Bucs Move Practice To Tropicana Field

Update: 6:08 p.m.: It seems the Bucs are playing April Fools’ Day jokes on Joe. After Joe arrives in St. Pete, the Bucs decide improving weather will keep practice in Tampa.
Afternoon downpours and thunderstorms rolled into One Buc Palace just in time to screw up training camp practice today.
After a brief delay, Tampa Bay got in its stretching and some very light work before the skies opened and the lightning alarm sounded.
In line with NFL rules, the Bucs use fancy lightning-detection equipment, the same kind that cleared the fields earlier this week.
But the Bucs won’t be held back, not with a game on Saturday night, the first real look at America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. The Bucs will practice tonight at Tropicana Field. Like today’s practice, the FruitDome event is closed to the public. The Tampa Bay Rays just left town for a 10-game road trip.
The Bucs travel to Minnesota tomorrow, where they’ll be greeted by 90 degree temperatures.

Just like most of the NFL rules created the last few years, the lightning precautions (during games) are a joke. I’m sure most FL residents can attest, we know when to seek shelter. There is no need to delay a game over an hour after a cloud to cloud strike so far away the thunder is barely audible.

The liability the team would face if someone got struck by lightning is no joke. Always better to err on the side of caution with things like lightning. It can travel miles and has been known to strike even when the sun is shining and the storm is miles away. I don’t have a problem with rules that protect people. Believe me, if they continued practice and a fan or player got hit by lightning everybody would be screaming about how careless they were etc.

Lightning can strike indoors also. I’ve heard of people being struck a good distance away from the actual thunderstorm. I use the one thousand one count after seeing the bolt to determine the distance away from my position. A strike and immediate thunder is the scariest.

Yeah, I don’t play around with lightning, so I’m all for them delaying whatever they have to. Perhaps having my house struck by lightning and burning to the ground as a kid might have influenced my feelings.

Im just glad we dont need that indoor facility!!
Where would we be, if the Rays had been using their stadium ?
Im glad the Glazers are addressing this obvious and important need.
Hopefully, it is complete with Fan seating and a Great AC system.

Joe, you mentioned last year and how the Bucs didn’t miss but one practice I think? It was your point against an indoor facility.
Well, I’m just curious…how many practices were in the Trop?

Yep it’s hot up here right now. Not as humid as I remember from growing up in Florida though.

Getting used to playing on turf would be useful.
