Kenny Bell’s Season Is Over
September 4th, 2015Per the Twittering of Bucs beat writer Greg Auman, rookie fifth-round wide receiver Kenny Bell will wait until next year to make his mark on the NFL.
Auman says Bell’s hamstring injury has led the Bucs to place him in injured reserve. Players designated for IR are off the 53-man roster for the entire year — while they collect their salary.
No word yet on sixth-round pick Kaelin Clay, the wide receiver/returner out of Utah. Clay had a painful rib injury against the Browns on Saturday night. He didn’t play yesterday.
Fellow undrafted rookie receiver Adam Humphries (Clemson) and Rannell Hall (UCF) are anxiously awaiting final cuts, which are due by tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Last night on the Bucs-Dolphins broadcast, Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, alluded to Humphries being “my Wes Welker” and referenced Humphries spending a lot of time studying at One Buc Palace. Hall was referred to by Jameis as “my Mike Wallace.”
No word on whether anyone has referred to Clay as the next Sammie Stroughter.
September 4th, 2015 at 3:37 pm
Man sometime I miss Sammy
September 4th, 2015 at 3:39 pm
YES! We cut bowers 😀
September 4th, 2015 at 3:42 pm
Damn, that really sucks. We really got hit pretty hard during the last 2 games of the preseason. The silver lining is this should all but ensure that Humphries gets a spot on the roster and I think Humphries could make his presence felt. I’m excited about this guy. Mad Max and myself keep harping on this guy and I know I sound like a broken record but Hump has a chance to really do something. He’s got the tools.
September 4th, 2015 at 3:44 pm
Just noticed Winston said Hump is his Wes Welker and that’s exactly who I keep referring to him as. JW owes me naming rights money.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:11 pm
Kenny Bell must be special to be held over and paid, I don’t remember much in TC except for talk about his big afro hair, and a few catches. I say he cuts his hair before playing for the Bucs. You think the Bucs will keep Humphries and Hall? I’m not so sure.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:13 pm
I have been picking Humphries all summer to make the team, I don’t know about Hall. It depends on the waiver wire, they may go with 5 WR.It depends on a lot of things, especially who is available on waivers.I’m looking for some more suprises.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:16 pm
This is the new way to stash young players so they are not exposed to the wire. More and more teams use this to stash young talent, who might not be ready. Not a bad move for the Bucs. Now they can keep Humphries who should get more time on the field.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:24 pm
@cmurda, we better keep Humphries, especially after the way he played last night. Good luck trying to cover the 3 towers VJax-Evans-ASJ plus this little explosive catching machine Humphries.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:35 pm
I’m glad they were able to find a way to keep Bell and give him a chance to develop because at this point I couldn’t see him making the team. My top 6 is Evans, Jackson, Murphy, Hall, Shepherd and Humphries and they may only end up keeping 5 of the 6.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:37 pm
It’s nothing new Hiding players on IR. The Niners really abused this rule back in their hay day in the 90’s.
Here is Trent Dilfer pointing it out to a righteous Steve Young. His face is priceless.

September 4th, 2015 at 4:39 pm
Humph had a great game but so did Hall who actually ended up with more yards.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:51 pm
Yes, hiding players on IR has been going on for 30 years or more. I remember a former Buffalo Bill coming to my middle school to talk about integrity and mentioned that when he was a rookie they asked him to fake an injury so they could put him on IR.
Basically Kenny Bell would’ve been cut if the Bucs were taking their top 53 or they would’ve had to keep him at the expense of a receiver that was better. So they “put him on IR” due to his “hamstring.” Which…you know, WR’s injure often and are rarely ever out for more than a few weeks.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:51 pm
“YES! We cut bowers ”
——–
That’s really tacky. How would you feel if you got fired and someone said “yes, I’m happy you got fired?” I get it you don’t think he’s a good player, neither do I. However, he’s a man trying to make a living, and it’s pretty childish to dance over his being out of a job. Stay classy!
September 4th, 2015 at 4:52 pm
More and more teams use this to stash young talent, who might not be ready.
Agree completely Thunderchunky.
Here is my question for you CBA experts. So he’s on IR and can’t play for us this year. I suspect that means since he’s “injured” he’s not allowed to practice.
Is that assumption wrong? And even if he’s not “permitted to practice” is there anyway they can sneak and work with him as in coaches and Seth Lobato or whomever the PS QB might be tossing his some passes. I feel pretty sure the trainers can set his workouts since he’s rehabbing. Is he allowed to study video?
