Glimpse Of The Future
August 25th, 2015Watching America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, march the Bucs downfield last night, mixing in strong runs by Doug Martin and timely, accurate passes, Joe got weak in the knees.
Could the Bucs, the ground-and-pound Bucs, the defensive-minded Bucs, a team so putrid at times on offense you often went to the crapper when the Bucs had the ball, actually provide offensive excitement for a change?
Last night seemed to indicate, yes. And this was not lost on rookie right guard Ali Marpet.
Of course, it all starts with blocking up front and the Bucs got that last night.
“I thought we showed flashes of how good we can be and we have a good collection of some veterans and some new guys which will help us move the ball a lot,” Marpet said. “The penalties did kill us, but offensively we showed what we can do.”
Indeed. That was the biggest thing that Joe noticed. Not so much Jameis throwing the ball like the No. 1 overall pick he is; not Muscle Hamster running the ball perhaps even better than he was a rookie. There was impressive blocking going on up front early on from a unit that has been much-maligned of late, and for good reason.
Perhaps the lousy offensive line we have been accustomed to is beginning to turn the corner?
August 25th, 2015 at 4:07 pm
I hope so Joe, but there are gonna be bumps in the road, i.e., Jameis getting rolled after the rooks got beat.
Lets just hope he stays vertical all year.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:10 pm
Over under on amount of games Jameis misses? This line is still awful. I hope I’m wrong but im guessing Jameis misses 2-3 games
August 25th, 2015 at 4:11 pm
actually for a change provide some offensive excitement?
YES!
And you nailed it Joe! Yes it was great to see our #1 pick play like the top pick.
Fameis is clearly the real deal. It was great to see Martin regain his form.
But to see the line play like that…awesome baby!!! 10-6!!!
August 25th, 2015 at 4:14 pm
Winston had bad line play at FSU most the year and got dinged a lot but never missed a game. If he was Sam Bradford or a guy known for getting hurt I’d be more worried but he’s not
August 25th, 2015 at 4:16 pm
The hits that “ding” you coming from college guys can end your career coming from pro men.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:29 pm
I remember receiving a couple jabs when I declared him a future stud when he was drafted. Arrow is pointing ⬆️
August 25th, 2015 at 4:33 pm
Let’s not get all spastic and gushy over one preseason game against the Bungles who had arguably their worst showing in 3-5 years. Even that does not diminish the evident superior talent of JW and the nice work by the O line rooks. Thumbs up. And Joe, keep it in your pants, there will be too many ups and downs over the next 4 months to risk a heart attack over one column.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:34 pm
Perhaps, the lousy offensive line we have been accustomed to in recent years is beginning to turn the corner
****************************
The corner out the door of OBP. I saw a whole new line from last year with mankins as the only returning player.
D. Smith, mankins, warren, Marpet, Cherilus.
That line should work to keep the messiah upright.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:34 pm
I can see 8-8 if the defense plays like that all season. The offense will be a work in progress all season long mixed with flashes of utter brilliance.
I don’t want to talk about the draft until January, but man, a few more decent drafts and the Bucs could be really scary. I mean really, a fourth round starter? Three starters out of one draft, plus role players? That’s awesome.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:35 pm
P.S.
All Glennon bashers, bite me.
August 25th, 2015 at 4:38 pm
That the best quarter of football I’ve seen the bucs play in years. I’M GOING TO BE EXCITED DARN IT until Saturday morning.
LET US ENJOY ONE DAY of GLORY!!!!
August 25th, 2015 at 4:41 pm
10-6
REJOICE for the KINGDOM of JAMEIS is near!!!!
August 25th, 2015 at 4:49 pm
Hey Rugyup, ill bet last year though you were tellilng us how bad we would be after watching the preseason games. But when there is good play, its WHOA NELLY
Cant have it both ways. There is reason to get excited, trust me. Ive watched Bucs preseason games since 1980, and were .500 in the preseason while only about .320 the rest of the way.
