Bucs Sign Kush, Experienced Backup Center

September 6th, 2015

After the virgin center experience of Garrett Gilkey last year, Joe has learned to embrace the little things, such as claiming a backup center today that has real NFL experience.

The Bucs did that today, snagging third-year center Eric Kush, a sixth-round pick by the Chiefs in 2013. Kush actually started a game at center in 2013! He even played the position in college and preseason.

Keep in mind Chiefs boss Andy Reid and Bucs general manager Jason Licht worked together in Philadelphia.

This Kansas City Star story dives into how Kush was the No. 1 center when the Chiefs reported back to work in April, and how he likes how his body is developing.

As a waiver claim, the Bucs will have Kush on their 53-man roster for at least three weeks. This potentially could spell doom for Jeremiah Warren, the guy Jameis Winston seemed so comfortable taking snaps from in preseason.

Joe’s Jeremiah dream may not happen……

Another small school guy form up my way here in PA. I do LOVE the fact he is a Center, and knows the position. I do wonder about only having 3 OT’s healthy right now.

    Good job Licht!

  4. JAB83 Says:

Awesome… Now Warren can focus on being a swing man on the OL… IE Jeremy Zutah

  5. Carl's Toe Says:

Kush snaps it over his head kettlebell style!

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

How many snaps has this guy rolled??

  7. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    JAB83, or he’ll be cut.

  8. Strider Says:

I hope we get another DE

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bucs must really like Masifilo….he’s survived everyting thus far.

  10. Tom Edrington Says:

Still not sure this team is ready to play.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tom

They’re ready to play….but play well….that’s the question.

  12. Jeagan1999 Says:

He’s started 1 game in his pro career, and lost the starting jog to a 2nd round rookie during training camp. I don’t know that I’d get too excited over this signing. Once again Lovie and Licht scramble to get someone, anyone to fill on on our putrid O-line…that they bear the responsibility for! Jameis better cinch up his chin strap tight…it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

  13. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Any DEs signed yet????

  14. Kevin Says:

Was he a cap casualty or released because he sucks?

  15. buc4life1979 Says:

Cheifs fans thought the guy was a lock because of a solid preseason…Has anybody SEEn this guy?? Dude dam sure atleast looks the part…SRT8 UP solid homegrown putwood country raised. Makes Evan barstooled, beer bellied, bowling ball Smith look like…yeah.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

The hell with defensive pickups. Just keep working on that damn o-line. And by that I mean even with next years first round pick. Keep building that line for Jameis. I freaking telling you. If you give this kid time, you won’t even be worrying about our defense anymore.

Just keep working on that o-line and nothing else.

    Protect Winston at ALL costs!

    Kush-Lash?

Hmmm… need to have some realism/skepticism here. Why was a 2013 draft pick center with one start and game experience who was cut be better than the guys we were developing? Warren seems pretty good as a backup C. Does this guy play G and can he take over if Marpet can’t pass protect for a while or Mankins flat out sucks?

It seems that with two “pure” C’s on the roster, we need a guard more. Or maybe this is part of the process to jettison Evan(formerly known as Dietrich) Smith.

Why are we doing this when we could have spent a pick o 1st round talent Lael Collins from LSU who the Cowboys signed?

I wish Ian Beckles would weigh on topics like this instead of criticizing Gerald McCoy. Even If Meckles is right and McCoy isn’t Hall of Fame material, wouldn’t it be better to criticize the MANY things on the team that AREN’T working at all?

Our personal dept needs an overhaul or we will never win.

  20. Buclife Says:

Our personnel just was overhauled this year lets see what the draft ,free agents and waiver claims do in the regular season before we start complaining. By the way every team passed on Collins in the draft because of the circumstances at the time.

  21. Buclife Says:

    opps personnel dept ^

  22. GhostofSchiano Says:

Datone jones DE from GB…..at least worth a closer look

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

No but we have kept the same scouts

  24. Buclife Says:

Hickey is gone. We added Jon Robinson. Also director of college scouting Mike Biehl was added last May. So our scouting dept has changed. Also our philosophy of hanging onto draft picks even if we made a mistake has changed we move on quick. People don’t under stand this team is starting to build solid depth. We also have changed the way we grade potential draft picks prior to the draft. So we have made changes to our scouting.

  25. Dave Says:

Remember when Joe referred to Mark Dominic as Rock Star??

  26. Owlykat Says:

Maybe they want to try Warren at Guard. He is a 325 pound beast. At least til Masifillo bulks up.

  27. Danati74 Says:

I like the signing.any o-line signing is a plus. It’s gonna be a long season.

  28. Pete422 Says:

Can Jeremiah Warren play guard? I thought he had a good camp/pre-season.

  29. Casual Observer Says:

I think both Kush and Warren will be tried at guard. Depth, hopefully.

  30. unbelievable Says:

    Too bad this guy isn’t a guard…

Then he would be OG Kush !

You see what I did there?
