Bucs Select QB Off Waivers

New Bucs QB Ryan Griffin.
Uh, oh…
Seems the drama torch at One Buc Palace has been lit. The Bucs released the list of players AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht selected off waivers. Among them is a new Bucs quarterback!
The quarterback in question is former Saints backup Ryan Griffin.
Now per NFL rules, a guy claimed from waivers must be placed on the final-53 man roster for three weeks. So what is going on here?
Just three days ago, live during the WFLA-TV Channel 8 broadcast of the Bucs-Dolphins game, Licht emphatically stated quarterback of the past and quarterback of the future but not the quarterback of the present, Mike Glennon, was to stay on the team. Surely the Bucs aren’t going to keep three quarterbacks, will they?
Are they so paranoid about the offensive line they think through America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, and Glennon could be burned through due to injuries?
Now this is sheer speculation but Joe is smelling a trade not involving Glennon. Licht is a smart guy and a popular guy in league circles. Joe is guessing that some other team wanted Griffin but realized they had no shot to get him. Armed with this information and knowing the Bucs/Licht had the first waiver claim, they made a handshake deal and a trade is looming in return for another body or draft pick(s) to use as ammo in next spring’s draft.
Or in the past 48 hours, did Licht receive the proverbial offer he can’t refuse for Glennon?

I think he’ll be put on the practice squad, just in case we do get a offer we can’t refuse for Glennon. Nice move. The 2 LBers we claimed though, not understanding that when we had 1 that performed great, at least to me.

Impossible to know with this group. I had Dominik and Allen figured out, but Licht is a bit of a loose cannon. I cant see anybody giving up much for a backup QB the week before the season.

I think the pickup of the two LB’s reflects L&L’s disatisfaction with our special teams an area of weakness in the PS.
As for QB I like Joe’s theory. It’s not about trading MG8 but rather Griffin or perhaps Lobato.
I’m on board with the BSPN expert who claimed MG8’s value will max right after the season. Teams will look at him and feel they have an entire offseason and next year’s training camp to work MG8 into their system and they basically get a trial run for under 700,000 which is truly chump change for a QB…backup or starter.
We then get to package MG8 with another pick or two and trade up for Joey Bosa!

2013: 19 TDs and 9 INTs, 2608 yds, QBR 83.9
2014: 10 TDs and 6 INTs, 1417 yds, QBR 83.3
Career: 29 TDs and 15 INTs, 4025 yds, QBR 83.7
Easy numbers for Jameis to shoot for.

The reason I hope Mike Glennon gets a chance is simply based on his performance stats for last year as a rookie. (QBR 83.9, 19 TDs, and 9 INTs) which compare very favorably vs. the lifetime stats of all the FIRST round picks of the last 20 years, and NOT just comparing their ROOKIE stats with MG8!
Even looking at the QB’s taken #1 overall in the draft ( 13 players), they have a combined 106 seasons over their careers, but only in 43 of 106= 40.6% of those seasons did that player post a QB rating HIGHER than MG8′s 83.9, and that total includes 14 seasons by Peyton Manning.
Those same #1 overall QB’s threw for 19 or more TDs in only 49 of 106= 46.2% cumulative seasons, but MG8 managed to do that in only 13 games in his rookie campaign.
And in only 20 seasons out of those 106= 18.9% did that QB have a better TD/INT ratio better than MG8′s 19/9= 2.1. Once again, take away P. Manning’s 9 seasons doing that, and you’re left with only nine seasons ever in their career for the remaining 12 players with a TD/INT ratio better than Mike’s last year.
Now for the sarcastic part. MG8 did have an All-Pro offensive line, 60% of whom were inexplicably released and/or traded by by our new regime. He did have an unbelievable running attack and seasoned tight ends, as well as two of the top ten receivers in the league, and got almost all of the reps in preseason and the first three weeks practice during the regular season. Plus he had an unbelievable coaching staff and OC, as well. And just like Josh McCown, he got to play Dallas and Minnesota the 31st and 32nd worst defenses in the league last year, rather than the 49′ers, Saints, Panthers, and other playoff-bound teams who were fighting for divisional crowns and home-field advantage in December.
And finally, one of the most interesting facts I learned, was that of all those 1st round QB’s, 37 of 51 of them (37/51=72.5%) improved their lifetime QB rating compared with their rookie rating.

I will be accepting pats on the back for calling this one!!! Joe Jason L said was MG was aon this team… And as I said than… He made that statement to boost the value of MG at the time… I also said back up QB’s are easy to find in this league and MG is a awesome back up which makes him a starter for some teams… Boom goes the dynomite… Gonna get some nice “potential” guys for this trade… Excellent move by Jason L and company!!!

Not Lobato…..he’s been waived and is wide open to be picked up elsewhere…..I suspect someone else wants Griffin and will give us a pick or trade a player for him….it won’t be long for us to find out….
I really think there is no way we carry 3 QBs on the roster….

