John Lynch Says, “I Told You So.”

September 18th, 2015

WinstonMariota

It might just be the No. 1 thing Bucs fans don’t want to hear: The Bucs dropped the ball when they didn’t draft Marcus Mariota.

Joe disagrees with that mindset, but a Buccaneers legend is wagging a finger at Tampa Bay.

Iconic John Lynch, a likely Hall of Famer one day, watched Mariota face America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and the Bucs on Sunday. He then proceeded to hop on FOX Sports Radio to say, “I told you so.”

Yeah, he really said, “I told you so.”

The full audio of Lynch is below:

104 Responses to “John Lynch Says, “I Told You So.””

  1. Cannon Says:

I’m not giving up on Winston (really, I no choice)

However, I really am impressed with Mariota’s quick release.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    John Lynch is a clinger.

  3. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

John Lynch is a moron…i am guessing he did not watch the bucs game film and mariotta will throw 2-3 picks this week against an organized and very good defense and i think or have a feeling that bucs win this week and jameis throws 3-4 scores…

  4. Max Says:

Seems like most of white america has it out for Jameis, they just wanna hate!

  5. Clodhopper Says:

I’m not giving up on Winston either. But if Mariota does happen to have another good game this week? I’ll really start to sweat!!

    Unless Winston throws 6 TD’s

  6. SOEbuc Says:

He wasn’t the only one. But Jameis is our QB now and Im not gonna start bashing the rookie after one lose due mostly to our crappy defense. WHY DIDNT YOU TELL US ABOUT LOVIE JOHN?!!!!

  7. Rob Says:

Joe. I’m shocked you actually mentioned your idol without referring to him as “America’s you know what” (I won’t even write it because it is so ridiculous). Lynch is correct and so was I and multiple others who disagreed with taking Winston. I still hope he does well and develops into a great NFL qb someday but I refuse to anoint him as you did for months. I’m not saying Mariota will be a world beater on the football field either, I just felt much more comfortable in trusting my franchise with him than your idol. Praying that Lovie and company figure out how not to embarrass the organization next week. Go Bucs!

  8. Ernest T. Bass Says:

This will go down as the Biggest Mistake in Draft History! Marcus looked Superior in every category and statistic that QB’s are evaluated! Shameis has in pounds and most likely to sack himself!

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

Hey franchise qb’s grow on trees right tampa bay? This is why this is so heartbreaking we had the pick we had the pick we had the pick.
Worst decision in tampa sports history people.
Ya I guess tony dungy is a racist wanting marcus over jameis.

  10. Bucco Brice Says:

SO TRUE, DUNGY AND LYNCH WERE ON BOARD, RESPECTED BUCS WHO KNOW FOOTBALL…i’m gonna throw up now, ugh 🙁 ….the pick was “as simple as that”…

  11. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @JOE

As a former journalist you guys have earned my respect this morning!!! Providing BOTH sides of a story is the first mark of people with integrity! Kudos to you guys!

  12. Louis Friend Says:

Even if Winston is a bust, it doesn’t explain the rotten performance of the other 52 players and coaches on Sunday.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

I actually thought Lynch was overrated playing for the Bucs, though I haven’t found anyone who agrees with me yet. Hall of Fame worthy? Nah

  14. JAB83 Says:

    Max
Normally a comment like yours is chalked up in my book as someone who just a “foolish ignorant soul” to be nice about it. I tend to ignore people like that and pray for them to not be so… I am extending you those same curtousies plus one… I hope you read this message and take to heart that, IF it is equality or something to that effect you seek from “white America”. First start by seeing yourself in the mirror…. Real change starts with the individuals seeking change… The only thing a comment like yours can do it continue to cause the very thing that so deeply effects your ignorant soul… Stop being a ignorant and be a man just like the rest of us who agree with your reasoning but object to your reaction… People change when they see they have no choice…. You allow a choice of continuing to do the same as has always been… Peace

  15. Ray Rice Says:

My last worry is Mariota. That episode finished last week. I’m more than positive his parade will come to a screeching halt soon. But that wouldn’t make me happy. What would make me happy is seeing this team compete. Show some FUKN fire. Where’s the pride? Where are the captains? It’s sad, but I’m at a point right now where I don’t even think it’s fair to ask for a win. All I want to see is an NFL caliber team on the field Sunday.

  16. Buclife Says:

One game and we have crowned MM the king of the 2015 QB draft and RG3 beat out Luck a few years right? Haha clingers make me laugh hopefully the’re both great QB but I will not judge by one game.

  17. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Just wait on it.😎

  18. BucsFan28 Says:

Judging the pick off of ONE game is absurd and anyone doing so is a moron. CHeck RG3’s first game vs. Luck and tell me which one was better. Now tell me which one you’d rather have. Hint: 2 different answers here

  19. rayjay1122 Says:

It is far too early to say this was a wasted pick on Winston. It absolutely was not the worst #1 pick ever, that would be selecting Bo Jackson after he said he would play baseball rather than play for the Bucs. Winston will not be a bust but his time to shine may not be with the Bucs. Dilfer was a top draft choice of the Bucs who won a Super bowl with a great defense to support his efforts as QB. Same thing with Steve Young. I see the same future for Winston.

