Mind-Numbing Quitting Comments From McCoy
September 17th, 2015Joe tunes into the Buccaneers Radio Network every weeknight for an education. Players and coaches hop on WDAE-AM 620 and expose their minds a bit.
It was there on Monday that Joe learned of the Bucs’ collective mental collapse after one snap. One snap!
Last night, via a take that sent Joe scrambling for cranberry juice and Ketel One, Gerald McCoy said that quitting could have been expected late in the game against the Titans — on opening day, in front of the home fans.
“Coach [Smith] said, ‘If you keep watching the film. You always try and find something good in the film,'” McCoy said. “One thing he showed us at the end of the game was how hard everyone was playing. You would think that when the score is like that guys are letting up, or stop doing their job, or just give up, but that didn’t happen.
“We [saw] a lot of good things in the film. The score wasn’t good, but there are a lot of good things in that film. You take the good things from the film and you build off of that, instead of focusing on the negative things. A lot of negative in the game, obviously, how many points we gave up. But there are a lot of good things that the untrained eye would not see, that professionals inside of the building, the players the coaches that do this, that we see, that we can build off of.”
Wow! Joe can’t fathom how a player could ever imply that “letting up” or a collective “give up” could be expected on opening day. And McCoy is the face of the franchise and team captain.
Joe’s almost starting to feel bad for McCoy and David. The incessant losing is doing something to their brains.

Jameis shouldn’t worry about being a leader though. He should just sit back and enjoy being a rookie. McCoy is soft IMO.
September 17th, 2015 at 6:16 am
You have to perform to lead. Otherwise guys will roll their eyes after your pick 6 puts the team in a hole
September 17th, 2015 at 6:19 am
Thats right GMC the level of effort and intensity was the same on the third play of the game through the last. Piss poor, but you are right nobody gave up at the end of the game. They did that in the first quarter. Thanks for reaffirming the fact that you are not a leadet and never will be.
September 17th, 2015 at 6:20 am
Smh at McCoy saying if they win this week fans won’t care about last week. No I’m pretty sure im not going to forget about last week or any of the other home games the last two years I wanna go to a game and watch a g damn win
September 17th, 2015 at 6:41 am
Since Gruden, Kiffen, and especially Marinelli left it seems giving up is now part of this teams identity. There is no other way to explain the blowouts not only last week but going on for years now. Pro teams all have good athletes so blowouts should not happen as often as the early days. The NFL has done everything it can to keep teams at least competitive. I remember a stormy night when Grudens Raiders took Dungy’s Bucs to the wood shed, but I can’t remember many games that either of these coaches lost big. Hardy Nickerson can you help us out here? You changed that way of thinking and helped give us a decade of good football.
September 17th, 2015 at 6:42 am
Press conferences are believe are mandated by the league, but I almost wish they would put a ban on radio shows (not WEAE’s fault), just tired of the talk, wanna see some action, wins consistently, then we will listen, ijs, imo. Sometimes, you want just say shut up, enough already, don’t get me wrong I like our players, but sometimes I rather not hear them if I don’t see them.
September 17th, 2015 at 6:43 am
Same point I have made before. The so called “leaders” on this team have no idea how to win on an NFL level. It doesnt help that the defense is in an out dated scheme and everybody knows how to exploit it. Im thinking its gonna be a long, sad season.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:01 am
I’m sure McCoy was helping opposing players up just as much in the 4th quarter as he was in the 1st. I’m sorry but McCoy is part of the problem on this team. All talk and no action. Another paper champion.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:11 am
Jesus Christ all their talk is so frustrating. They did nothing well in that game. You lost 42-14 to a team that went 2-14 last year. This team looks like the Bucs did in their first year of existence. Stop talking. We don’t want to hear anymore if this BS. You’re not playing well, your teammates aren’t playing well and your head coach is horrible. Just stop talking and keep going out there to get your ass kicked. As soon as this season ends the Glazers need to blow this team up. All front office and coaches need to go. Then look over the team and anyone that doesn’t have heart needs to go. With the first pick in the draft the Bucs need to seriously consider drafting a defensive tackle if one is available. For whatever reason McCoy’s play has slipped, he is not a leader, and he just doesn’t seem to have the heart of a champion.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:12 am
GetaClue is right!!! Almost always the fans will come back after the first season loss. I think Joe said that fans would forget on the 1 hour radio show! But this time was different. I was out walking the dog last night, and I talked to a huge Lovie fan ( we argue about it all the time). But the sheep (lovie loyalist) said to me. ” Its like having a hot girlfriend that can do no wrong, And then she does something disgusting, and you never look at her the same!”
That debacle last Sunday will have lasting Ramifications!!!!
September 17th, 2015 at 7:16 am
We paid this care bear $100 million. 🙁
We should’ve just paid Suh and let Gerald walk in FA.
