No Holding Back For Lovie
September 8th, 2015Better be ready, rook. Lovie Smith is throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at you.
Yes, you, Marcus Mariota, spread offense quarterback trying to play in the NFL.
You never saw a linebacker at Oregon like Lavonte David. You never saw a defensive tackle get off the ball in the PAC-12 like Gerald McCoy. You likely never saw a cornerback who can make pics in a bowl game like Johnthan Banks.
They’re coming, and more, Marcus. Just read the words of Lovie.
“As far as what we are going to throw, we are going to throw everything that we have,” Lovie said. “That is what we do each week. We aren’t going to save any ammunition or anything like that. It’s all out. Everything is about this Tennessee game. It’s about us being 1-0 after this first game. Again, we’re not going to hold any players out for the next week. Everything we have, the best we can be, we’re going to see this week.”
Well, two things should be learned Sunday: how well a rookie spread-option quarterback can fare in his first NFL at-bat, or how well a Lovie defense can stifle a rookie spread-option quarterback making his first start in the NFL.

So excited!!! Game week!
September 8th, 2015 at 7:44 am
hopefully it’s not a bunch of lame safety blitzes
September 8th, 2015 at 7:45 am
Banks, how did Banks get thrown in with the others.
September 8th, 2015 at 7:45 am
@joe
Compared to other coaches, Lovie’s kitchen sink is very, very tiny. Could you find a smaller picture for an accurate representation!!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 7:47 am
Mariota outplayed Winston the other time they met. He is pretty good. We’ll see.
September 8th, 2015 at 7:54 am
casual observer:
Actually, it’s pretty well accepted that Winston came away more impressive after the Rose Bowl, even though Oregon destroyed the Noles (at least in the 2nd half).
Feel free to go back and read up on the post game reactions and draft lead-up….I’ll wait.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:14 am
Who is the worst 2-14 team?
We’ll find out Sunday.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:27 am
Alexander will deliver the kitchen sink!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:29 am
Alexander will send Mariotta back to Oregon.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:30 am
Bucs and Titans should each be much improved teams from their 2-14 records in 2014. But it’s not Winston vs Mariota. It’s Winston vs the Titans defense and Mariota vs the Bucs defense. How much each defense has improved over last year will be the key to the game I think. Can’t wait …
September 8th, 2015 at 8:30 am
@Tom
Not to nitpick but we’re not going to find out the best 2-14 team. Those were the 2014 teams. Both of these teams are 0-0.
We have turned over 40% of our roster! We also now have two rookies starting at the two most critical positions on the field..QB and MLB. Two rookies on the OL makes the OL totally different from last year.
This is a different team as I suspect are the Titans. Like us we can assume the Titans have improved at least at one position QB.
In addition we actually have an OC something we never had last year. The Titans have a new and legendary DC in LeBeau.
Every year the NFL has surprise teams. Some teams supposed to be good turn out to be not really all that good, others supposed to be bad break through.
I’m certain with all the turnover and the rookies the Bucs will have some rough bumps especially in the first half of the season. I do not follow the Titans that closely but I suspect they feel the same way if for no other reason than Mariota who will also be better the second half.
This game will be a preview but not the end all and be all of either the Bucs or the Titan’s seasons and it most certainly will not determine the careers of JW or MM.
If we crush them and MM sucks I’m not going to be here like some gloating about how horrible Mariota is…it’s ONE game. I feel the same about JW. If he’s great..fine..but it’s one game…same if he sucks.
Bottom line for me is that I’m very excited if for no other reason than to see how the questions play out. I knew before last year’s kickoff that McCown was a bad QB! He has a long track record. JW may be a bad QB but at least there is the possibility that the Heisman and the National Title were not accidents or simply the product of FSU’s superior athletes.
I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:35 am
It’s time for a Lovie Confidence Poll….Joe……before the season starts……would be good for tracking purposes.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:36 am
Who will bring us the Win?
