Lovie: Counting To 12 Troubles Will Be Simplified

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve.
It ain’t that hard to count to 12.
But the Buccaneers have trouble with that under Lovie Smith. Remember? It happened twice in a game.
The Bucs were back at it again yesterday. But this time Marcus Arroyo wasn’t around to blame.
Lovie Smith, commander of the Bucs and its defense, had multiple issues of 12 men on the field. Lovie was asked about that this afternoon at One Buc Palace. In a mystifying response, Lovie offered a lot of detail and said he can make effectively counting to 12 easier.
“When you try to match up sometimes and have an ideal set up for what they have it doesn’t work the way you would like for it to do sometimes,” Lovie said. “In particular, you know, we substitute. Of course, they go three receivers, we try to match up with an extra defensive back. Take out a linebacker. But also when a team, in short yardage situations may go two tight ends, two running backs. We try to match up a corner for a safety. Those were some of the problems that we had yesterday. But those aren’t things that we’ll have a lot of trouble with going forward, we can simplify some of that.”
“Simplify?”
Joe found that answer preposterous. Lovie has 10 years of head coaching experience. He’s got a hand-picked staff in its second year together. Lovie runs the defense with experienced Leslie Frazier as his right hand.
Lovie has proven himself to be anything but a precision game manager through 19 games. His highly-penalized, mistake-prone team might just be reflecting its head coach.

I think this coaching staff is at least average (Smith / Frazier) to above average (Koetter). I am mystified as to why we have the same discipline problems as we had under Raheem and Schiano — especially since 75% of the roster has turned over since Lovie got here. We have an organizational disposition to sloppiness. Maybe it’s the Glazers…the only constants.

Sometimes when you don’t have a legit excuse, you just have to make one up. This seems to be the case in this situation. I for one would really just prefer the answer of “we screwed up and have to make sure it doesn’t happen again”, but that’s not Lovie’s style. Regardless, it’s embarrassing to have that happen 3 times in a football game. I’d venture to say teams like the Patriots don’t have it happen 3 times all year, and I highly doubt Bellicheat has to “simplify” things for his team to substitute properly.

How about this coach:
– Were not a good football team
– Were not playing together as a team
– We really have no legitimate leader on this roster
– We are consistently out-coached
– We’re one of the most undisciplined teams in the NFL
– We’re really aren’t sure what is going on
– There’s too much talent on this roster to play like this
– We’re consistently losing more and more fans each week
– If I don’t fix this soon, I’ll be looking for another job in 2016
– etc…
This roster of athletes just does not appear to be a team to me. There seems to be no cohesiveness or chemistry. No swagger, no fire, no confidence.
The Panthers are going to destroy the Sucs in front of their home crowd, again…

No wonder theyre Dazed and Out of Place out there on the field! Can we get a REAL HC in the Motherfcukin Building?? With a Plan? A Real fcukin GamePlan??? And the means to get that plan through to his players???

Lovies defensive philosophy is built on hope and prayes. Hope they stay healthy and pray they produce and minimize mistakes versus getting good football players. It’s more important to know the system than be an actual good football player. They know the system but can’t count… sounds like a winning combination

Let’s see … 50 comments and about half of them involve replacing Lovie with ________ (fill in the blanks).
Since 2008 we’ve had Jon Gruden for 2008 & 2009, Raheem Morris for 2010 & 2011, Greg Schiano for 2012 & 2013, and now Lovie Smith for 2014 & 2015.
Oh ya, 2 years is about right. More than enough time to build a winning team. If not, the natives get restless and we certainly can’t have that in Bucville.
Definitely time to cut Lovie loose and hire someone else. Perhaps we’ll even get different results with the next coach hired by the Glazer boys. Somehow I doubt it however.

Starting to wonder if the Bucs will ever get a good coach again. Not a single previous coach of this franchise is a head coach in the NFL right now. First off, it would take a special person to turn this train wreck around, so an up and coming coach would not want the risk. Second, it is career suicide.

