Time For Glennon To Raise His Trade Value

August 14th, 2015

Glennonwide

Mike Glennon has not had a strong training camp. There, Joe put it on the table.

At no time did Glennon play like a guy who should be competing for a starting job.

Sorry, Mike Glennon Mob. Joe doesn’t recall talking to any fans, or local and national media, who seemed to think Glennon was acting or playing like a starter this month.

And while many think Joe is anti-Glennon, that’s inaccurate. In fact, Joe is pulling hard for Glennon to have a strong preseason so the Bucs find an attractive trade market for him.

As Joe has written, Glennon is a luxury the Bucs don’t need. He’s a strong backup quarterback that’s sure to bolt in free agency after the 2016 season. So the Bucs might as well dump him now while his value is high. If there’s a quarterback-desperate team out there that desires Glennon and would cough up a third-round and a fourth-round pick, then Joe thinks the Bucs should pull the trigger instantly.

The best way to make that happen is for Glennon to rise up this preseason and look like a starter. He’ll have familiar targets tomorrow night in Bobby Rainey, Louis Murphy, Luke Stocker and Brandon Myers, in addition to some speedy rookie receivers, like Kenny Bell, who seem to get open often. If Glennon gets a modicum of blocking, then he should be able to shine against second-rate defenders.

Heck, Jimmy Clausen looked like a heck of a quarterback last night. Glennon has the experience and talent to do the same as preseason kicks off tomorrow.

Joe believes Glennon’s future is very much in his hands through the preseason. Being dominant is his only chance to force himself out of a non-competitive situation on the Bucs roster. Joe’s not sure Glennon has it in him, however, he may just be a career backup. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Glennon didn’t act like he was competing for the starting job because he wasn’t….it was already given to Winston.

As far as the trade….I would expect that we would get as much for him at the end of the season as now….and we would have his services as backup this year.

Teams will give up a 3rd or 4th even for a serviceable backup with a year’s rookie contract still in place.

We Trade Mike Glennon to Jets for DE/LB Quinton Coples.

  3. Buctebow Says:

I see a Glennon trade as very unlikely in the short term as well. Why would a team give up a strong back up qb going into the season, unless it was an offer they couldn’t refuse. Winston could get hurt for a game or two, or worse and then what, flush the whole season down the toilet just to get a 4th round pick? I don’t see it.

Every championship team has a capable backup. Keep Glennon and the resign him before he hits free agency. We need stability.

  7. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Anybody remember the name of the QB, that backed up Russell Wilson the past 3 seasons?

Sorry, Mike Glennon Mob. Joe doesn’t recall talking to any fans, or local and national media, who seemed to think Glennon was acting or playing like a starter this month.”

Why would any team give very much for him?
You have asked/wondered, on many occasions why Buccaneer fans love drama. It is because the media (cough-Joes included-cough), like to keep the drama pot filled to the brim. It seems to be the main course.

  10. Bobby Says:

Why would we want to trade a good backup QB? Is QB the only position suddenly that doesn’t require depth??!? That’s just plain stupid. Especially with our O-line. There’s a real chance we’ll need 2 QB’s this year. It’s like saying “If Winston goes down we don’t need anyone behind him that can throw.”

  11. Trubucfan22 Says:

The problem there is that then we have no back up qb. Sure theres the camp arm we currently have on the roster. But do you really think he is helping to guide winston? I firmly believe glennon is better for us than the 7th round pick hes worth. Even if a tram is desperate enough to give us a 4th id still say, no. I wish he never ever plays again for the bucs, but that doesnt mean he doesnt have value holding the clip board.

  12. Brent Says:

If we could get 2nd rd pick I’d do it but not for a 3rd or 4th. He’s cheap and knows the system plus our o-line sucked last year. Need depth. I can’t see jet trading. They got Fitzpatrick and that Baylor kid as backups plus geno back in 6 weeks.

  13. Another J Says:

I would keep Glennon. We may need a capable backup quarterback.

