Symbol Of Dysfunction Omameh Gets Cut

How does a second-year player who started 16 games last year at right guard get cut from a team that has only one guard on the roster with any NFL regular-season experience at the position?
Patrick Omameh, Tampa Bay’s 16-game starter at right guard in 2014, was cut today. This came after he officially was moved to right tackle in the spring.
So the Bucs’ brass determined Omameh was unfit to play guard. What the heck took so long? Think about it, Omameh started all those games and his film was so bad, allegedly, the Bucs quit on him in favor of Garrett Gilkey this offseason, who couldn’t beat out Omameh last year.
If Joe were the conspiracy type, then Joe would consider Omameh starting 16 games to be Exhibit A that the Bucs strategically tanked to win the Chase for Jameis. But Joe doesn’t really believe that.
The whole Omameh experience is very telling. Hopefully, Bucs fans will be able to laugh about it after Tampa Bay acquires a solid guard on the waiver wire in a matter of hours.
Joe wishes Omameh well, but if he goes on to be a serviceable guard somewhere else, then Joe might just break a skull bone on a blunt object.

A little surprised Masifilo made the cut. They obviously see something in him.
Makes sense they’ll cut a DB when they sign Tim Jennings. Replace Joe’s favorite CB Mike Jenkins? More likely cut a safety. Conte?

Matthew Masifilo was the Bucs highest graded guard at PFF, and Ali Marpet was the lowest. Actually Masifilo should be starting ahead of Marpet, he clearly earned the right to start.

I have a bad feeling that the dysfunction will continue in 2015. No quality starters and no depth. What are L&L thinking? I’ll be surprised if Winston is not on IR by game 4.

Omameh was on SanFran’s practice squad a couple years ago– back when the Niners were good. He was considered a highly rated prospect and a steal be Domenic. Too bad it didn’t pan out.

Dave, I watched every game and every play, and I agree with PFF 100%. Ali Marpet has been the weak link on the o-line all preseason, except for the Bengals game. Lawerence Sidbury should have made the team as a DE. I would go with PFF grade instead of the coaching staff. They see what they wanna see, they have their favorites.But Marpet will get better, it takes time to go from Left Tackle to Right Guard. Especially coming from Hobart to the NFL, it’s a tough task. But I like PFF grading system, they be spot on.

Usually teams only give their draft picks extra time to pan out. It’s Unusual for a team to give a player more chances than they deserve to prove their worth that weren’t drafted by said team.

Yes that took me by surprise as well because Lakeland buc is an excellent poster.
There are simply too many variables for PFF to show any accuracy.
First…it’s the freaking PS!! How do they account for who Marpet blocked and who Masifilio blocked. What % of their snaps came against 1st teamers versus 2nd or even 3rd and 4th teamers.
2nd…who was playing along side of Marpet and Masifilio? First teamers or our second teamers?
3rd. AGAIN it’s the PS we do not know what coaches goals were in mind when each of these guys played.
4th. The sample size of their snaps is so incredibly small. Get back to me after each has had a season worth of snaps.
Let me be clear however. I’m not saying LakelandBuc is incorrect and that Masifilio is not better than Marpet. I’m simply saying NOBODY not PFF knows yet. Our coaches see them everyday so I trust them more than simple stats and computer algorhyms.
Masofilio just switched from DL to OL. He MAY have major upside. No sweat.
IF Masofilio is better than Marpet he can always slide over to replace the aging Mankins when the time comes.

Love the witch hunt Joe. You cut a guy that was played out of desperation last year. Who wasn’t very good and was cut from another team last year for that exact reason. No one has ever accused Omameh of being remotely good (other than your early crush on him).
Some people would call replacing Omameh progress but obviously you see it differently.

PFF is a bad joke. No one knows who is grading these players and what criteria they are using.
Yes, I’m sure Omaneh will go onto to be Pro Bowl player just like Joseph, Penn, Zuttah and Larsen did.
I enjoyed watching all of them play in Hawaii last year.
In reality, both Penn and Larsen played on linez that were ranked almost as bad as the Bucs.