There have been 51 quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL draft in the last 20 years (1993-2013). Their AVERAGE performance does improve somewhat the closer you get to the top of that round, but not as much as you might think. For instance, those 51 players have played an aggregate total of 384 seasons (this means that you take the number of total seasons that that player has competed, and add them all up .e.g Drew Bledsoe [#1 overall in 1993] played a total of 14 seasons plus next guy times # of seasons etc.) If I were to pick an arbitrary QB rating as a standard against which to measure their performance, say 83.9 as an example to just pick a number out of the blue…… then there were 120 total seasons where those first-rounders had a rating higher than 83.9 (120/384=31.2%). Please note, this is any season EVER in their career, not just their rookie seasons.
Or stated the opposite way, that means that almost 69% of those seasons resulted in a QB rating less than 83.9, ever in their careers. Looking at the individual players, there were 17 (17/51=33%) who NEVER had a single season with a rating greater than 83.9 in their entire careers!
Let’s also pick an arbitrary number of TD passes in a single season…..oh say 19. Out of those same 384 seasons, only 114 (114/384=30%) seasons resulted in that many TD’s. And 21 of those players (21/51=41.1%) NEVER had a single season with at least that many TD’s. And another 9 players had only one season with as many as 19 or more TD’s. Not even if they played 16 games. The numbers are even worse when you look for seasons with a TD/INT ratio greater than 2.1 (19/9)…… only 57 total seasons out of that 384 = 14.8%…… ANY season in their career, not just their rookie campaigns.

But, Mike Glennon was only 5-13 as a starter.
Compare with Peyton Manning 5-13.
Or more recently, Teddy Bridgewater 6-6 in 12 starts, but he got to play the Bears twice, and even McCown beat Wash, and he got to play the Bucs, the worst team in the league.
Derek Carr 3-13, but with 21 TDs, and only 12 INTs, with QBR 76.6
Blake Bortles 3-10 with 11 TDs 17 INTs, QBR of 69.5.

@tickdr Thanks for the splash of reality. I’ve been trying to find the article on Walter Football I read before the draft.
The draft is always a crap shoot. Your example shows that fact even when it comes to high picks and QB’s.
I recall that 1st and 2nd rounders have a roughly 50% chance of leading productive careers…more than 3-4 years starting in the NFL. That % of course drops as you go down the draft..3rd rounders are not even a 50-50 bet.
I do not recall specific %’s…not sure they even tracked 4th round and lower.
And so all of those anxious to get rid of MG8 for a 3rd rounder are basically saying they are willing to accept LESS than a 50-50 shot we’ll get an NFL quality player in return for a guy who clearly can at least play in the league.
Given our OL and #3’s ankle I absolutely want MG8 on our roster this year.
During the offseason we can trade him as part of a package and move up to get the best DE available. I hold out hope it’s Bosa but that may be a stretch.

No way Winston is out….if so we would have stuck with Lobato….knows the offense.
I will say for me…this is pure agony…..impatience….I know we aren’t keeping 3 QBs….just doesn’t make any sense…..only reason if we have plans to trade Glennon now or later in the season and we want a backup to be ready….
But we are giving up a precious roster spot for that privledge.

I’m pissed that we released rannell hall, I’m hoping he clear waivers but I don’t how and makes it to our practice squad. Injuries happen especially to Murphy he’s always injured. And to release him for a qb. We better be trading Glennon for a DE or oline. Hall is going to be a good wr in this league I know it

I would only trade MG8 for a starting DE or OL. Not a backup just a starter. but w our OL I would be scared to start the season with only #3 and this new guy. I’m sure they have a plan, too bad most of their plans suck and screw us over. Can’t wait til Lovie is gone.
MG8 can play. His stats don’t lie. His win % may not be good but that factors in the whole team. Any team in the league would love a QB with a QBR of 84%

What the stats for rookie qbs dont show is how bad those rookie’s teams usually are. Not to say the bucs had a good team then, but its tough to judge rookie qbs who are on crappy teams. Not to mention they are isually forced to play earlier than they should. Glennon is a smart kid. He was probably more prepared than most rookie qbs coming out of college. But he still sucks.

The Bucs carried three QB’s last year, right? If they plan to trade Glennon and keep Griffin as the 2 then they have zero chance of winning any game that Jameis does not start. They also just replaced nearly 10% of their roster today with players not good enough to make some other NFL team. Does anyone here have a clue as to what Smith and Licht are trying to do here?
We have big receivers and midget ones. Doug Martin is low and quick. Sims runs high and slow. Stocker sucks, ASF cannot block and drops everything. We have a ludicrously patch worked young and washed up OL. We have no DE’s and get a load of our safeties.
What is their plan? What kind of team are they trying to build? Anyone know? They turned their roster over for the second straight year. You cannot win that way. Good luck to us.

And so I’m assuming nobody here is counting on #3 being Andrew Luck this year and leading us to an eleven win season after just two last year.
How about the 2013 Kansas City Chiefs. How did they accomplish the same feat?
They traded for Alex Smith a good but not great QB. And then they turned the roster over big time!!!
I’m still waiting for LuvMyBucs or tickdr or one of our stats guys to tell me exactly what % of this roster is different from last year’s. Exactly how do the 2015 Bucs match up against the 2014 Bucs. I think we can agree that a rookie #3 is far better than Josh McCown!!! The OL is a work in progress but it already looks better than last year.