  20. King James Says:

    Ouch, But Lynch is correct.

  21. rayjay1122 Says:

Also, no Bucs fans should call an iconic former Buc such as Lynch a moron just because he called it like he saw it.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @The MM bashers

Give it up. 87 keeps getting upset with me if I mention where JW needs improvement. I’ve repeatedly pointed out I’m not a “clinger”. It’s no longer about MM..he is NOT…will NEVER be our QB. JW is the Buc QB for now!!! As long as he holds that position, whether starting or learning behind MG8 he’ll have my full support. He’s a great kid, wonderful competive fire combined with an incredible attitude. I love him, just worried about some physical, and decision making processes he needs to work on. What rookie doesn’t.

But I’m really getting weary of the MM bashing. And it’s always the same freaking crap…MM WILL screw up at some future point!! When he doesn’t it’s always because of luck, or style of play, or dink or dunk, he was the offensive player of the week not because of any possible talent…to hear some on the this blog ANY QB could have done that against Lovie’s defense.

During the draft debate I continually heard he was a system QB with no chance in the NFL. He would struggle learning to take a snap from center or huddling…clearly that was absurd…not just for MM but anybody with enough athletic skill to play QB at a Div I level!!!

So just keep it up because even Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers have off games so yes, I feel certain MM is going to throw an int, fumble, have a bad game.
But you know what…I’m growing weary of waiting for that to happen.

It’s you 87 who is the clinger. You cling to your beliefs that Fameis is clearly the better QB and to make that belief come true you need MM to fail. That’s actually sad. JW can be great on his own!!! He can be great even if MM turns out to be greater. Who cares! If Fameis gets us to the SB isn’t that all that counts. Does he HAVE to be the best QB in the NFL or isn’t it good enough for him to simply be among the better QB’s in the NFL?

  23. Bucco Brice Says:

Jameis had more red flags on him than a nazi march in the 1930’s…Mariota? NONE, except some stupid talk of taking snaps under center…Never thought we could top the Doug Williams, Bo Jackson, Steve Young, Testaverde and on and on bonehead decisions, but this is #1…not even close….”simple as that”…

  24. Louis Friend Says:

108 days until Lovie is fired.

  25. Destinjohnny Says:

Winston won’t be a bust- he will be between 15-20 beSt qb in nfl
    Marcus will be top 3

  26. BrianBucs Says:

On the Buc’s own website, a fan poll was taken just before the draft and the vast majority of Buc’s fans chose Mariota to be drafted over Winston. So I’m not surprised by all of this backlash. But the Titans were smart enough to draft Mariota and he will do very good things for them for a long time.
Evan though the selection will be debated for years, Mariota is now a Titan, Winston is now a Buc, so it’s time to accept that and move on.

  27. I know why Says:

Add Jon Gruden, Bill Polian and Mark Dominik who could also march out and say I told you so prior to the draft.

  28. tdtb2015 Says:

Don’t worry Bucs fans. Jameis is going to show Brees who’s top dog in the NFC South. Brees will be so impress, he will provide Jameis some Cajun crab legs after the game!

I didn’t know Dungy wanted Marcus Mariota. Max you are sooooo right. lol

  29. bucrightoff Says:

It’s one week, if the stat lines reverse this week it’ll be more over the top hyperbole the other way.

That said, I think it’s clear Mariota is better suited to 2015 NFL football where getting the ball out quick and with accuracy is more valuable than being able to stand back there and make multiple reads. Really hope Jameis can improve his release, just too slow right now, that first pick being a clear example.

  30. I know why Says:

In fact Joe, if I remember, Dominik was the first to say it on BSPN and this message board blasted him! Ha

  31. Mo_Downs Says:

    @Max Says,

I don’t agree with your “theory” about “White America” hating Jameis. I think his negative off-field headlines combined with a propensity to throw picks tends to explain most of the “justifiable” apprehension about Jameis.

The off-field issues and the picks can be corrected. But, Mariota didn’t have either problem on draft day. And, now it would seem that it still isn’t a problem for Mariota. Players play and coaches coach.

Last Sunday, regardless of the PR/BS and homer headlines and analysis, the Bucs COACHES got their collective heads handed to them for reasons that have already been published.

    Adapt or Perish…!!!

This Sunday is the proverbial “2nd Chance”. To be clear, if there is no sense of urgency from the top (It’s just 1 game?) then there will be no sense of urgency (do or die) from the players.

My eternal faith in Lovie is wavering. And that’s coming from one of his biggest CHICAGO fans.

  32. crazy Says:

The MM difference would have been a different style of play for the offense. Win or lose it would have been more exciting than what we’ve seen so far with Winston. With Winston at QB a team can’t fall into an uptempo high scoring competition. The running game and the defense have to keep the uptempo quick strike offenses on the bench or the Bucs back themselves into depending on low-percentage big plays to save the day. Winston will be fine but not until the defense can control the other team’s offense.

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bucfan37 on lynch I am with you on that…he is a very smart player but just another player who succeeded with a ton of great players around him and definitely not hall of famer, I do think simeon rice is a hall of famer and the first of the new hot commodity of edge rushers

  34. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The Mariota episode is over. Let it go. Winston will be ok, but it will clearly take a while. He will be probably start playing at a decent level long before they get the Oline fixed anyway. Or get a pass rush, or coverage or…..

