George Johnson Starting To Flash?
August 27th, 2015When the Bucs traded for George Johnson, a defensive end from Detroit, Joe thought the Bucs were dumpster diving.
It marked Johnson’s second stint with the Bucs, and Joe is guessing fans would be hard-pressed to name any play he made during his first go-around.
Joe also figured that with other NFL castoffs like Larry English, Jacquies Smith and Johnson, the Bucs were going bullpen-by-committee route and hoping to piece double-digit sacks from the edge with those three. You know, if each got four this year, that would total 12.
It appears Johnson is off to a good start. Facing a veteran front line like the Bungles’, Johnson tied for tied linebackers Kwon Alexander and Jason Williams for most tackles with four. Johnson also was credited with 1.5 sacks, sharing a sack with Gerald McCoy.
The Bucs got Johnson for a fifth-round pick. So in Joe’s eyes, if Johnson can get, say, four sacks and decent overall production on the edge, that’s a helluva steal by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
That’s more than the Bucs got out of sackless Kyle Moore.

And if George Johnson gets 9.5 sacks and 52 tackles this year.
That’s more than the Bucs got out of Adrian Slowborn and Da’Quan Bowers put together on there best year!!!!!!!

All that good coaching he received at Rutgers 🙂

When I saw the sacks Monday night I had to ask if this was real life. Off topic…just read that we picked Barth back up. I like the move and whoever wins out the job will hopefully just need to be automatic from 33 yards or whatever the new PAT yardage is now that we have a promising red zone TD scoring machine on offense. Trying to throttle back my excitement after one nice all around effort in one preseason game but it is refreshing to have hope for a change. I have watched the 1st half of the Bungles game everyday since the game. 🙂

So, the always insightful JOE will be contented with Johnson getting four sacks this year even though he got six last year. I guess JOE is OK with regression. Also, why pull a name out of the air like Kyle Moore? Illogical! After years of trying to do what JOE apparently wants to do in this space, JOE still thinks and types like a tyro. My first suggestion for JOE to try to improve would be for JOE to get away from JOE’s “good friend” and “dean”.

I’m hopeful that we can get sacks from a number of players adding up to a productive year.

Man what’s the word on Jac. His motor is tireless,I need him on that field harassing marita week one.

Preseason.
Let’s keep things in perspective. Production doesn’t count in preseason. Too many backups playing.

theres that word they love to throw around in the tampa media around here….once again another player “FLASHED”
hey does anyone remember the preseason game of last year and how so many players flashed before we proceeded to go 2-14 with those same players. fine he flashed in limited playing time just like doug martin and Winston all players who I really like but come on joe your really just hyping up this player or that player so you can be ready to bash said player because they didn’t meet your expectation during the season.
no one in this town should care about anyone “FLASHING” unless your a rookie and your not a veteran in the league. why not wait until the opposing team is actually game planning and everything isn’t so vanilla. just a thought

Actually I don’t remember any players flashing in preseason last year at all. We looked like hot garbage, and continued to play that way all year.
I think people are excited bc they finally saw better playing with guys flying around on the field. Now we just ME13 and Jaq smith to get healthy.

This line has to produce. So far, Melton and Johnson look intense. Jac, I haven’t seen him at all and Gholstons playing with the third string guys. They all gotta step up.
I dont care if they are all stars with flashy resume’s. I just want to see them come out agressive goig full speed hitting people for four quarters.

I believe Big George can give us 12 sacks this season.

@unbelievable..i agree..i don’t recall seeing any players flash or fly around the ball..everything from last year was a mess..at least this year it looks like we have good players on our roster and these players look like they actually know what they are suppose to be doing..GO BUCS!!!

For everybody looking for every reason to ignore our obvious improvement and success.
YES it’s only preseason and no many of these results would not be the same in the regular season.
BUT….the win is only important here because we were so desperate to get ANY kind of win at home and it is certainly a confidence builder.
And YES the Bucs were fired up and the Bungles were flat. But it wasn’t beating up on their second stringers that’s just wrong! Dalton and Atkins played most of the first half. Our STARTERS against their STARTERS looked dominant. If the Bungles had been fired up I agree it would have been tougher but we still outplayed them.
We’ve had genuine negatives JAMMED down our throats 30-70 is hard to swallow over these past years. Can’t we at least embrace some positives?
I’m not pulling a Herm Edwards and calling for a Super Bowl. But ten wins in this horrid division is doable. Then I accept it’s probably one and done in the playoffs. But another draft next year like this year and watch out SB 52.
Titans versus Bucs!
