Lovie Says Trash Talk = Weakness
September 27th, 2015Mild mannered Lovie Smith is well known as a players coach, but some common football traditions are not appreciated, encouraged or respected by the head coach.
It’s well known that foul language is frowned upon by Lovie. (Joe loves this story from Brian Urlacher.) But Lovie’s desired behavior modification extends to trash talking on the field.
Vincent Jackson hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network and explained.
“Lovie’s a big opponent of, you know, those types of attitudes and those types of behaviors in practice and throughout training camp, even when it’s super competitive,” Jackson said Friday. “Because he knows down the road, if you’re not mentally tough enough to just continue to do your job and not get caught up in those individual-type, selfish-type behaviors, you’re going to be able to help the team. But if you’re doing those things, usually, sooner or later it’s going to catch up to you.”
Joe gets the point here, but Joe doesn’t think there’s any problem with old school jawing at an opponent. The key is being mentally tougher than the other guy. If J.J. Watt can be slowed because, say, Logan Mankins says filthy things about Watt’s sister or momma today, then Joe’s all for it.

He’s a descendent of Chuck Knoll, The Great Knoll wasn’t big on all that chatter either. Me on the other hand…

Boys will be boys. Its a mind game as much as it is physical. If you can get into your opponents head verbally, I’m all for it. You don’t have to curse to say witty things.

You cannot be passive on defense and aggressive in trash talking, Its as simple as that!!!

They should hire professional wrestlers to do the smack talk. Get the Rock to speak for Tampa. Get John Cena to speak for our opponents.

would’ve loved to see lovie trying to impose those standards on the likes of warren sapp and his fellow d linement . i’d employ a slight modification of that rule. if you’re going to talk trash, you’d better back it up if you want to keep your roster spot. if you bark, you’d better bite.

for some guys, it’s as much a part of their game as a DT’s solid bull rush or a CB getting consistent jam on the line. for other guys, i would agree, it is an attempt to compensate for a lack of game and it just ends up making them look foolish and detracts from a methodical sort of demeanor across the unit

Tbh it does nothing but provoke the opponent. Do you really want to bad mouth JJ and get him even more fired up? That just sounds like a stupid idea.

My coaching Philosophy was always “Don’t talk the talk if you can’t walk the walk so it’s best to just keep your mouth shut and just make plays” no sense saying you’re going to do something then getting whipped in the process, just do your job and you don’t need to talk.

Trivia: who said this – “Shut up you fake ass John Randle. You just a fake ass John Randle. Sorry Brad, don’t mean to get you killed.”

@Buc1987
Was that what started Brad Johnson hating Keyshawn??? I know that Brad Johnson started to ice out Keyshawn out of the offense in 2004 which led to Jon Gruden having to step in between and ended up suspending Keyshawn because he backed up the QB!!!

Jameis to JJ – Hey JJ, Yo mama is so dumb, she went to a clippers game for a haircut!
JJ replies, Hey Jameis, Yo Mama so dumb she thought dunkin donuts was a basketball team!

Complete fiction. Brad Johnson had nothing to do with the MeShawn Johnson thing. Johnson wanted a new contract and became a locker room problem because he wasn’t getting it.
You are a true liar in every sense of the word.
