Last night’s Bucs game meant nothing.
The game didn’t count. It was phony football behind a real-football façade.
But what was real is the exploding impact of Jameis Winston.
Joe spent pregame time talking to fans in the parking lot of the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway. It was all Jameis, Jameis, Jameis, “America’s Quarterback.”
Jameis jerseys were everywhere. Joe snapped the photo above of folks waking down Himes Avenue. Jameis hope and Jameis love touch a diverse group.
Optimism is breathing again from Lakeland to Largo. The 21-year-old franchise quarterback prospect has inspired so many.
Collectively, the Bucs played great against the Bengals. They forced all kinds of turnovers, had a safety, ran the ball, performed on special teams and more. But none of it would have mattered much without a solid performance by Jameis.
That’s what this season is about. Just ask the fans.

Simply never even considered wearing a jersey with someone else’s name on it, in fact, wouldn’t wear one with my name unless I was suited up and on the field….guess that’s a result of 10 years in press boxes with no cheering and simply trying to be a detailed observer, but still glad to see a lot of people enthused about Jameis…..Jameis looks excited about it all, so that’s a great thing…..do love the way his voice carries when he’s calling out coverages and plays….nice.
Anyone else notice how Chucky was absolutely going bonkers over Glennon on the broadcast? He’s gotta be the new leader of the MG MOB.

For those of us that watched him the last 3 years at FSU, this comes as no surprise
The kid LOVES the game of football….he LOVES his teammates and he LOVES the city he plays in
It’s infectious and it leads to taking pride in what you do and it leads to wins. I don’t know if Bucs fans truly understand how lucky we are yet to have landed this franchise changing player but it will start to seep in as the weeks go by

I could care less about winning last night. I did, however, see what I wanted to see. And that was a team fired up ready to play football. Not once the past two pre seasons did we look ready like that in August, sure enough it carried intp September.
I saw a team that was not going let the Bungles come into their house and push them around. I like the mentality.
And people are going to nitpick about Lovie and the o line (they cant nitpick the defense right now!) but what ever. An o line with two rookies and Reid friggin Fragel looked better than I thought they would. How about the o line and Doug Martin working as one solid unit. Or giving Glennon just enough time to score. In time, Jameis will adjust to jail breaks. And hopefully stops tripping over his feet!

I was more impressed with the improvements Winston made to his gameplay. He’s obviously been working on his weak areas.
I didn’t see him stare down a target once.
His throwing motion was much improved.
His game was quicker.
He’s still not perfect, but man, he was impressive.
As to Mike Glennon…he is nowhere near as good…but his game is improving under Koetter as well. The stats say he was better, but keep in mind he was playing against backups for most of those (except in the beginning).
Gruden was impressed with his TD pass, but I wasn’t. It was a bit high and very soft, and given the distance and placement, I think he got lucky. A good defense might have picked it off.
Also, most of his passes were not nearly as good as Winstons. His rating might have turned out higher, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Watch the two side by side and you see a clear difference.
HOWEVER…I hope he continues to look good. I want Licht to get his first 2nd round pick in a trade.
AND…I think the Bucs should keep the third guy. If Koetter can improve him as well, we could have a decent 3rd stringer in case Glennon is traded.
And Glennon SHOULD be traded, because his contract runs out this year. We need to get something while we can, because there is no way he resigns when he thinks he can start elsewhere.

Winston tripping over his feet is one of his weak areas. Even showed the issue in his pro day. For the most part though, I think he’s been okay. That was the first time in the last two games I saw him trip.
The ankle injury was not related to his footwork. It was bad pass blocking.

Has anyone noticed how ESPN refuses to acknowledge Jameis’ TD runs? They show his passing stat line only while mentioning his rushing proficiency in passing. They don’t even write it anywhere. If Mariota had 2 rushing TD’s to this point ESPN would be doing a 30-30 about it.

I am surprised of what no one is talking about. Coach Gruden hinted at it several times last night. That the Bucs Sucker Punched the Bengals last night!!!!!!
They came into RJS playing vanilla and man on man on offense and defense. And the Bucs came with a full game plan on offense and defense. We saw just about every wrinkle that Lovie has on defense and The offense I saw crack back blocks guards and tackles pulling,and double teams.
Now having said all that. That is exactly what the Fans, Players and all of Tampa needed to see!! While it was a sucker punch, It was still a punch and something we did not see last year!!!! I have heard rumors that Lovie need to win, and win soon at home from larger powers!!!!
I just hope that the coaches learned something from last night. That when you catch a team off-guard they can be flustered until it is too late. I hope when the regular season comes around that we do not see the Lovie one-size fits all defense week in and week out! That if once in awhile that you can scheme to take advantage of team with something they were not expecting!!!!
Go Bucs! Enjoy the fact that they protected our beloved RJS! Enjoy that we heard the cannons and crowds chanting Defense, Defense, DEFENSE!!!!!

Its been a very long time since the Bucs showed up for a game excited and ready to play! That was refreshing! As for Glennon, he is a great backup and to Gruden’s point, he will probably get his chance to start somewhere. Having said that, it is so different with Jameis on the field. It feels like our offense is potentially dangerous and anything can happen. When Glennon is in, its slow, methodical, and feels like any drive is easily disrupted and soon will be.

Someone needs to write an article on how Evans has been short arming every ball that has come his way. I think he really did learn a thing or two from Moss. Saving it all for the season but if it wasn’t for VJax, Winston would not have looked so good this pre-season. Evans could at least show up for the 3rd pre-season game.