  14. LargoBuc Says:

Sorry but I dont think it would be wise to trade Glennon right now. Jameis is a rookie. And there would be no one to back him up. Seth Lobato is practice squad material. No way should he take up a spot on an NFL roster. We would have to sign a free agent first. One that has experience and can operate the “Air Koetter” offense. Then maybe we could trade him. But then if we downgrade our back up quarterback spot for anything less than a third, that’s just moronic. And with our history, who to say we wouldnt draft a bust with that pick anyway.
Why mess up one of the few posistions that we actually have depth at?

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Of course nobody is talking about Glennon cuz everyone knows Winston was gifted the job. But from reading your training camp observations it sounds to me like he did just as good a job as Winston did with less Ints.

And of course The Joe’s arent anti-Glennon, they’ve only disrespected him every chance they get. Begged for a trade relentlessly since we drafted him. Declared that he had 0 chance to do anything in Tampa before he took his first snap. Sounds like they are in love with the guy to me.

  16. @Broy3434 Says:

Man some of you are clueless. Joe it sure is funny reading posts from people who LITERALLY quote “hey I’ll give you a 3rd round pick for the guy backing up your first overall QB that’s in his final year of a contract you were forced to absorb and deemed wasn’t good enough to start” um no thanks I’m going to hang on to Glennon because we don’t have three pro bowlers on our offensive line. Sorry!

  17. @Broy3434 Says:

Like seriously you armchair GM’s; if there EVER was a trade to make its trading a backup with one year left on his deal backing up the newly acquired franchise face its this one. Please I dare you to come up with a more obvious trade scenario. And are you really gonna try and say we can’t just go sign some bum of the streets that is perfectly adequate. My god just get Keenum or Tebow. One of them id be willing to bet is available.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

Why hasn’t anyone who speaks to Koetter or Lovie or Licht asked the status of Glennon or their impression of his play during training camp and going forward. No teammates comments? Aside from the camp recaps MG has seemed a non entity. You say he hasn’t had a strong training camp, I’d like to know what the coaches think of his future. Maybe they are just waiting for the call to dump him. All in on Winston, rather Super Winston who doesn’t need a backup.

  19. Warren Says:

A solid backup QB is a “luxury”? News to me..

  20. Señor Mofo Says:

How is Glennon a “luxury” we don’t need? He’s a solid backup with demonstrable starting experience, is dirt cheap, and won’t hit free agency for two more seasons.

Seems to me like he’s exactly the kind of bargain-priced luxury we DO need.

The Cardinals were 9-1 last season, lost Carson Palmer, then went 2-4 over their final six. Sure, they still got a wild card because they had already won nine games before Palmer’s injury, but they lost their first playoff game.

If they had a capable backup for Palmer, they might have won their division, and/or one or more playoff games.

They probably wouldn’t have minded such a luxury.

If we get good value for Glennon, great. But the idea that we should move him for virtually any offer “just because” is ridiculous.

  21. Señor Mofo Says:

    @Broy3434 Says:

Like seriously you armchair GM’s; if there EVER was a trade to make its trading a backup with one year left on his deal . . .

    —————————————————————————————

Let me get this straight: you’re deriding other posters for being “armchair GMs” and yet you seem to think this is the final year of Glennon’s contract.

  22. DooshLaRue Says:

    Joe knows quarterbacks.

  23. rayjay1122 Says:

Glennon will be retained for the 2015 season. Probably not after that though. Some can argue that trading him makes sense and some can argue that it makes no sense but at the end of the day, I just do not see the Bucs cutting ties with Glennon this season. I do not really have an opinion either way, I just do not think the Bucs are looking to move him this year.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Obviously very few of your readers agree with you on this Joe. A solid backup QB who only costs the team $800k this year and still has another year left on his rookie contract after this one is not a “luxury”. Especially when your starting QB is a rookie (regardless of how talented). Are saying Seth Lobato is ready for prime time if Jameis goes down for the season in week 2? There are no other decent back-up QBs available to bring in at this point – and even if they did bring in a Jason Campbell or whoever – the new QB would be on too steep of a learning curve to try and get the new offense down in time to be able to come in and be effective if needed.

Trading Glennon this year for a 4th or even a 3rd round pick makes no sense. And if you think a team is going to give up a 3rd AND a 4th for him – you are dreaming.

  25. Vic Says:

Can’t believe there are so many clowns out there. Joe wrote here that the Bucs should jump if a team is willing to part with a 3rd AND a 4th round pick. That seems damn good to me for a guy who isn’t going to help this team win a Super Bowl.

