Gerald McCoy says Panthers guard Trai Turner is one of his nastiest matchups

Gerald McCoy inspired Joe to shine a spotlight on the Buccaneers’ 2014 draft plan last night.

As Bucs fans remember, the Bucs were in need of offensive line help entering that draft, but opted to snag Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Charles Sims in the second and third rounds, respectively.

Joe and others were left scratching their heads, and/or beating them against blunt objects. Were the Bucs really going to dive into the season hoping ailing guard Carl Nicks made a miraculous recovery and Oneil Cousins and Jamon Meredith were competent guards?

Yes, the Bucs did just that. It backfired, and they coughed up a fourth-round pick and Tim Wright for overpriced Logan Mankins, and started Patrick Omameh for 16 games at right guard. History reveals a 2-14 record behind an awful offensive line.

Bringing that draft to life again is McCoy naming Panthers guard Trai Turner among three of his toughest matchups in the NFL.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night, McCoy fingered Turner, who was a late-third-round pick of Carolina last year, as a future star.

Charles Sims was drafted before Turner in Round 3, as well as before Raiders left guard Gabe Jackson, who had a stellar rookie year alongside Donald Penn in Oakland. Jackson is being talked about as a budding Pro Bowler.

Right now, Sims is a backup running back on a team that didn’t need running back help entering the 2014 draft.

Joe, of course, hopes banged up McCoy kicks Turner’s ass tomorrow and Sims scampers for another amazing touchdown, as he did in Houston. But Joe finds it important to study these key personnel decisions and how they pan out.

The football gods are frowning at the Bucs for not building the protection before bringing in the franchise QB. Astonishing lack of foresight.

    @Joe

You must not be a “lovie loyalist” other wise you would have known that Lovie has a 5 year plan to make a competitive team!!! That is the only way a “Lasting Contender” can be built in Tampa!!!!

It takes time, and when the time comes and the team is still not any good, Then it takes more time!!!!

and after that its the players not executing!!! and after that will be Lovie needs better players!!!!!

Losing and poor personnel decisions are permeating thorugh this organization…gabe jackson was a great college player and a definite need, charles simms…he was the key to the tedford offense working??? COME ON MAN…and TEs are a everywhere to be found…..Joes I am so glad you hold the bucs management and also local radio hosts to the fire and do not want to accept losing from this franchise…they need to show improvement..big dog can get d brooks on for 7 weeks and talk about defense it doesnt matter, whatever lovie is coaching/teaching the defense does not work…show some improvement somewhere….loss this week and gawd forbid to the jags…lovie needs to go

I remember right before the sims pick thinking here comes gabe jackson. Nope, here comes a back that might have been there in the 6th round.

Joe it’s heart warming mccoy inspires you. Maybe you can inspire mccoy to make a play on 3rd down or a critical stop in the second half. Good player but not great. I’ll never bag on a injury but all the excuses and bs from mccoy are tiresome. Lovie teaches them how to lose and mccoy teaches them how to accept losing.

Sims, Edwards, ASJ were all draft mistakes last year. You can not make those mistakes year in and year out and compete.

  6. Ray Rice Says:

Take it with a grain of salt if Aunt Geraldine said it. Everyone gives him a tough matchup. Game hasn’t even started and he’s already giving excuses. Someone rip that “C” off of his chest and give it to THE MESSIAH!

I seem to recall Buccs fans loving those picks…I like Sims for the future still, but I agree, rb wasnt our biggest need…and rbs can be found later in the draft.

  8. Getaclue Says:

Of course he is talking their guard up for when he is pacified again Sunday then him and Levonte can go make is rain after the game with Mike Williams and their glazer money

  9. MadMax Says:

That draft was before licht was brought in right?

  10. Brett Says:

Was baffled by the ASJ and SIms picks. Most pf the 2014 personnel moves had disaster written all over them before they started. Signing a LT who had never been a full time starter, getting rid of Zuttah and then having to trade for Mankins. This year’s draft seems to be a lot a better but still baffled at why the Bucs didn’t go harder after some vet o-line help in the offseason and how they managed to TRADE for an free agent defensive end b/c they didn’t do the contract right.

Yeah, after years of bad decisions rebuilding takes time, but so far the decision making seems less than stellar. On top pf that, based on penalties and mistakes, so does the coaching.

Is our kicker gonna make any field goals this week???

  12. bucrightoff Says:

The ASJ was a bit of a reach with need relative to value, but the Sims pick was a total debacle. I don’t know how anyone can defend it, it was the least needed position on the team, it’s the least needed position in the league. Just a really horrific pick.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

@mike..during the ’14 draft I said the same thing…me being an sec guy(diehard gator fan) I knew gabe Jackson was a great player and knew he could come in and be a solid starter in his rookie year…the sims pick caught me completely off guard..then for lovie to go out and grab 2 olinemen in the 5th round made no sense…I agree with you sims might have been there in the 5th or 6th round…regardless of what the end result of this season, I say draft oline first round to protect jameis, de 2nd round, and oline in the 3rd…we have to protect the qb and open up holes for the rb..without great trench play we will be back at square one…GO BUCS!!!

  14. MadMax Says:

Oh we’re going D pass rush with our first, probably a top 3 pick…needs to be Joey Bosa! Then Guard or a spectacular RB for the 2nd.

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

Games are win and lost on draft day.
We didn’t need sims or asj.
We draft those guys we are stout

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

Ole miss td is the pick

  17. bucsbedabest Says:

The NFL draft is so important and such has either a positive or negative results which impact the year and following years. If the ASJ and Sims picks were drafted differently it would have opened up this years draft for some very special players.
