Lovie: Evans Out For Preseason With Bad Hammy
August 25th, 2015When Mike Evans first came to the Buccaneers, he tweaked a hamstring in spring practices.
Last season, he blew a groin in Pittsburgh but only missed a game and a half.
Against the Bengals last night, Evans pulled a hamstring and left the game. This afternoon, Lovie Smith announced that Evans is done for the preseason with that hammy injury.
Joe could speculate up and down about Evans’ injury. Nobody knows. We’ll see if he practices. In 15 days, Evans will — or will not — appear on the first injury report of the regular season. The Bucs face the Titans in the season opener in 19 days.
A potential loss of Evans, even for one game, could be toxic. It would have a ripple effect through the offense. Vincent Jackson would see a diet of double teams, and Louis Murphy and likely Russell Shepard would have to rise up, much like they did in the thrilling win at Pittsburgh last year.
Joe’s hoping for the best. That’s all we got right now.

I’m starting to get worried now. We need him for week 1. These young receivers need to fill the void if he can’t go.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:05 pm
At least it’s not season ending. We’ve been lucky so far. Knock on wood.

Hopefully management is just gripping after watching Jordy Nelson and Kelvin Benjamin go down and they’re just being super, super, cautious.

Winston will be in a floppy hat right next to him for the preseason too. I’d like to see a pic of the ankle so I can stop trippin’.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:13 pm
What St Pete said.

55, I’m worried about that ankle too. The one angle they showed on it looked really bad.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:22 pm
Evans had the same issue last season. Perhaps he will be fine for the regular season. He really has not shined this preseason and it is too bad we have to all hope he can play like he did last season and not have a Clayton like slump after a spectacular rookie season.

They are just being cautious with him. Plus, its a good chance for coaches to see what we have in the rest of the WR we have. Its only preseason, why get our best receiver hurt for no reason. Good chance to evaluate what else we have. Looking to see K. Bell somewhere in there getting his first preseason catch.

Damn, I just hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Eric
Having broken my ankles several times I feel like an expert. I just hope it’s not black n blue today. That would not be good.
August 25th, 2015 at 6:26 pm
I’m sure it’s caution……No reason to play Evans in preseason….hamstrings can be tricky.
August 25th, 2015 at 6:39 pm
A bit of a damper on an otherwise good night of football. Rest that hammy Big Mike. We need you man.
August 25th, 2015 at 6:40 pm
Well. His stat line with winston is zero catches for 0 yards and minimal effort on every target
August 25th, 2015 at 6:58 pm
55, I agree
August 25th, 2015 at 7:04 pm
Mike Evans hasn’t caught a pass in preseason, even though he’s been target 5 times. It seems like like he’s not getting open, I believe we will get most of our production from our Backs, TEs, Slot Receiver this season.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:08 pm
I am never that pessimistic, but this is concerning. I run and exercise a lot. If you are getting proper fluids, you should not be pulling hamstrings in the humidity and heat in Florida. He keeps having issues anyway. That’s concerning.

Winston looked fine by the end of the game. Not worried about the ankle. Sometimes it looks worse than it is. Young people can be very resilient and JW seems like the type that has some rubber in his ligaments.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:28 pm
I predicted a lot of injuries this year, but mostly on defense. Only 2 preseason games and it’s already looking bad.
Thankfully, he’ll be back for te regular season.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:33 pm
It’s not broken. Just a little sore. Give it a week and it will be fine. He was running on it afterward. Can’t be too bad.
He might end up taking the two games off, but he really would only need one. Just the last preseason game is usually mostly backups.

Dave
The adrenaline alone will have you “not hurt” then add 215lbs of machismo and you start running. Then you wake up the next day like “hmmm ow damn that hurts”. At least that’s been my experiences.
But when I tore my knee I was squirming like a female dog on the field.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:50 pm
Evans should not have been running all out down the sidelines as speed is not his strength. Duh, whoever called that play screwed up. Throw him shorter passes. Winston probably has a swollen ankle today, after the incident he moved around on it despite the noticeable limp. Once off his feet the sprain or whatever it is likely is swollen. Both of these players are questionable for the season opener. Let them rest until completely healed. I’m no doctor, but that’s my take.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:57 pm
buccfan37 effort is not his strength either. look at him flopping for penalty flags before the ball even got to him on winstons only interception.
August 25th, 2015 at 8:03 pm
Danr…I get the feeling you would rather the Bucs just trade Evans and get it over with.
August 25th, 2015 at 8:14 pm
If Kenny bell can break out on Saturday night it would be a nice sight. ASJ as well. Im thinking Lovie is just bejng cautious and letting Evans rest. He knows these things happen during the regular season and is challenging the young guys to step up and help the team when its in need. Thats who Im watching Bell and ASJ. Winston needs to careful on that ankle. Once close to 100%….I would also make Winston do the tire excersize for half of practice everyday unitl his sloppy feet condition is cured.Glennon looked sharp. The defense he played against has nothing to do with his ball placement and anticipation. He looked really good in Koetters offense. Im comftorable going forward. I think Lovie has this together after seeing the all around effort the other night
August 25th, 2015 at 8:16 pm
If Winston can build off of last night, the receivers around him will look great. Where did Russell Shepard come from? He looked great last night.
August 25th, 2015 at 8:27 pm
actually, no. i just want the young man to step up. he has the ability to be a beast. but if he does not want to try we will have another flash in the pan wr who is just trying to win on skill. IT IS concerning.

Hall>Bell Herron Sheppard
August 26th, 2015 at 3:41 am
Agreed Nuc, although Shepard looked much improved on the offense so I’d keep monitoring him. Made a few clutch grabs.