Wtf is that? I’d rather watch a lesser talent try hard and approach the game the right way.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:16 am
I don’t have a problem with McCoy in any way, and I understand the need to find something, anything, positive after such a humiliating experience. McCoy is one of the few true stars on this team but turning on him is expected. After all, it’s proven that even humans will eat their own if deprived long enough. And this fan base has been deprived, that’s for sure.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:23 am
LOVIES FAULT…”simple as that”…
September 17th, 2015 at 7:25 am
DEEP AT TACKLE, TRADE MCCOY…”simple as that”…
September 17th, 2015 at 7:25 am
Player shows are nothing but but pablum-puking bunk…….kinda like the season opener……
September 17th, 2015 at 7:27 am
Let’s hope that the Titans are just that good and only made the Bucs look bad in every aspect of the game. Haha not a chance.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:33 am
Great analogy realist
September 17th, 2015 at 7:43 am
Our team is beyond pussified.
People didn’t like Schiano because he was blunt, crass, and no nonsense. However, he held these players accountable. Right now, these players are taking plays off to “feel sad” about penalties and what not. FCUK THAT MENTALITY. THIS IS FOOTBALL!! Sorry, but what the hell?
The Tampa Dean of Radio has a blind spot for Freeman and Lovie, too funny, and at least he is consistent.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:46 am
Wow, is this a story implying a GMC expression of tolerance for “giving up” supported by a direct quote about how they did NOT do so??!
The thing that’s more depressing than your “read between the lines” angle on this is the fact that they *didn’t* give up, played their butts off, and yet, still sucked as much as they did.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:48 am
Our players really stepped up late in the game against their second & third stringers. Good thing they didnt let up. I was able to catch that and I am a stupid fan with an untrained eye. Yeah GMC you really have to have a trained eye to catch the good in that game.
September 17th, 2015 at 7:49 am
Realist and his neighbor are right! Last week was different. I will never look at Lovie the same again. That defense is not just an embarrassment to the Bucs, it’s an embarrassment to the entire sport of football. He is making the same mistakes over and over and over again. How many times have we seen first read wide open? He is cluelessly stubborn about his worthless predictable defensive philosophy
September 17th, 2015 at 7:51 am
@mord. My thoughts exactly.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:00 am
Don’t shoot messenger Joe here. I also don’t understand why McCoy would think to expect a let up or give up from his team. He’s obviously seen it too many times. and has come to expect it.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:32 am
Wow, McCoy saw the good but mostly dismissed the bad that stood out like a sore thumb somebody just dropped an anvil on. This guy has a weird upstairs compartment.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:33 am
I found it disturbing that this is what they looked like after maximum effort. In some ways it would almost be better if they had given up because then maybe a better effort could be effective. This 2015 sht show is gonna be scary to witness, especially on this Incompetent Lovie Smith defense.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:34 am
I want GMC to play like the GMC with Directv and stop playing like tree hugging, flower sniffing GMC.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:36 am
Just not good enough! Simple as that GMC!
YOU GUYS JUST ARENT GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN!
Other than a few players here and there who are play splashing, THE PLAYERS SUCK! ALONG WITH THE COACHING!!!
Screw you nonplaying MF’s!! Im sick of this bs…. AND the excuses that follow…smh
September 17th, 2015 at 8:40 am
Some say a high school team could have beat us. That’s a pretty strong exaggeration. But I dont think its an exaggeration to say Snoop or any other part time hobbyist could’ve coached this defense, and installed a better game plan than Lovie did Sunday.
It is going to take more than one shutout to get this taste out of our mouths! That sure as hell aint never going to happen.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:47 am
Not a big Beckles fan, but I am thinking he is right about GMC. He is a captain and is way too soft. He is a mild mannered individual and a nice person and that is great, so was Lee Roy Selmon but Selmon flipped a switch and played like a beast for 3 hours every Sunday which is something GMC does not do. Starting to wonder about LVD too. Hopefully it is just terrible coaching and schemes more than lack of talent since it would take much longer to fix talent issues.
September 17th, 2015 at 8:59 am
I like GMC a lot, but I begin to wonder if he is a luxury we can no longer afford? If we could trade him for a 1st rounder, it might give us the extra ammo we need to retool our O-line quickly. Would our defense be significantly worse if McCoy was replaced by another tackle? Possibly, but I think the value of what he might be worth in a trade could possibly help us more in the long run. Of course, without regime change, would you trust Lovie/Licht with an extra 1st round pick?