If Glennon lights it up this preseason and somebody comes with a third-rounder, then you better believe they should deal. No backup is going to help this team get to the playoffs this year, so load up on picks. In case you haven’t noticed, the Bucs have only drafted one defensive player in two years. You have to make up for that at some point.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

Nobody is going to offer a 3rd or 4th round pick cuz Glennon lit up 2nd and 3rd stringers. If you were wanting to trade him you put him in with the 1s. Thats not happening cuz as we all know, Lovie gifted Winston that job and will be getting all those reps. Face it, Glennon is staying here for at least another year.

  27. JameisBucsfan Says:

Jameis will not get hurt and go down for the year. If we can get an extra pick we need to get it. The same people who want to keep Glennon are the same people who think that we are going to be 6-10 at best this year. We will suck without Jameis, with or without Glennon.

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lol @ buc fan since 76’s comment. That is the most inaccurate statement I have ever seen on this site.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Anybody else watching Mariota tonight to see what he does? Lol, I’m gonna fall off my chair laughin if he throws a pick or multiple picks after all that crap about not throwing any in camp.

  30. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Couch Fan

You better believe I’m going to be watching Mariota tonight. If he plays lights out though it won’t mean squat relative to Fameis. They are two different players and I can’t help but suspect that both players will have good NFL careers.

But Fameis is the Buc and so he’s my guy now. I’ll be interested tonight with Mariota and tomorrow night with Fameis how much off the offense they are allowed to run. How much will their OC’s protect them and spoon feed them, or will they turn them loose?

  31. Couch Fan Says:

Same here. I do think that they wont coddle Jameis though like most think. They put him under fire immediately once training camp started, I expect them not to hold back once the games start to. Will be fun comparing the two until opening weekend.

  32. bucntarv Says:

Tomorrow night can’t come soon enough.

  33. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Y’all hold it down, time to go see”Straight outta Compton”..

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Simply be patient…..someone will need Glennon…..either this year or next and when they do….we’ll get at least a 3rd rd pick for him. He has value….either as a backup or as a potential starter…..be patient…the opportunity will come.

  35. Imnotsoldyet Says:

Maybe Glennon is not going all out in camp cause he knows he hasn’t got a cold chance in hell to be the starter. When you know that the deal most players wouldn’t probably go above and beyond to out due the starter. If Glennon was honest and was asked he probably would like to be traded. But Glennon is a standup guy and keeps his mouth shut.

  36. JabooBuc Says:

Wow! Pretty good idea why Mariota hasn’t thrown a pic in practice. Just watched Matt Ryan carve up their defense like a hot knife through butter.

  37. Couch Fan Says:

LMAO I knew it. Pick already on 1st drive.

  38. rayjay1122 Says:

    Interception…LOL MARIOTA!!!!

  39. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Yeah Couch Fan. And so while we read on JBF yesterday how Fameis has marvelled at just how talented NFL linebackers are compared to college. In fact Fameis has been picked repeatedly as he LEARNS this difficult lesson.

Meanwhile Mariota wasn’t picked at all during practice and totally lost sight of that LB and tossed what could have been a pick six!

  40. Trubucfan22 Says:

No one is going to offer up a third and fourth round pick for glennon. Thats crazy talk. Glennon hasnt shown any indication he is worth that. Have you guys not seen what back up players are being traded for? Heck even really good starters are going for no more than 4th round picks, and back ups are more like 6th or 7th. Mallet was traded for a 7th if i remember right. And mallet has more potential than glennon.

  41. Lord Cornelius Says:

Lol interception in first 3 attempts for Mariota.

  42. JabooBuc Says:

    Welcome to the NFL Marcus!

  43. The Buc Realist Says:

While I am chuckling, Lets not laugh too hard until we see our guy tomorrow night. But an INT on dump pass is pretty funny!!!!

  44. StPeteBucsFan Says:

There are ints that are simply bad throws…tosses that get away can happen to anybody. There are ints when a defender simply makes an incredible play.

And then there are the kind that concern fans of teams with rookie QB’s. Ints that occur because the QB is not yet seeing the field and placing the defenders.
That’s exactly what happened to Mariota. That was a horrible rookie mistake.