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Thank you Joe for providing a place for the Mariota clingers to vent. You should have did this on Monday.

  36. DB55 Says:

Jameis is no bust, he’s been winning since he was in the womb. And not just sometimes this kid has a history and resume of winning all the time.

It’s Lovie and the “leaders” (except LVD and vjax) of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers that are busts.

All I know is Brees will be starting in 100% of FF line-ups this week.

  37. nate_tweetz Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

I’m glad your supportive of Jameis, but you act like doubts about Marcus Mariota were completely unwarranted. Traditionally, QB’s that run the spread offense in college light up the scoreboard but do nothing in the NFL. What other Oregon QB has made the transition? What other spread QB period for that matter? Tebow? Manziel? RG3? Kaepernick? Not really. Tannehill may be one example of a spread QB that is average.

The doubts about Marcus were legitimate because there are few, if any, examples of that kind of QB doing well. Yes, QB’s like RG3 may do well for a season with their one-trick pony offense, but as NFL teams catch on, that changes. Jaws was ready to put Kaepernick into the Hall of Fame his first year under center, now look at him. Marcus may defy the odds, but to insist he was a no-brainer pick is ridiculous. Yes, Marcus had a good game. Let’s hold off on calling him the better QB. There are far too many examples of where that’s happened and looks foolish later.

  38. DB55 Says:

As for the Ducks offense you see how well it played out for chip and the eagle vs ATL.

Mariota will end up like Jake Locker by week 8. You seen what happens when he gets pressured he throws pick 6s (ps vs ATL) and fumbles into the end zone.

Any competent coach will tear that offense apart. Start by jamming receivers that should take care of it all. Too bad Lovie doesn’t coach the jamming of receivers.

  39. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Dungy’s son Eric played at Oregon, he saw first hand his talent. Intern Eric saw Marcus on his visit to Tampa, hugged him like they fought in Iraq. Rodney Harrison also said to take Marcus, he played with Ryan Leaf and sees Winston as the next Leaf!

Dumb and Dumber 3 starring Lovie, Jason and Shameis!

  40. rayjay1122 Says:

    @nate
I think you have misunderstood StPeteBucsFan. He has always been in support of Mariota and accepted and supported Winston when it became clear that the Bucs were going to take him. There were several of us in that situation.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

The clingers better get this over with now. Because on Monday I have a feeling I’ll be talking about what Clevelands defense did to Mariota and none of them will be around.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

    rayjay1122 Says:

“accepted and supported Winston when it became clear that the Bucs were going to take him.”

You say that while he skates on a very thin line everyday…

  43. The Buc Realist Says:

John Lynch is no Hall of Famer!!! ring of honor, yes

The only other that will make the Hall of Fame from the great Buccaneer teams of the past is, My favorite player Rhonde Barber!!!!!!!!

  44. Jeagan1999 Says:

Come on Max! Can’t we disagree without being called haters or racists? Are you that insecure in your beliefs?

  45. BrianBucs Says:

    1987

No offense bud, but the biggest clinger on this site is you.

Stop clinging on those things that Jameis did at your old school FSU. He’s in the NFL now . Those FSU things don’t mean squat. Keep watching those old FSU highlight reels all you want, but they are nothing more now than entertainment

  46. rayjay1122 Says:

I am not saying after 1 week of play that Mariota is great or that Winston sucks. If we had of taken Mariota and the Titans took Winston, then the score and results most likely would have been about the same. The biggest issue is that the Bucs defense laid an enormous egg and should return a portion of their pay to the Glazers as well as perform community service to pay retribution for embarrassing an entire city. I liked Mariota for his quick reactions and fluid motions. He seemed to me to process the game and play faster than Winston in college. I liked Winston better for his charisma, leadership and arm strength and having what I felt along with many others as an “it factor” and perhaps he does but our defense has an “it factor” also but the SH is silent.

  47. Alphonso Says:

You people kill me how you say Marcus mariota has adapted to the nfl. I mean first of he didn’t complete a pass past 15 yards and when he did he was inaccurate . Secondly get off of Marriota nuts for once and realize that he didn’t once go through at least two reads and get the ball. Do you know why because his first read wasn’t there. And my last point is Marcus Marriota has no other choice than to play Oregon type of system because let’s face he can’t drop back go through his progressions and get rid of the ball. That’s just not him. Basically his ceiling is a Alex smith 2.0(because he has better legs) other than that I see nothing else. I mean his bottom is RG3 in terms of trying to make him a pocket passer 2-3 years down the line and that’s not what he is. Oh quick stat in shot gun Marriota was 13-16 dropping back from under center he was 3-6 for 50 yards.

  48. Jeagan1999 Says:

Everyone knows that I was a vocal Mariota supporter before the Draft. That being said, I think Winston can also be a fine NFL quarterback…in time. The reasons I was more into MM were on full display last Sunday…accuracy, athleticism, and ball security! He looked NFL ready. Jameis did not! But it was one game! Winston is our guy and I support him…as long as he doesn’t make the same mistakes game after game after game!

