Positive Jameis
September 3rd, 2015Saturday night, Bucs fans were doing two things: Puking all over their living room rugs or trying to beat the crowd to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.
In what was believed to be the dress rehearsal for the regular season, the team looked in need of a collective chug of Kaopectate.
The offensive line would have scared Freddy Krueger and the defense played uneven. At times dominant, and at times it allowed the Browns offense — led by Josh McClown of all people — to drag it down the field on drives of 78 and 80 yards.
Through it all, America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, remained above the fray. Positive. Glass is half-full.
That’s the word from Yahoo! Sports Eric Adelson, who wonders if Jameis is truly that sincere, that he can he see light when there is darkness. Or is it just a front?
This is Winston’s most admirable quality. Where everyone else sees a harbinger of a dreadful season, he’ll find five plays that can potentially serve as a launching pad of learning. “We saw what we’re going to see during the season,” he said. “That’s definitely helping us out.”
Is it all an act? Possibly. But it’s a very consistent act, and it’s convincing. He got into what must have been a dour huddle on Saturday and repeated what has already become a refrain: “Hey, guys, this is just the beginning!”
“He’s always positive,” Fragel said. “Always upbeat, never negative. That’s good for a quarterback, it’s good for a team.”
As Adelson rightly asks, will this sunny disposition of Jameis be beaten out of him by, say, Halloween?
Let’s face it, thus far in three preseason games, teams that have had sucess against Jameis have blitzed heavily up the middle, in the A-gaps in particular.
There is a very real likelihood Jameis and the Bucs are going to see a steady diet of these blitzes until or unless the Bucs show they can slow them down, so Jameis can step into the pocket and throw.

I think Koetter will have a fine collection of quick outs available for Jameis to allow him to quickly get rid of the ball.

Again my 67 years, especially those since I turned 40 have shown me that Fameis GET’S IT!!!!
OK 87 again I’ll be happy to say you were right. This is a MAJOR advantage for us! Every edge we can get I’ll be happy to take. Trust me guys this attitude is infectious and it can literally be the difference between success and failure.
Google Emile Coue and see how he treated people with the simple use of affirmations. His famous affirmation..”Every day in every way I am getting better and better”. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fameis hasn’t discovered his own tricks to augment and implement his positive thinking.
I’ve just come out of the most stressful two years of my life. My wife, the love of my life had open heart surgery two years ago, selling our business and office building was an incredible struggle, didn’t know if we’d ever get to retirement and now here I am free to bore the JBF posters and enjoy Lake Superior. 🙂
This “Fameis” attitude is what got me through these past two years. I hope he doesn’t get tested as severely as me…my life was 2-14 before this June…now I feel undefeated. Fameis attitude is going to help us over the bumps and while I’m an optimist I certainly concede that with a rookie QB and two rookie OL and a rookie MLB there WILL be bumps!!! At least we have Fameis to help navigate those bumps.
I joked with either Dallas, realist or Tmax that I thought they might actually be Ian Beckles posting here. LMAO. If I was a Buc player posting here I would be Fameis!

This is just who the kid is…always about team and always positive. If this team is struggling at the end of October he will be at the podium talking about how much he (and the team) are learning through the hardships andhow it’s going to propel them down the road.
My glass is half full right now as well. I think this team is going to surprise people, including those who are ready to jump off the bandwagon after a preseason game.
Tonight’s going to be a helluva test though. From what I’ve heard, the O starters will be playing into the third. Hopefully Jameis can make that long tonight

It’s very sad that many posters don’t follow their “savior’s” lead…..constantly being negative at every turn.
I’m happy that we have a young Q with talent and a great attitude.
Let’s back him up….

My advice for the season… Bet the over! Over anything you can find. Over 6 wins, over however many points, over this many TDs for Jaboo. If the spread is 6 bet it like its 5. That way, when all the haters are like “I never said they would be bad” or ” I didn’t think Mariota would be better”, you can at least be content in the fact that you won bundles of money.

Here is my positive hope…..I positively hope that Winston’s ankle is good to go for week one. I also positively hope that he NEVER tries to hold the ball in the pocket for 7 seconds EVER again…well actually, he may never be given 7 seconds again. 🙂
September 3rd, 2015 at 9:56 am
My positive hope is that like Jameis…..the team improves from week-to-week….

@SPBF
Sorry to hear about your struggles in the recent past and I especially wish your wife well. I know we all get so passionate about the Bucs and our individual opinions regarding the same but it is not so important compared to our personal real life struggles. I wish you and your wife the best and a long happy retirement.

@TBBF
Well said. Hopefully they will steadily improve. If we struggle out of the gate and finish strong, it will bode well for the future.

Winston isn’t playing tonight.

i’m hopeful the offense knows something the fans don’t. namely, that there will be tons of plays in the playbook to slow down pass rushers that our OL can’t, like screens, slants, etc. especially with the titans week 1, they probably don’t mind tape that shows winston taking the snap and then basically becoming a tackling dummy. it gives tennessee no clues as to what our preferred tactics for countering the blitz will be. after a few years of disguising Atlanta’s OL, this is not a new problem for Koetter

Replay of cleveland game is on right now on nfl network, 10am est.