  45. Trubucfan22 Says:

    @imnotsoldyet

If glennon was caught not giving it his all, then that is why he isnt a starting qb. How is a back up supposed to sharpen skills and prove his worth if he isnt even trying?

  46. Couch Fan Says:

    Wow…

  47. The Buc Realist Says:

Reminds me of when the Bucs played Atlanta last year. The Falcons are just dancing all over them. I hope the Titans save some of that “stink” for the opening game!!!

  48. Dave Pear Says:

    We picked the right QB.

  49. Walter Says:

    Woooooooh!!!!! Go Mariota!!!! XD

All of a sudden he’s a turnover machine

  50. Trubucfan22 Says:

I guess even the golden Hawaiian makes mistakes

  51. Aristotle Says:

Mariota not looking so Hot, hope Jameis does better!

  52. The Buc Realist Says:

On the bright side, Titans are dominating the Time of Possession!!!!

  53. JabooBuc Says:

    Hey, where’s SuperSam?

  54. Walter Says:

Now that the 2’s are in for Atlanta, now he moves the ball. He still has his starters in too.

  55. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I still see the Falcons as the biggest hurdle to winning our division. Quinn will have them playing hard and they have talent.

  56. LakelandBuccan Says:

The Atlanta Falcons won’t win 7 games this season. This is preseason, it don’t mean nothing.

  57. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I think Atlanta goes 10-6 this season.

  58. Ray Rice Says:

He is who we thought he was! #SCRUB

  59. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The whole point of the Joe’s belief that we don’t need a top backup QB like Glennon is that the Joe’s think we are only winning 6 games this season. If we are a 6-10 team with Winston, what is the point to have a good backup. Missing the playoffs at 6-10 or 2-14 is still missing the playoffs. If the Joe’s thought the Bucs were a Supebowl contender, they would be all for keeping Glennon. Ask them. I bet I’m right on this one, believe it or not! Lol

  60. Buc1987 Says:

Mariota’s stats 7-of-8 throws for 94 yards, with the one interception and one sack.

    Pretty nice.

  61. Buc1987 Says:

    BuccaneEric75…you’re right btw.

  62. Dan Says:

LOL, LETS SEE HOW JAMEIS PLAYS TOMORROW FOR YOU LOSERS GO CALLING THIS LOSER THEN MASIA.. IN THE MEANTIME MARIOTA WENT 7 FOR 8 FOR 90 YARDS AND 1 TD PASS…. LOL WINSTON IS GOING TO BE A BUST AND FLIPPING BURGERS IN 3 YEARS LOL… THIS GUY SUCKS……..

  63. Buc1987 Says:

    ^^^This guy Dan sucks

  64. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Dan, Mariota had an INT, not a TD. Get your facts straight.

  65. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Dan, what does THEN MASIA mean?

  66. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    87, your right too! Lol!

  67. JameisBucsfan Says:

Dan, you are insane if you think that the 5-5 against people who won’t be in the NFL in 2 weeks is impressive.

  68. Buc1987 Says:

    All in caps loser troll.

  69. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    87

    That’s because Dan has ISSUES!

  70. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, maybe Dan should go in the clingers club?!

  71. Danr Says:

that is why i had to change my name on here.

Re: Mariota. It’s funny. Not for him but for the Mariota Clingers (thanks 87). Rookies are gonna rook.

  74. Buccfan37 Says:

Has Mariota completed any long passes or ran for any yards yet, aka the double threat.

  75. Danr Says:

couple were more than 15 yards. Or at least one was….using recolection

  76. Buc1987 Says:

Welp keep track of them stats for us Dano…

  77. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Is Danr also ALL CAPS DAN?

  78. DB55 Says:

    Love and Warwick

Camelot music, lmao. Sam goody got it! Lol

  79. DB55 Says:

Hey! Mariota accounted for 10 of altlanta points. That’s great production for a rookie on his first time out.

So far the best qb play I’ve seen is from Cousins (Redskins) he was like 10/10 at one point just owning the defense.

