Jameis May Be Too Smart

A former Bucs QB dishes on America’s Quarterback.
Yes, Joe is sure by now most Bucs fans have heard that America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, is some kind of football savant. A true football brainiac.
A former Bucs quarterback agrees and believes Jameis may be just too smart.
That’s the word from former first-round draft pick Trent Dilfer who appeared yesterday on “Movin’ the Chains,” co-hosted by former NFL quarterback Jim Miller and former defensive coach and front office man Pat Kirwan, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Dilfer worked with Jameis when Jameis was in high school, and he thinks his intelligence sometimes puts him in a pickle.
“Guys, with Jameis, I am a little biased,” Dilfer said. “I say that transparently. I need to be a little careful here. I think he is one of the smartest football kids I have ever been around. It’s something people don’t give him enough credit for.
“He played the position as a freshman in college the way you are supposed to play the position in the NFL. Now, that gets him into trouble sometimes. He is a unique anticipator. Like he sees throws before they ever happen and it gets him into trouble because his receivers don’t always see them.
“I think the catch-radius of his skill guys [Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson] are really going to help him because some of those balls that he throws early, as you may know Jim, may not be quite as accurate because he throws them so early. The catch-radius will really help him out with that.”
Interesting stuff there from Dilfer, including the seeing-the-play-early stuff. That may be why Jameis threw so many picks as a sophomore, because he was often working with green receivers at Florida State. They weren’t on the same page, so to speak.
The part about anticipating throws is something former Bucs defensive tackle Booger McFarland also pointed out on Twitter before Jameis was drafted.
Oh, and Dilfer also said he expects Jameis to get beaten to a pulp this season.

No QB has ever failed in the NFL because he was *too* intelligent. Receivers like V-Jax have played in enough offenses(Going on 4 with the Bucs alone) to be able to read a defense and know which route to take. Its the QB’s responsibility to be on the same page with his receivers.
I’m excited for Jameis, but can we please stop using this tired “football-savant” angle to describe his every success and failure?

When u are use to QB play of Dilfer, King, McClown, simms, gradkowski, Freeman, griese, another McClown anything is a upgrade. O line just needs to give Winston a chance

All I know, and I speak to many of my Gator friends, is that Jameis is deadly with the game on the line. I don’t expect awesome results in the first half, but with the game on the line, this kid has shown time and time again (in college) that he can and will get it done. Can he do it at the NFL level? With protection, there is absolutely no reason to believe he can’t.

May be true….but the overselling of Winston needlessly continues…..lets let his performance do the talking…we don’t have long to wait.
I am quite convinced that Winston will eventually be a great QB….but he is a rookie on a bad team and we need to be patient….it doesn’t help when we, for months, are being told how great he is on a daily basis that he is great.

I agree with TBBF. But I think the most of that “rookie on a bad team” ugliness will be seen in the first quarter of the season, as our 3 offensive rookies starters get acclimated to the NFL. And since “real football does not begin until November”, Bucs fans could be in for a real treat this year, FINALLY!!
Bucs win Sunday 20-17 by Doug running the ball better than any TN RB (although I see Mariota showing off his legs some); Winston is introduced to Dick Lebeau but shows off just enough to get the job done and not make Bucs fans pine for McCown

Why the incessant need to tell us every day how smart this kid is? He’s not going to be working for NASA anytime soon, so give it a rest. He just needs to figure out how not to throw the ball to the other team.

Too intelligent? That was a pretty unintelligent take LOL. I am more concerned about him staying healthy and that Ankle not being a lingering problem. Also, it is going to be really important for Martin to stay healthy enough to be effective and make defenses crowd the box to stop a hopefully potent ground attack which should create some mismatches in our favor in the passing game. I also see the TE’s being used a lot this season, so hopefully ASJ will find some reliable hands and not get pushed around on his routes by smaller DB’s or LB’s. I know that comment was all over the board, sorry bloggers adult A.D.D, hey look, a squirrel!

This is correct. Some of JW’s picks were clearly on him, but many were not. For example, he was derided for throwing into “triple coverage” on a pass against Louisville, but it was in fact a perfect pass; the true freshman WR gave up on the route, a DB broke on the ball, and that was that.
I don’t know about being “too smart,” but I do worry that he never takes a break and is gonna wear himself out mentally. But maybe that’s silly; doesn’t seem to be a problem for Peyton.

Well, it is on the user end. They don’t reload on Joe’s PCs/Android. Sometimes do on his iPad. You are (also) having reload issues on your Apple product. Do the math.

I just hope jameis is smart enough to know when its time to make a play and when its time to play it safe(throw the ball away or take a sack) instead of forcing a ball in a spot that will result in an int…im a gator fan and the last time we played jameis we made him look like a freshman with him throwing 4 picks…yeah they still won because uf had no offense but he made a lot of throws that shouldn’t have been made…with that said Ive been to a few practices and the cinny preseason game and I must admit jameis has improved every time ive seen him…I think(hope) he will play within the offense and allow his playmakers to make plays and win 1on1 battles…jameis leads the bucs down the field during the 2minutes drill to put us in field goal range..bucs17-titans14…1-0..GO BUCS!!!

Jameis being “too smart” and making throws with anticipation should not be a problem at this level. It is a major positive and is just another example of why he is simply better than other young QBs. When this kid gets dialed in at the NFL – his abilities are going to be scary. (For opposing defenses that is…)

Obviously you do not know s#!% about what you write. I get it, you like to make stuff up. Jameis did not say he WILL face Brady in the superbowl next year liar. He said he plans on playing in the Superbowl. What athlete do you know that does not have that attitude every year? You think he is stupid for having high expectations for himself? As it relates to brady liar, he said this is not a competition between him and Mariota. He is looking at the Brady’s and Manning’s. Do you know why he would say that? Because obviously those two have been the standard bearers for the past 15 years. Its stupid of you to spew hatred with lies. You can dislike Winston all you want, but it is ridiculous for you to lie while doing it.
