Jameis Film Shows Improved Mechanics

Longtime NFL Films Xs and Os guru Greg Cosell is down on the Bucs because he sees Tampa Bay as a team with a “pocket passer behind a bad O-line.”
But Cosell also offered some upside after the Bucs’ preseason opener in Minnesota.
Cosell spent plenty of time studying Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, before the NFL Draft. And he scrutinized Bucs film from Saturday night. There’s marked improvement, he said.
“I thought he had some issues understanding and recognizing safeties in the middle of the field, which he had that same issue his last year at Florida State,” Cosell said of Jameis on the Ross Tucker Podcast. “I thought, thought that they clearly worked with him; I thought his stride was a little shorter and his delivery a little more compact.”
Cosell also believes he knows what lies ahead on opening day for Tampa Bay from Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and the rest of the defensive minds around the league.
“I think they’re going to be blitzed an awful lot. Really, they’re going to force [Jameis] to play faster,” Cosell said.
Yes, the blitzes are coming. (The Bucs play wild Rob Ryan and the Saints in Week 2.) Turnovers change games and Jameis is prone to them, and likely will be for the early part of his rookie campaign.
Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter is going to earn his money playing chess and making sure his playcalling helps keep Jameis in one piece, especially in September.

I’ve noticed this as well. While I feel its too soon to celebrate, I do think the kid is working his butt off to be good.
If he does bust, it won’t be from lack of effort.
He’s impressive off the field so far. More so than I expected.
On the field, he has the same issues I pointed at before the draft….but he’s slightly improved in them. If he keeps improving, I’ll be happy.

I just hope Jameis’ spirit won’t be broken if he goes through some beatings this season. Part of what makes him so good is his never say die mentality, it’d be a shame to see him lose that.

I’m more concerned about his health. It’s why I felt Mike Glennon should start the first 4 games or so. Give the line time to gel.

Winston has no ‘bust’ in him. He may get busted up and can’t play, but that’s a different matter. Give him a little time. He’ll soon be a nightmare for defensive coordinators. This young man is a star in the making.

Jameis is also “prone to” make spectacular 35 yard passes with touch and on the money to streaking receivers. I’m not a fantasy football person – but having both Jameis and Evans on your FF team will likely provide some good #s on certain weeks.

One thing to keep in mind is that Jameis was insanely good against the blitz his Freshman year of college behind an adequate line his numbers:
70.6% comp, 20 TD, 3 INT, 12 sacks.
The kid will stand in the face of a rush and throw darts if he has any time at all.

I understand the importance of so called NFL mechanics but I can’t help but think of Phillip Rivers and how effective he’s been thru out his professional career. The proof yet another lucrative contract from the Chargers upper echelon. Point I’m trying to make is please don’t coach all of Jamies out of Jamies man.

I intend on picking up Jameis as a backup QB and at least one of the following: Evans/Jackson/ASJ
…but then again, my downfall in fantasy is that I’m a Bucs fan, first. For this reason, I won’t draft (or even pick up in free agency) anyone else that is in the NFC South, and if there is someone on my team that is playing against the Bucs that week, they get sent to the bench…

That’s the main reason I don’t participate in FF celly. I don’t like the unnatural feelings and loyalties it creates regarding the success of players on other teams. Too often the things that you find yourself cheering for in FF is at odds with what’s good for the Bucs

If blitzing was the end all and be all why don’t all teams do it all the time?
Because of course it’s also a gamble. Feast of famine. If the offense is prepared and the OC-QB are on the same page too much blitzing can actually be a weakness.
And so we’ll see if Koetter can take advantage of that. Gotta feel good though.
How many OC’s would love to have the defensive predictably the Bucs are going to face the first half of this season. I say burn em a new one!!! Make them pay for their gambling big time.

Looks like a bust to me. Long, slow release. Stares down receivers, we should have taking Leonard Willams. I’ll be surprised if he makes it as a starter in the NFL. WAY TO GO BUCS, just another disappointment in the making as a draft pick.

How did you get all that from 1/2 a game, a rookie QB, 2 rookie linemen??? It makes more sense if we understand it is actually a personal opinion, and not football acumen. As with all opinions, including “expert” ones, we have to wait for actual games to be played and entire seasons to be evaluated.

Celly – want to come join my fantasy league? I’m as direhard Bucs fan as they come, but FF with money on the line? I’m starting whichever TE we play that I have. Seriously though, I will play guys against the Bucs and still root against them. But in the end the last few years they usually fair well against our defense. God I hope that changes this year, and I would love to be in a position to grab Jaemis just in case. #iBelieve #JustWinstonBaby