Would I have drafted MM over JW? Absolutely! But that’s water under the bridge now. I don’t think the Bucs will win many games this season, but I look forward to (hopefully) seeing our young signal caller improve and get more comfortable over the next few games! If he can’t, then it might be better to turn the offense over to Glennon until JW catches up.

  49. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

MM will throw 2-3 picks versus cleveland this week and hi stat line will be 13-35 fo 140 yards………RELAX…winston will be fine…this is what rookies do…teh ONLY difference in Mariotta v Winston…or Luck, Manning, Favre, Ryan, etc is not one of them faced that crappy ill prepared non assignment tampa 2 Lovie defense.

I still have feeling bucs win this week despite lovie and because of Jaboowins

I am a Gator fan too

  54. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Nate

What other Oregon QB has made the transition?

Of course during the draft debate the counter argument was what Jimbo Fisher QB has made the transition? It’s a specious argument in both cases because the same size is simply too small. Most college QB’s from any program, any conference do not make it.

I NEVER called an MM selection as a no brainer. My posi.tion during the actual debate was that BOTH QB’s showed great POTENTIAL..and that both will probably be successful in the NFL. I still believe that.

When I was concerned about JW’s off field activity I took a close look at MM. People were just spouting nonsense on this blog as some continue to do.
He’s not comparable to RGIII or Kaepernik…his game is far more stylistically compatible to Aaron Rodgers or perhaps Russell Wilson. Guys who CAN run but do not unless that’s the best option.

My position has not really changed. I still think BOTH QB’s can be really good NFL QB’s. But I absolutely concede that one game doesn’t show us success or failure.

My point is simple!! Dissing MM does NOT make JW look any better…just as anointing MM as great does not make JW look any worse.

JW’s success or failure will occur totally independent of MM’s success or failure.
In the meantime…since we have nothing to brag about as Buc fans could we at least brag about having enough class to salute a competitor who has succeeded instead of sounding like whiny little losers who can’t give another player or team credit because of our own misery.

Bring on N.O. Let’s hope we get three picks off of Brees like last year.

  55. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    same..typo should be sample size

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

The Mariota haters need him to lose this week in order to feel better. It is amazing you all think you can beat the Saints when the Titans defense didn’t do anything great. They even said they played a vanilla defense and didn’t have to do anything to Winston. You talk about pressure on Mariota, but what about Winston? He gets happy feet every time. He is still staring down receivers like he did in college. He hasn’t changed his game he just isn’t playing in the ACC anymore. He always starts slow, would be surprised if he did start fast. However, starting slow loses games. Especially when you spot the team 6 pts on your first throw. It’s going to be a long year. Maybe we can win 2 games. However, Winston has to win 5 or more. I mean Glennon won 4 his rookie year and he is a 3rd rounder. So a #1 pick shouldn’t have a problem doing that.

  57. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Denial is a long river.

  58. OneLove Says:

Let’s look at the FACTS!! Mariota has WHOOPED Jameis TWICE ALREADY!! He made WINSTON LOOK LIKE A B!TCH in college and THEN made him look LIKE A B!TCH in his PRO DEBUT!(Well Winston looked like a B!TCH all by himself, but that’s not the point!!)

The point i’m trying to make is FSU SUCKS!!! I HOPE EVANS can make Winston look good this Sunday because he NEEDS ALL THE HELP HE CAN GET!!

“We need to get better” -Jameis Winston aka “Ryan Leaf 2.0”

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “I should have listened to JOHN LYNCH!”

  59. Jeagan1999 Says:

Why would anyone want Mariota to lose? Unless the Titans are playing the Bucs, there’s no need for it. We’re not even in the same conference! We might be looking at a great rivalry down the road…like Brady/Manning. It’s that kind of rivalry that makes football fun and exciting! So why not root for both, and save the vitriole for Winston vs. Mariota in Super Bowl 55 & 56! Until then, just sit back and enjoy the development of both these exciting young players?

  60. ndog Says:

One quick reminder, John Lynch also said he thought Josh Freeman was the next great qb in the league at one point. Opinions are like a wholes everybody’s got one but most of them produce …….

  61. chris Says:

Got to understand, St Pete, fans like Buc/FSU 87 , are so obsessed with their college team, it makes them put blinders on their favorite qb’s faults. Yeesh, one of email even put down Lynch, who will probably accomplish more in his career than Game is ever will. 40 + pics, reputation as one of the hardest hitters who ever played….” a bit overrated”.

  62. chris Says:

One of em, not email….damn phone

  63. Lord Cornelius Says:

Cleveland just needs to bump those WRs hard and not fall for the play action fakes and it’d make an insanely huge difference.

Those WRs were running free 1-2 seconds off the snap. We should have pressed them and knocked them off their routes. If you do that and have guys sitting in the right zones he won’t have his 1st read running wide open and will actually have to play QB like the position is normally played in terms of going through reads and having to actually deal with pressure.

We didn’t make him go through any progressions or feel any pressure at all. We didn’t make him beat us we just gave him the easiest reads within their system. THe times that he actually did have to take more than 2 seconds to pass we typically had the best results with sacks or incompletions. It’s not rocket science

  64. The Buc Realist Says:

    @ndog

He also said that Mark Barron was the next great Buc!!!