Martin
Alexander
Brindza
Game ball goes to:
Licht!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:37 am
In Lovie and Licht I TRUST!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:38 am
If you keep saying it long enough you will start to believe your own lies. Lovie said this last year as well. Fans are tired of talk. Just do it. The former spread option QB Mariota hasn’t been running a spread option. Jameis has run more so far.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:38 am
@Casual Observer Just because Oregon won the game doesn’t mean Mariotta outplayed Jameis (far from the truth). Jameis had a very good game, but he couldn’t help that his RB fumbled the ball 3 times and his defense didn’t show up to play.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:39 am
When 2 bad teams play each other it should be as exciting of a game as when 2 good teams play each other.
I have a feeling that living in Chicago will prevent me from seeing the game live unless the network thinks it will be an exciting Game 2 because of the drama generated by the 2 QB’s.
In addition, I refuse to participate in any drinking game based on how many times the network announcers use the phrase “off-field problems” when Jameis starts lighting up the Titans.
Haters, gotta Hate..!!
Go Bucs…..
September 8th, 2015 at 8:42 am
If I were Lovie, I would be focused on how this OL is going to be stopping LeBeau’s scheme and blitzes….
The Rush to 5 wins is about to begin….

“Pewter Lives Matter”
September 8th, 2015 at 8:47 am
It is time for the Lovie (no) confidence Poll!!!!!!!
Bring it back Joe!!!!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:49 am
@StPeteBucsFan … Good post. I’m with you that there will most likely be some rough spots especially in the first half of the season. Lots of new faces and lots of rookies in key starting positions (especially QB and MLB). It’s going to be fun to watch them all grow as a team though. Play sound football, get better every week and win a respectable share of games this season (especially home games) … I don’t ask for much.
September 8th, 2015 at 8:53 am
Time for some wins!!!
Go Bucs!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 8:59 am
@StPeteBucsFan I’m with you !
New season, new guys, new hope !
The game will not be shown here in UK I will have to follow it as I can (NFL.Com, NFL redzone, …).
I’m full of excitation and fear !
it’s the 1st game, it will give indications but even if we loose it it will not mean the season will not be a success or an improvment.
September 8th, 2015 at 9:00 am
@Defenserules
Play sound football, get better every week and win a respectable share of games this season (especially home games) … I don’t ask for much.
Those are worthy and IMHO reasonable goals. I’m with you!
@Joe
Just funnin’ you guys but sometimes I wonder if you guys don’t smile and troll us a bit. Two posts with Lovie as the main focus are sure to bring out all the Lovie love here. LMAO
@TBBF Yeah it’s time for the Lovie confidence poll..at least before kickoff.
It will be fun to see what happens if they run that poll weekly. I think we all know. When we win the poll will be absurdly positive and if we lose it will be just as absurdly negative.
September 8th, 2015 at 9:06 am
@ St. Pete
As to the poll….it would be great to have a reading prior to the season starting…..not telling Joe how to run his site…..just suggesting something that should be of interest.
September 8th, 2015 at 9:16 am
@Mo Downs
I feel your pain. I’ve missed all but one of the preseason games because now that I’m retired I summer in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula which is Pack country.
However I do have Direct TV’s NFL ticket for the first few games before I get back home.
I am in Copper Harbor Michigan about an 8 hour drive from Chicago. Beautiful country if you want to bring the MS you’re welcome to watch the game at my cottage. Cottage is VERY small though so you’ll have to get a room for Sunday night for the drive back to the windy city. We have some Chicagoans who drive up for the weekends..
September 8th, 2015 at 9:31 am
SO to bring this into perspective, what has been Lovie’s best defensive game with the bears? maybe Rams? because if he is bringing the sink, I want to know what kind he is bringing. ANNNDD I hope is not “SINK’ing the season on game one.
September 8th, 2015 at 9:33 am
@stpetebucfan
I promise you that I will vote consistently on the poll!!! I had so much faith in Lovie last year that I took a 3 week vacation ( over seas! ) in the middle of the season, Something I would have never done as I have never missed viewing a single Bucs game!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 9:36 am
@StPeteBucsFan,
I appreciate the offer. I’m going to sign-up for the free trial period of the NFL on-line broadcast so I can see the game.