September 17th, 2015 at 9:03 am
I’m done drinking the GMC Koolaid… he’s just not that good. The proof is in the stats.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:04 am
@Jeagan1999
I would take that trade in a minute since the whole defense stinks and GMC really does not make much of a difference in games. I doubt anyone would cough up a 1st rounder for him though.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:15 am
Watching the Mic’d up of GMC on the Bucs website is pretty telling. There is no fire in that guy. The most damning parts in my eyes are him telling guys to “relax” when they’re fighting for a lost ball. Relax? Get the damn ball! Then at the end he’s talking to Orakpo about how he wanted more stats. Really? This guy does not possess the qualities of a leader. And he’s not even all that dominant.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:26 am
Gotta agree with those who think now is the time to look at trading him. His value is only going to decline going forward, so if you can snatch a 1st rounder and a roster player for him I think you do it. The attitude there is really cancerous, Lovie needs to be removed and pretty much the whole team blown up. A new coach needs guys who haven’t grown up in a total loser culture.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:28 am
rayjay1122….I think McCoy could be worth a 1st rounder to a contender with a banged up or thin defensive line, or a mid-level team looking to make a jump up. I’d be more worried about how many teams could take on his contract. But I’m really starting to think that it might be time to move on and focus on the most glaring needs on this team.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:35 am
McCoy, the so called leader of Incompetent Lovie Smith’s squad of least resistance, should probably stop telling fans how to feel if they consider themselves “true” and “loyal” fans. It is insulting.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:36 am
If they had just quit playing, then last Sunday’s Ass Whipping would be easier to swallow. But to see on film that they played hard, and still lost, means they just might plain suck.
But then, there was that dominate performance against the Bengals in preseason, so go figure ?
September 17th, 2015 at 9:46 am
The entire Bucs defensive roster is passive or a pass sieve however you want to look at it. Players that have to talk themselves into being angry after another abysmal game will never get it.
September 17th, 2015 at 9:57 am
GMC is not a leader he is just a soft hipster which is fine but move to the back and let others step up….actually probably since goldson left there are no leaders on this team….vjax should be but he cant stand the losing same with mankins…maybe winston is the leader let him lead…GMC move aside
September 17th, 2015 at 10:08 am
People have short memories about recent Bucs rosters where their were real quitters.
September 17th, 2015 at 10:33 am
trade gmc to the pats for a 1st round pick and a player…Easley just went down and they are a contender that is thin up front…GO BUCS!!!
September 17th, 2015 at 10:36 am
Dallas
Real fans know we’re on the verge.
September 17th, 2015 at 10:42 am
I think GMC is part of the problem on defence , he is an infection to other players, Need to trade him and the defence will be a little better, He will not be missed at all, Fire Lovie and Frazier and keep O/C…….
September 17th, 2015 at 11:15 am
Maybe GMC is the root of the problem. Defenses that he captained openly quit on Raheem, they quit on Schiano, and they even quit on Lovie during those blowouts last year. GMC’s competitive spirit is not in the same Universe as Sapp. Can you imagine Sapp quitting? No, he wouldn’t ever do that.
September 17th, 2015 at 12:27 pm
GMC IS NOT A BUC PLAYER , There is a problem with this defence and McCoy and Frazier and Lovie is it !!!!!!! THEY WILL BE FIRED !!!!!!!
September 17th, 2015 at 12:52 pm
@JOE
Has anybody had a chance to interview Hardy Nickerson yet? I’m truly curious as to how somebody as fiery and competitive as him is taking all of this.
September 17th, 2015 at 1:47 pm
THat is a pretty good idea of getting rid of GMC for a couple of firsts, right now he is just the perfume on a turd
September 17th, 2015 at 1:53 pm
Oh my God, I can’t stand that BS. This guy right here! …
Talkin about ‘some good things that only a professional can see?!’ STFU… you know where else you can’t see those “small things”? On the score board, in the record books, in any home game over the past year+, and in a 30 – 70 record.
Bro, you guys SUCKED A$$! You’ve sucked A$$… You’ve only known A$$ $ucking since you’ve been here.
Don’t talk to me about the small things. Talk to me about how you guys are the leagues worst team by 28 points and that you realize practice translates into game day and that you’re going to work your asses off M-F, like the rest of the people in this city do to pay to sit and watch your garbage. Nothing else.
Don’t convince us with your words. Tampa is sick of words.
Show us bro.
Seriously though, shut up.
Show us
September 17th, 2015 at 2:27 pm
Gerald McCoy is the leader of Incompetent Lovie Smith’s squad of least resistance and has the nerve to thank only the “loyal Bucs fans” for their positive praise that conveniently lacks all due criticism. That’s fine Gerald, ask for loyal fans only but don’t expect them to be prideful too. It doesn’t work that way.
September 17th, 2015 at 3:11 pm
I was unhappy with the loss. Let’s see if they right the ship before we give up on our team. GMC may be a soft spoken leader on a losing team but he is pretty good. Give the guys a chance… Lovie should go before GMC. if things don’t work out… Its all in the coaching. Upbeat coaches pump guys up… Lovie is monotone, passive, chill… We need a crazy mofo, who’s mean… What kinda buccaneer just chills??? They kill, rape, pillage and loot the village. Arrrrrr!!!!!
September 17th, 2015 at 4:07 pm
Drywaller Buc…you mean like Greg Schiano?