John Lynch is no Hall of Famer!!! ring of honor, yes

The only other that will make the Hall of Fame from the great Buccaneer teams of the past is, My favorite player Rhonde Barber!!!!!!!!

  65. jj Says:

nice max, pull the race card. very weak dude.doesnt matter what race he is. he is just not as good as Mariota . remember all the bs from joe and all the fsu fans how Mariota was a long term project and Winston was ready now.its the exact opposite. I hope Winston improves, but Mariota has much better machanics, better realease. much more athletic. White America ? Cant you just admit he just didn’t look on the same level as Mariota , or mabey the haters made him look so bad

  66. Lord Cornelius Says:

“During the draft debate I continually heard he was a system QB with no chance in the NFL. He would struggle learning to take a snap from center or huddling…clearly that was absurd…not just for MM but anybody with enough athletic skill to play QB at a Div I level!!!”

I honestly wasn’t worried about MM taking snaps from center or calling plays. That’s easy I figure honestly.

What I worried about was what will happen when he has to go through progressions in a traditional sense when there is actually good coverage and his first read isn’t wide open within a few seconds of the snap. At Oregon he struggled in those situations typically much moreso than anything else. There were stats that made it incredibly obvious his numbers took a huge dive when he had to throw to his 2nd read or 3rd read. He also struggled in closer games with a losing record. And he struggled in obvious passing situations when the D knew that was the situation.

Nothing has changed with my concerns after week 1. He essentially played the Oregon offense against the Bucs and was able to get his passes off to his first reads 90% of the time and they were open in a college sense of wide open. NFL defenses should not allow ANYONE to be that open that much but that was like a historically bad performance by Tampa.

He might still be able to be Aaron Rodgers and go through reads and convert on obvious passing situations and deal with a defense that takes away the zone read. But I haven’t seen it yet. Not saying he can’t do it. But those were my concerns and still would be my concerns.

  67. ATrain Says:

Why do some of you on here call someone stupid or throw the race card anytime someone does not like what Winston did on Sunday or don’t agree with you about him being a good QB..

Talk Facts and leave the politics to the idiot in D.C.

There is a lot of Facts for and against this young man.

Strong arm , did very well in college

However a lot of INT’S and forcing the football does not work at this level…

    DANG talk FOOTBALL!!!!!!!

  68. nate_tweetz Says:

    @StPete

How is RG3 and Marcus not comparable??? They ran the SAME offense. I’m sorry , but Aaron Rodgers does not run the read-option. Yes, he plays more spread, but they do not use Aaron as a read-option threat. I don’t hate Marcus. I don’t want to sound like I do. I just think comparisons to Aaron Rodgers are a joke. Mariota did not have to do any running last weekend because the Bucs were so bad against the run defense (bad everywhere really). If a team shuts down the greatness that is Bishop Sankey and they force Marcus to pull the read and run, he is going to get creamed! The way to beat Marcus. Stop the run and take away his first option. Also, hit him when you have a chance to. The Bucs did NONE of this last week. Other teams will. Jameis has a LONG way to go no doubt. But I still think in the end he will end up being better long term. I may be wrong and I’m fine with that if I am.

  69. Bo Says:

Y’all go be Titan douchers then…We didn’t need you jumping on the bandwagon in the late 1990’s and guess what? We don’t need you now!

  70. BoomBoomBoom Says:

Even if Winston puts on a show in NO this weekend and the defense plays worth a damn (not holding my breath)…the clingers will just turn the convo into how much better Mariota is than Drew Brees!!! It won’t be about Winston learning from his mistakes and getting better. It’s a lose/lose situation regardless what happens.

  71. jj Says:

rgIII did not set a nfl record for completion percentage and TDs. hope jamis and the team can rebound this week or its going to be a painful season

  72. Lord Cornelius Says:

“The way to beat Marcus. Stop the run and take away his first option.”

Exactly. Honestly just the take away his first option would be huge.

    1. Don’t bite on play action and stay committed to your assignment
    2. press / bump WRs hard to negate quick pop pass option / 1st read option
    3. = actually force him to go through progressions = more time in pocket = can actually pressure him into bad decisions

We did not do any of that. Would have loved to see that adjustment made after the 1st drive but nah let’s just f*cking quit

  73. Joseph Mamma Says:

If you really thought Winston was the better of the two QB’s, then you have no business running an NFL team. Both of the idiots running (into the ground) the Buc’s thought so. They won’t be employed long in Tampa Bay. Winston is all talk, Mariota does his play do the talking. Smart people and platers can figure out which guy will be able to lead better and want to get behind.

  74. joey joe joe jr Says:

For the “know it all” crowd:

You guys really don’t know when it’s good or bad, when it comes right down to it. … And I’m promising you right now, you don’t know whether it’s good or bad. You really don’t know, because you don’t know what we’re trying to do, you guys don’t look at the films, you don’t know what happened, you really don’t know. You think you know, but you DON’T-KNOW, and you never WILL, okay?”

    -Jim Mora

  75. I know why Says:

@ Buc Realist, your favorite Buc player is actually Ronde Barber, (NOT RHONDE) with all your KNOW IT ALL posts and hatred thrown around at least spell your favorite players name correctly.