CBS Chicago is going to broadcast BAL/DEN (?) instead of TEN/TB.
Oh, Well…
Thanks Again for the offer.
Do you think TB can win with 6-FG’s..??
Final Score: TB (18) – TEN (17)
September 8th, 2015 at 10:05 am
I want to see that Delayed blitz Lovie has been dabbling with. It seems to work
September 8th, 2015 at 10:46 am
Lovie’s going to throw everything he’s got at the Titans. Those are encouraging words. This win will show the league these are not the same old Bucs. Defend the home turf! A new beginning in Tampa Bay. Go Bucs!
September 8th, 2015 at 10:52 am
@Realist
As I told Tmax yesterday I enjoy you guys. Three of you who are down on Lovie…you..Tmax..and Dallas always bring solid facts to back your opinions.
As I told him…bring it brother. Contrarians are what make the world interesting.
BTW I was a Lovie hater last year because I believed he was committed to Dungy/Gruden ball…pound the rock..great D..win 17-14 or 10-7.
When he hired Koetter he got my attention. JW and all the offensive players drafted…I’m not really in his pocket…he MUST win at least six this year with what I believe to be 8-8 talent or I join you Tmax and Dallas.
September 8th, 2015 at 11:01 am
@stpetebucsfan
Did you listen to the Koetter training camp interview with the “big fraud” on 620. the scary thing was one of the first things in his job description was to pass along the head coaches message!!! look for the Jags type offense more than what koetter did in Atlanta.
Also we prefer that label of “truthers” rather than “contrarians”!!!!
The buc realist, holding down st pete until stpetebucsfan comes back!!!
September 8th, 2015 at 11:20 am
I think the Bucs just might come out ready to hit someone 🙂 Punch Mariota, Americas sweetheart, right in the mouth!
September 8th, 2015 at 11:42 am
@Realist
I give Lovie/Koetter wide latitude for at least the first 8 games this year. The combination of two rookie OL protecting a rookie QB who seems obsessed with making a play even when it’s not there probably have them scared to death…understandably IMO.
Given that JW is still learning to throw the dang ball away when the play is over, two rookie OL who will struggle in pass blocking but show some promise as mauling mean run blockers and the resurgance of Doug Martin means I’m prepared to see more…pound the rock and let the D do it’s thing.
Eventually I hope that changes but in all honesty given where our talent and experience is this year I understand it,

Given that JW is still learning to throw the dang ball away when the play is over,
———————————
Dear buc fans,
Please note, seasoned hall of fame qb’s ie Manning in the 2013 AFC championship in OT (and many other games before that) threw an int when the play was over to lose to Baltimore. It happens all the time. See Drew Breese, or even Farve who did this numerous times. Please do not over analyze Jameis to the point you take his effectiveness away. Please note buc fans, ints are a part of football. I know we as fans are not use to having a franchise qb and we have only observed franchise qbs from a far so we are under the uneducated impression that great qb’s do not make bone headed plays. We are under the impression that if a QB throws and int and we loose that game then it is the qb’s fault. But please note, the great Manning and Farve and Breese and insert whoever name here all threw/throw ints when they should have thrown the stupid ball away. THe difference is those guys have the talent/confidence within themselves to bounce back from a horrible mistake or as Jameis says “snap and clear.”
The problem is we have never had a qb with this much talent and we are used to blaming the qb for a lost just because he threw an int during the game. We have lost 7 games in a row to the Saints and I bet you Breese has thrown at least 3 ints in at least four of those games against us. Yes Jameis will throw his share of ints, but he will also make he share of big plays. In order to do that, you have to let him play and not ask him to be some type of robot or game manager. Throwing a boneheaded int is not a death sentence. We have had qbs that didn’t make many mistakes but we still only won 4-5 games. Give me a qb with tremendous talent that can “snap and clear” with a never say die attitude and I can live with the results.
Regards,
Tiny