I strongly suspect that we have been gameplannig for Tennessee & their 3/4 defense for months.
We knew that Cleveland had a 3/4 and deliberately didn’t employ our offensive plays against it not to show our hand.
As secret as Lovie tries to be on somewhat unimportant items….I can’t concieve that we don’t have a strong plan in place for Tennessee.
I also think we have a few tricks we haven’t shown on defense with blitzing our LBs, CBs & Ss…..

@TBBF – I’m with you!
@SPBF – Wishing you and your wife true golden years.
In Lovie, Licht, Koetter and Wins-Ton I TRUST!!!

Thanks guys! And for anybody who is facing personal challenges…my best to you…hang in there…keep the “Fameis attitude” and eventually things can work out.

In retiremet I hope you find what I have found……”There is one thing that is better than doing nothing”…..”Thinking about doing nothing while you’re doing nothing!!!”

Nevermind….it’ll be the dam brady show for the rest of the day now!!! Good grief, take 5 mins at most for the story, GEEZE!!!

Even more important than a positive attitude is an attitude of gratitude.
We’re fortunate to have three major sports teams here. I came here in the summer of ’72, rookie at the Tribune and have seen the growth in Tampa. McEwen used to host a party for all the NFL big-wigs when we’d host one exhibition game a year as part of the push to get a franchise. McEwen made us park cars and serve drinks at those parties…lol……back in those days high school football was on the front page, soooooooo, here we are and by those standards we’re really big-time…
So I think deep down inside, Jameis is more grateful about his situation, given how things might have gone for him….
I know Tiger Woods is “staying positive” telling everyone he’s close but he’s been saying that for a long time now and hasn’t won a major in seven years…
What it all means is that Jameis is still fresh off winning just about every game he’s ever played in……things will be different now and he’s now in an arena where he’s probably going to lose a lot more than he wins this season and that will be a big adjustment for him…

SPBF, I just read what you said. Sorry you went through that but glad things are better now.

@ Tom Edrington
I’m with you….I spent 71-78 at WTVT…….the best thing going before the Bucs was Univ of Tampa Football….and USF Basketball…..
Now look what Tampa has!!!

Go…..”Golden Brahmans”!!!
September 3rd, 2015 at 11:17 am
The Animosity Amigos could learn a thing or 2 about life from young “Positive Jameis”.
September 3rd, 2015 at 11:24 am
Blitzing the A gaps seems to work on our YUCS every time. It also seems to work for everyone else in the league for that matter. Are we the only team not employing this strategy? I rarely see it on D.

@TBBF:
Golden Brahman: saddest looking mascot EVER!

Tom Edrington… I also enjoyed reading Tom Mc Ewen growing up in Tampa. He used to answer letters in the paper.

I’m fairly certain that the majority of Bucs fans realize that Jameis Winston has only played (5) quarters of preseason NFL football. Of those (5) quarters he played, despite his bravado, with an ankle injury for at least (3) quarters.
I’m curious about the fans who think that a QB can play their best football on 1-leg. While Lovie is no Mike Shanahan, clearly Jameis is not getting the benefit of reasonable play calling or in-game adjustments by Koetter that may produce better results both in YPG and maintaining the health of our #1 draft pick.
Getting your ROOKIE QB’s brains beat out because he wasn’t exceptional YET at calling audibles or protections based on his “vast experience” of (5) quarters of NFL football is really rather sadistic.
“Be Great or Be Injured” is not a good coaching philosophy.
It’s a CYA excuse…!!!
I think that Jameis shouldn’t have played, at all, after his initial ankle injury. Post game film would allow our defense to simulate the same 3/4 defensive packages in full-speed practices that we faced during the preseason without risking the health of our biggest investment.
To be honest, Koetter has said some things that worry me regarding his approach to preparing Jameis for NFL defenses. I like to compare outcomes when judging coaching.
The Titans seem to have a go slow approach and are trying to tailor their playbook to their rookie QB’s strengths. Their preseason games have started off with short passes, screens and runs combined to make it easy for Marcus to build confidence. Their 2nd possessions seem to allow a few more mid-level passes that open up their offense even more and keep the defense guessing.
OTOH, the Bucs seem to have a “throw everything at Jameis now” approach. I haven’t seen a lot of short passes (slants, RB/WR screens called at the start of games that will slow down the rush and help establish confidence in both Jameis and the OL. Doug Martin has had a few nice runs that open up passes because the “D” can’t blitz everybody AND cover the run.
So, perhaps we should temper our expectations about Jameis and concentrate more on how we play (play calling) rather than who (team or defensive scheme) we play.
September 3rd, 2015 at 1:32 pm
I’m excited to see Jamies develop on the field this year.
But I have to be honest, I’ve been most impressed with his attitude
I’m most eager to see how his demeanor changes (if it changes) over the course of this season with losing (he’s not used to that), the turn-stiles in front of him, and frustration with the media.

@TBBF
”Thinking about doing nothing while you’re doing nothing!!!”
I haven’t mastered it yet but I’m getting there! 🙂
@Tom
Great point. Gratitude is also critical in life. I could not agree more. I also like to spend a few minutes every day in simple awe. As in how does all this really work? If you look around and pay attention life is really pretty incredible.