  80. BucFan20 Says:

If this team gets to 7&5 and Jameis goes down I think Glennon has had us in the lead and shown enough I want him back there. This is the NFC South. You can go from worst to first. And you don,t always have to be 11&5 to be first.

  81. LakelandBuccan Says:

We will be lucky if we get a 5th round pick for Mike Glennon, he never plays good in preseason games. Greg Schiano drafted him to be his starting QB, but he couldn’t win the job from Josh Freeman. So Schiano sabotage Josh with poor play calling and use him as a scapegoat for our losses to the Jets and Saints. The whole team played bad against the Patriots, but Schiano used the loss to bench Josh. The reason why they haven’t traded Glennon, is because teams are not offering them anything for him. If teams have offer them a 3rd round pick for Glennon, he would’ve been gone.

  82. Yungry Says:

You trade Glennon in the final year of his contract. He has 2 more seasons. MG>Jason Campell no depth=destruction

  83. Lakeland Buc Says:

I’m going to focus more on Seth Lobato, I seen him play against the Falcons last preseason. I believe he has a chance to be our backup QB, he’s 6’6 230 lbs with a decent arm. But the Bucs will showcase Glennon, and if he play bad this preseason. We would probably end up trading him for a 7th round pick.

  84. Jbeachbuc Says:

Hey ignoramus Jody/Dan , two turnovers for Marcus, that as stated above directly led to 10 points for Atlanta.

    IDIOTS!!!

  85. drdneast Says:

BTW, despite my post, I do believe the Bucs should keep Glennon who is under contract thru ’16 unless they are offered a No. 2 pick.

  86. Dan Says:

Danr IS NOT all caps dan. I used to be ‘Dan’ been posting here since 2011, this guy shows up, and i had to change to ‘danr’ to separate myself from those….opinions.

  87. Danr Says:

crap, then i post on a different device and it still had dan saved. haha embarassing. Ive posted here with two email accounts and Joe/admin can confirm that Danr, is not that guy.

i used to be ‘Dan’ though. and on this computer i was saved as ‘Dan’

  88. Danr Says:

danr was pro marriota until the draft and is now all in with jameis. ALL-CAPS-DAN is a titans fan. from what i can tell

  89. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

Will see who is better after five years or who is still in the NFL or who’s backing who !!!!!!! lol GO MARIOTA !!!!!!!

  90. Skyline Crew Says:

Titan’s O-Line looked like the Bucs 2014. Let’s hope they bring that opening day. They couldn’t block anything.

  91. BucsFan85 Says:

Where is BUC-A-NEW? Haven’t seen a post from him in forever?

  92. BuccaneEric75 Says:

85, he’s been banned for a while and I think the Joe’s finally caught up to him.😢

  93. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Skyline, that’s what I’m hoping for!!!

  94. The original "Kevin" Says:

Woe Mariota looked like a pu$$iey!!!

I dont like that. Im glad we got a qb who plays with a pair!

  95. scotty Says:

    A 4th round pick is to low!!2nd or a 3rd period!

  96. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

“So Schiano sabotage Josh with poor play calling and use him as a scapegoat for our losses to the Jets and Saints.”

C’mon Lakelanbuccan…even if you don’t like Schiano you’re implying that Schiano was trying to torpedo his own career just to take down Freeman/start Glennon. That’s crazy talk…Schiano saw the warning signs in 2012 that Freeman had something going on off the field and drafted Glennon/gave him some reps despite publicly supporting Josh and naming him the starter. For the umpteenth time…Josh ruined Josh…the Vikings, Giants, and most likely the Dolphins all agree. As for Glennon, I like the guy on the Bucs and see no real upside to trading him this year. I’m a tad confused that after several positive reviews of Glennon during camp by the Joe’s that they proceed to pen an article saying Glennon hasn’t done anything in camp so far. It’s OK though…I’m predicting like some other decent players Lovie thought he could do better on (Penn, Zuttah, Revis, etc) you’ll miss Glennon after he’s gone.

  97. Señor Mofo Says:

Hey, that could be a country song:

    Jamies was gonna deliver
’til he took a hard shot to the liver
And Bucs fans stand and wonder what went wrong
Now they all miss Glennon ’cause he’s gone

  98. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Not too shabby Mofo 🙂 Nashville is always looking for song writers