A good night at the RayJay last night. But I was a bit upset at the 4 straight runs right up the gut that set up the safety. I REALLY wanted them to step on the Bungles throat, figuratively speaking. I know all the rationalizations, experience for the kiddies, running out the clock, not embarrassing the Bungles in a meaningless game, and prolly more. Just haven’t ever had that kind’a swagger, on the offense, and I want the team to have it, just once in my lifetime.

Ive watched every FSU game and only remember Winston stumbling in the Nat Champ game. Dont remember him having a issue coming out from under center. Ill just chalk it up to Nerves for now.

Joe …yet there are still haters out there. Buc fans no less. I welcome each and every one of them with open arms. I also welcome as many haters of Winston that aren’t Buc fans to keep hating. Hate as much as you can. Winston knows there are many people out there that simply CAN’T STAND HIM. I believe he feeds off of it. So keep on hating and don’t let up.

@Bonzai….I had to laugh at your comment on the Glennon pass. You do understand that the pass was perfect don’t you? Could not have been completed if it were ANY different. It was a thing of beauty and luck had nothing to do with it. Both QB’s showed great touch last night and I’m happy we have Glennon as a backup if Winston goes down.

LOVED seeing Jamies force the defense to cover every single blade of grass on the field! He was aggressive throwing the ball deep down field with one-on-one coverage and throwing in between defenders. He was conservative throwing to the check down receivers. And he audibles to run plays. Jamies is way better than Mariotta!!!

I like the posters that say wow he’s really improved his mechanics since college. It’s the same people that I argued with before that draft that there was nothing wrong with his mechanics to begin. Yet they saw it, when they watched re-watched FSU games of course and studied it. So they were sure he wouldn’t be any good before the draft.
Hell some of them are still whining about the wind up…

Glennon gets scant appreciation after playing well. Comments like he played OK against subs, trade material, not impressed and so forth. I thought he had a better passing game than can do no wrong Winston had. I know, the Bucs can’t afford a backup QB with so many apparent holes, get rid of him. Winston played well, coming along nicely but he is not immune to injury, MG also. MG was the most experienced QB out there. Not even a mention that MG had a good game Joe? I guess Gruden’s praise of MG was a little more than the anti MGM can handle.

Okay, JW had a good game. He played well and was sharp; balls were on time and in the right spot. I still cant believe Wright didnt catch the pass in the seam; big time throw there. He may not make the team. For those of you who doubted me that practice doesnt count…Wright was dropping them in practice too.
If you do want to compare, QBs in this league throw TDs not run for them. JW wont be able to run the edge every time when the 1s are out there all the time. Last time I checked he has no passing TDs…looking forward to him getting off the schneid in game 3 v CLE.

The fact that you wrote this in PRESEASON is ridiculous or a crying shame!!! I chalk it up to FSU blindfest/lovefest. This is a QB league and most QBs are throwing TDs not running them in. I would like to see some more throwing TDs before casting a vote.

Good game by Jameis last night. Not great – but good. I saw at least a couple throws that not many QBs in this league can make. The 3rd and 16 pass that Tim Wright dropped was a thing of beauty. Winston’s readiness to lead this team as a rookie is coming along nicely. God it feels good to see the team play well and get the big WIN at home – even if it was pre-season.

What’s really funny is after the Titans game, you couldn’t count how many people were criticizing Jameis. There were so many saying we picked the wrong QB, Jameis is a bust, etc. etc. Where are all those people now? What kind of a fan does that make you if you criticize our guy when the other guy does well (and make no mistake, Mariota did play well), yet you are too full of yourself to come back and praise OUR quarterback?
Truth be told, we don’t know who is the better QB, and we won’t for a while. I’ll say that if we lose to the Titans by 30 or if we beat them by 30. Every QB develops at a different rate. However, after September 13, I’m done with Mariota. Our QB is Winston. Mariota is ancient history. I’ll worry about him in 2017 (the next time we play him). If you want to cry about him, then more power to you.

I’m super excited about Winston now. He looks awesome. I just hope he can continue to find that rhythm and throw strikes somewhat consistently this year like he was last night…. I really think we can put it all together and have a winning season this year.
Winston looks elite.
Doug Martin looks spectacular.
We have plenty of weapons and a good scheme on offense.
We have the potential for greatness on D.
I think our Oline will be sufficient in combination with good play calls and adjustments.
I’d definitely say we are setup for success.

Who was the better QB Kelly or Marino. I’m telling you this Mariota-Fameis debate is going to continue for quite awhile. I think Fameis was the right player for our team. They both have talent but our team needed a kick in the ass.
I think Mariota has leadership skills for the right team. Our undisciplined group of losers needed something more and I believe that’s Fameis. Doesn’t mean Mariota can’t also be a great QB. Some people really have difficulty getting over their hurt fee fees. The debate over who we should pick first has obviously left some hard feelings…mostly from the FSU faithful who are hardly objective. Nor would I be objective if I was a Nole diehard. I get it but again…hating on Mariota does not make Fameis one bit better. Fameis can be great regardless of Mariota’s success stop gripping. We got him and it’s all going to work out.
When it’s the Titans versus the Bucs in SB 51 or 52. Then of course we’ll all root against Mariota….but hopefully with a little class.

1987…what he did in college does not count in the NFL. There are 100s college players who were great in NCAA that did squat in the NFL.
NFL is a totally different animal look at RGIII, a great example.

I think I’m the one guy whose man-crush love for Jameis at least rivals yours. However, I really wish you wouldn’t say Mariota is going to be a bust. First of all, from what I’ve seen, he’s going to be just fine. Second and more importantly, it’s really bad luck. This franchise has had enough bad luck and bad QB play – we really don’t need to do anything to create any more. Let’s just keep our mouth shut and be humble, then cheer our arses off for OUR quarterback. We don’t need to worry about Mariota.
