Herm Edwards: More Shotgun For Jameis Winston

Perhaps Herm Edwards has inside information?
When Joe last talked to Herm Edwards, the BSPN personality and former Bucs coach had just dined the night before with his good friend Lovie Smith.
That was at the NFL Owners meetings in March. Edwards was talking to Joe about learning curves and the Bucs secondary and a host of other topics.
Last week on 99.3 FM in Fort Myers, Edwards was talking about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and the shaky Bucs offensive line.
“There’s a couple of things you’re going to have to try to help [Jameis],” Edwards said. “Obviously, you want to run the ball. That’s a given. But you might have to put him some more in shotgun. Spread him out. At least he can see it coming. He can see the free runner coming at him. He can get rid of the ball instead of getting hit.
“You look at this and go, ‘Ok, with Evans and Jackson, they can run vertical. You’re going to have to give him seven-, eight-man protection at times.’ And just let it go down the field and hope one of those guys can jump up, catch it and play.”
Edwards didn’t argue the point thrown at him that the Bucs’ offensive line would be average at best this season, and Edwards was factoring in that the O-line would improve significantly in October.
Adjustments for Dirk Koetter and the players will be critical, Edwards said. And he reiterated that shotgun might be best to preserve Jameis because there’s “always a hot [read], where they can get the ball out.”
Joe’s all for anything that keeps Jameis healthy. He’s starting off with a bad ankle and issues letting dead plays die. That’s a combination.
One big X-factor Bucs fans didn’t really see this preseason, in part because of injury risk, is jump balls down field to Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. With those two monsters, the Bucs absolutely need to capitalize on the inherent mismatches.

I have heard we Drafted the most NFL ready QB NOW I hear it will take time for Winston to learn the NFL ways.
I have heard Mariota only throws from the Shotgun… NOW I hear Winston needs to throw from the shotgun.
I have heard Mariota is boring to interview. Now I hear the Media screaming we want to interview him.
Tampa Bay changes its mind every time it blows its nose.
Winston is here….Hope we don’t change our minds cause the choice is made and cant change as fast as Tampa’s minds do.

A Train – I think you’re overstating Coach’s taker here: “But you might have to put him some more in shotgun. Spread him out.” I think that statement points to two things that aren’t necessarily about Mr. Winston NEEDING to throw from Shotgun a majority of the time. But considering how shaky the Oline is and how uncertain the rushing abilities are, Shot Gun may help keep Jameis upright unless and until the OLine plays worth a darn and the Rbs rush for more than 2-3 ypc.
That said, don’t we have to have a reliable center who can actually snap the ball to use the ShotGun correctly?

Starting Jameis from the shotgun position makes sense with the gimpy ankle and his lack of mobility in the 7 step drop. The only really crazy thought is if you are not going to take advantage of his time in college under center…would it not have been wise to have taken the better QB from the shotgun and when spreading people out? Hopefully he stays healthy starting in the shotgun and can play the entire season! The injuries to QB1’s in this league make Brett Farvre’s and Tom Brady’s 150 game consecutive starts for the same team quite the accomplishment!

Being the most NFL ready doesn’t mean it won’t take time. NFL and college are very different.
Winston throwing from shotgun is for obvious issues with the OL. Not hard to figure out.
NFL and all other media always want to interview, nothing new.
Tampa Bay has nothing to do with every out of context statement you made. That was all you.

Surprised Joe never linked an article to how Koetter said they did no type of protection scheming / offensive game planning to counter the rush / blitzes in preseason. That will probably make some sort of difference id hope lol

Since I don’t watch college football, I had to double check on FSU’s performance, now that the savior has left. It seems they will clearly miss him, as his replacement was terrible in his absence.
Everett Golson was only 19-of-25 for 302 yards and four touchdowns, and only led seven touchdown drives.

I’m sure we will see a mix of shotgun snaps, quick 3 step drops, and screen plays to combat the rush.
Jameis himself said that they purposefully didn’t show their blitzing beating safety valves during that drumming by the Browns.

Being the most NFL ready QB does NOT mean he is NFL ready. It means he was the closest to it of the draft class.
Using the shotgun is not because of a weakness in Winston. It is because of a weakness in the offensive line and the assumed ability of them being able to block for him.
Look, I didn’t want Winston over Mariota either, but it is done so we can either constantly find fault, or root for the best results. And, you know…we just might have been wrong about Winston. It DOES happen.

We would have to offer more than the Falcons will offer him…if he even makes it out of Atlanta.
So no league minimum there.
Even so…if we get a shot, I’m for it. Only problem is, we would have to release another good player. We can’t release any of the guys claimed of waivers this week. They have to be on the team at least 3 weeks.
Who does that leave that we don’t need?

All due respect to Herm Edwards (a defensive coach), but I have a gut feel that Dirk Koetter (an offensive coach) has a lot of different tricks up his sleeve to help Jameis survive. Shotgun is probably one of them … when the situation warrants. With his background/experience, I’ve got a lot of trust in Koetter to improve our offense this year. If Jameis ends up on the bench (injury or performance), it’s more likely to be his own fault than Koetter’s.

Since before the draft, I’ve been listening to Chris Landry saying that the Bucs’ and Titans’ fans should expect significant struggles by the QBs this year. I didn’t see anything in the preseason to shake me off of that. I’m certainly hopeful that the Bucs will be less dreadful this year but I don’t think it will be by much. I’m just hoping that the season isn’t over by the end of September, like it was last year.

Highlight reels tell the bad n good now? Highlight reels create a false sense of potential. I’ll take 3 consistently good college seasons over 1 outta 2 everytime.

Shotgun, screen plays, runs and roll out are what I’m expecting to help alleviate the O-line woes. Seem like 10 years or more the O-line have been the issues. sigh.

With so many fans claiming he could walk on water and he was the second coming of the almighty Peyton Manning yes expectations were set extremely high by his supporters. Will he perform up to those standards I doubt it. I have become a fan of Winston but there is a serious double standard. The same problems have existed through several QB’s and coaching staffs, but the excuses are already being laid out as to why he might not succeed. Same problems different day different regime.

Well, that’s only if you don’t know Peyton performed his rookie season. Even the best take some time to learn the speed of the NFL. Let’s just hope he doesn’t throw 28 interceptions, and a 56.7% passing completion rate like Peyton did his first year in Indy.

Number one overall QB picks are going to get the hype. That’s just how the media works, especially these days. I’m glad that he has handled the spotlight well so far. I’m also glad he is not currently using social media. The hype comes to him, no reason to seek it out.
@87 Maybe, but, there’s always hope. Peyton didn’t have VJ and Evans. So, hopefully that makes for a few less picks,
