Chris Russo Joins Anti-GMC Cult
September 20th, 2015What is it about guys who make a living behind a microphone for a living and Gerald McCoy?
Does GMC’s agent represent too many radio suits? Is that why radio guys seemingly don’t like GMC?
Locally, GMC is boxed regularly by on-air types, apparently because he’s not Bob Lilly or he isn’t on a path to Canton quite yet.
Last week, the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo of SiriusXM Radio joined the anti-GMC crowd when he went off during the weekly visit of the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.
eye-RAH! Kaufman: Gerald McCoy – Chris, you don’t know this – down here Gerald McCoy, who is a heck of a player, a Pro Bowl player. But some fans criticize him.
Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: Well, you know, listen: I’m tired of Gerald McCoy. I hear he is the best defensive tackle in the league. I’m sick of hearing it. That defense never does a thing. I’ve never seen him make big plays in my life. I know he is on a bad team with no quarterback. You watch him a lot more carefully than I do. Every time I turn around I see [Marcus] Mariota scoring 45. I see Atlanta scoring 50-something. I mean, Lee Roy Selmon was a Hall of Famer and on bad teams too but at least in ’79 he gets to a championship with a good defense. I mean, McCoy, is he a little overrated with your ballclub or not?
Kaufman: Well, I… I… I… am thinking you are making some strong points. Chris, he is the third pick in the 2010 draft. He has never been in a playoff game. Some people think he is a little soft. They don’t like how he helps others up off the ground from the other team. I think that is a little overrated.
Russo: I do too. But still…
Kaufman: Lee Roy Selmon has a bust in Canton and he was the same way. I think – here is the way I would put it Chris: Gerald McCoy has another level that he needs to reach even though he is a very good player. He needs to get a little bit better and a little more disruptive I think is fair.
Russo: Yeah, that is fair.
Let’s be real here: The Bucs’ defense, until proven otherwise, is a joke. One guy, no matter how good he is, will not flip a defense from being a sieve to the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers.
And what moron of an offensive coordinator would actually run at GMC? Please!
GMC is a damn good player. No, he’s not playing at a Hall of Fame level (yet). When has that become some municipal crime?

When you get paid as a game changer but don’t change the game you deserve the criticism. No one is criticizing GMC for not being a hall of famer we are just sick of all his talk and leadership of a sorry defense. Whatever happened to leaders making those around them better? GMC def doesn’t do that
September 20th, 2015 at 10:19 am
McCoy isn’t JJ Watt or 99 Sapp, but neither one of those guys would get any disruption if their d literally couldn’t cover anybody. Want to blame an overpaid superstar, look at 54. As good as he is, they still go straight at him with the pass. He can’t cover an RB in the flat to save his life.

Lets try this play today in N.O. http://postimg.org/image/9tnowadtr

In this defense McCoy is not expected to get double digit sacks. His job is to get consistent penetration and disrupt plays while taking on double teams. Just like every other player, sometimes he does his job better than others but he is not going to get off the chart stats in the system he plays in. GMC is a solid 3 technique but regardless of how good he plays, as Joe alluded to, unless the rest of the defense plays well around him, it won’t make much of a difference.

GMC is overrated most Buc fans are starting to realize this…
September 20th, 2015 at 10:38 am
I’ve saying it for years……GMC is overrated.
….he disappears in games
September 20th, 2015 at 10:39 am
McCoy is taking a beating from many voices. It’s getting ugly when few have anything to say positive about the centerpiece of the Bucs defense. This needs to be turned around quickly. Today can be the start of changing minds.

Wow I just saw GMC’s replacement! I’ve been coming to a remote part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for 15 years and have never seen a bear.
Until this morning!!! I put food out on our porch every morning for the chipmonks. This morning I looked out the front glass storm door and thought my wife and had gone out onto the porch until I looked closer.
Wow a big black bear on our porch finishing off the chippie food. Kind of scary when there is nothing but a thin glass storm door between you and the bear.
Luckily we only have black bears, nothing like grizzlys and not really mean unless you catch a momma and her cub. Still seeing another creature you realize could demolish you in heartbeat is kind of intimidating.
I’m thinking if we could just train him properly he’d make GMC look weak.