I am not surprised, but thought I should start to correct your errors…

  76. Yungry Says:

Its funny how Winston supporters laughed and mocked people who supported the idea of selecting MM, on this site. Its only 1 game and Winston is our QB, who I will support. Some of these internet GM’s will be eating humble pie all year.

  77. Mike Says:

    @Nate
“How is RG3 and Marcus not comparable??? They ran the SAME offense.”

This was one of the fallacies that kept coming up during the draft process. As Jon Gruden and a few others that really dug into the film, kept pointing out, Oregon incorporated a lot more NFL concepts into their passing game than a lot of other Spread offenses. “NFL” route structures, multi and full field reads, progressions, etc. While not the quantity of plays that Jameis had, there was enough film to know that Mariota saw the entire field incredibly well, and could make decisive and quick reads at an incredibly high level. Personally, I think Mariota came out of Oregon’s “system” able to make quick and accurate reads of the defense better than Jameis did coming out of FSU’s “Pro-offense.”

There were of course other attributes that you could easily point to that made him look different than a RGIII or most of the other spread QB’s. Mariota used his legs to first extend the passing play, keeping his eyes down the field, and used the run more as a last resort. Although he didn’t always feel pressure great in the pocket, he stayed there more than most spread QB’s (according to PFF, only left the pocket on 12% of drop back passes, which is good for a supposed spread QB.)

Far to many people stopped their analysis at “oh he’s a spread QB.”

  78. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This debate is getting amusing. The ONLY people here who are getting it right IMHO are those who continue to claim that one year much less one game is not enough time to make an evaluation. I agree with that wholeheartedly.

@Nate….I only remember ONE runnng play for MM. He ran around the left side for a good gain of I believe about 7-8 and quickly got out of bounds. He’s soooo much smarter than RGIII. His game is soooo much more refined. That is the silly comparison.

Quick note on the race card. Shame on you!!! For one thing MM is not white!!!
This isn’t JW versus Timmy Tebow. Race has nothing to do with it!

  79. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Oops…that racecard comment was not directed at you Nate but the toothless idiot who posted earlier up in the thread. I was too lazy to scroll back up to get his name. I should have been more specific and made sure it wasn’t addressed at you, Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

  80. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Its funny how Winston supporters laughed and mocked people who supported the idea of selecting MM, on this site. Its only 1 game and Winston is our QB, who I will support. Some of these internet GM’s will be eating humble pie all year.”

I don’t recall many people mocking MM supporters as much as the Winston haters mocked Winston calling him fat / a rapist / a thug / etc. Non one was hurling insults at Mariota they simply defended Winston.

Of course as a MM supporter you’d be in here making your determination of the season based on 1 game lmao.

Also to St Pete – RG3 was incredibly smart or touted as such coming out of the draft. John Clayton said he was one of the most impressive interviewers he’s ever seen during the pre-draft process. Everyone thought he was an elite PASSER after his rookie year. Not just a run threat

  81. Bird Says:

Anyone who calls John lynch overrated or a moron should not be allowed to post on this site. Ask Marshall Faulk who was the hardest hitter in nfl that he ever faced. Shut your damn mouths. Class act too. He wanted to remain in Tampa but wasn’t given that opportunity

  82. bucrightoff Says:

RGIII and Mariota are also different in that one is an over the top egomaniac who was coddle by one of the worst owners in sports, and the other is humble and willing to learn and might have Peyton Manning as his owner in a few years.

  83. Couch Fan Says:

Lynch was a great player and even better man but this shows he has 0 common sense. Judging someone after just 1 game? How long did it take John just to be good enough to start?…. Exactly. It’s senseless try to try predict if we got the right or wrong guy after 1 game. Shame on you Lynch.

  84. LJS4th Says:

HaHaHa to all you Shameis lovers!!! John Lynch is correct… Mariota is and will be better than Shameis!!! Said it from the start and the Bucs deserve what they get, because they went into the draft process with blinders on only looking at the FSU record. Bad footwork, slow, no quick release just add it all up and that is Shamies!!!

  85. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Way too soon to give up on Winston! However the silver lining is this team looks like it’s tanking for the #1 pick again (has that ever happened before…back to back #1 pick!???), so if Winston does continue to struggle and prove his doubters right the next HC and GM can make amends by drafting Hackenberg next year. I am to Hackenberg as 1987 is to Jameis…barring career ending injury I have no doubt that Hackenberg will be the “next Andrew Luck” at the NFL level. So either Jameis improves and the Bucs salvage the season with a promising you QB (win!) or the wheels come off the bus and the next HC/GM hired pick Hackenberg with the #1 (win!)

  86. John McKillop Says:

Look, I was one who wanted to draft Mariota and was laughed out of here many times, one good game does not a career make. Nor does one bad game. I support Jameis as he is our quarterback and believe he will be elite and I believe the same for mariota. Jameis will have uneven performances probably all season, just like Petyton, Luck, Brees, and name almost any other qb their rookie seasons. Unfortunately the nature of the NFL has changed and 1st and 2nd round picks are forced into the line up and it’s sink or swim. Aaron Rodgers sat for what 3 or 4 years behind Favre and it has paid great dividends for Green Bay. In the words Of Aaron Rodgers just relaaaaaaaaaax! I know it is not easy. Go Bucs!

