains that he took out the trash, and Lovie can’t even match half of his wins.

FortMyersDave Says:
“There is no might about it Joe, Lovie will not get to 11 wins this season, in fact right now I am not sure if he can match Leeman Bennettās total of 4 wins in 2 seasons…”
.
Actually, it would be 8 wins this season, because he got 2 last year. Still kind of out of reach though.
UNLESS…the offense turns a corner and our kicker does well.
I mean…if the offense is able to score two more TDs a game, we’re looking at a pretty dominant offense. Then the defense would be what could cost us the games.
The offense IS coming along. I know it seems slow, but it really isn’t. They are only 4 games into the offense and starting 3 rookies.
So far as the kicker, I pointed out all the starting rookies a few weeks ago, and someone had the nerve to say he didn’t count the kicker. Here we are 4 weeks later and the kicker has cost us at least one game and has been cut. Kickers are often the leading scorers on a team. They count. Big time.
With the new offense and the 3 starting rookies on it, I figured it would take time to gel. If it was only a rookie QB, maybe it could be done quicker, but as it stands, I don’t expect to even glimpse much growth before midseason.
After that point, I’m hoping to see the offense improve from game to game. And if it does, it could translate into wins.
Over the next 4 games, we MIGHT win 2-3 of them. It’s possible, given who we are playing, their injuries or their quality of team.
If we get lucky and win 4, that will give us 4 wins for the first half of the season. That means only 5 of 8 games left to reach 9-7 and match Schiano’s record. Seems daunting, but if the Bucs beat a couple more teams now, they could get a little swagger and have some success.
I don’t expect a total of 8 wins, but there is an outside chance of it. Honestly, I think 5-7 wins might be closer to what we see now.
October 9th, 2015 at 8:29 am
dang it, typing in the dark. Meant 9 wins, not 8
October 9th, 2015 at 9:55 am
I miss the sht out of Schiano. He had a ton of crap (beyond his control as a 2nd year coach) to deal with. He did a couple things that pissed me off, but his news conferences were always must see TV. Dude stood up for himself and his team. Always very eloquently delivered. He had a good sense of humor too.
Lovie doesn’t want to score before halftime. Greg wants to punch you in your F’n mouth on a kneel down if a win is even remotely possible. First time I saw The Rush on the kneel down, I was taken aback a bit, but I liked the way that Greg defended it during his post game interview. I also liked the way he stood up to Old Man Coughlin afterwards.
WHo would have thought that hiring Lovie Dovie would make us look back at the Well Hydrated, toes on the line, whimsical days of Schiano as a Golden (Bronze maybe) era.
And our season continues,,,haven’t quit going to games yet this year. Crossed my mind a couple times. It’s still the best Sunday afternoon Tampa party this time of year.
October 9th, 2015 at 1:27 pm
schiano destroyed this team. lovie smith is just whizzing on the ashes
October 9th, 2015 at 1:36 pm
@thong, schiano could shut it down in the second half with the best of them. we lost 4 or 5 games on the final possession even in the 7-9 season. i thought it was a sign we were close, but it turned out to be a sign that our coach was philosophically opposed to finishing teams off, instead responding to second half leads by protecting against the big play on defense and running the 4 minute drill 4 minutes into the second half on offense.
i was in the stands in seattle when our 0-8 or so team jumped all over the 8-1 seahawks. seattle fans were stunned. so were the players. i heard fans saying they hadn’t had the ball moved on them like that all year, and the bucs had it in the bag. 3 TD lead i think. i turned around and said, “you guys have clearly not watched schiano’s bucs in action before…not that i blame you. this is in the bag for the seahawks.” the rest was predictable
again, i think lovie’s awfulness is casting undeserved positivity on the mess that preceded him. moving on from schiano was 100% the right move. what followed, apparently, has not proved to be. i’m incredibly hopeful but even more skeptical
October 9th, 2015 at 5:46 pm
Schiano had the worst pass defense in the NFL also. Our offense carried us that season we finished like 9th in the NFL and also was the number one rushing team.