IF he can do all of these things this could be a true blessing for Bell. He may come to camp next year really prepared.
September 4th, 2015 at 4:56 pm
@Hawaiian Buc
If you think that’s bad, listen to this:
I cheered when Bowers went down.
Not because of the injury, but because it illustrated the reason he should be out of the NFL.
September 4th, 2015 at 5:01 pm
I don’t see how Ali Marpet starts over Matthew Masifilo, the player with the best camp/preseason suppose to get the start. Donovan Smith and Demar Dotson are battling injuries. We should keep Edawn Coughman as our backup swing tackle.I hope we do the right thing and go with the best players.
September 4th, 2015 at 5:08 pm
My understanding is that Bell can use the facilities, rehab, team meetings, but if he starts practicing with the team there would be problems. So it’s likely that he’s going to get the experience without “getting the experience.”
September 4th, 2015 at 5:10 pm
Lakeland Buc.
We are just pencil pushing armchair GMs for pointing out the fact that Masifilo has had a good camp/preseason by siting PFF grades and GMC glowing reports on his strength and progress. I was called that this morning by Eric.
September 4th, 2015 at 5:13 pm
haha thunderchunky is like Scott Reynolds favorite twitter person to respond to in those videos they post on the Bucs website
September 4th, 2015 at 5:22 pm
I knew Licht was not going to expose Kenny Bell to the waiver wire. They think enough of him to pay him $.5M for what is basically a “redshirt” year.
I like it considering the other young talent at WR that needs to be retained as well.
SPBF – Bell cannot play in games or practice – but he is “with” the team – so I’m pretty sure that means he has unlimited access to coaches, meetings, film, training/weight room etc etc.
Here are the details per wiki:
“A team may place a player on injured reserve (reserve/injured list) who is “not immediately available for participation with a club”. Generally, these players may not practice or return to the Active List for the rest of the season (including postseason games or the Pro Bowl) in which they are placed on injured reserve, but are allowed to be with the team.”
September 4th, 2015 at 5:28 pm
Lord Cornelius, that’s me LOL. It’s hard being a Buccaneers fan in the heart of Eagles country. I am glad I have my fellow fans and the good ol’ interweb so I can get my news, updates, and chat with my fellow fans. Since i am giving credit, I would like to thank Joe Bucs Fan for all the good work they do here.
September 4th, 2015 at 5:31 pm
Is calling Humphries Wes Welker & Kenny Amendola….sort of being racist?…..just wondering????
Also….just kidding!!!
September 4th, 2015 at 5:40 pm
The NFL does not limit the number of players on the PUP or IR, the salary cap sets its own constraints. One of the reasons the salary cap came into effect is the alleged abuse of the IR list to get around the NFL roster limit. High revenue teams, like the Dallas Cowboys, allegedly had the ability to redshirt unlimited young players by claiming they were injured (when they weren’t). Teams could place unlimited players on IR, thereby circumventing the roster limit.
Interesting read, article here.

September 4th, 2015 at 5:41 pm
No more links Joe, I promise!
September 4th, 2015 at 6:06 pm
Dirk Koetter has a plan to protect Ali Marpet on the offensive line……“We talked about this last week,” Koetter said. “There’s different things you can do to help your protection or help any individual guy that is struggling. We are not doing any of that in the preseason. Again, as I said last week, we are trying to teach a system and then when we really drill down on a game plan and match-ups, we’ll worry more about that. Even that wasn’t going to be the answer this last game. There are some things we can do and we’ve been practicing them out there. We haven’t necessarily taken them to the game yet.”
September 4th, 2015 at 6:22 pm
I’m glad I can still use him in Madden. Nice to have a speedy slot receiver.
September 4th, 2015 at 6:33 pm
Lol, after the draft I heard a lot of talk from poster about what a good pick Bell was. They whiffed on picks 5,6 & 7. Ironically nobody talked much about Kwon and so far he has been a home run for a 4th round pick.
September 4th, 2015 at 6:36 pm
Lakeland Buc- I remember Koetter saying that but the plan didn’t work so well against the Browns. He said they did something to prevent them from sliding help to the G(s) then realized he maybe saying to much and claimed shut. I hope that wasn’t the only plan. The browns film will be watched by all our 3-4 def opponents. I’m sure getting the ball out quickly and two back sets for added blocking will be a part of it too.