I dont get the freakout. Yeah, we gave up some yards but we only gave up 19 points. Thats pretty good. We held our opponent under 20 points in 2/3 games so far. Thats pretty good for a stop gap defense of cast offs. Hopefully as we get younger players in here to learn and play with the vets that know Lovies system, this defense will grow into a top unit. But its not there yet. We need a True game changer at DE. A strong DT to play the 1 to Geralds 3. We also need a corner to be our unquestioned guy to play across opposing teams no.1 reThe problem is our offense is young and kinda predictable. We have a rookie qb. We have no speed at receiver. Thats got to be a priority next year. AsJ is pretty good, but when he’s hurt, Stocker and Myers are sub par. Doug Martins and strong, durable work horse but we need a fast, explosive change of pace back to compliment him. Sims looks like a bust. And our o line is really ypung mixed with really old which can be trouble. Just gotta hope Smith and Marpet grow and keeping adding through the draft. The iffense can be good someday but its a couple pieces shy of being truly dynamic.

Please excuse that post. it was submitted before I was done cleaning it up a bit. Basically I was saying that Im not worried about yesterdays loss. The defense did their job by holding the Texans to 19 points and the offense is still a work in progress.
However, we can not get embarassed again.

Because the Texans offense is….the Texans offense. It’s one of the worst in the league. And a backup QB, backup RB and mostly backup OL basically had their way with the Bucs defense. The Bucs defense can only look decent when it’s producing turnovers, otherwise it’s going to get destroyed by any half decent QB.

I think the best option for a coach if the Glazers move on is a second chance coach. Up and comerss and high profile. Coaches won’t come here, hell we traded for Gruden. We should look for a very good coordinator from a well run well coached franchise who is still young, had a decent head coaching position but got run out. Josh Mcdaniels is a real option who may jump at an opportunity to be a head coach again. He comes with connections to good coaches as well.

I played 3 years of pee wee football, 4 years of high school football and a couple of years at a small college

The Bucs better “simplify” all 3 phases of football and execute it. Lovie has an excuse for everything but he is unable to will his players to execute. Some coaches like Belichick squeeze the very most out of his players while other coaches such as Lovie Smith seem to suck the life out of his players. You’ve had several months to “simplify” the gameplan. Now is not the time. Either the coaches didn’t teach well or the players fail to buy in but time is runing out on the Lovie regime. I’m really starting to wonder if Koetter will be O Coordinator next season. if Lovie doesn’t make it to next year, Dirk should be in the running for a promotion.

Bucs will have a great cap situation, relatively young team, potential franchise QB in place and a top pick. It’s in theory a very attractive job….except, of course, for the Glazers. But even then I think a top OC would look at this job and want to come here. Get a Greg Roman or Kyle Shannahan or another OC looking to move up.

There’s been only TWO constants since the Bucs played Game 1 almost 40 years ago: Hugh Culverhouse and The Glazers. Both had a history of trying to run the team ‘on the cheap’ and of making poor management decisions.

I’m not Lovie’s biggest fan, but what do you expect him to say. This was another pitfall but I think they’re getting better. It sounds crazy but with every week Jameis will improve and I think they will actually upset the Panthers. I don’t think it will be close either. Bucs by 17 pts haha.

A 12 man penalty is usually when two or more players are confused about the sub groups going in and dont know if they should get off/on the field. Uts things like that these players got to know. I would guess that Lovie and Leslie go over these various personel groups every week. Its just not sinking in. It was different when we had a Sapp and Brooks to keep those things in check on gameday. This defense dosent have that. GMC is a great player but he dosent have that cut throat leadership like Sapp. Same with LVD to Brooks. Just hoping these guys keep studying to get it down.
And as a former HS player, you dont see those mistakes in the lower levels because the different sub groups arent nearly as complex and there arent as many of them :p

Sitting here watching the Packers serving KC…so this is what it’s like to watch a real time work the grid iron. On offense, varied formations, creative route combinations, stacked wide receivers “picking” coverage, quick slants, bubble screens, run outside, run inside…On defense, who’s dropping into coverage, who’s coming for the qb? It it the Mike, is it the Will, hmmm, maybe it’s the corner…is it man, is it zone? Why is it that I see none of this as part of our game plan. So sick and tired! How about a linebacker or corner blitz to assist pressure. How about split Doug Martin or Sims III out wide and get them in space on a quick slant. It’s the same old formations, over and over. The same old intermediate route combinations. The same old run between the tackles. It’s the epitome of vanilla football time and time again, Sunday after Sunday, no wonder we can’t win a game.