  87. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    Young QB ^^^

  88. The dog Says:

Please go to the Titan’s web site and talk about MM.

  89. Michael Whelan Says:

Its just as well as Tampa didn’t draft Mariota, because Lovie won’t have enough sense to put in the Oregon offence. He would have had Mariota killed like Winston is getting.

  90. mark2001 Says:

Tony suggesting Mariota……as did Gruden…..Now Lynch says he is the man and he is the bad guy…. how is it that we ignore the experts and let others convince us whom to draft….business as usual in Tampa the last few years.

Hopefully JW will end up being a great QB…..but last Sunday wasn’t encouraging.

  91. Danati74 Says:

Im a Florida St. fan….so you can only guess who I wanted the Bucs to draft. Now we did. Im not going to get scared after one game. I don’t put it all on Jameis shoulders,….not yet. As the team knows,…he’s still a rookie. He will need room to grow. Just like most rookie QB’s. Im not saying or hoping Mariota is and does bad. Would be nice if they both did good. Would be a good for them both in this draft class. I am happy we got Winston. I hope he keeps improving thou. I hope when we watch this next game he doesn’t look half as bad. I hope the offense as a whole looks good. That would be good for a change.

  92. Mord Says:

It’s way too soon to give up on Winston … but on the other hand, Sam Bowie.

  93. Jack Says:

I can’t believe people are saying ‘I told you so!’ It has been one game!

  94. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

anybody who thinks mariota is better than jamies is an idiot and doesn’t know how to judge quarterbacks. mariota is still an immature quarterback running that college option kiddy play. jamies winston plays real football. jamies has a TERRIBLE offensive line which is the ONLY reason why he is struggling.

Mariota played against the worst NFL defense of all time of course he had a good game. mariota is a bottom tier quarterback, u will see when he plays the browns WHO HAVE A REAL NFL DEFENSE

  95. j Says:

Lol Max. Turning the fact that Jameis is not that good into a race thing. Sad.

  96. j Says:

I like Jameis. He will play us into a new coach and another #1 pick. A mulligan if you will.

  97. THETRUTH Says:

I like them both and think Jamies will be fine in time.

What bugs me is the idiots like self proclaimed expert Ian “does anyone remember you played” beckels. Who says Marriotta can’t take snaps under center and never has and can never learn. He looked dam good to me under center, I’m shotgun , in always he looked like he has the tools and smarts.

  98. just Frank Says:

Joe I loved the days when you were independent before you got radio and buc access. U were honest about your opinions. Now you’re just a mark for 620 and the bucs to spin their Winston agenda as if it was a good pick. Mariota was a clear first choice. He makes good decisions on and off the field. He might not bark out orders like a drill sergeant at the line but there’s other ways to lead. One of them is by example. Winston can’t even get out of the way of his own feet. and his example as a person is as good as his footwork.

Winston will be a failure and if you have any credibility left you will just be honest and say that you see it too. He’s nothing more than a Josh Freeman who won a national title and a heisman.

  99. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Dusthty Rhothdes Says

    “John Lynch is a moron…”

    LOL!

    Not there’s showing absolute ignorance!

  100. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Winston will get it. Eventually.

    Mariota will get it. Eventually.

Mariota had one good game. Only one other QB did as well in his first game, and it sure wasn’t a sign of things to come.

He’ll struggle. A lot. Both of them will.

  101. Joe Says:

@Just FRANK – That has to be the silliest comment Joe has read in a while.

The Bucs’ organization was talking playoffs in November while Joe was writing a DAILY Jameis Watch article. If that doesn’t quash your ridiculousness, then you need to wake up.

  102. White Tiger Says:

Let me start by saying I 100% AGREE WITH JOHN LYNCH.

This is why you can’t let FSUfanboys define the debate about The Next ex-America’s QB-of-the-freakin-future…they picked THEIR favorite QB without ANY understanding of what was needed at the next level. It doesn’t mean I don’t think kid fameis will eventually find his stroke in the NFL – it just means I was right about the amount of time I (and my fellow members of Buccaneer fandom) was willing to wait before our offense would be relevant.

I can believe some of you FSUfanboys were lulled to nirvana by the flashy marketing job done on your Fave-O-Rite QB in the whole world. I argue with you, I accurately NAILED YOU as misled sheep/simpletons…but you’re not who I was angered and turned-off by. It’s the absolute MORON the owners put in the front office.

It’s like they never learn!? They are so smitten with Belichick that they probably PAY him to give them advice. Please, for the love of all that’s holy – STOP taking advice from the guy who gave us coaching legend Greg Schiano…he of the moron-side of the Schiano coaching tree…

I can’t believe Licht thought he would get away with drafting the ONLY dropback QB of the future – in this draft. He knows the QB of the future didn’t have adequate protection in front of him to take 7 step drops (translation for college fanboys: dropback QB’s need MORE protection because they are IMMOBILE). Seems like someone could have asked “hey, shouldn’t we have an offensive line before we draft an immobile, dropback, QB…?”

