The more sloppy Houston QB Ryan Mallett throws, the better.
Eye-opening information from a guy who types for a living, and that would be Joe Kania of Buccaneers.com.
In breaking down keys for the Bucs to get above .500 for the first time — well, Joe can’t remember that long ago — Kania sort of uses an old coaching cliché: force the Texans to go one-dimensional on offense today.
Every team does this, but Kania explained how letting sloppy Houston quarterback Ryan Mallett throw the ball is like The Gumbo Shop in New Orleans serving Joe their sinful warm bread pudding with whiskey sauce.
The Texans have thrown 105 passes in their first two games, the most of any team in the league, and they’ve lost both contests. Between Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer, the Texans’ quarterbacks have a combined passer rating of 68.7, the second-worst of any team in the NFL. With so many passing attempts, the Texans have not been able to establish the run; the team’s 44 attempts are the seventh-fewest after two games. The formula of shutting down the run and forcing the Texans to air the ball out has proven to be successful thus far.
Of course, it is incumbent that the same Bucs defense that chased and beat up Drew Brees shows up. If the sorry defensive effort against Tennessee rears its ugly head this afternoon, then it doesn’t matter.
If the Week 2 defense returns, the Bucs could have a field day, gobbling up Mallett the way Joe inhales that sent-from-heaven dessert in New Orleans.

Is McCoy even playing? Last I heard he was doubtful.
We’ll see how much of a difference he makes not being there if he doesn’t play.

Bucs played poorly against an unfamiliar AFC Titans team, and well against a very familiar Saints club. Today we learn which game was a fluke. We are playing another unfamiliar foe. Can Lovie scheme against, and prepare his guys to play against such an opponent? History says no. Here’s to starting a new history! Go Bucs!

I purchased NFL gamepass and watched the game last week of the Texans vs. Panthers. Mallett did do not play poorly. I cannot remember seeing as many drop passes as the Texans had last week. It was damn near unwatchable. Their tight end and second WR were awful. If they can catch a few of those, Mallett may be tough.

I do not see Texas scoring a TD on the first drive and I do not see Winston giving up a pick 6 on the Bucs first drive. The Titan game was out of hand very fast and I hope we do not see that happen again this year. The difference is Winston has confidence now and he believes in himself. The keys to today’s game –
1) Buccaneer defense must control Mallett and the Texan passing game.
2) Donovan Smith must control Clowney when they match up one on one.
3) Charles Sims and Doug Martin must get the running game going.
4) Mike Evans needs to be involved.
5) JJ Watt is going to be JJ Watt. Just do not let him take the game over.
6) Jameis Winston needs to have a turnover free game.

I don’t know. This team has a way of making inferior talent QBs look like All Pros. It would be a pleasant surprise for the Bucs to come out of Texas with a win/tie but I wouldn’t bet on it. I’d love to see a ton of screens and draw plays for the Bucs all first half.