September 4th, 2015 at 6:36 pm
Off topic but Freeman was cut. Call me whatever you like but thats one guy that I can’t help but to laugh at his misfortunes. Go sit back down on the couch FreeWee, you’ll never be screwing over another team again.
September 4th, 2015 at 6:39 pm
CALLED IT!!! This way the door’s wide open to run with shepard, Hall and Humphries, the 3 recievers that have actually gone out and EARNED their spots thru their play.
September 4th, 2015 at 7:00 pm
This guy was destined for the practice squad……would not have made the team.
September 4th, 2015 at 7:37 pm
@Hawaii Buc
If I got fired for not doing my job well and replaced by someone who does do the job well then yes people should celebrate. Use some common sense
Bowers was a waste of uniform
September 4th, 2015 at 7:46 pm
Personally I would have kept Bowers and cut Spenser and I would’ve kept Bell over hall but then again I thought kwon was a safety so what do I know
September 4th, 2015 at 8:19 pm
DB55, Kwon actually played SS at LSU, before he switched to linebacker.
September 4th, 2015 at 8:33 pm
My bad Kwon didn’t play SS that was Khaseem Greene.
September 4th, 2015 at 8:35 pm
Lol, on paper he looks like a safety. On the field he looks like a beast. Honestly he looks like LVD 2.0
September 4th, 2015 at 8:54 pm
@TouchDownTampaBay
Bell IS a good pick. If he were allowed to heal up on the roster, he would be playing within a few weeks. But they need the spot for other players and this allows them to keep him.
Don’t assume he’s not good just yet. People made the same mistake with Gerald McCoy for 2 years.
September 4th, 2015 at 8:57 pm
@DB55
Why keep Bowers over Spense? Bowers is NOT a good DT or DE. Spense is developing slowly, but he’s getting better.
We already know where Bower’s cap is. Nowhere.
I’m not saying Spense is great…but of the two, he has more upside.
September 4th, 2015 at 8:58 pm
That Kwon pick may just save Lovie down the road. Between McCoy, Favid and Kwon, we have the foundation in place. If they get a good DE…it will get really good.
Hopefully one will rise up.
September 4th, 2015 at 9:01 pm
Whatever.
There, I called it it.
Actually, if anything, I feel bad for Freeman. Something has happened to him, and I suspect it is mental. Maybe he took too many blows to the head?
I’ve never seen any player self destruct in such a short amount of time. Usually there are stronger warning signs. Like if Talib went out and shot someone, we would all be like “saw that coming!”
September 4th, 2015 at 9:02 pm
Anyone know how long the waiver wire takes? Example Cowboys waive rookie center. If we grab him when would it take place. 2nd does anyone know about the Cowboys rookie center they released or the guard from 49ers?
September 4th, 2015 at 9:26 pm
After a player is waived by a team, the rest of the league has a 24-hour window to claim the rights to that player. If multiple teams claim the same player, the club with the highest waiver priority gets him. If a player goes unclaimed, he becomes a free agent eligible to sign with any team he wants.
September 4th, 2015 at 9:33 pm
We need to pick up Kenjon Barner the eagles cut as a return man
September 4th, 2015 at 9:37 pm
The Bucs worked out Andrew Hudson today, an undrafted rookie cut by the Bills. I remember the Bucs brought him in for a pre-draft visit, he’s another undersized DE at 6’2 250 lbs. They will be bringing in a lot of DEs during the next few weeks.
September 4th, 2015 at 9:42 pm
Hey Joe, when can the bucs begin to sign waived players?
September 4th, 2015 at 9:42 pm
Bonzai
I saw Bowers do a lot of good things not only in the preseason but also last year. I think he’s stronger and faster than Spence. I also think he has the ability to take on double teams better than Spence. I just seen him do some pretty decent stuff man, honestly I think he earned a spot this year so I don’t know. he obviously is not our number one I think he’s probably a step below Gholston but I still think he’s 2-3 steps ahead of Spence.
Plus, spense has off-field issues and bowers is a choir boy and you know we love ourselves some choir boys around here. I always take it too far. HA!
September 4th, 2015 at 9:45 pm
Bonzai
Their only saving grace thus far is keeping Tandy and cutting conte. Heck I’m still mad that we gave up a 5th rounder for George. Most of our decisions perplex me.
September 4th, 2015 at 9:47 pm
I can’t get excited about young players who got cut from their team unless they were behind like an epic all pro player and obviously would never play a.k.a. brent hudley let’s just for an example.