This looked damn good. I had a feeling last week was just running into a vikings team that already played a game
August 25th, 2015 at 4:58 pm
Dirk Koetter, Lovie calling defensive plays (the resurrection of The Tampa 2) & Winston is the TRIFECTA baby!
p.s. The Bengals are a playoff team!!!!!!!
August 25th, 2015 at 5:06 pm
It was a lot of fun for a change to watch a Bucs game. Preseason or not, when is the last time anyone was actually entertained by the Bucs??? I will take it and hope there are many more where that came from.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:06 pm
Catching up on the replay now….man that TD throw by MG8 was beautiful!
Oh Marpet?……uh huh! Told you so!
August 25th, 2015 at 5:17 pm
I was pleased that Chuckie gushed over how great a QB Glennon is and that Glennon actually looked like a back up QB this time because, the game was on ESPN and National Television, so hopefully a team will remember all that and will offer at least a second round choice in exchange for Glennon when their QB gets injured. It has always been a real rare sight for Glennon to go all the way down the field and score a touchdown. If you check it is usually when the Bucs have a turnover on about the other team’s 30 yardline that Glennon is then able to engineer a TD, and we got lots of turnovers yesterday. Otherwise a very encouraging ball game and a Great WIN!!!
August 25th, 2015 at 5:18 pm
Amen RayJay!!!
“when is the last time anyone was actually entertained by the Bucs???”
I forget! Maybe JFro’s big year? But that’s a great observation RayJay.
Winning is great but I liked to be entertained. Last year’s wins were more of a relief…both of them..than entertainment.
This team can be exciting! And not just the Offense. Kwon seems to have brought the return of the old magic with LB’s flying all over the field and being tackling machines.
And how great do we feel that they have Hardy Nickerson to mentor them. They will bring the meanness and the swag as well.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:29 pm
Best stat of the game: Bucs keeping the ball for 40 minutes on the night. When was the last time any Bucs team did that?
August 25th, 2015 at 5:30 pm
Martin definitely looked good. Was nice to see. Yet, Glennon looked awesome as well. Bengals looked awful. I’ll take that game with a grain of salt until regular season.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:34 pm
Jameis looked better, which is all you can ask. Oline looked better let’s hope that continues.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:39 pm
I was most impressed by our Defense…….I think the additions to our interior line and our improved linebacker & safety play really showed…..
August 25th, 2015 at 5:49 pm
TBBF…before the game my very first post on the live thread was this and this only. “I hope they atleast get a fingernail on Dalton tonight.”
So you can imagine how elated I was when I saw that pocket collapsing left and right. It’s was a thing of beauty, preseason or not.
August 25th, 2015 at 5:57 pm
Echoing my fellow JBF regulars…..The best Ive seen in a while. I know its only pre season but dag nabbit….we’ve been starved for some good football. Lets enjoy it!
Im going 9-7…maybe slip into the playoffs with a division title or Wild Card. NO and Carolina are toast. Its between us and the Dirty Birds this season!
August 25th, 2015 at 6:08 pm
Tbbf
But did you see bowers making a tackle for a safety? Kwon cleaned it up but bowers was literally in the trenches creating havoc!!! OMGEEEEE
August 25th, 2015 at 6:34 pm
To “ding” comment. Lot of those hits he took were from NFL players lol. College dudes are pretty big too lol. But why think rationally when you can live in constant pessimistic fear assuming an injury? Good luck with that man
August 25th, 2015 at 6:37 pm
DB55 I’m not following. Lansanah got the tackle that resulted in safety.
August 25th, 2015 at 6:48 pm
Lord Cornelius…lol I was thinking the same thing when I read it too. Those were college hits and these are pro hits. Like there’s really a BIG difference or something.