The reason I didn’t (initially) want Kid Fameis is – because his particular talents would NEVER be realized without having tremendous & aEXPERIENCED athletes at LEFT TACKLE, GUARD and CENTER. The Bucs start two rookies and a castoff at those very positions. FOR ANY FAN THAT HAS FOLLOWED THE NFL FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME – IT WAS OBVIOUS JAMEIS WINSTON DID NOT HAVE ADEQUATE PROTECTION IN FRONT OF HIM TO LEVERAGE HIS TALENT.

Again, that’s why the GM can’t be allowed to escape from the heat of the current problem. I believe Jason Licht is THE problem. He’s just another former Patriot trying to duplicate what he believes is an obvious recipe for success.

I believe Jason Licht to be just another no-neck, gumbah, meathead – if he thought this area would sit back and let HIM lose for 2 MORE SEASONS while he assembled an adequate line. That would not be new – look how many assistants & coaches have been lured away from New England thinking THEY escaped with Bill Belichick’s Patented Secret Formula For Football Success. The list is ling, but NOT successful. Most end-up BACK in New England, working at a reduced salary.

If it was just as easy as” “build an offense around a really good dropback QB and/or a powerful defense (preferably a 3-4), any or ALL of his former assistant, coordinators, and coaches would have SOME success. NEWSFLASH: NOT A SINGLE FORMER BELICHICK ASSOCIATE THAT LEFT NEW ENGLAND HAS EVER BEEN SUCCESSFUL!

Apparently Johnny No-Neck (aka Jason Licht) missed the part of the recipe where Tom Brady stepped into success because NEW ENGLAND HAS ALREADY BUILT AN OFFENSIVE LINE TO PROTECT DREW BLEDSOE! (The NFL’s first $100 million QB)..

…Peyton Manning’s Left Tackle (Tarik Glenn) was drafted the year prior to him arriving. Manning’s starting offensive line: A 1st round (19th overall pick) left tackle, and 3 rookies. Not surprisingly, Peyton had great numbers but only won 3 games in his rookie season…

I felt Mariota offered the best opportunity to become immediately relevant – not because he was a running QB (as ALL of you NOW know, too) – because he complimented the type of talent that was already here, and could be attained in the draft. I “felt” this way – because I have experience AND talent. See, college teams no longer teach offensive linemen the fundamentals necessary to protect an immobile, QB who needs a 5 to 7 step drop to allow the vertical passing routes to develop downfield. They don’t teach this, because they disregard QB’s with a dropback skillset. They are busy teaching them ZBS schemes that compliment the various spread attacks out there – which by the way are being used because of their simplicity and ease of installation. A quick study of Buccaneer coaching history and the rapid disillusion of the fanbase that erodes into fan disloyalty – shows THAT (spread-set formation) would have bought the GM and coaching staff more time – and victories – while assigning the delayed stardom of kid fameis to the Titans.

I also thought that the spread-set would allow Mariota to evolve with the game. As he developed his (obvious to ALL now) HUGE upside – his talent would allow him to develop that upside in ANY NFL offense. I felt (and am being proven correct) that young kid fameis was a one-trick pony that would demand a LOT of money to develop & maintain (and I’m just talking ON the field). He would need to have a mountain at left tackle, agile as a panther, and as big as a sherman tank – and those types are rare. He would need a road grading guard that possibly also played a little tackle in college, and he’d need a smart/savvy center who could make the appropriate protection calls at the line as well as lend a hand on the side from where the defense is sending the heat….but who could also get upfield and block for a running game.

There’s a reason there are only two dropback style QB’s anyone can quickly identify in the NFL (Peyton Manning and Tom Brady). It is because they require SUCH a HUGE commitment in resources to build & maintain their WALL OF PROTECTION. It was no coincidence that each QB got to develop in cities where the ownership keeps coaches in place for long periods of time. Virtually no player or fan revolts to deal with or to the threaten the power of the head coach. The QB can weather the periods when injury to one key offensive linemen – can lead to too many hits to the fragile/slow QB – lending to high rates of injury to the QB. This can determine the outcome of an entire season…and when your team also DESPERATELY NEEDS a rush end on defense, you can’t have spent the bank on the offensive side of the ball.

Now, you ALL understand why you don’t commit to a very talented one-trick pony.

He’s a sitting duck right now.

  103. ron Says:

One game doesn’t make the season. Come back in a couple of years and then see where they are at.

  104. bucsbedabest Says:

White Tiger Says – Your post is dead on about Licht drafting an immobile, dropback, QB in Jameis Winston. Without the support of a wall of protection needed by our OL. I keep noticing how uncomfortable Winston appears and that he just does not have the confidence he had at FSU. The reason is the play of the Bucs OL. I completely agree with your comments on Johnny No-Neck (aka Jason Licht). I have serious question marks with all of his draft picks other than Mike Evans and ASJ. Look at Sims, Edwards, Pamphile and Herron? Now Winston, Smith, Marpet, Alexander, Bell, Clay and Iosefa? With Smith and Marpet you have to consider Licht passing on Jake Fisher, TJ Clemmings, AJ Cann, Tre Jackson, Jeremiah Poutasi and Mitch Morse? Winston is our QB and if he is going to be successful draft more OL next year and grab Trent Williams and Marshal Yanda in FA.