@bf37
Agreed… I would love it if the Bucs fearless leader could shut me up… He is making my argument extremely easy…
Overrated…

At what point are the coaches and players held accountable? GMC has been the centerpiece of an underachieving team for his entire career, sans 2010 when he was hurt down the stretch.
Lovie’s D looked 100% more lifeless than Schiano’s D at any point. I haven’t seen that kind of quit since “serial loafer” Sean Jones and company folded up the tents in 2011.
September 20th, 2015 at 10:52 am
Lots of the sacks of Sapp were because he had Ronde Barber and John Lynch and Derrick Brooks back there (and a great coach). Geraldine McCoy has none of that.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:01 am
Not sure how a DT is expected to get sacks when the secondary leaves guys open on every play. Wide open receivers =quick passes = no time to pass rush.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:11 am
McCoy is overrated and very soft. Yeah, he makes an occasional play. But dominant? Creating havoc? No way.
He is not even in Suh’s league. Big Fish in a small, shallow pond in Tampa.
I’d rather have shoved a Brinks truck at Suh and let McCoy test the FA waters.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:11 am
The excuses for this “leader” are outnumbering his impact plays
September 20th, 2015 at 11:31 am
I agree with mad dog.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:45 am
I’m sick and tired of the Bucs talking how great they are, playing poorly and then making excuses.
I, for one, wish they’d just shut their mouths and go out and prove their worth on the field.
Wanna make a fortune? Buy these players for what they’re worth, then sell them for what they think they’re worth…
CB’s Law of Rhetorical Economics: The reason ‘talk is cheap’ is because the supply vastly outweighs the demand.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:48 am
I agree with what Tampa tony says, leaders and good players make others around them better.
Anyone on the defensive line, or the whole defense for that matter, comes into TB and plays worse here.
And I’ll go back to what Sapp said years ago: “you can’t live soft and play hard.”
I don’t care about helping opponents up. Kaufman chose a crappy point to sum up fans’ opinion. It’s the “zippidy do da” while he’s whistling Dixie in between whistles. He reminds me of Dwight Howard, but softer.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:51 am
I’ll trust the experts analysis over most of you any day of the week. Ranked 27th best player in the NFL. Yet, you guys want to trade him for a couple of ham & eggers.
September 20th, 2015 at 11:51 am
I can’t tell when 93 is in the field unless I search for his number.
I know when Watt is on the field, I don’t need to search for 99
September 20th, 2015 at 11:56 am
Wake up Joe, it’s not just radio personalities who see this.
He has very little fire and he gets paid to be great……..and sorry, pro bowls….blah blah blah..
he’s not great.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:31 pm
Joe it isn’t some cult or conspiracy. McCoy disappears way too damn often. He is overrated for the attention he gets and overpaid for his disappearing act on game days. People should stop talking him up like he great. Greatness doesn’t go all David Copperfield on Sundays.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:43 pm
Hopefully, the new coaching staff in 2016 will trade McFraud for some draft picks. Someone please name me a game changing play since he’s been a Buc. …I thought so. Most overrated Buc ever! He’s the last guy that should be talking to Jameis. Saying your one of the better players on a terrible defense doesn’t say much. Bucs would have had a much better team keeping Penn and Zuttah and having traded McCoy. L&L are making Dominik look like a genius.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:48 pm
As usual…Tampa fans bash anyone positive…even players.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:54 pm
They should have Sapp and Rice coach the dline.
September 20th, 2015 at 12:56 pm
@Cobraboy
Love your law of rhetorical economics. That was great and true!
September 20th, 2015 at 2:58 pm
I would trade McCoy for Suh tomorrow. We need some meanness and attitude on the Bucs.
September 20th, 2015 at 5:01 pm
From Russo – Let’s be real here: The Bucs’ defense, until proven otherwise, is a joke. Bucs WIN 26-19. Defense proved otherwise! GO BUCS! F@#$ YEA!!