DoNUTS said earlier Winston has not thrown a TD pass in the pros so the jury is still out about just how good he will be. I countered with he threw 65 of them in college. His answer : well it’s a big difference from pro to college. As if he won’t be able to throw a TD in the pros or something. You just have to laugh when you read stuff like this.
Some people just want to hold onto anything negative that they can I guess.
August 25th, 2015 at 6:53 pm
I said it a little earlier again, but I’m just so excited I want to make the same point again
Last night I decided I was going to key in and watch Marpet & Kwon as much as I could.
Marpet was outstanding. He wasn’t going up against Atkins on every play but when he did he won. I really can’t get over how good he is already…I was in the camp that he was going to need a “redshirt” year but after seeing him hold his own against GMC in camp and watching him routinely beat Atkins last night (two of the best DT’s in the game) I am absolutely giddy over what the future holds for him.
Kwon Alexander — I mean what can you say? Against the run the kid was violent, physical, and angry. The instincts he showed to read the play and fill the running lane was extremely impressive. He’s going to make an incredible difference in the running game for the defense. It’s tough to watch the LB’s in pass coverage on broadcast TV but from what I saw he was more than serviceable. He was getting deep in his zone (which is what this defense demands from its MLB) and although his man caught a couple of balls he always made the tackle.
The thing that worries me a little is how vanilla the Bengals were last night. Will Marpet be able to pick up the blitz? Will Kwon be able to get the defense into the right coverages vs more intricate offensive looks? Probably not 100% of the time, but from what I’ve seen so far Licht absolutely hit a homerun with the draft of 2015
August 25th, 2015 at 7:07 pm
Lets hope that – Logan Mankins – bad knee’s can hold up.

*********
Nope go back n look at the film it’s was bowers filling the hole and penetrating the Los. I may be mistaken about #58 vs #51 but it was #71 making the play, I promise.
August 25th, 2015 at 7:49 pm
Cream
You right it wasn’t perfect but it’s something to build on.
Most of all I’m just excited I wasn’t bombarded with the typical “you guys suck” texts from my friends up north. That to me was a victory in itself.
August 25th, 2015 at 8:07 pm
DB55, Lansanah was credited with it. Go check the stat line for scoring.
1st and 10 at CIN 1 Danny Lansanah Safety

After this win and level of play it feels like weight was lifted off the team and fans backs. It feels lighter to me. In the den of depression a hint was laid that it will eventually become the den of dominance.
August 25th, 2015 at 8:14 pm
skyline and db55……
ENOUGH!!!!!! Who cares….Jesus!
August 25th, 2015 at 8:15 pm
Jameis had one throw in the second quarter (second or third play of the quarter) that was beautiful right down the seam and let the receiver catch it in stride. However the best throw vs. adversity was Glennon’s TD toss to Shepard as he had blitzers in his grill. That was big time too. i still can’t believe there are still posters here that want to trade him especially after seeing Winston come up gimpy! Just as manny posters came on here to tell people not to make too much of one preseason game after Winston and the Bucs had a poor showing in Minnesota, the same is true about the game last night. The difference is it felt really Ann good watching the team lay an ass whoopin on another team in front of the hometown fans. Keep up the good work!
August 25th, 2015 at 8:19 pm
Have no fear, the Bucs are back this year!
August 26th, 2015 at 12:36 am
I’m giving myself a plus 1 for Marpet. I knew this dude was the real deal. When you take a guy like that out of a division 2 school in the primo rounds and the experts were saying hw the Pats and Hawks were looking at taking him, there is a reason. The guy is a straight mauler. I was extremely impressed with Donovan Smith. I focused on the O Line and he did a great job. He had shifty feet and I saw great power from him stopping th DE’s cold in their tracks. These guys are what could turn this thing around for us. 10-6? No, sorry guys but I hope to be near 7-9 or 8-8. That would be a great improvement.

I go to the crapper every time I click on one of Joe’s articles because it takes so long to load. It is the slowest site among the dozen or so I visit everyday. Love the site but damn.