If you can’t get pressure from your front four, the Tampa Two doesn’t work. It’s that simple. Your linebackers need to make the receivers pay for those three-step drop over the middle passes. All you need from the secondary is speed and the ability for corners to stay close enough to a receiver that a safety can get there the same time a ball does.

So you want to overlook the lack of leadership from arguably our best players, GMC, LVD.. Overlook the lack of discipline, mental lapses from our HC Lovie?
Fair enough, so you want to put it on the Glazer Kids.. I think we all can agree that they kept their wallets closed with Raheem, it was a money move no doubt.. We were in a period of transition, and Raheem was nothing more than a bridge to the next regime.
They saw the state of disarray that Schiano put us in, but at least they opened up their wallets for guys like Goldson, Revis.. But Schiano couldnt get out of his college coach mindset, treated vets like frat boys…
So then, (I believe), they wanted to win back the fans, and try and build that link back to their fathers glory days… And in comes Lovie… I was on board at the time, and so were most other Bucs fans….
The Glazers let Lovie spend their money on ‘his guys’, McCown, Johnson, Collins, Verner, Smith….Tedford….And look at us now…
But The Glazers, in hiring Lovie, did what they thought would please the fanbase… The only positive, is that Lovie was bad enough that we picked up Winston, so now they need to make a calculated decisicion on what HC can pick up where Lovie fcuked up, and bring out the best in this team… The way Gruden was able to do with Dungys squad, until Gruden got too hands on in personnel. And Licht is way more competent to run the management F.O. side of things…
But like the Joe’s mentioned, Lights philosophy is to know when you made a mistake, and cut ties right away… Lovie was the Glazers mistake, (andf most of the fans, sht I was on board when he got hired), but recognize a bad investment and cut your losses while there’s still 13 games left in the season..

For all the people who are blaming the Glazers, pining for Gruden and drooling over Packers.
How did the Glazers screw over Dungy and Gruden? Why do both of them say nice things about the Glazers?
Speaking of screwing over- Imagine if Gruden would have drafted Rogers like he told him ‘You’re my pick’ at Bern’s steak house a few days before the draft. Gruden screwed himself over.
I do think the Bucs should have kept Ron Wolf. He is the reason the Packers are as good as they are. They develop players within and draft well.

It’s starting to get a little old listening to Lovie’s “nothing to see here” approach to every problem. At some point this season he’s going to have to show significant improvement coming from this team or his job might be “nothing to see here” when it’s over.

why is this such a hard concept to master? start with 11 on the field…if 2 people come in…2 must go out? When I played in high school it was simplified by the person coming in to tell the person he was replacing to come out.

Because they’re not stupid.
I’m not going to say a bad word about my old boss even
if he was a completely dysfunctional psycho. It does me no
good at all to throw stones. Any intelligent professional
is going to think the same way.
That said, there are off-the-record whispers that all of the criticisms
of the Glazers are true and then some.
* They run the team on the cheap but they try to disguise it.
* They are terrible at hiring coaches.
* They’re very sensitive to public criticism because they fear
it will effect their bottom line.
I firmly believe that Sileo was fired for taking the Glazers to task
on the air waves. It’s highly conspicuous the way that no radio DJ
or popular blogger will touch the Glazer negligence subject with a
ten foot pole. Local professional talking at happy hour say the same
things that I do. Most of them gave up their season tickets long ago.
That said, I have a lot of love and respect for Malcolm: The guy who brought in Dungy and Gruden and won the SB and ALWAYS had a good team. Franky, his sons have severely1 tarnished his legacy in Tampa.