It’s not the tools it’s the craftsman. Remember that!!
September 4th, 2015 at 9:51 pm
Classic example why is Bobby Rainey working as a third running back he’s obviously I mean obviously better than Mr. Sims and that’s just the fact look at the stats and the film I mean it’s just obvious but yet I would not be surprised if Rainey gets cut. Yes are leading rusher from last year sad but true.
September 4th, 2015 at 9:55 pm
What’s coming to mind is one time when Bell was interviewed he marveled at Jameis’ work ethic. If you remember Bell did state that Jameis’ work ethic is making him a better player “BECAUSE HE HIMSELF IS NORMALLY NOT LIKE THAT”! This could eventually make the difference in making him “The Dude”….. And not “The Dud”.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:16 pm
Thanks stanglassman. Hopefully we can finds some guys through waivers. Maybe that center from Cowboys is good but they have enough great lineman already. I can dream anyway.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:17 pm
barner wasn’t going to return over sproles but had a few tds returns this preseason and he wasn’t going to see the field as a rb with murray matthews and sproles ahead of him
September 4th, 2015 at 10:23 pm
Just like I said when he was drafted… such a low % of guys taken where he was in the draft ever do anything in the NFL. To think I thought he had a chance at catching 20 regular season passes.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:25 pm
The Bears have waive Mason Foster
September 4th, 2015 at 10:28 pm
That’ great. Canada’s Quarterback Jamies Winston will soon be playing with Canada’s Wes Welker and Canada’s Mike Wallace. They’ll do great up there. As for the NFL, not so much for any of them.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:41 pm
Hudson was opposite Kikaha for the Huskies so the Buc scouts have probably pretty familiar with him. He reminds me of all the DEs they have already. There is a good artile on him at Uwdawgpound + Hudson. I promised ‘Joe” no more links.
DB55- Some players excel better in different systems and/or positions. They don’t have to be behind a probowler in order to work out well for another team.
Keep in mind if the Bucs pick up a return specialist then they would have to cut Humph or Hall, assuming Clay and Dye are the next two WR cuts and they keep 6.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:47 pm
The Bucs said Clay wasn’t their 1st choice as a return specialist (Lockett?) but man was that guy a natural at it in college. I just watched his college return highlights and can’t figure out why he didn’t look better than he did.
September 4th, 2015 at 10:49 pm
Cyril Richardson a big OG was waive by the Bills,a 2014 5th round draft pick from Baylor. Will the Bucs make a play for him?
September 4th, 2015 at 11:02 pm
Thanks for the prospects LakelandBuc.
I remember that guy he looks & plays a bit like Joseph coming out. He was a top prospect Jr year in college but gained too much weight. I’ll check out why the Bills let him go. But right now I’d say yea bring the guy in to check him out.
September 4th, 2015 at 11:14 pm
I looks like the Bills drafted G John Miller in the 3rd rd and tried to kick Cyril Richardson out to tackle. According to Bill camp notes CR looked good and was playing better than the rookie Miller.
September 4th, 2015 at 11:31 pm
Teams that are winners always hit gold in the 5th 6th and 7th rounds. That’s why we are who we thought we were. I’m just a die hard Bucs fan that is a realist and knows that this team is headed to another horrible season. And Joe please stop calling jameis America’s Quarterback dude, he is not even the best quarterback in florida right now dude.
September 4th, 2015 at 11:36 pm
Oh and by the way whoever pays more than 30 dollars for opening game vs Tennessee is getting robbed by the system.
September 4th, 2015 at 11:37 pm
I hate this for Bell. But in the long run, a year to watch and learn NFL football will do wonders for him.
September 4th, 2015 at 11:41 pm
Maybe the whole team should have a year to watch and learn how to win in this league, including Lovie and Mr Licht
September 5th, 2015 at 1:03 am
Stanglassman ur the man I raise my drink to u for not being lazy n doing a quick research on Cyril Richardson. I seen the name Cyril Richardson n also thought he was young but up n coming. We need to pick him up as depth or to challenge mankins for his spot. Alson Kenjon Barner would be a GREAT return man for us. That must have hurt Chip Kelley being a former coach n all.
September 5th, 2015 at 2:19 am
Hall is better than your great white hope, and I’m white lol…. WR U baby
September 5th, 2015 at 5:30 am
ok, where’s the next article?
wake up joes and post some news, opinion, rumor…
